A 12 volt mini rice cooker can cook one cup of dry rice with any solar power station with a 10 amp cigarette lighter port. Be sure to check the wattage of the cooker. The two I have are 100 watts. They use only 22-25% of the charge in my tiny Golabs r300 or my Rockpals 300w power station. And don`t forget 12v immersion water heaters for cups. My 120 watt one also works with these and you can heat water for tea, instant coffee, Ramen, or boil eggs in a cup. You can also cook various foods in the rice cooker and these can also be used in your car. Also look at AC rice cookers that have wattage that match your power station. Many are 200 to 300 watts and will work with 500 watt power stations. If conserving power unplug it early and allow the heat in it to finish the cooking.

I was once visiting my parents for dinner when lost power. I had been camping so still had one of those butane can cookers in my car. I boiled some water & filled their thermos so I grabbed the spares & visted the elderly neighbours. They were so pleased to be able to make a hot drink.

After surviving the Texas snowmageddon almost two years ago, I can tell I was prepared but can make improvements.
    1) stern did help warm up soups and boil water but a Spirit stove would help increase the heat. Thx great recommendation!
I have since added a makeshift oven for baking method to be used in the fireplace.
    2) layered clothing worked but I recommend wearing night hat to keep my head warm when I sleep.
    3) all though the fire place worked, a portable butane heater is needed incase I need to be on another room or out of firewood.
    4) I am looking at a long term method for bathing and washing clothes. Some people in my household thought it was business as usual and changed cloth like the academy awards. No electricity, no clean dry cloths or dishes or showers.
    😮

Another great stove to have is a Coleman dual fuel stove. Because you can have three fuel sources with one stove. White gas, unleaded gasoline, and you can buy an adapter and use propane also. That's a win win in my book.

I was given a dual burner white gas stove, takes a bit to get it figured out, but the fuel lasted 4 days and there was some left in the tank (it's a small tank, so I was impressed) and it worked extremely well. The weather was perfect for just setting up a shelter but we didn't always want a fire going...so the stove got some love. Also built a red brick rocket stove right beside a block fire pit that could prolly be pretty easily converted to an oven or a smoker. Just some other thoughts.
Good video, I enjoy your content. God bless and stay ready.

I got an oven for my Coleman liquid fuel stove. Baked rustic Dutch oven bread in it this summer. Came out great but you have to practice. And tend it carefully the flame height needs to managed to maintain temperature. I used a probe thermometer (digital with the wire attached that goes in the oven) slipped into an opening just hanging in the oven to monitor the temp as the one in the door wasn't as accurate. A dutch oven won't fit so I used a graniteware soup pot, parchment paper inside it to hold the dough and aluminum foil on the top of the pan for a cover.

I have been wanting to cook outside for a while, especially since here in Florida we sometimes have to go without power for a few day after hurricanes & tropical storms. I recently bought a tiny charcoal grill (camp size) and a butane grill from Walmart. I alternate between the 2 on my back patio. The charcoal grill is more time consuming and a lot more work, but also a lot more fun. I use tumbleweed fire starters instead of lighter fluid. The butane grill is easier to use and is quick. I like having the option to use either one.

Same here. After hurricane Irma I was out of electric for six days. I had supplies, and ate all my meals cold out of cans, because I wasn't sure about making a fire. Besides, it was in the 90's, and hot food was not my priority. But I also went and bought a tiny charcoal grill and got some self-starting charcoal. I since have learned how to cook over candles. All I really want is my coffee in the morning. The rest is good raw or out of cans with some oil and vinegar, like I did before. I also bought a battery-run fan for about $39. It's a fair size. Last time, I was sleeping with a spritz bottle of water it was so hot. Nothing like a power out situation to give us the incentive to be better prepared next time.

I was homeless for a few months several years ago. Turned it all around and am better now than I was before.
While homeless, I had a Kelly kettle. It was really great. The only problem was it developed a leak where the " thing" the wire bail connected thru was spot welded to the body of the kettle. It wasn't a huge leak, but enough to make sizzles in the fire.

Good advices. But I have other stoves. They are old and some are from the 30's 40's and 50's and back in the day very common in Europe. Kerosene/paraffin stoves. The ones with 3 or 4 wicks are great and they don't have any problems with larger pots.

