Luke's table setting was mesmerising! I hope you pass on the table setting skills, knowledge and etiquette to your children so the craft is not lost. What a lovely table for your Thanksgiving dinner.
Dear Luke-- the reason for the marshmallows plus the browned sugar is to make the “CANDIED” part of the candied sweet potatoes. If you are making simple baked sweet potatoes you can leave off the marshmallows. I must say Luke, you are so cute in so many ways.
Oh yuck. I absolutely despise candied sweet potatoes any time. In our household, we do natural sweet potatoes and you can add whatever you’d like. I like to pile veggies onto mine, like Brussel sprouts or greens. We do salads at Thanksgiving, and emphasize the fresh veggies so we don’t all feel unhealthy after eating the feast. 🥗
No courses, Luke. Food either placed on the table, a sideboard, or kitchen counter--everyone either passes the dishes or stands in line. The turkey may or may not be placed on the table carved...lots of variety in presentation. It can be lots of fun. Yes to marshmallows, too. Happy eating, and Happy Thanksgiving!🦃🇺🇸🇬🇧
I was around before the green bean casserole was ever a thing, at least not in Northern California, I can remember in around 1970, my mom and I were looking at the recipe on a can of Campbell's' Cream of Mushroom soup, and we both thought we'd like to try it for Thanksgiving. The next year rolled around, and we wanted it again. We told friends about it, and brought it to a couple of Thanksgiving dinners we were invited to, it was just the two of us, and we sometimes received kind invitations from friends, and it was always popular. About fifteen or twenty years later or so, it was everywhere. It had become a Thanksgiving staple I have often made it without the can of soup, making the sauce from scratch but I wouldn't say it's a monumental difference. The original recipe called for canned beans, which I don't do. I'm not the kind of cook who measures stuff, and I tweek; I add garlic and whatever else I want, and it's always good.
Happy Thanksgiving! Ive noticed, when setting the table you put your knife on the outside, we put it right of the plate, blade in and then spoon. My family always have praline yams, butter, brown sugar and pecans. Love the center piece and candles.
My sweet potato casserole's topping is 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup flour, 2 and 1/2 tablespoons melted butter, and 1/2 cup chopped pecans (in that order). So good!
Luke, you're funny! Re: the chipboard leaf, you said " Don't tell anyone." You just told 150 thousand people! Love you guys. Ever since I found your channel I've been binge watching starting with a year ago, and it's so much fun!
Julie, it is wonderful that you brought the tradition of Thanksgiving to your family. It is a major holiday for us Americans so your children really should know that side of you. It is so sweet that Luke wants to include some of his recipes to the mix. Yes, Luke. There are no courses. Everybody always has a house full of people, so unless you have a hired staff, courses are not possible. Usually all the food is put out as a buffet and everyone serves themselves and then takes their seat. For this, the turkey would be presented carved. If fewer people, the head of the table will carve the bird and all of the other food is placed on the table to be passed. And many people put marshmallows on their sweet potatoes. The other topping is very much like a strudel topping with pecans, our preferred way. You and Julie are too cute together. I so enjoy watching you! As a matter of fact, ya’ll are what I will be watching Thanksgiving afternoon with several others while the rest are glued to football games or napping. Happy, Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Many blessings to you all!
I'm an average American in Scotland and I celebrate on Saturday. We have all the usual and a big dinner with our friends and for the first time our daughter. Your videos give me a bit of joy every week. Thank you so much
I am Canadian and we do not get the marshmallows on yams thing. One odd throwback to the 70s we still have in our family is a jello mold...lemon jello with pineapple and shredded carrots. Because our Thanksgiving is at harvest time (October), we often have squash rather than yams. We'd also give our napkins one additional fold.
We have stuffed turkey , bread herb dressing , mashed potatoes, gravey , carrots/turnup (rutabaga mashed together)😊 )Brussels sprouts , sweet potatoes no marshmallow but done in a butter brown sugar sauce ,pickles beet, B&b , dills , cranberry sauce , And whipped cream pie , lots of wine and ice wine following dinner Beans are not a Canadian thing, more USA,🎉 each person has to stand up kids included and say their name and what they have been especially thankful for this year…..we also have fancy white lace table cloths and cloth napkins 7:41
Table mats are for informal breakfasts (family only). Table cloths are for formal dinners (dinners with guests). Place plastic sheets beneath the table cloth to protect the table, if you guests are sloppy.
I love the way you tease each one with your banter. You should be stand up comedians. While growing up would have Roast Turkey and Ham and Roast Beef for the main course. There would be up to twenty people at two tables. One would be for the adults and one would be set up for the children.
Sorry Luke - no courses at an American Thanksgiving! We set everything out on the table for everyone to enjoy. We had a wonderful day with family and hope that you enjoyed your 'American' Thanksgiving with your family.
Happy Thanksgiving from the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina💖🙏💖 So much we could gripe about but sooooo much more to be thankful and so grateful for!!
My daughter made Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, candied sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, Watergate salad - there are no greens in this, rolls, and macaroni and cheese- a southern thing here in the states. I made pecan and pumpkin pies. I came home with some leftovers. Yummy the next day. The traditional Thanksgiving dinner is pretty much the same here. Hope you enjoyed your meal. Your centerpiece and table settings look beautiful. Love listening to your banter. So cute and funny. Much love from Hiram, GA🇺🇸
We have made the homemade cream of mushroom soup for the green bean casserole and it was not as good as the canned. We southerners like to alternate the mini marshmallows and chopped pecans in bands on the sweet potato casserole. We put out everything on the table. No courses at Thanksgiving ❤
Lol, being an American married to an Englishman you guys Crack me up. I actually lived in Illinois too. Love the English phrases Julie has picked up. Happy Thanksgiving! Brooklyn NY
Always make my own cranberry sauce from scratch. I make all my food from scratch . The sweet potatoes is an absolute must . It my kid’s favorite. I’m a Yankee, so I never heard of it until I married my southern husband. Is mom taught me . But it is absolutely great !
