This week is the great Costume Pattern Organization video that I asked if people wanted to see! I got a resounding yes, so here's my version of a Pattern Storage Hack! I show you how I organize and store my costuming patterns as well as a brief overview of the brands that I like and trust for different eras of costuming. I have a few at the moment, but my big 4 patterns fit in a shoebox and my Reconstructing History patterns fit in a Priority mailing box. I'm not quite at this level yet!
Well I had 2 patterns a year ago... now 40. The chaos came quicker than expected 😂

My method for cataloging them is to either copy/print the front of the pattern or take the envelope and put it into a clear plastic binder sleeve. I collect all of these in a binder, that lets me flip through it, like you would a pattern book in the store. I then put the patterns in an envelope, write the company and number on it, and store it in those vertical paper holders from ikea on a book shelf in alphabetical->numerical order. It feels really like how fabric stores do it, and it's really easy to find the stuff. Digital patterns, I'll just print out a picture or some representation and store it the same way in the binder, but leave the pdf on my computer until I'm ready for it. One binder holds all the references to my patterns at the moment. That's really convenient.
That sounds awesome! I need mine in my phone so I know I have whatever pattern it is wherever I am. A binder is cool, but it costs money and takes up space and it’s not everywhere I am!
I do something similar. I have different binders for kids, men and women with a photo copy of the front. The patterns are then filed numerically in a filing cabinet. It works for me which is what matters

I made a tiny doll dress for my mom, I hand sewed it and that's the sum total is things I have sewn. I watched the whole last season I'd Lucifer and joined at least three Facebook sewing groups.
Still just trying to stay positive.
I have a mini steamer trunk that I keep all my patterns in. For me, I have to organize by the year of the pattern. So they go from Tudor period to 1950’s. (Because I like all the pretty dresses) But I find that the majority of my patterns are 1860’s-1890’s, because bustles my friends. I found that my brain can’t function to find patterns any other way than this. Also I must agree with you on laughing moon and truly Victorian, the Dore corset is amazeballs and goes together so well. (Same with their Victorian undergarments) I also like the original victorian patterns from Peterson’s Magazine, The Deliniator, Godey’s, etc.. I find that making those by just inserting my measurements is sometimes easier than using other patterns. Because I am 6’1” tall and let’s face it no pattern company makes anything for us tall girls. Especially when you are also pear shaped with big boobs. Nothing fits right out the gate and can lead to mock up hell. So I have printed out tons of those and played around until I got the repro-ing just right. Any who I have rambled enough, have a super great day! 💜
I am 5'1" to your 6'1". They don't really make stuff for buxom little women either.
I've been lurking and watching for a little while, but I had to comment on the fluffy night gown. I actually bought that pattern when it came out, and have made it.
Favorite nightgown ever.
One comment on the pattern though. They seem to have forgotten to shorten the length of the body pieces to account for the hem ruffles. So check your pattern length before cutting. I'm 5'8" and the nightgown and robe were floor length on me before I added any ruffles! My other advice is to check the waist trim placement on the robe, and adjust it to wherever is going to work best for your bust size. There isn't a separate waist seam, so it's fairly easy to put that eyelet higher or lower as needed to get the "waistline" in the right spot.
It was a while ago, but I think I got the whole project done in a weekend. Hmmm.... maybe I should make that again.

You have an extraordinary pattern collection, and time/type is clearly the best way to organize them. This was cool to watch.
Edited to add that I'm still in the 'write it on a piece of paper' place of labeling, but I too cover with packing tape LOL
I do not have this issue at all, I have like less than 10 patterns (it's probably more like 5 but just in case I have forgotten some I'm going with 10), but this is handy with a run down on brands etc. Today I made a card (one whole card, go me LOL) for World Cardmaking Day, and flicking through some more embroidery designs on Antique Pattern Library to see if I can find something to stitch on some pockets I want to make for my hobbit skirts
So now we want to know where/how you store all the magnificent creations! And a fashion show!

"I am Godzilla" - I laughed so hard I almost spilled my tea! Finding the exact storage boxes you want is such a pain (so when you find them, get like, 20). Collage move in season and holiday season are the best time to find storage/organization things. Thanks for sharing your collection!

