Abel! Thanks so much for inviting me to be part of this. Definitely exceeded expectations in every way. This was so well put together and it was super nostalgic reliving all of those great Mario kart DS accomplishments. Really engaging, amazing job with this, it really highlights how amazing what MKDasher has done in general is, and really conveys all the emotions behind all of it so so well. Thank you so much for making this
For a documentary about arranged lines of codes to almost made me tear up. It was a wonderful 80 minutes spent. Everything compiled is very insightful and I hope a sub to you and mkdasher is enough as a payment for this surreal experience. I couldn't imagine the time and coordination needed to do all of this and it made me realize that I'm still scratching the surface of the mario kart community. Once again I wholeheartedly give my gratitude for making this. My personal favorite part of this is definietly the Shroom Ridge clip with the very well timed drop from Nuclear Fusion.
I am glad beyond words to see that this video exists. I was a frequenter of the competitive scene for a few years and seeing this in my recommended brought an enormous wave of nostalgia, excitement, appreciation, and joy. You and all contributors did a service to the community by making this, that will stand as long as the legacy of mkdasher himself. Hoping that it reaches a deservingly big audience!
Man, I get an indescribable amount of nostalgia from watching this video. I think I remember playing MKDS around the late 2000s-ish with school mates when you could bring your own toy to school for one day a year (I forget the name), but haven't touched it in a long time. This is really making me wish I was into time trialling back then, so I could be a part of something so exciting. Regardless, I can tell this was a highly informed and researched video, and I really get a sense of how monumental some of these records were to set from the guest speakers to the editing and music choices. Thank you for making such an excellent video.
Holy shit, how did I miss this? This makes me SO nostalgic! I was one of the best active players in Germany back around 2007/8 (under the name exoskelett) and I remember many of the people in this video. MKDS actually opened up a whole new world to me. I started going to in-person tournaments in 2006 and met so many people there, some of which are among my best friends to this day. I also remember that, I think in 2008, TB1 joined our event in Germany, and it was mind-blowing how none of the best German players at that time had a chance against him. I maybe won a couple of tracks against him over the whole event. He was such a nice and modest guy though! We had a great time back then. This video was extremely well made, and I actually learned so many new things about this game that came after I stopped playing. Thanks a lot for this MKDS documentary, something I had never expected to be made!
MKDasher is one of the people that got me into speedrunning in general via his MKDS WRs and MKWii TASes. It makes me so happy that he's finally being recognized as the pillar of speedrunning he is. And with an amazing documentary too! This is just great! For anyone who doesn't really know his channel, I strongly urge you to go check it out, as I write this comment he uploaded THREE world records over the last three days, so the story is not even close to over yet. But also go check out his older videos, he has some of the most iconic MKWii TASes, a legendary SM64DS glitch TAS, a bunch of Pokemon TASes of all things, A PIANO COVER OF THE MARIO 64 TAS and more. Guy is just a legend of speedrunning.
Thank you very much for all the time and effort you put into making this masterpiece. It brought back a lot of memories from the 3 or 4 years of my life that I dedicated to playing MKDS. Outstanding work. Great to see that the top players from that era wanted to contribute to this video too.
Cheers, Abel! I love to see justice given to this wonderful community and the player we've all been dropping our jaws at for years. I remember being so amazed by TB1, Sascha, Ben, Rupa, yourself, and many others. David is just on another level. Thank you for documenting this.
re-watched this video again after being recommended the Summoning Salt video and i really appreciate the community and dedication behind my favorite childhood game
Yooo! I see my name at minute 10:28, I feel represented! Thanks for making this video that undoubtedly will become an important piece in the history of our game. Cheers!
I was looking so closely whether my name would be included anywhere in the video, but I didn't see it. 😂 Guess I'm too far down on the Player's Page by now, and that picture of the German tournament must have been one of the few that I didn't attend. 😅
Okay, this is seriously the best Mario Kart video on TH-cam, at least that I have seen. Especially love the cinematic views of the tracks, the testimonials from fellow MKDS players, and the music used when replaying some of Dasher's runs. Very few flaws production wise too, which is incredible for a video over 80 minutes long. You very clearly cared immensely about this project and took all the time necessary to make it great. Can't wait to see what else you have in store in the future.
