With regards to getting home and/or evacuating - I have ordanance survey maps and a compass in my car. If the sat nav fails, I have a backup navigation method. I have also gone for drives to areas I have never been to, and then worked back home using the maps to practice. This is worth doing; as before I got the maps - I have gotten into situations where the roads I know have been unexpectedly closed and I have found myself diverted down back roads in the countryside with no GPS or phone signal at dusk with not much petrol in the tank. Horrible feeling being lost - do yourself a favour and don't let it happen to you.

I have a basic three step approach to determining if we have been hit with an EMP. 1. The lights go out unexpectedly: 2. Check your phone, If it's not working; 3. Check if your vehicles start. If they do not, there's a very good chance there was an EMP given all of these electrical/electronic devices have suddenly and simultaneously stopped working.

EMP will not affect your vehicle. It takes a long antenna to accept an EMP. The electrical grid is for sure at risk, but small appliances, vehicles, and the like will not burn out from an EMP.

    • @tpokmedia7828

Most vehicles are safe from an EMP, most not all but most. If the electronic device you are relying upon has an LCD or a UI to be able to access modes and functionality you better make sure it is un a faraday cage. Small appliances like a CPAP machine are relatively safe because they do not have a UI to them or are still using analog switches. Things like a solar generator that have the digital display and are reliant upon a small processor to track voltage regulation and such are definitely not. For chest freezers, placing 2 or 3 folded blankets on top of the freezer, covering the entire surface within a couple hours of the power going out can increase the time before things start to melt. We managed to keep the contents of our very full freezer frozen for 4.5 days without power during a September snowstorm in 2014. While it may not help with a major EMP, it can certainly help with shorter emergencies.

I had a certified plumber come out to our house yesterday to install a back flow valve in our sewage clean out pipe so that no sewage would enter our house if the situation got that bad. Since we live on a hill, he was honest and said that although he'd love to charge me $1,800.00 to install it, we really didn't need one. He said the houses at the bottom of the hill need one. He looked at our street and said the sewage will force the lid off the manhole cover and will flow downhill towards the houses down there. There really wasn't any way it would ever flow back into our house. I also asked him about the inflatable ball that can be inserted in the sewage clean out pipe and he said by the time you realize you need it, it will be too late and sewage will already be in your house. I absolutely loved this video and got so much useful information from it. THANK YOU!!!

If your children are at school, their first plan , in an emergency is to put the children on school busses and take them to a central location for parents to pick them up. A friend of mine has told his daughter to "escape" and make her way to a pre chosen safe waypoint.

It also evaporates the flavors/oils. Have you ever noticed your eyes burning when cooking with hot peppers? Add spices and salt after food is cooked or let the person who eats it add it to taste. One of the worst things you can do, say to fried fish, is put so much salt in the coating that you can`t eat it, plus you waste salt. If I add salt it isn`t in the cornmeal I coat it in. I like dipping my fried fish in ketchup or a sauce and use that as the salt source. Rice cookers, especially smaller ones, are great low wattage cooking tools for using with tiny portable solar power stations. Many are below 300w and work with the small budget battery packs for cooking a wide variety of foods.

It should be said (I missed it if it was) no one really knows what an EMP will do to everything, of course the grid or parts of it will likely go down, but there is no telling what it will do to modern cell phones, cars, generators and other medium to small electronics like fridges. For all we know they will be completely unharmed, or everything with the simplest circuit board could be fried, we just don't know for sure. But these are some good steps regardless.

    • @diypreppertv
      @diypreppertv  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

It’s possible, but would probably depend on several factors. A worst case scenario would be a house right under the EMP with bad wiring inside the house and poorly maintained utility equipment outside. If it’s dry outside, that wouldn’t help either of sparks start dropping from lines or transformers onto dead grass.

  • @jamesconley9753

Something else that happened during the Carrington Event was it messed with railway signaling systems. They say that it is theoretically easier to turn a green signal red, but, that a smaller solar storm can turn a green signal red easier than the other way round power-wise. They were not able to determine which way was absolutely more likely to occur. I also heard that there were reports of wooden railway sleepers catching on fire during the event. Telegraph operators were able to continue operating their telegraphs with the batteries DISCONNECTED...and some were able to communicate EASIER than they normally could. They didn't have wireless in 1859, but if they had, I can imagine the skip would have been just IMMENSE!

Have had advice to keep a GO bag in your car -water, head lamp, granola bars, reflective blanket, lighter/matches, jacket and hat, extra pair of socks, etc... be aware of where you are and know how to get home.... Our first 6 years in our home we had no water or power, so we have been there - a creek flows along one side of our land and I have bought an easy, cheap water system and filters - look for a guy who goes by 'goneagain' on TH-cam and he will show you that. You may also need something to save rain water in. If you have meat in the freezer, start smoking it! And if you can before any of this - gather together a community - find different strengths within that community and help each other!

Keep batteries in an airtight metal tin (tight fitting lid). I have ours sorted by size, each in a different tin.

Wont they rust faster in a tin?

@@melanieoliver3294 I've never had batteries rust in the tin. But I keep them in their original packaging - inside the airtight tin.

What would be the best way to protect your solar stuff, vehicles, and other things from an EMP?
How could you protect yourself from fall-out if you live in an RV or a mobile home?

      EMP Shield or similar devices

Biggest immediate question is how would you know if you were experiencing a regular power outage or an EMP farther away than what would immediately effect your personal items but does shut down the country? If all coms go down you wouldn't know if it's a service problem or ww3

Currently our star would be a likely source for an emp type event. 2nd would be an attack. Keep abreast of situation in Middle East and Ukraine. Things can go hot in an instant.

For long-term food security, pressure canning. You can preserve non-acid foods like meat and vegetables for a year or two. You can preserve fully finished meals like chili, curries, and soups. For bugging out, you can save money by storing meal replacement powders/bars instead of investing in MREs or other emergency rations which can be costly. We use a vegan protein powder as it has more nutrients than regular protein powders, and more protein than regular meal replacement powders.

i've got 3 rocks and some wood. i'll still be able to cook and stay warm . but that's only if i'm not at home with a bbq pit. look folks, keep 3 months minimum of all non perishable items. and rotate that stock and replenish weekly of any usage, and also build more inventory as you go.. if you are able. put any possible electronic items not effected in a lead encased box if the emp reoccurs. . but remember. our for fathers seem too make it without a cel phone. why can't you
