Let me share this. In 1998, during an ice storm in Montreal, Quebec, the grid was down for 2+ weeks. Ice had felled electric lines and trees alike. I was living in a 4-storey apartment block. At the start of week 2 of the blackout, police officers came door-to-door through our building to evacuate the tenants to sleep en masse on the floor of a school auditorium. When they knocked on my door and I opened it, the police jumped back, startled. "You have power!?" they cried. I said, "Hi, would you like to come in for dinner?” I had light, heat, and the Cantonese chow mein was cooking. And I was doing it all with 24-hour candles I had bought in bulk at the local dollar store. To cook, I was using an antique mesh-wire foldable frying basket that had been just a decoration on my top shelf. I took it down, put a saucer in the base, arranged three candles in the saucer, sticking them in place with their own melted wax. I then balanced a 2-inch deep enamel pan on the wide, top edge of the basket, and was able to use it to boil water for me and a neighbour, and best of all to cook. It was just like cooking on gas. To keep the cold to a minimum, I had used masking tape to cover the big picture windows with newspaper. This prevented the glass from transmitting too much cold indoors, and from cooling the air I was heating with clumps of candles in ceramic dishes. The police officers understood that I didn’t need to be evacuated, and left me in peace, the only tenant in the entire building who didn’t have to leave. And probably the only one that didn’t catch a cold sleeping with hundreds of others on an auditorium floor. The fresh produce for the cooking came from a small store downstairs in the next building where they had a generator, so I just went down each day to buy fresh and make my tasy meals on my candle-fry-basket.

@@lillianelliott1868 Keep in mind that is only for the stove top. The gas/propane stovetop will work with a match but the oven will not work. First I LOVE the kitty dish! Just wanted to add a few suggestions. We went through Sandy in NJ 2012, I cooked up every piece of meat 4 days out when the suggestion of the storm hitting us came over the airwaves. I then refroze all the meaty meals in aluminum pans in the deep freezer. Of course we lost power for 9days and trees were down all around us we were basically trapped in our home! We reheated the meals in sterno racks or on the grill and ate very well over the course of the disaster. Our deep freezer held up very well and kept everything nice and cold. I did check the temp of food before warming it up just in case. I almost threw out my mother’s fondue pot but thought it would be awesome for soup! You have excellent ideas! Thank you for sharing.
I am so happy that you found this useful. I like to think outside of the box and creatively. See you on the next one, and thank you for sharing your story with us, it is very relatable. Cheers!

Oh Darn Sandy, I have heard of this from some of my other subscribers that are in Australia. There may be challenging times ahead, but if you practice self reliance when you are calm and collected, I promise it will feel like camping...in the house...lol...if the grid goes down. Cheers!
Have you got hot water bottles? If power is out and you can boil water you can make a hot water bottle. I put one behind my back as it's sore and found it really does wonders to warm you up. I also fill empty glass screw lid wine bottles with hot water and use these to warm up my bed. . Becareful not to put too hot water in , so the glass doesn't crack. I found these really hold the heat well. I Hope you stay safe and warm .🇦🇺🕊️🩷
When I was younger living in CT, we had power outages all the time. My parents use to break out the Colman camp stove to cook. It worked perfectly. It's always good to have one of these on hand for such occasions. Later years, we also had a kerosene heater for the colder months, which did the job. Kerosene is more expensive than it use to be but it is good for emergencies especially if you don't have a generator or a woodstove. It's also good to have a carbon monoxide monitor while running a kerosene heater. It does smell when you first start it up and then the odor goes away.

Really enjoyed your video. Great ideas. My suggestion is that you could use tent pegs to thread into your utensil holder stove to lift up a smaller sterno or fancy heat can. Someone else mentioned a can to put inside to lift up your gel fuel can. So many creative ideas.
Thank you for that tip! I have a similar camping stove meant to use wood fuel and was wondering how to make that work for inside since the rack seemed too far down for my sterno or chafing dish fuels, will have to try the tent stakes or maybe shish kebob sticks😁.