Abel, amazing job man, this is incredible work! I got chills at one point lol. MKDasher is the man! Him achieving RR times that I dreamt of was so cool to see. But then he continued on to absolutely crush what I thought possible, in new and creative ways, it was such a joy to watch and one of my favorite mkds memories.
one of the best mario kart videos out there. i knew mkdasher was good but i had no idea just how consistently incredible he was at developing the mkds scene. great job abel!
I used to play and talk with David i the past and I can say he deserved to reach that level. I played MKDS during all my childhood but I could have never imagined a community like this has been built. This documentary reminded me of the good old days where I used to talk with my friends about TB1 records and more. Amazing production. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this video and obviously, David, thank you. Thank you for being part of this community and making it grow.
Wow. This is probably one of, if not the best video on TH-cam. Thank you so much to Abel and everyone else for putting so much time and effort on this project. It was fun to learn about Dasher's greatness and the pacing of the video was really good. Again, thank you so much.
I just got done watching this documentary over the span of a few days, and oh my gosh, this is one of the best documentaries over Mario Kart ever. The intro, the music, MKDasher’s times, the interviews, everything! Lots of research, time, and effort has been put into this video and it shows. I’d love to see more. Gotta love that ending. The foreshadowing of Tagia. 👀
Oh, hello Nuclear Fusion remix on Shroom Ridge! That's an excellent choice of music. Doll Judgement as well, I can't believe that an excellent documentary like this would also give me such great tracks to listen to!
Amazing. amazing use of music, amazing use of cinematography, amazing use of tension, amazing sense of progression, amazing storytelling, Amazing Everything. This is really good.
Simply an amazing video, and I'm expecting this video to blow up in views and likes in the next couple weeks. The amount of heart and soul put into the editing and script is nothing short of excellent. It also warmed my heart to see all these legendary players, old and new, with the rich history and memories that they presented. With all the talented class act players we have across all Mario Kart communities, the Mario Kart franchise will live on forever. MKDasher is a once in a generation player.
Might I recommend the following short video on Taiga: th-cam.com/video/3a-ybkAcc74/w-d-xo.html Whilst it's not anything near feature-length like MKDS 2021, it is an EXCELLENT watch.
Just finished rewatching this for the first time since the premiere and I just gotta say this was brilliant Abel! It’s a brilliant tribute to Dashers’s incredible contributions to this game
In addition to all mkdasher's achievements detailed in this wonderful video, let's not forget that he has also created the software allowing to record high quality runs and even made a nice tutorial recently ! Congrats mkdsabel for this masterpiece !
I really appreciate all of the effort that went into this journey of a video. It's amazing to see how so many people are still invested into one of the first games that I personally owned and played in my childhood. Thank you and everyone that made this video possible
I grew up with MKDS, and while I didn't know it at the time, it was my favorite MK game of all time. All around good vibes. This video was able to capture my nostalgia for the title and I really appreciate this. Very nice video... I love your editing style
48:29 off topic, but for those who don’t follow Super Mario Bros speedrunning, Kukie (who’s now called LeKukie) is now a respected player in the top 5 who is close to setting a major milestone for the individual level human sum of best for the any% run that would tie it with the no l+r tas. Honestly kind of ironic that he once cheated with a tas, and now he could be the one to finish the job and tie these runners with the perfect tas. When he cheated in MKDS he was a dumb teenager who made a mistake
Outstanding documentary! MKDS is one of my favourite childhood games, yet I was never aware of its competitive scene until this video and I couldn't find it more thrilling. So beautiful to see how all members of the community have kind words to mkdasher. They all profess inmense love towards MK, and it's so inspiring to see how "simply a videogame" can mean SO MUCH for someone to the point of being one of your building blocks in your life. Regarding the documentary itself, incredible production, footage, edition, narrative and great music choice! You are very talented! This months work deserves huge recognition.