Oh man! What a glorious collection! I'm just a thrifter, estate saler and I pay 25 cents to 50 cents for mainly vintage patterns even though I am heavily into basic blocks for sewing. I just discovered zero waste patterning and it has rocked my world. I feel like I have too many patterns, but I can't really stop. I just found a 1940's pattern and it was 50 cents, but man California heat is hard on pattern covers!
It’s weird to say but I have pattern envy. Mostly because all your patterns are for you and you make them for yourself. I mostly make things for others and have a list of things I would like to make for myself that I never get to. Right now I’m watching acorn tv a bunch of someone’s got me started on it. I’m also trying to finish a knitting project for my grandson he’s going to be 7 next week! Time sure flys
When I grow up I want to be just like you. So far all I can do is make simple patterns. :)
I've had much the same luck you do with Truly Victorian patterns and their sizing, though I always have to shorten the skirts a ton. However, I have a friend who is the same size I am that has to use the pattern adjustments to accommodate her narrow shoulders and back while her front is a straight standard cut size. I also love that Victorian Laughing Moon corset, the hip spring/waist/ bust ratio is just right for my body shape without pinching or gaping anywhere and I can cut it in a standard size and only do minor tweaks for it to fit perfectly.
I love the extra mile you took for the thumbnail photo. You look like the queen of patterns or maybe this is the pose of you in a happy little day dream. The joys of organizing - absolute "YAY!" for packing tape over labels (whether printed or hand-written). I'm so envious of the amount of patterns you have, but at least you have them and use them.
What am I doing now - well, I'm on the 4th day of modifying a spur-of-the-moment housecoat/banyan/long-bedjacket made from a 1970's floral king-sized bed sheet. I just got the bug on Tuesday and totally winged it. I measured (badly, if I'm honest), cut, sewed, then ripped, re-fit/pieced, re-sewed (repeat the last 3 steps 4 times for too tight underarms, added full-length "shawl" collar, belt and forgotten pockets) - I'm now on the (hopefully last 2 fixing stages - fitting/hand-sewing in a patch for the neckline (cutting straight up the centre front and then adding a collar just doesn't look right, so I modified it according to Burnley and Trowbridge's bedjacket vlog #2) and then patching and sewing the collar then hand sewing the other half of the collar down the inside. It all sounds complicated, but it's not.
Yes, packing tape or the kind of adhesive-backed plastic library books are often covered with is absolutely necessary to hold those labels fixed to the box. I use a different model of Dymo label maker at work, and those labels don’t stick very well to most surfaces, so I always cover them with plastic. The only surface I can think of that they stick (almost too) well to is the painted metal shelves.
@@ragnkja I found they stick to paper quite well, too. We used them to make labels for backstock storage when I worked at Victoria's Secret and we used a label maker to label paper labels that went into the pockets on the bins and flats.

I think that I actually got palpitations at how many beautiful patterns that you have, Noelle! I really enjoyed going through your pattern list, and I can't thank you enough for writing all this down and sharing it! I don't have many patterns, and I love seeing what other people have because it gives me ideas of what I would like to purchase in the future.
This whilst attempting to sleep this morning at around 4am... I did successfully fall asleep, so now I’m watching to actually see what you were talking about, we were arguing about what to put in the bins or which bins were which 😂
I use manila envelopes to keep my patterns and then I write notes all over the front about sizing and changes I've made, also if it's self drafted or from a historical reference I cite the source on the envelope (like the nerd that I am). I also like to slide a piece of cardboard or laminated paper with a label between categories, like you would with files or recipes, so I can tell were a section starts.
That fast forward pattern sorting at the beginning was giving me such "blackjack dealer in Vegas" vibes... One for you? Hit? Stay? One for you... LOL. I loved seeing all your patterns and how you organized them. Walmart sells these great Sterilite brand boxes that are approx. 15x9x10 in. They work great for those who have primarily have Big-Four pattern envelopes. But I can't find a link to them on line--they always do seem to have them in store, though.

I also triple label boxes! I have moved so often in my life and I was tired of the moment of carrying a box or looking at a box and not seeing the label.
I really enjoyed watching your timelapse sort as I put laundry away. Being productive together felt quite comforting.

Thank you so much this video was very helpful. I only really knew abut Truly Victorian and Black Snail Patterns so now I have a lot of new places to search for cool stuff. Also I kept swooning over the Hogwarts Express overskirt in the background, the more I see it the more I love how it looks! I don't know if anybody has said it before but IKEA has some great storage boxes, I use them for all my old school books and my fabric stash is right now flowing out of one ikea box so I have to get a bigger one. What I like about them: The top is flat and they fit perfectly under my bed. They come in different sizes (I usualy use A4) and because the top is flat you can stack them on top of each other (and if empty you can take of the lid and put them into each other). What I dislike: The sides are a little tilted in, so books and other stuff that are slightly over A4 can't go to the very bottom because that is the smallest part so you have to figure out an order for the stuff you want to put in. I also have to admit I underestimated the number of your patterns and was a little overwhelmed about your thumbnail. I only started sewing this year and I was bothered about my patterns being everywhere in the room so I started organizing them in a binder. Seeing your collection I'm pretty sure the space in the binder will not last long. I would love to have a huge collection but alas space is very limited so I'll have to make wise decisions... or as wise as I'm able to ;). I definitely dropped a bunch on money on stays and corset patterns from red threaded because of you....Do I blame you for my depleted bank account or my lack of self control? I’m going with my lack of self control 😂😂.
I have SOOOOOOO many big four patterns because I worked at a fabric store and would get them for cheap when I first started sewing. Now I’m getting more from Indie sellers.

