Gotta love total boat. I was more than happy to buy, use and showcase their products in my videos before they sent me a box of supplies, merch and an affiliate link. Now they have a loyal customer for the long haul.
Isn't it wonderful having manufacturers interested in DIY project videos and then contacting you with offers of things that they feel you could use to make the project that much easier but complete? Total Boat really stepped up with the care package, along with allowing you to post discount codes for other DIYers. Have they asked for scenes of this video to use in their advertising? That is the first thing I thought after they sent all the useful items because if it were my business, I would have asked for permission to use parts of your video to show other builders how easy the necessary fillers are to use.
I found your channel eons ago when I was curious about pouring keels. No particular reason, just surfing. Years later I'm still watching lol. Cheers and I'm glad you two are still having a good time!
Yay another shill for the completely annoying epoxy company. I have in the spirit of fairness done a couple of projects on land and sea with the stuff. It is just epoxy, repackaged, overpriced and overhyped epoxy. The companies media saturation is repellent ant at this point . Also there is no way a chandlery in Rhode Island knows more than the Gougeon Brothers. The built boats and taught sailing particularly to the grandson of the head of Dow chemical. The brother worked with Dow to bring epoxy from the military to the civilian market . So who do you think knows better and can sell it cheaper? Dow with 60+ years of research and development , or the people that sell rope and bolts in Jamestown.
A much easier way to finish off any product like this is to use the back of a used caulking tube. You can squeeze it for the desired radius. The contacted edges squeegee up the excess as the radiused edge cuts the desired curve. All left over product is pushed into the back of the tube. You can just scoop out the product and re-apply. Works for so many applications. Glad to see your building again. I would go crazy going that long without something to build. Enjoy
That is looking really good. I have built several small boats with 1/4 in. plywood but always screwed together not stitch & glue. You are making that look really easy. Keep up the great work!
Looking fantastic and enjoying your build. Kudos to Total Boat. Love their Thixo Flex, easy and accurate to apply. I use it on my wooden boat projects with great success.
Depending where you are, but I imagine for anyone building boats professionally, that Thixo combined with a powered caulking gun would be such a time saver the time saved would more than compensate for the cost per tube. for a hobbyist builder it'll depend how how much the time saving is worth to you. Great video as always 👍
Remember with the Thixo, rather than waste an applicator tube when you have just a small job you can just pump a small amount direct from the tube and mix by hand.
Looks great, I got here early this time. Gotta comment here about that Poor pool table, I see you putting stuff on it & I cringe like as if you ran your nails down a chalk board- Ouch! But that’s gonna be one awesome ding. For 10 ft. She kinda looks a bit like small, but she’s gonna be cozy for you guys See you next week, won’t be long till paint 🇨🇦Cdn. Dave
I used the Total Boat Top Side Paint on my CLC Passagemaker dingy build and have been extremely disappointed. Even in Florida heat I had to wait 2 days for it to cure enough to sand between coats. Coverage is poor and difficult to brush, even using their brushing thinner. Finally now that I am using the boat durability is ok, but not what I would expect vs. the cost. I think I would have been better off using a exterior house paint. When I re-paint the whole dingy in a couple of years I will use a 2 part PU and not worry about the cost. Hopefully you will have better luck!
Hey guys you are always making or fixing or breaking things on a boat so anything that makes the job easier or faster is a bonus. With that said, I make my own thickened epoxy. My mix is epoxy + fine pumice powder. No real formula, just mix it in until it is as thick as I need. I buy the pumice powder that folks use to make the French polish setup for finishing furniture (I think they use it for that) anyway it is a Mohawk product and available on amazon and not expensive. The thickened epoxy that results is smooth without bumps or chunks that can occur when using sawdust. I mostly use it for bedding knife blades when making hidden tang knives or wherever I need a putty-like epoxy. It is easy to work with and sands but it abrasive on sharp tools it trying to cut the hardened product because of the silica particles. Give it a test and see if you like it.
Any special reason for such large fillets? Is it easier to fibre glass? Or also for structural/seal joints? How do the two products used, kick off in the exposed sun?
Fillets do several things. They provide a lot more surface area for the glue joint. They improve the mechanical leverage, and they help the fibreglass cloth fit into the corner. They are also very useful when you need to cover up joints that don't fit perfectly!
for filleting, you must use CABOSIL thickened epoxy, wood flour is fine to fill a dent or fairing, but for strength CABOSIL FIBER IS ESSENTIAL FOR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND FOR BLACK BOTTOMS USE GRAPHITE POWDER MIXED WITH MARINE EPOXY.
O no just started watching and i had a much better idea to smooth out the excess....with out any of the mess ...dam sorry for that!!! But ok back to the vid
Ruth, please don’t call it a show. As a follower from almost day one it is a following along, as if I know you both for years now. Start calling it a show makes it, I don’t know, sound so television like!
I don’t know if this is a cry for help but don’t bother with a bright finish for anything!! It isn’t worth your energy! You’ve said to since even the beginning of Big Red, “workboat finish!” Even A2A just painted their beautifully made tender after it was getting beat up. Save some sanity and just paint it.
Total Boat is hitting it out of the park these days with their support for small builders. Really happy to see them reaching out and giving a hand.
It's also good business. For a few bucks' worth of product you can get favorable advertising, if your product performs like Total Boat's products do.
Gotta love total boat. I was more than happy to buy, use and showcase their products in my videos before they sent me a box of supplies, merch and an affiliate link. Now they have a loyal customer for the long haul.
@@SavingMaverick55 Good product plus costomer service is rare today. Total boat is in this for the long haul, judging by the way they operate.
We are so happy you are enjoying Thixo for this build! The fillets are looking great 🙌🙌
Thanks guys!
Thanks for supporting Salt & Tar!!
I wish we had you in the UK!