It says a lot about a video this long, about a game I dont play, for me to have watched the entire video. Really, really well put together video abel, great work!!
Super good content abel, I really appreciated the whole thing, it was very well made and with good music choices. It was also a good thing to see many players interviewed. Great job, great work and I look forward to the next video!
Having watched the video several times now, I have to say that the Choco Mountain bit is by far my favorite part of the video. The pacing and the excitement builds up nicely and represents the craziness of those 28 days. While not being a part of the speedrunning community myself, I always had a soft spot for MKDS and I'm so glad that runners like Mkdasher keep bringing attention to the game.
Thank you for your comment. I had a lot of fun editing the Choco Mountain segment, and I am glad that others listed it as one of their favourite bits for the whole thing.
Oh my god, what a great video, thank you so much for making this. A video I didn't know I needed but I'm very glad I got, your time spent making this has been much appreciated
Been following the mkds wr scene for years. Didn't expect something like this. Hands down, this was great entertainment and a relict for the gaming scene. Thanks a lot to the producer.
Thank you so much Abel! This is truly excellent! It was totally worth it. I was worried if I was too late but you did a perfect job in using NOBUO's comments. 😄 It was entertaining to know how the competitive scenes evolved as an MKDS player.
It wouldn't have been possible without your amazing help in the background, I am truly grateful for that! By the way, I am hoping to provide Japanese subtitles in the future so a Japanese audience can give it a watch.
Mario kart Ds was my first childhood game but until this video I never knew it was so competitive went off topic this video is really good and felt relaxing exciting to watch
It’s really magical to see a video on mkdasher and seeing all of these other huge Mario kart channels in the comments showing their love for this WR champion
Just discovered this video and mkdasher certainly has proven to be a legend in the MKDS community. Love the documentary style and the unique PoV on the time trial runs playing in the background. Also the orchestral Mario Kart and Touhou music playing was very pleasing and symbolic to listen for each major track. The other tunes were very good too.
When I heard the Nuclear Fusion arrange during the shroom ridge section, I instantly subscribed. Touhou music is an addiction for me. And weirdly enough. Mario Kart got me into it. Maple Treeway Olympics was the one video that got me interested in the music. Weird how it comes full circle watching this today
Hi I'm french and I really enjoyed this documentary which gave me a new way to be interested in Mario Kart DS. Today I still see this game as a patience to all tests and I would really like to congratulate MK Dasher for his performance. From now on, I will watch his videos to see him improve. I am a person who loves Mario Kart and frankly I had never been too interested in Mario Kart DS even if I loved this game. For some time, I wanted to get serious about the game, to train myself to be always better but I also doubted and seeing this video I realized how much I had to persevere to make my place among the greats. This video has been one of the most interresting that I've seen, even if I have difficulties in English.
Holy shit. This video was so absurdly well produced, has to be one of my favorite TH-cam videos of all time despite me having not touched Mario Kart DS for over a decade.
Watched the whole premiere, and I must say I really love the insight the other players provided and the story that was told. The camera shots and the production quality as well is just... phenomenal, to say the least. Major props to the people who worked on this project! From one MK player to another, this is just simply amazing :)
This video is absolutely incredible, insanely good work from all involved and it almost makes me want to play MKDS again, if not grind harder at my current games, beautiful documentary

Great documentary. I main mkw currently, but mkds is my first mk and my childhood. Very glad to witness the effort put into these runs. Snake snake snake 🐍
Holy shit, this is an amazing video. This did not feel like a video from a small youtuber but a full documentary from a proper production company, the story writing the interviews and the editing was all absolutely superb. I especially liked the Rainbow Road reveal. The only piece of criticism that I can even think of is your voice. I think you need to exaggerate it more. If I'm honest I don't really have any tips on how to do that, I guess pitching it up and speaking louder would help. Apart from your voice I cant think of anything else, not even nit picks. Incredible!