I think the 1918 styles of dresses with light, straight layered skirts will suit my stout 5'0" figure nicely. So now I just have find patterns and what would have worn underneath. I'm well trained from watching so many of you! ❤
The laughing moon corset pattern was highly recommended to me from a historical costume maker and I absolutely love it also. It fits me wonderfully.
That was definitely my kind of thing, I do like every thing where I can find it and in envelopes and boxes and shelves, my workroom is more like a shop. Jason from England 🤓

I love organizing. It's one of my favorite parts of paper crafting and sewing. I put a label on the underside/bottom of my containers so if it goes on a shelf over my head I can just pull it forward a little to see what's in the container.
Organizing my patterns is at the top of my priority list when I get done with Halloween craziness and this was super helpful!
Lol trying to watch while my son keeps interrupting every other minute (last week of remote learning before he’s back to school) and I’m just amazed at the number of patterns. I’m more the person who traces the pattern and then folds it back up and returns the uncut original into its sleeve. And that way I keep all the different sizes and can manipulate the copy as much as I like. (It’s been years since I’ve used a pattern as it came). Most of my store brought patterns are in a small tub in order by company and number. And I have a file in the cloud with a list of patterns I want that I strike thru the ones I already have so I don’t accidentally reorder the same pattern. 😉 it’s also organised by brand and number.
The struggle is real, I want him just to concentrate so I can have a tiny bit of peace and I’m still not fully awake 😅😅😅
I got a phone call from Amazon Drygoods about the LaMode Bagatelle pattern. She asked if I was taking a class because she got about 10 orders for that pattern over the weekend and only had one on hand. I told her you recommended it and we listen to Noelle.

I've watched this before, but today I find myself looking for great pattern storage ideas and I'm back...exactly 1 year later! Sewing room reorganization must be an October thing.
So saisfying to watch the time lapses of piles of patters go into other piles of patterns.
I am mending and altering things right now, until I can decide what to sew next.
I have 500+ patterns so I gave up on the multiple bins a while ago and switched to 1 big filing cabinet.

Big same. I am *hard* on stuff in general, so I have gotten to where I hardly even use tissue paper patterns anymore, but when I do, I trace my size onto butcher paper and carry on from there.
I helped in one of my kids' classrooms when they were younger, one day the teacher had me packaging various tools so each student would have a bag, she had my use a hole punch and just punch a hole in the bottom corner of the bag so the air would naturally come out.
This was so incredibly calming to watch. Takeaway: I need a label maker lol.

I am so excited about this! That Instagram pattern was epic. I am really looking for a better pattern organization for myself living in a tiny house. It's a struggle I think no matter how large or small your space is. I bet Staples would have some that are like document storage boxes that would work too. I know Ikea has some cardboard boxes that work great for magazine storage that would work if you don't have a moisture issue. A great way to vent pattern bags is to use a hole punch.
Staples has some great document storage boxes that are reasonably priced. We use them at work for overflow. I keep meaning to pick up one for my own pattern storage.
Hurrey... I am so happy: you said you are a „Godzilla rampaging“ in the sawing room? My room also looks most of the time just like that! But finally I am not alone in this! I keep my patterns in a beautiful old credenza a neighbor of mine gave me. I have often thought about how the world is in need of proper pattern cabinets. My mother gave me a slew of her old patterns, and that out did my credenza. I sort by tops, bottoms, etc. but within that, I also arrange them according to yardage. 11 yarders in the front, 1 yarders in the back, the view with the most yardage determines where in the stack they land. This was oddly satisfying to watch. Stay well!

It really is, it has three big deep drawers and two side cupboards. It stores a load of stuff and looks so tidy! Now if I could just get everything else picked up.
I thought my husband and I had a lot of patterns at about 30, hehe. I have yet to use many of them, but I can dream. I'm just getting into using patterns, so we have been slowly finding and compiling patterns we like for our cosplay and other needs. 😄❤

we built a shelving unit for the patterns we have and use clear bins for the mock ups. I just got a couple of books: Fashion in costume 1200 - 1980 in a local 2nd hand bookstore. Also bought Fashion the whole story on Amazon marketplace after shipping it cost just under $10. the last one is really fun starts about 500 and goes up to almost present day.
You could probably do a video on your favorite sewing patterns and limit it down to like your most favorite pattern in each category. 🤷🏻♀️

When I was looking at Simplicity patterns on their website, a lot of their Historical patterns can be specially printed for you! They're expensive as heck but I admit I was tempted to get that nightgown as well just because.

