I would have never guessed the parts of that song were THAT simple with how big it sounded… that’s amazing. Also, these explanations + white board illustrations are pure gold!! Sooo helpful
8 seconds in and i know you are helpful, because you actually show how production leads to better mixes. If the production is bad, the mix will be bad. For me mixing is making sure that the sound selection and sound design are good and leveling everything up, add fx, and high and low cut on the equalizers. Quality content! Remember i just 8 seconds in. You have got a great hook. I can see the confidence. Keep it up!
SOUND SELECTION is a really an underated skill, which in most cases is the crucial element to producing better mixes. I too am still struggling with this but there is room for improvement.

Im so confused cause i watched countless tutorial on mixing, after your video spot watch mixing i kinda dont know what to exactly, how to aproach leveling, mastering and all that stuff btw great videos
this concept action goes back to the baroque era. if they wanted a melody to stand out they would double it with another instrument an octave higher. if there was counterpoint they would exist in their own frequency ranges. if one pitch went higher and it needed to stand out everything would go in the opposite direction. they'd even do things like put instruments that sit in the same frequency range on opposite sides of the stage. so basically like panning. nice video nathan! very informative.
I've learned over the years that less is more. Using less instruments but making them sound big to fill that space. Tempo is also a factor considering how much space there is between notes. Fast tempo can turn into a quick mess.

I've been mixing live for a church for a while now and I'd say the best thing you can do is EQing in creative ways. things like drums tend to carry through lower frequency sounds acoustically so in your mix make sure they're nice and snappy. compression and eq boosts. make sure the bass is moderately tucked away from the high end and away from the vocals. the vocals should be left alone the most. but for live mixing think of it like making puzzle pieces with the eq so everything sits in it's place. but also leaving instruments room to breathe.
Question - Firstly, thanks Nathan for your post, always so professional and clear. So my question is; could you do a video on how to change the effects on one track. So let's say a guitar starts with one effect, which slowly changes into another. Or say an echo on a voice that gets quicker and changes from clear to fuzz.

I don’t know the technical terms for this but in vocals I hear incompatible frequencies that hurt my ears. It’s almost like another frequency is being created on the high end and I have tried to change the frequencies to more mid range but I can still hear it. I have extremely sensitive ears so I don’t know if it’s a me thing but if you maybe understand what I am saying, how can this be corrected? It doesn’t go away with reducing gain. In my ears it’s so high it’s like hearing a dog whistle.
