So I played this game for the first time for a few hours today, set out on our journey with a friend to an island. We got out first chest, I spent most of my time the time front of the ship playing some instruments and enjoying the scenery, we noticed one of those light beams and thought we would sail towards it. Part way there the environment got very dark and it worried us so we turned to go back the other way. That's when the megalodon turned up, it chomped us a few times but left us alone after a while, then a ship rose up out the water next to us, we panicked and tried to sail away back to the outpost but it wouldn't leave us alone, I ended up boarding the ship trying to buy my friend time to run away but it kept chasing. We turned to face it and after an intense fight we managed to sink the ship, LESS THAN 30 SECONDS LATER the ocean got very dark and tentacles rose from the deep. My friend got picked out the boat while I was trying to repair. Again there was a long and intense fight but we managed to fight off the kraken and survived the encounter. It was a lot to process on our first voyage.

so what you are telling me, not only did all of those happen at the same time, you also managed to beat them

Nope, I've lured some players to literally the edge of the map off the shores of gold then logged out as my empty ship went past the end. Some idiots just like to chase for nothing.
It's not sea of "Thieves" it's sea of trolls.
The white flag is good for that, if you want to be alone but if provoked you'll fight back, the checkered one.
Black flag means don’t mess with me I won’t mess with you

yeah, I feel like those are pretty important things to mention in a beginner's tutorial guide
i really needed this because i tried playing for the first time with my friend and he kept yelling at me and making fun of me for being bad even tho he was bad at one point 💀
Few tips for Xbox beginners here:
1: PVP only when your ships empty of loot
2: Check the horizon a full 360 every 5 minutes.
3: If you play solo or duo coop you'll get the Sloop
4: If anyone is trying to chase you down sail AGAINST the wind, with your sails facing forward, and full spread.
5: Find a different outpost to deliver to, away from your first one.
6: If you can't shake them sail directly into the nearest edge of the map, the sea will turn red, and destroy your ship. No loot for them.
7: Drop often, and use emissary flags.
8: In PVP you will lose vs. PC. Ignore every weapon but blunderbombs. Spam blunderbombs on their ship, grab firebombs from their barrels, drop their anchor, and camp from their canopy. If you have gunpowder, keep it by the wheel, and drop it off the back when they're behind you.
9: Most people are terrible on this game, and couldn't care less if you quit because you're tired of losing hauls. If you can learn to fight, great. Good luck. If you don't want to wait 500 hours until you can solo camp a Galleon crew like you're Mixel/Blurbs you need to learn how to run better. Like I said, fight when you have nothing to lose. It's good practice.

James Domorod id say yes, fishing, arena and quality of life additions like the meg spawns (except for lies) are wonderful.

The chicken thing is because that chicken is worth more than a thousand gold pieces alive and captured then cooked and sold to the Hunters.

Just in case anyone is curious, I just like to share knowledge where I can.
Listed below are all the Nautical terms that apply to Sea of Thieves still:
front = Bow (pointy thing is bowsprint)
"left" (facing bow) = Port
"right" (facing bow) = Starboard
rear = Stern
front mast = Fore mast
mid mast = Middle mast
rear mast = Mizzen mast
Always call out compass directions because not everyone is facing the same direction as you
into the wind = No go
with the wind = Dead run
straight across the ship = Beam reach
across the ship from bow to stern = Close reach
across the shop from stern to bow = Broad reach (the fastest wind in game & irl)
These terms help a lot when you can rely on everyone to use them properly, there is a good reason they exist in the first place. Trust me, try it and you will notice a significant difference in not just your appreciation for the game but also skill.

Thanks for the help! It stopped me from sinking my own sloop for the first 5 hours of play... unfortunately at that point the kraken got me just before an outpost with 3 chests.

I have played for years, just find myself coming back to vids like this after months of not playing just to refresh.
Falcore needs to form a hunting party for that damn Shrouded Lies. Just spend a day going around killing every Meg they see, get supplies whenever possible, and staying away from islands to increase spawns.

I’m a bit late (I know) NEVER TRUST ALLIANCE MEMBERS FROM OTHER BOATS once me and my friend completed a fort we were using their brig at the end they left the alliance and sold our entire loot pile

Protip: an emote that turns you into a barrel exists and could be earned during season 2. Check for out of place barrels on your ship. Stab'em.

Was just amazed by the environment and the views, ended up dying so many times but didn't even care because that ferry of the damned won me over
I found a castaways chest and was like Yeah cool imma sell this then got sunk by the kraken, so i went back and got a seafarers chest and then got sunk by the kraken. I proceeded to quit for the next month
i just started playing, on my first voyage a skeleton ship AND a megalodon spawned right on me right as i set sail, was wondering the whole game was gonna be like that
First voyage: I was with my friend we both just got the game went to explore the seas then we got fucked by the kraken
Now I can play it with my friends without being stupid lmao
10/10 just got the game yesterday and had no idea what I was doing, now excited to go out and get sank by krakens, eaten by sharks and hopefully make it back with a morsel or two of treasure. Many thanks El Capitano

im "legend of the sea of thieves" but its very nice to get back watching how i started this game
Played my first session of SOT yesterday. apparently you can't do the sparkly eyed guy's stuff until you're a pirate legend? Did a quick delivery quest for the merchant lady. Found out that it's best if you find out where on the island your delivery is BEFORE you take the crates off your ship. Swam out into the water to try out the Mermaid thing at one point, and spotted a barnacle covered chest on the bottom of the ocean. Turned it in to the hoarders when I got back to the outpost. Saw one small ghost ship (I think, there were skellies on it) but it turned tail and ran after a few cannon shots.
This was so wonderfully funny Falcore! Love this style of tutorial and I can't wait for the next one ❤

First day of playing and I decided to crank out 3 voyage quests in one go and then return them. Finished the third quest and didn't even notice a Skeleton Ship right on top of me.
The player following the ship decided I was a good target as well :T
One of the best things a newer player can do is (once they build up the courage) to join a galleon with four random people and play for a couple hours with them. I did that and I learned not to do things like storing loot on a lower floor and I learned to be a more confident player. Another big tip I suggest is to get yourself invested into this game. If you’re subscribed to a couple sot TH-camrs and watch their tips and tricks videos you’ll learn a lot
Edit: Also don’t be afraid to google a question you have about the game it might help
