This song was originally a formal Buddhist prayer written entirely by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama in the Autumn of 1960, a year and a half after he was forced into exile in India. The text centers around the power of truth and the ideal of karma, specifically that the righteous and the innocent will always prevail in the end. It also centers around the power of compassion, especially compassion for both the oppressed as well as the oppressor. As the prayer made its rounds across the Tibetan public, it gained the musical notes, tones, and pacing from average Tibetan devotees. Ever since, it's easily been one of the most beloved and most common of all prayers recited by Tibetan Buddhists. Every March 10th, the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising is observed by Tibetans everywhere, and this song is a core part of that observance.