@@donnabaardsen5372 Guess I shouldn’t cook turkey , do dishes and do voice to text on my phone while watching the video 😂😂😂😂 I corrected it , but that was a good laugh. 👍
Happy day after Thanksgiving from the PNW in Washington, USA I've been binge watching your channel all week! 100s at least! I do watch both channels so I'm sure there's a few I have missed. It's been so much more fun & interesting than most of the drivel & even the history I love on your side of the pond. Very real people & history, it's a winner deal to view!
Happy Thanksgiving Julie and Luke. Have a wonderful day as a family. Can’t wait to see your pictures of the Christmas Market and your home decorations. Hello from Alabama! Julie southern families use both marshmallows and chopped pecans.
Just the two of us and I don’t cook. But I’m watching and sewing. We go out to eat Friday afternoon. Tomorrow will be Mexican food. Happy thanksgiving ❤️
That table is beautiful and you want to take excellent care of it. Please get table pads for each leaf, put that under the tablecloth. Placemats are so informal, fine for the kitchen, or informal family meals. A table looks so much more festive with tablecloths, and the pads protect the wood from spills, scratches, etc.
Happy Thanksgiving from Austria!! Unfortunately, no celebrations for me as I am traveling on a train tonight. To all at Mapperton and around the Globe who are celebrating: Enjoy great food and company!! 😊
Love the cottage that Julie recently restored! Esp. Love the sage green inside the cottage. It seems to be a popular color in the UK! I can’t wait to paint my new entrance door that color for my house in Southern California. Btw, Dorset is my favorite county in the Uk! Can’t wait to visit! Love everything about the UK! You two crack me up! Always fun to see what you are up to! Thanks for the upload!👍😊❤️
Marshmallows on top of sweet potatoes, of course. And for Thanksgiving and Christmas we have baked apples with brown sugar topping and marshmallows too.
Mats for center piece. And candles ... (Hot cider and cranberry juice .. Cinnamon sticks whole cloves .warm up on the stove low then serve up in small coffee cups ) Any time of the day
Julie, you should look into floral sticks that they use on arrangements for those things the stems are not particularly strong or long enough for the arrangement. They generally are 1 centimeter square wooden sticks colored green with near the top some fine wire so that you can reinforce weak stems or better place smaller decorative floral items like a couple holly leaves and berries or some very small pine cones or other seed pods. In huge foral arrangements you can stick ranges or pomegranate's onto the sticks to better attach them to the arrangements. For those people that use fine crystal at these times and they have existing chips or get a chip, tell your guests not to cling the glasses to avoid the damage and you can grind down the chip with some 300 grit sandpaper placed on a flat surface that you hold it by the stem and swirl it on the sand paper until you get to the pint the chip no longer shows. Do not put pressure on the glass otherwise it might burst. Practice will cheap glasswear first to get in the rhythm. In the long run it saves on having to buy new sets of drinking glasses. If the glass is cracked do not bother trying to save it. They say your candles will last longer if you freeze them first before lighting. And if you want to introduce a pleasant odor into the room put a drop of essential oil into the top for it to get to the flame. Some festive ones are Bayberry, grapefruit, sage or rosemary. Not too much otherwise it smells like you are walking into a department store. The tapestry will stand out once it is restored and cleaned.
Happy Thanksgiving from Virginia. My daughter in law set a beautiful table with wooden woven round individual placemats. No marshmallows on sweet potatoes. Stuffing in the bird which was wrapped in butter soaked cheese cloth while roasting. Crystal glass wear and brown and white dishes with a turkey in the center! I could go on but you get picture. Great food and presentation. Four pies too.
I substitute cream of celery soup in green Bean casserole cause we have some non mushroom eaters. Thanks for being here , it’s now August of 24 and u cheered me up!
I’m an American, born and raised in Texas. Moved to Virginia a year or so ago. I can tell you that my family’s traditional Thanksgiving meal, is definitely different than those of the Virginian families I know. Certainly, depending on where in the states you are from, there are local differences, but all will have Turkey, dressing, potatoes, gravy and a green vegetable. How the Turkey is prepared may vary, as will the dressing/stuffing. Most will offer sweet potatoes, and white potatoes. I serve two salads; a broccoli salad, and a fruit salad. I prefer fresh green beans, but I will make a green bean casserole for those who expect it; personally I do not like it. Deviled eggs are a must, as is stuffed celery, and of course, cranberry sauce. Yeast rolls, are always the bread choice. Dessert is pumpkin pie, apple pie, cherry pie, and pecan pie…all offered with real whipped cream. The first Thanksgiving meal I was I cited to in Virginia had dishes I had never had, and didn’t have some I thought were staples across the nation. 🤷🏼♀️ I was especially disappointing that the dressing was made with plain bread; I am used to corn bread dressing, and in fact, do not like bread dressing. USA is a big country, and certain areas/states are influenced by the settlers Ancestry. Certainly that is the reason why one’s traditional meal may vary a bit from another’s, but certainly they are more similar than different. Hope you all had a great family gathering and may this season be filled with many wonderful memory making moments!
Happy Thanksgiving Luke and Julie. I love the way the two of you interact.
Julie is correct! One uses marshmallows in the sweet potatoes.