Two things. I'm wondering about cooking with wood pellets in my mini stoves. Last, a funny story. A guy at a local Home Depot was arguing with another guy that mineral spirits wouldn't burn. Long story short he poured a good bit on the floor in a back room, and threw a match down. True story! Well, it burned a LOT of stuff and part of the building before the fire department got there. I watched them put out the fire. He's unemployed. 😔

JR, your a very intelligent man and as always thankfully sharing a lot of great information. I spent quite a few years as a Scoutmaster and learned a number of outdoor cooking methods, but since watching you I have purchased a rocket stove and a single burner propane/butane stove planning to do most of my emergency or survival cooking on those. My camping dutch oven would also figure into it using charcoal. Thankfully I'm far enough from my neighbors that the smell of the charcoal shouldn't be a factor. Thanks again!

💯% with ability to create a fire to boil water / warm water ( I downright despise cold-water showers ) Cook, Use the propane stock to fuel a generator, etc. Rocket stove type that utilizes “found fuels” such as tree branches/wood scraps, dried dung …. or whatever other less stinky fuel you can locate is a definite plus since it’s naturally scavenged fuels vs a fuel you need to purchase. Redundant cooking & heating sources for the win. Great topic you chose.

I have several models of the Firebox stove that uses all different fuels. The Gen 2 5” stove can take the weight of several large Dutch ovens too. Wood pellets are cheap and easy to find. Thanks JR, great practical advice as always! IMHO Kelly Kettles are a terrific bit of kit for sustainable water boiling outside and the optional hobo stove attachment is also useful for low volume cooking, when 'out and about'. I am fortunate to have multi-fuel/wood burning stove options and have also added portable butane and spirit burner stoves as backups in case my main propane kitchen stove goes down. As a low volume backup to any other available particulate filtration system you might already have, a Milbank filter "sock" is effective at removing sediments from water before boiling if it has been taken from a muddy stream, or if the available water source is visually murky looking. Particularly useful to help protect the life of the cartridge if you are in the field and use a Grayl filter or similar. Filling Thermos flasks and hot water bottles at home before planned power outages is also helpful.

This is a great roundup of options. I will only add that you should have multiple fuel options. For instance, that butane stove is also available in a butane/propane dual fuel model. Personally, I have a Coleman 425 white gas stove. It can also burn unleaded gasoline (that I can siphon from my cars). A propane conversion option is also available, should I want it.

A good rundown of options there, makes me think of getting hold of a rocket stove as an addition to the propane and alcohol options I already have, due to it being fueled with wood an therefore not reliant on fuels that have to be bought.

You aren't supposed to boil water with the plug in the Kelly Kettle. I have a couple of those I discovered in my grandfathers garage, they have the cork plugs not the new rubber.

    • @diypreppertv
      @diypreppertv  ปีที่แล้ว +1

The rubber plugs are different and are designed to be used when boiling. They have a vent that acts as a whistle. From the manufacturer: www.kellykettle.com/how-to-use-the-kelly-kettle

Jr! Appreciate the good advice again. I'm pretty much versatile when it comes to cooking foods, and a few different methods, i have also flameless ration heaters in stock.
But i have a question if you don't mind or any of your viewers, What is the safest way of cooking in a makeshift bunker, taking in mind that it will be all sealed off from outside, with makeshift ventilation pipes.
Thank you all in advance, just a question i need to put to bed so to speak.

@@diypreppertv Thank you Jr👍 I have a few idea's and plans for ventilation especially for using a compact wood burner with a flue pipe that reaches outside the protective space.
But my research keeps leading me to the same path.... carbon monoxide!
So i understand that you need plenty of ventilation, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning , however in a makeshift bunker this proves difficult in an NBC situation.
Would a fan to circulate the air in side the bunker be enough?
Thank you in advance really appreciate any advise possible.
Take care Jr, Make It Safe 👍👊

As for Trangia stove - I've boiled 7 litres of soup on it and then cooked hotdogs, I filled it to just under the top and got a burn for about 15 minutes or so. It was not a problem. I'm a camper/bushcrafter/prepper from the UK - most of our winters are no way as bad as yours just longer. But we do get the tail end of storms from Florida and the Caribbean here, they can cause a bit of damage.
Camping got me into Bushcraft and Prepping. I use a lot of stuff and techniques I learnt when serving. In Pathfinder School and out on the tours you got to do a lot of things that transpose right into prepping, camping and Bushcraft. Learning those techniques for civilians would aid a longer life in staying alive, most of them don't need a firearm, they don't involve high technology or army manoeuvres - they just require the right mind set. It ain't John Wayne and it ain't John Rambo - it's about thinking right and learning simple techniques to stay alive and working as a team to get through.