Butane one burner. They are small and used by chefs for demonstrations and work perfectly. Texas winter storm and I cooked on it. Bought more butane canisters for this winter.
Hello, Yes that is a good choice and I do have one of those. This video was created for people that may not prepare for power outages. Having creative ideas that are from some basic household items may help those folks. And thanks for suggesting the butane stove. Cheers!

Such wonderful practical ideas. I love them. I will definitely be stocking up sterno or terra flame canister. I never gave them a thought before believing they only kept food warm. I have a grill out back but if it's cold I'd rather be able to cook inside and out of the wind (might not be much warmer inside during a power outage).
Hello Sandy, word on the street is that this year will be filled with storms, cold and possible power outages. Be prepared and have fun with it. Cheers!
You were very informative with the food items and mixing them together.....I've not seen a video on this topic yet and I have done a bunch of searching also. Keep it up thank you very much from Virginia.
Very bad food choices, not real food. As Putin said 'americans are sick fat and dead' he was referring to our fake food. Choose real whole foods. You are very mislead Earnie. Look back at your childhood and what you ate then.
You're so elegant!!!🌞 That first cooker is awesome! I use mayonnaise on my grilled cheese. I just spread a small amount on the bread, then cook!!! It's tasty! Thanks for all the great ideas. Very informative video!🌺
An iron kettle or pan would heat up better IMHO, and hold heat longer at a lower heat. Use them all the time on my electric stove. Great to use for outdoor cooking if over a wood fire.
So happy for you to own these, and for the rest of the world my ideas are equally just as good, as I demonstrated in this video. But, thanks for watching and throwing your 2 cents in. Cheers!
Hi. Brilliant video. I notice that you have the same Corning Ware casserole dishes that I inherited from my gran. Very useful. I’m Australian BTW and a lot of people here are without power tonight in the state of Victoria.
Hi Susan I am Oz too. We lost ours to a storm 2 nights ago. It was after tea, so no problem. Could just get an early night. Hope you get yours back soon. I learnt heaps from this video.
Hi Susan from down under. I am so sorry that you guys are experiencing power outages, and I hope that you have safe alternate ways to survive. May things resolve soon. Cheers!
Thank you for noticing. I like quirky hacks that actually work. Please take the time to look through your house to see what you can use. If you do not have anything then consider buying some items new or from second hand stores. Cheers!
Excellent video Mindy. You are the coolest bus Mom ever. I have alot of these items and you have given my so many new ones to get as far as food stuff. Thanks so much. 🧘🙏🌎☮️
Hi there 9thE. I'm on the same page. 😊👍 I even have the same foods prepped. These methods work, I've used them during outages. I used a smaller pot with lid to boil water. I also used a smaller stainless steel fry pan, and was able to sear a small steak- it got very hot. You could easily do hot dogs or burgers imo. Very easy to heat any canned goods. I set mine up on my stove on a metal baking sheet for extra safety. I also purchased a camping mess kit in case. Looking at a Haines solar oven too. Cheers! ✌
Hello BI, thank you for your note. I agree about the smaller, thinner walled pots and pans, and yes they do work. In an attempt to keep things simple and food safe, I went with fast cooking foods and cooked meat. I would hate for anyone to fail at cooking meat, and then get sick. I am going to look up the Haines Solar oven as well. See you again soon and welcome to the channel. Cheers!
Hi Anne, thanks for viewing this. It is nice to know that there are other meals that can be used in an Emergency that are affordable and tasty. If you did not see my last Live with Isaac cooking, I did not like the MRE and the Moutain House meals. They both tasted like garbage. Have fun and stay safe. Cheers!
Hi Bridget, I am so happy that you got a few ideas. For me, it was all about reinvigorating old knowledge. With modern food technology now, there are so many everyday meals that are way more delicious than emergency food kits. Thanks for watching, Cheers!