Lil’ Red is looking great! Might think about hiding an air tag tracker on her. It would be depressing if this one gets stolen!
Little Red is coming along, love that Thixo by Total Boat!
There is definitely a spark in Garrets eye that wr have not seen in a while! Thanks for sharing!
Lil' Red is going to be such a great addition to your adventures! Can't wait to see her floating in the Bahamas, and Garret is drinking a margarita!
Great Video....Total Boat Is an Outstanding Company! Top quality and a wonderful staff for support and info

Glad you got that Total Boat sponsorship! I know very little about boat building but I do know Total Boat has any and all epoxies a person would need.
Its really coming along Looking good!!!!!
Kudos to Total Boat for stepping up to the plate
I have always been curious about stitch and glue projects. Thank you for providing a step-by-step video presentation. You took away the mystery!
Your craftsmanship and attention to detail is astounding! Bravo...
Looks great! Well done Total Boat!
Building your new dinghy has been exciting watching you guys put it together. Love it. Great work.
thanks for the great content and accompanying music.
Big! Bold! Bow! Looking good there! Kudos to Total Boat for your goodie boxes! Look forward to the photo shoot next to Red!
Total Boat…..i won’t forget the name……makes me feel really good for you guys….your just good people, and good people reached out to you!
That is looking really good. I have built several small boats with 1/4 in. plywood but always screwed together not stitch & glue. You are making that look really easy. Keep up the great work!
Love your content.
Yes, Total Boat has been amazing with the products and a lot of TH-cam creators.
Keep up the great work
Thanks so much!!
👍🏼😎🙏🏼

Thixo is costly...however, it's a real time saver AND it is consistent! 🎉
that was a good tip to point glue the planks with the leftover epoxy from the filets ... thanks for great videos
TotalBoat is incredible stuff!
Looking fantastic and enjoying your build. Kudos to Total Boat. Love their Thixo Flex, easy and accurate to apply. I use it on my wooden boat projects with great success.
Gotta watch how convenient you make things.!!! 😂😂
Love it so much keep it up as always 💘
What a Task?
Red Fillits, is that a name?
It might be red with top board black…
Great job 👏👍
Cool. Looks like a great little boat!
Hats off to Total Boat!
Ryobi battery powered caulk gun. $70 well spent :D
Proper job - as they say in Cornwall!!
Another great video... I can't wait until next weeks episode...
Good job. Lots of patience is involved in the whole process.
Some people even use the poxy tube's without mixer tip on flat board and just stirring it up. That way not destroying a mixing tip for small job.
Remember with the Thixo, rather than waste an applicator tube when you have just a small job you can just pump a small amount direct from the tube and mix by hand.
I wish I'd used Thixo on my project, but the pastry bags worked too. I think Thixo is easier to get a consistent bead.
Looks great, I got here early this time.