It is a bummer when you find the perfect storage containers for you stuff. Then you need more, you find out they discontinued them. 😠 Very annoying .

Every time you call us kids in a video, it makes me giggle. It's cute, though you're only 2 years older than me.
Working on test knitting a cowl and started a vintage/retro dress that got interrupted by the knit. I was going to sew it to wear for Thanksgiving which is somewhat up in the air right now but getting close!

I love those magazine containers and am glad you use them for this because I was thinking about getting some more of them, when can find, for pattern use. Nice to see someone else cleaning, organizing and culling. I need to do the same!

In the UK the one store I've found for very good clip-on plastic box storage solutions in the NORTHERN UK is Staples. They carry almost the full line of "Really Useful" clip-lid boxes, but they aren't cheap (but they're worth it in my experience and Staples does have regular sales.) but if you're looking for cheaper solutions, there's WIlko's and Pound-Stretcher (especially if they're combined with the Pet Hut - they then get bigger stores, so more room for storage containers).
Big yes to the Really Useful boxes. Mine are 5 years old now and have moved country and been bashed lots, and are still in great shape.

Fun! I store my patterns in file cabinets sorted by era. I'm currently making Fig Leaf Patterns 223 Spencer with Drawstring Front and Fitted Back. You kept me company while I was felling the back seams. :-)
What am I doing? Well I've got the organizing bug happening here too. But I have 3 rooms to organize, a Bead studio (which also doubles as my day job office), the sewing studio which is the smallest room in the house, and a guest room which has all my fabrics and patterns strewn all over the guest bed, floor, desk, dresser. Thanks for the kick in the butt to get myself motivated. What am I listening too? Just finished (audible) Biography of George Lucas. Loved it. Now starting on a Ken Follet's Evening and Morning, set in 997ce, this one is 24 hours long. I love long historical books especially Ken Follet, he researches every detail. Also like James Michener for the same reason, loved his Alaska book.

I love organising! I just finished organising my art room (large cupboard really lol) have you thought about using file dividers or just card to seperate the different types of patterns you have to put in the same box? Maybethats me being ott 😂 I have to have everything easily accessable or I forget what I have or don't want to use it, I love watching your videos, they're a nice break 🙂

I should probably feel bad about this, but I used to buy all the big three patterns back when they'd be 99¢ at Joann's on labor day and such.... so I have over 100 patterns I've never used... Oops! 😆
But now that I'm buying indy patterns I'm far more selective, and I'm truly trying to only buy what I'm currently in the middle of working on.... It's so tempting to buy them all tho! 😂

Remind him that some people have more. I do though it a larger verity because I have kids to adult and a ridiculous amount of time periods for all. When my son was doing anime I would haunt the thrift shops looking for the right lines as a base then modify to the characters. I also still have all the patterns I made for the kids who are now adults. Which worked out when my son told grandson that I had made Pokémon hats for them as kids. So I’m now making for the next generation

Huzzah! I have finally succeeded at binge watching your whole channel! I was thinking through this whole video "wow, so many patterns, so jealous" and then I looked at the info on my PDF Patterns file on my computer... 2,071 items... thank goodness it's all digital.

And, since I live in SE Asia, I've been filling spare time scouring the internet for ALL the free clothing patterns since I can't buy off the rack here. Been making myself a whole new wardrobe. Thanks for sharing your patterns. It can be hard to find actual historical patterns and not costumes. For skirts I'm willing to draft them but not the tops.

I've only got about a dozen patterns Laughing moon and reconstructing history. The only 2 places I've found that go plus size 32 + or close to without a lot of adjustments.
Just starting on my more recent historical journey. More recent than 10th C :) Starting with Regency as it seems the easiest . Already mocking up a short corset, bust gussets are interesting things lol. Thank you for making up LMM #115 . That really helped me to see how things went together. I'm doing the non-corded version. Fingers crossed.
Would of loved to do Victorian but long skirts and electric wheelchairs are very much enemies. Regency is easier to shorten :)
I best get back to sewing/mocking up. I have 2 months before the Whitby Goth Weekend here in england and have 5 items to make .
Hi Noelle! I finally finished sewing in the bazillion eyelets on my Stroop Augusta stays and got the boning in. Basting together and trying on is next! I'm still reading The Starless Sea. I'm only reading it before bedtime, so I'm not reading much before I'm falling asleep. I'm going to start reading it more other times as I'm really enjoying it. Thanks for the pattern talk!

I think I have a total of like 4 maybe 5 patterns 2 are pdf but I’ve started making a list of patterns I want and it’s gotten quite long. I think PDF is going to be my main source because I just don’t have storage space for patterns but man having all of those things you could make would be amazing.