Such GREAT ideas!! Everything looked great! Thanks for these AWESOME tips!! I do have one that I'd like to share, Powdered Skim Milk, I use it every morning for my cereal, no worrying about refrigeration! It's also great for soups, and Mac and Cheese! Lol ... I was thinking 'ketchup' with the grilled cheese and then you said it, Great Canadian minds think alike!
Yes, I have a supply of powdered milk as well. If the grid goes down during the warmer months, the refrigerated milk won't last long. Also, I keep powdered milk on hand for the grandkids and neighbors with little ones.
Awh thank you dear, I'm not a seasoned in prepping but trying. Making little individual bags. Kids call them mama G's MRE'S. THANK YOU SWEETS .BLESSINGS FROM LAS VEGAS.
Louisa, I LOVE that. What do you put in the little bags? It is always good to have a plan and try it out before you need it. Then in an emergency it really only feels like camping...in the house. Much love from Oregon, Cheers!
Hi Crystal, that is so funny that my Dollar Store meals made you hungry. I can give a very positive report on these meals, and they are much tastier than the MRE meals that I tried in my Livestream. Also, they are way cheaper. Cheers!
I put my oats with liquid (water, almond milk, or whatever) and my add-ins (like raisins, cocoa nibs, berries, or nuts) in a mason jar and let it stand on the counter overnight. By morning, the oats are soft, the fruit is plump, and I can add in warm water or milk if I want to. Really, it doesn’t need to be cooked.
Using the utensil holder: i bought the one you showed on Amazon and I had good luck and bad. The canned fuel kept being extinguished when I placed the pot on top so I switched to a smaller Sterno style gel can and that worked fine. This method would work well for one or two people and for foods that only require a quick heat- up. Also- I found myself being concerned about the pot being knocked off the utensil holder. That didn’t happen however because I sat nearby the whole time. I’m practicing now- winter is coming! Positive point: I now have a sense of satisfaction about being ready for any upcoming winter emergencies. Im not dreading a power outage now. ⛄️ Thank you!
YAY! You understand the point of practicing. I know that these methods are not perfect, BUT, I wanted to empower people to think outside of the box and utilize common household items for emergencies. It is not necessary to have MRE meals and fancy stoves. Remember, you are not trying to cook a Holiday Dinner, you are trying to survive. Be safe, Cheers!
If you ever do want to get a dedicated pot holder they have them for backpacking. Usually they're standalone fire grates or backpacking pot stands. I think Coghlan makes one that's at big box stores
Excellent! Thank you very much! By the way, I really appreciate the meal examples. The gel fuel in the Corning Ware with the rack on top was an eye opener. LOL.
Hi Kelsi, it does not hurt to be prepared, and please try out food with your preferred stove so that you will know what to do when it is a stressful situation. Good luck, Cheers!
I just picked up one of those utensil pots with holes at the Goodwill because all of my utensil pots do not have holes. I would need to use a sterno so I will look for a block or something to raise the level of the sterno. Good video! Lots of good ideas!
Hi Grammy, I am glad that you found this. There are links in the description to fuel options like Gas One and such. I use an empty can underneath the new one, works great. Stay safe and be well, Cheers!

Hi James, YES please practice preparedness and safe sex during the element of romance. Cheers!
I used a ferro rod to light my alcohol stove and spilled the alcohol everywhere. Learned a lot from that 😬
@@no_peace Ouch! Harsh as that was, better now than in an emergency, and I'm sure that is your point. Thanks for the timely lesson.
Thank you. Though we all need some more sustainable meals.
We in Ireland have also been warned of power outages this winter..thank you Mindy for your tips..stay safe and warm ❤☘
Great tips and childhood stories. Thank you, Cheers!
I'm going to have to try your oatmeal!!
Yummy! Cheers!
Hi Mindy...im naming you Miss Ingenioustity !!! Debra, I am so honored and touched that you get a kick out of me. I did not plan on being a TH-camr so this is a Wild Ride for me. Pack a snack, buckle in and stick around. There will be miles and miles of smiles here. Cheers!
THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION MANY BLESSINGS
You are so welcome, Cheers!