Great sales job! I'm convinced.
Good show great sound track

When epoxy was a relatively new thing, we called it shipwright in a drum.
Nice job , great idea to have some varnished wood for accents . gunna be a sweet dingy !
It looks like a rewarding project. 😄
@ 14:40 , where did that fancy boat come from? It looks very nice.
Shame total boat doesn't have an outlet in the UK. Lots of projects going on there stuck with west/Wessex as only option!
A cordless caulking gun would've been a life saver ;) You guys are great. It's coming along nicely :)
Cheers to Total Boat. AWESOME :)
Good job
Quite a beautiful little boat.
Would have love a tube when I built my kayak because some areas were hard to reach.
Poke that caulk Tube Lots of Times it Comes out MUCH EASIER YOUR Dingy is Looking Smooth Sailing.
I don’t even need a boat but this has me interested in building one.
Looking good!
Sweet
Great job 😊
We'll have to start calling Garrett Sir Thix-o-lot.
The budget pro version:
Use a piping bag with thickened epoxy.
Much cheaper, more precise and easier on your hands.
You guys are doing a great job on Little Red, but you are making a mess of your Dad's pool table, he must be a very patient and forgiving father.
Never been this early before :-)
More views of Ruth please
JIM ❤
Pretty lines
Rent a caulking gun? Love the episodes on the build.
You guys are awsome, such perfectionnist! Would renting a gun for the day be an option?
Superb !
How much of Thixowood 2.0 was enough for making fillets on your boat?
That's going to be a sweet tender.
👍👍👍
The other missing tool is the cordless Mastick gun Globe do a a cool one
LUV-UN-IT

The electric gun is no good left on the boat. I'd have bought another one. Easy to sell on afterwards to another boatie or gift it to your Dad.
:) for the TH-cam algorithm.
Looks like peanut butter.
Where’s Swab? Is he still with us or is he in doggy heaven? Hope all is well. Love the dinghy.Chris from Western Australia.
Swab was getting a bit old for boat life, and is living with family. He's appeared in a few videos and seems happy in his retirement.
Is the land between each plank epoxied . I though I saw light through some of them ?
I expect those joints will all be covered in fibreglass.
Will 'Little Red' have a 'Beaching Keel'?
Use a plastic Squeegie and Dip it in Soapy Water B4 You Squeegie your putty it will Amaze You
Please dad, get a cover for your table.
It's been awhile since i *felt* such a cringe!
👍👍👍👍✌
did you say you use flour to thicken epoxy?
Wood flour. Think sanding dust or fine sawdust.
never use paint thinner before epoxy
🤠👍
😀😀👍👍❤❤
\m/
where's the Dewalt electric chalking gun:)
13:51 ake mushrooms.
Ruth, will you NEVER learn to put the Clamp right side around (8.00)?!? Sheesh (now, what is the rule of thumb for the rest of us mortals to follow?)
for filleting, you must use CABOSIL thickened epoxy, wood flour is fine to fill a dent or fairing, but for strength CABOSIL FIBER IS ESSENTIAL FOR STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND FOR BLACK BOTTOMS USE GRAPHITE POWDER MIXED WITH MARINE EPOXY.
O no just started watching and i had a much better idea to smooth out the excess....with out any of the mess ...dam sorry for that!!! But ok back to the vid
Masking tape next time might have helped
wood filler....never heard. gotta look this up? why? bahaaa
Garrett, hey man they just gave you a huge product gift, and you're telling your viewers it's expensive. Not so good PR my friend.
😀
