I built a Point Comfort 18, a Chesapeake deadrise, over three winters. There is NOTHING as satisfying as driving a boat that you have built. Everyone asks 'how can you build something so complex?' The same way you eat an elephant.... one bite at a time.

Excellent video. I think it’s gorgeous. You did a great job Jason. I love the name too Verna Louise. That alone shows your strength and vulnerability. I can tell you I won’t be calling my Ash Tree and trash tree anymore. Way to go. I was “glued” from part 1 to part 4. I could watch it again! Keep up the excellent videos. I learned so much. Thank you!! 🚣‍♀️🛶🚤⚓️🦋🥃🥂.

A colloid is simply a solid that fully suspends in a liquid and doesn't separate again without the aid of a catalyst. I really good example of a colloidal material is milk. Milk is mostly water followed by whey proteins then followed by all the stuff good for you like butter fat, calcium for bone growth, and suspended vitamins. The butter fat remains suspended in the liquid due to homogenization, but it doesn't come out again. So colloidal silica is just thickener that won't separate from the epoxy before it dries.

I wasn't familiar with this style of boat, without a keel. Makes sense for fishing on a river though, much easier to maneuver without the current impacting you as much.
    Thanks for sharing the process!

Excellent project. I really like all the little thoughtful things you do to take this to a very usable design. All the latches, the gas shock, the levelers for the door supports and the latches for holding the doors in place. I’m likely to build one of these. Thanks!!

I had a Crenshaw; here is a couple of things with wooden drift boats to keep in mind. If you use spar varnish, cracking will require maintenance, we used epoxy paint for the exterior but the raw wood gave its beauty. Another problem is the boot, plywood which normally is used can catch on a pointy rock. We tried a lexar boot which was slick but tended to sag between screw holes.

If it had a Skeg it would steer a lot better, also, with a skeg, you could, if you wanted to, you could have a small dipping lug sail for days when you’re down river and wind was right, you could sail back home. Of course, you would need a rudder too. Well done Sir, beautiful!

Built a paddlewheel rig that is powered by a bicycle. Drops into the canoe and makes it go go. One day I'll build a fancy looking boat like this. Nice job!

I have a question that may stike you as odd, but here goes,.
I loved watching this craft being built it was a real pleasure. However, everything aent as normal until you put it into the water, and did something i have never seen before, that being you sat facing forward when rowing is usually done with your back to the bow of the boat.
The only place i have seen done the other way round was in Malta were they stand and row looking
forward, i wonder why this is, being a small boat the idear being you can apply more leverage when pulling on an ore???