Good stuff ... food looks great too ... and a way to cook in emergency ...
Yes, thank you Cheers!
Great information. Thank you!
You are so welcome. I enjoy breaking things down to simple. Being prepared is not that hard, and most of us have basic stuff to get us through for a few days. Stay sweet and safe. Cheers!
Really enjoyed your video. Great ideas. My suggestion is that you could use tent pegs to thread into your utensil holder stove to lift up a smaller sterno or fancy heat can. Someone else mentioned a can to put inside to lift up your gel fuel can. So many creative ideas.
Rosie, thank you for this tip. I went out to the Tubes and investigated this. Cool hack idea. Thank you, Cheers!
Thank you for that tip! I have a similar camping stove meant to use wood fuel and was wondering how to make that work for inside since the rack seemed too far down for my sterno or chafing dish fuels, will have to try the tent stakes or maybe shish kebob sticks😁.
Thank you so much...Jesus is Lord
Namaste' Cheers!
Cheers!
Yeah sounds good.
I love the rocket stove concept ty
Hi Nadia, yes I love that one too. Cheers!
What a great channel ! Thank you for all of your tips .
Thanks for watching! Cheers!
Mindy! I'm here originally bc of Jaylena, (in the crocker days 😖) and found you from Issac's channel!
I'm a full time motorhome resident, and will never forget making solar soup in the dashboard when I was off grid! Even coffee and teas.
Hello and welcome to my channel, and thank you for giving me a chance to entertain you. May you find fun and uplifting content here always. See you again soon, Cheers!
oh look at this :) Good job Mindy
My Filipino Knees & Toes friend told me to make one a month like this film. I listened and he was right. Filipino Bus Dudes are the smartest on TH-cam. Hugs!
For those of you who read all of the comments and you don't know who the Filipino is check out Isaac's channel A BUS LIFE STORY his latest video is SPOT ON >>>>> th-cam.com/video/7ccsICNvKcQ/w-d-xo.html
Like the music 🎶
Hi Earnie, thank you for noticing this. I was intentional on being unique. Cheers!
Very bad food choices, not real food. As Putin said 'americans are sick fat and dead' he was referring to our fake food. Choose real whole foods. You are very mislead Earnie. Look back at your childhood and what you ate then.
EXCELLENT! THANK YOU... GREAT PRESENTATION.. 😊
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
You're so elegant!!!🌞 That first cooker is awesome! I use mayonnaise on my grilled cheese. I just spread a small amount on the bread, then cook!!! It's tasty! Thanks for all the great ideas. Very informative video!🌺
Hi Hun, why thank you. lol! Mayo is a GREAT idea. I am going to try that. So happy that you enjoyed this. Cheers!
Amazing video! Already my favorite! Thank you!
Thank you, I enjoy being prepared as well as thinking "outside the box" in creative ways to be sustainable. Cheers!
Very informative, I can do this. Thank you
You can do it! Cheers!
Love that butter hugger!!!
Thanks Patricia, the link for it is in the description. Cheers!
Hi Sweet Lady!!!❤ Thank you for all the good advice 🙏😊
You are so welcome, please come back anytime. Cheers!
Thank you for the ideas.
You are so welcome! Cheers!

Ty for this video...👊👍💯🙏
You are welcome. Cheers!
I just discovered your channel, love your tips and your creativity,

Thank you MP. Perhaps you will enjoy the Honda Element Camper Van Build series. Cheers!
I use tea candles ..placed the tea candle under a metal candle holder..placed a small pot on top of the metal candle holder and warmed up my food..
Excellent video, Thank you for sharing.
I hope you are prepared, Cheers!
You always make me hungry. Love the video :)
Dude! hello, never come to Ninth Element without a snack. Cheers!
Cheers!
Great food ideas! Thanks.
Cheers!
Thank you TW, Cheers!
Thank You. Very Good Video. Especially The Different way To Make Food.
