  • Organize my entire vintage sewing pattern collection with me. It has been hard for me to choose my next sewing project because I HAVE HAD A FEW TO MANY SEWING PATTERN HAULS.Now that are all over the sewing room and I now have a very large collection of over 100 vintage sewing patterns and in this video I organize, sort and store them all.
If you like this sort of thing let me know and I will film the process when I go through all of my other sewing patterns. I have over 100 modern sewing patterns as well and lots of vintage reproduction sewing patterns that I do not show in this video. this was a very big task and now that it is completed I am able to actually see what sewing patterns I have and find inspiration on what I want to sew next.

I know, I'm watching this too late to get in on the giveaway (congratulations on the YT milestone, by-the-by). You realize that you could use Simplicity 4098 as the basis for a Chanel-style jacket? You wouldn't necessarily have to use horsehair canvas for the interlayer - the Grannies seemed to get around that by using a layer of muslin or a thicker cotton canvas-like material to pad stitch the collars and the cuffs... It would also make a good basis for a Dior style bar jacket (just do some padding on the hips).

I am having a lot of trouble with sorting and organizing my own patterns. 😢 I have approximately 3000 patterns. Yes, I have a problem. I love vintage patterns ❤. I decided to photograph and begin cataloging in a book so that I know which drawer and row I can find each pattern. I also make my own patterns, so it’s crazy. I love them all and I hope to make them all in my lifetime. 🙏

Your collection is wonderful - some truly beautiful patterns!
If the binders in the box fit edge down/spine up, that makes it look streamlined & is easy to dust (instead of dust collecting within the pages)...so you’d just see the 4 or 5 spines.

I’ve seen some ppl take the pattern pieces out of their original envelopes and put them in new envelopes marked with the pattern number, these are stored on a shelf in a certain order. They put the original envelopes into a binder like you did, just without all the bulk of the pattern pieces so it’s less bulky and easy to flip through to find the pattern you want

I copy the front of all my patterns, then file the patterns in a file cabinet. I then take the copy and put it in a folder divided up by category. If I want a skirt pattern, then I go to that category and look at all the patterns I have of skirts. It also allows you to put that pattern in more than 1 category (such as dress and then also in jackets)

I hear you. I have so many patterns as well, and I have put them in shoe boxes that fit in filing cabinets, as there are four boxes per drawer. That way I can pull out a box and go through them. I love vintage pattersn. My fave that you have are coats...., caplets and swing coats. Advanced 6971 all the way....... Keep inspiring.

Hey Ms. Drew, thank you for sharing your patterns. You have some really stunning pieces, well done, you.
I'm coming to the end of my time searching for patterns on the ebay (I've bought about 50 - variety of different tops, skirts, dresses, bolero jackets, coats, underpinnings, PJ's, pants and accessories like gloves, hats and belts... I have enough/spent enough to last me for a good long while). I've somehow managed to find my size (or a size just under my actual measurements) in patterns from the 30's, 40's and 50's. I may store them by decade. I may store them by garment type. Haven't decided yet. I haven't settled on what I'll be storing them in - maybe in comic book storage boxes?
If you ever want to do repairs to your envelopes you should be able to find acid-free document tape at your local independent art store or framing shop. Regular tape will literally burn through the paper over time (the same with sticky notes). If you're looking for acid-free clear envelopes to store the fragile patterns in, the comic book sleeves are a decently priced alternative.
I'm going to be transferring my patterns to dot and cross paper whenever I do a make from a pattern. That way I can make all of my alterations and keep the originals intact. Because a) resale value is maintained if I ever (ha!) decide to part with any of them and b) these ladies aren't being produced any more (the prices for these patterns can only go up and I want to preserve them as best I can for future history).
Major is going to absolutely love that cape when she's ready for it...

This is the video I have been waiting for! I loved seeing all your patterns. It's fun to see which patterns different people gravitate to. I have well over 150 Vintage patterns myself. I went all out and use the comic book sleeve method. I also made a Pinterest board for all my patterns that's broken down into sections; blouses, coordinates, dresses by decade, etc.. It's been very nifty to have so I can quickly scroll through and see what I have without rummaging.
I love the McCall's nightgown pattern and the McCall dress I think numbered 7583, they're just darling! 1940s McCall's patterns are my favorite.
Also I have a few of the same patterns! I have Simplicity 3745, 4949, & 4098. They definitely are good basic patterns that my wardrobe is in desperate need of haha.

@@SewSewDrew haha well you can always still get them. I used to get them from a local comic book store but I bought them on Amazon last time. I also keep them in the Comic book storage boxes which look like they would fit nicely beside your TV. I have close to 150 spread comfortably between 3 boxes

I've struggled with keeping all my patterns organized. One thing I did was to get a pattern organizing app for my tablet called Pattern Buddy. Unfortunately the designer of the software has stopped supporting it and it no longer available for download. It was great, but now I have to come up with something else. There are some different apps available for organizing patterns, fabric, and supplies, but all of them are missing something that I think is necessary for organizing so I quickly uninstalled them. I finally settled on photographing the front and back of each pattern envelope and putting them into a Google Doc, so I have a folder of everything I have. I have a different file for each pattern company. I don't know exactly how many patterns I have, but I'm sure it's well over 200 between the Big 4 and several smaller independent pattern companies. Every once in a while I print out when I get more patterns I print out the file and put those pages into a notebook I have so I can look at what I have without having to go through my storage boxes. I have 2 boxes Butterick, 1 box for McCalls, 1 for Vogue, Simplicity, and the smaller envelopes of independent pattern companies. Then I use a Banker Box for the larger patterns. Oh, and I bought some large zip-top bags, 10" wide by 13" long, specifically for the PDF patterns I have bought. I had previously been using gallon size freezer zip-top bags for the patterns but will slowly be replacing them with the larger bags because I trace out all my patterns and so the envelop they came in ends being way to small. I'll have to make a video about how I store my patterns for my channel, that way I can explain everything. But that will have to wait until I finish rearranging my sewing area. I've run out of places to put things. LOL

Just in case my name gets drawn, I
think my *personal* favorite is the advance 6333
(But, with more ease in the lower bodice) These days I wear more loose and flowy clothes, with a hint of shape
I do like your sense of style, and would enjoy to see any on you that you want to share with us
It's absolutely not my decision to make, of course. But, I wanted to let you know that 4 or more ads got on this video (sometimes TH-cam sneaks ads into other creator's videos, so I mention it just in case)
In answer to your question about storage methods: instead of notebooks, maybe you could try "hanging" files? They fit in a filing cabinet, like the drawers you have some other patterns in(grey and white geometric design on the drawers). They are sort of shaped like manilla folders, but, they have little hooks that hook them onto either side of the drawer & you could put the protected patterns into them, and the whole thing into the closet, maybe. They do make one drawer sized filling cabinets, so, it could happen. You may even find some that fit those geometric drawers, for your other patterns.
