    FAQS
    →How old are you? - 25
    →How long have you been writing? - Since I was 8
    →Where do you live? - I keep that private for safety reasons, but I grew up in Vancouver.
    →Where did you go to university and what did you study? - I keep my university information private, but I majored in writing with a concentration in fiction.
    →What are your pronouns? - They/them or she/her
    →Where can I read your books? - None of my books are published yet, but you can read my published short fiction in my linktree (linked above!)
    →So when will your book be published? - I don’t know! I’m in the revision process right now, but I can’t predict exactly when I’ll have a book published. But I’m working on it!
    →Do you plan to traditionally publish or self publish? - Traditionally publish
    →Will you read my book/story/chapter/mentor me? - Unfortunately I cannot accommodate these requests because editing/critiquing is a labour intensive task that I can’t afford to do for free alongside my job, my own writing, and running this platform. I really admire that you can write short stories, because any time I try to write anything "short" it comes out at 50k words. Good video, was a joy to watch!
    Also, speaking of tier ranking your first lines, I think it would be interesting to see you rank your last lines. For me I have a million first lines, but not many last lines because I never finish anything lol.

      The last couple of paragraphs in a story, and the last line, are crucial to everything that has gone before. Obvious enough but hard to achieve.
      The story closure in Shaelin's stories gave me that sense of revelation which I found in Richard Ford's collection Rock Springs - way back !

Now that I think about it, I think the reason I rated it a little lower was because I didn't actually spend much time on it overall (really, just a couple days of work total), but that's just because it all fit together so easily! My four favorite stories of yours are Hold Me Under Till I See the Light (not only is it amazingly written, but it’s helped me process some of my feelings after leaving a conservative evangelical church as a teen), I Will Never Tell You This (it is SO complex and I love it), Tabula Rasa (I don’t know what to say except that it’s amazing), and Daughter of a King (that first line hits HARD).

    Not to worry, the least of my priorities is to provoke any butthurt. I've had the privilege of reading 5 of your stories (because those are the 5 where the links actually worked), and whenever I didn't like a particular story, it was because the content didn't click with my personal taste. You as an author are great.
    Because you admit to a subjective ranking, I get to have a fun time as a viewer seeing what the you of 2022 finds relatable in your own work. "I Will Never Tell You This" getting into the higher tiers first comes as no shock, because it did come across as expressive of VERY deep and personal emotions. In contrast to that, "Wishbone" and "Solarium" came across as a low-key exploration of ideas and flexing of writing muscles. If it were objective, "Solarium" could've received more generosity.
    But you and I are in agreement when it comes to "Cherry & Jane in the Garden of Eden". I legit fell in love with short stories again because of that one, and when my film company gets off the ground, you or your agent will hear from me about buying the film rights for as much as you think you deserve (not a nickel lower) because there's SO MANY cinematic things about it.
    "Zugzwang" and others you wrote afterward are still so fresh ... 2 years old at the most ... that I get the sense you'll feel differently with some time passage.

      @@ShaelinWrites In the 10 minutes since posting the comment I've double-checked, and I have managed to get links for "Hold Me Under Till I See the Light" and "Tabula Rasa" to work, so I'll read those next.
      The main issue I have ("Barefoot" and "Beautiful Animal" are the prime examples) is that instead of linking me to the story, publications like the Fiddlehead and Room will only provide a purchase page for the entire issue in question. Some sites stick a crude paywall up with severely limited resources for context. Until my own artistic works can generate personal income, it's safer on my wallet in these instances to just wait for "Pareidolia" to be published.

    Wait, we're not allowed to share opinions that you may not like? TH-cam is a public platform, we can have whatever opinions we want and share them in the comments. The entire point of a video like this to share our thoughts and talking about contrasting opinions is fun. If you don't want that, then you shouldn't be a TH-camr or a writer. I'm not being mean, I'm just telling the truth. You should always take the constructive criticism and ignore the rest. Don't tell your audience to not engage with your work, especially when you make a video all about opinions about your work.
    I'd cut that beginning part out if you can, it doesn't present you in a good light.

    • @ShaelinWrites
      @ShaelinWrites  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I never said people weren’t ‘allowed’ to engage with my work or weren’t allowed to share their opinions. You are allowed to do whatever you want. I made a request that people not leave their critiques of my work here in the comments section of my video, and since most of my viewers respect me, they understand that request and don’t take it in bad faith, like you have.
      It is considered bad etiquette in the writing community to share negative reviews with authors directly, but some people aren’t aware of that, so I reiterated it here. People can have whatever feelings they want on my work, and I said that, I just kindly asked that people not share their critiques here on my platform where I cannot choose when or if I want to read those reviews, unlike on a reviewing platform meant for readers. Obviously if you are an artist you will receive criticism, but that doesn’t mean you aren't allowed to state your wishes regarding your own content, which up until you, no one has had a problem with on this video.
      Yes youtube is a public platform where people can say whatever they want, but this is also my channel and as the creator I am also free to make requests regarding how I want the community here to interact with my content. If people don’t want to respect that, then they simply won’t respect my request as it’s not the law by any means and no one is enforcing it, it was just a request. Or they don’t have to watch my videos.

    • @punisher5558
      @punisher5558 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To add to what Shaelin has said, I find it strange that your comment frames this as "she can't take criticism". She's studied writing at university and now has a literary agent. It's extremely dismissive to say that she is a stranger to criticism. It dismisses all those workshops, and critique partners and submission critiques etc.
      We have no idea the amount of work she does with critiques, but based with these facts (university and literary agent) we can assume it's a lot. So, once again, it's really dismissive, dare I say patronising or condescending, to suggest that she can't take criticism.
      As for why Shaelin does not want critiques in her comment section, I think that's self explanatory, and she's explained it well herself. Nothing wrong with readers making videos critiquing work, writing reviews on review sites etc. Commenting critiques on an authors youtube channel is a completely different thing, and it makes sense that not all authors would be comfortable with that.
      It's not that they can't handle critiques, but I believe that authors have the right to seek out critiques, not for the critiques to seek them unsolicited. That's the beauty of having review spaces, and an author's comment section shouldn't be a review space if they don't want it to be.

    A mysterious cleft in a limestone cliff, extending miles deep into the subterranean planet, is the place to hide Bad Stories.
    We are sorry to inform you that none of your stories qualify for the Cave Category. Even your juvenilia is embarrassingly Good (i.e. talking trees).
    You are that freakish thing. A writer. Like the angelus bell you summon the faithful to prayer but must remain forever outside. The good writer's fate.

      My words are not intended to mock. I take the artist's role to be religious as Joyce did in his portrait of Stephen Dedalus.
      A reproduction of The Angelus by Jean-Francois Millet hangs in my study. See Wikipedia: The Angelus, Millet.