Hello Elly, thank you for appreciating The Dollar Store Emergency Meal Plan! lol! Sometimes you just have to think outside of the box. Cheers!
Cheers!
Tomato soup and grilled cheese 😋
So good, Cheers!
Thanks Mindy, love gaining ideas.
Cheers!
Lady
U gave me some great ideas
Thank you
You are so welcome. Being Prepared is not that hard. Cheers!
Very informative. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome, adventures coming soon. Cheers!
If you put a lid on the pan it would take less time and actually brown faster
Love the great ideas. Thankyou for sharing.
Ellie those are great tips. Please continue to share your wise nuggets of wisdom. Cheers!
It makes everything that needs "cooked with milk" taste sooooooo much better ❣️
I keep powdered whole milk in my kitchen since I hardly ever need a lot of milk. The brand is Nido and is in the Latin section of the supermarket.
Yes, I have a supply of powdered milk as well. If the grid goes down during the warmer months, the refrigerated milk won't last long. Also, I keep powdered milk on hand for the grandkids and neighbors with little ones.
And now this word from our sponcers.
Right? Cheers!
Ooh look at the dollar store for the tiny paper bull nose clips to hold that grill on your corningware dish securely.
Love It! Got you thinking for me and everyone reading. Keep the ideas coming. Cheers!
Thank you for sharing. Safe travels.😊
Great video Mindy. Very Informative.
Hello Paul, thank you. Hopefully you found this very relaxing for an Emergency Prepper video. Cheers!
Great ideas😊😊
Thank you, Cheers!
you are an inspiration Im loving your journey with all the bus folks
Thank you, Cheers!
you are fantastic!!! thank you!!!
John, You Rock! Cheers!
Thank you.
You are so welcome Charlotte. I hope that I planted some positive seeds in your noggin. Cheers!
you are very clever, thanks, I loved these suggestions. keep safe.
Beef stew sounds wonderful right now but I'm to lazy to go to the store and get some. You made me hungry Ms Mindy!
Hi Crystal, that is so funny that my Dollar Store meals made you hungry. I can give a very positive report on these meals, and they are much tastier than the MRE meals that I tried in my Livestream. Also, they are way cheaper. Cheers!
Love It, I'm Prepared Now, Thank You Mindy💯👍🏾👏🏽‼‼‼
Hi George, I am so happy that you have a back up plan. May you never need to use except for practice. Cheers!
Thank you for the informative video. Lots of easy ways to cook in an emergency that many would not think of. Very well done!
Thanks JP, simplicity at it's finest. Cheers!
Cute cat bowl. I want that!
It was a gift. I have seen them in Asian food stores for sale. Cheers!
Another reason why I have a charcoal and gas grill
Good for you! Cheers!
Oats don’t really need to be cooked. Overnight oats are great. If you want them warm, add warmed milk to the bowl.
True, but this is a video that shows how to cook during a power outage.
Personally, I do not like the taste of soaking oatmeal overnight, do you?
I use my thermos for cooking oatmeal. Oatmeal and hot water in the thermos takes about 40 minutes or so...time it takes to walk my dog.
@@sharonbeckmon9837 to me, the taste is the same. The texture is slightly different, but I add in a lot of stuff, too.
@@hartmanartsource I'm a Malt-o-meal kinda guy but hot oat meal and butter is darn good too..
Love the videos, so sweet and helpful! 🤍✨
So glad that you liked this, see you again soon. Cheers!
I looked, "coghlan pot stand" gets a bunch of promising results on amazon
Thank you, I will look into this and possibly try it. Cheers!
Great ideas, thanks!
Glad you like them! Cheers!
Excellent! Thank you very much! By the way, I really appreciate the meal examples. The gel fuel in the Corning Ware with the rack on top was an eye opener. LOL.
Hey Wink, thinking outside of the box is fun. So glad that you enjoyed this one. More to come. Cheers!
Thank you this video is so informative and I'll definitely be getting a few of the items you've shown here.
A empty can could be used to raise the Sterno up
Great ideas!! 🥰