Thanks for the comment! And you're totally right, I thought the only thing I had slight doubts about going into the release was the narration. I'm happy someone pointed it out because I'm looking forward to improving on it for future content.
Amazing work Abel, this is absolutely brilliant. The production feels totally professional and it will surely go down as one of the best kart documentaries of all time!
as someone who grew up with the MK community and still plays MKWii to this day this is an amazing documentary that highlights everything that is so great about the series--the community, the innovation, the high level of competition, etc. i hope this thing gets the respect it deserves. on a personal level i'm also really happy to hear from NOBUO again. good stuff!
I have a lot of good memories with my childhood friend playing this game, speedrunning is an amazing craft to dedicate countless hours of perseverance into and this video really highlights that. Amazing work. Can't wait to buy this game again and dive into the time trials scene. Would love to see more MKDS videos and maybe even other MK games like Double Dash.
Honestly one of the best documentaries I have ever watched in my life. This was my first Mario Kart I owned and as much as I never speedran the game or even call myself a speedrunner, I still find it so incredible how much just one video game can touch so many people. thank you so much abel! and to everyone else who worked helped with this video it was amazing :D
Very well edited, nice work! Loved the commentary from old names/MKDS legends, especially guys like Unreal who transitioned to MKW.
Really engaging, amazing job with this, it really highlights how amazing what MKDasher has done in general is, and really conveys all the emotions behind all of it so so well. Thank you so much for making this
Here from SummoningSalt. Decided to check this video out to learn more about this person and MKDS. Fascinating video Abel.
Me too
I can't believe this video only has 68k views right now... one of the best videos I've ever watched on TH-cam... Please algorithm push this out!
Thank you!
I just can't imagine how many hours went into creating this documentary, amazing video
It brought back memories! We had so much fun online aswell. I'm glad to see this game is still played. Thank you for this
For a documentary about arranged lines of codes to almost made me tear up.
Same, the timing on that music to the track was great! Really fits the situation
Hoping that it reaches a deservingly big audience!
this is unreasonably good. I didnt even realise I had watched over an hour until the credits came on. Seriously good job!
Great video. I had only heard of MKDasher through the 120 star TAS in 2012, had no clue he was such an MKDS monster
1:12:17 "Hey man, got any drinks?"
"I have a whole cabinet of alcohol!"
"Oh, what kind?"
"Isopropyl."
A very pleasant surprise to see players such as yourself showing up after all this time!
Amazing work Abel - so glad to have been a part of it and I hope that this really gives the scene a boost.
Cheers!
Your Wi-Fi videos from back in the day were a blast to watch as a 13-year old. Fantastic to see you again and thank you for the lovely comment!
Amazing video! So thankful NMeade recommended this :)
one of the best mario kart videos out there. i knew mkdasher was good but i had no idea just how consistently incredible he was at developing the mkds scene. great job abel!
You ever watch a video that's so good you can't bring yourself to watch another one? That was this video.
I hope we get such an amazing documentary for taiga one day too
Might I recommend the following short video on Taiga: th-cam.com/video/3a-ybkAcc74/w-d-xo.html
Whilst it's not anything near feature-length like MKDS 2021, it is an EXCELLENT watch.
Appreciate it, thank you!
Nice job on the documentary! It's my favorite ds game.
When he cheated in MKDS he was a dumb teenager who made a mistake
damn this video was so well put together and edited, love all the camera angles on the tracks and stuff. Good work
Outstanding documentary!
Amazing video! And I really like when you conclude it with the question: "Does he eclipse the rest? Or is there an another?" with Taiga's best time!
incredible production, just awestruck at how well put together everything is
It says a lot about a video this long, about a game I dont play, for me to have watched the entire video. Really, really well put together video abel, great work!!
Super good content abel, I really appreciated the whole thing, it was very well made and with good music choices. It was also a good thing to see many players interviewed. Great job, great work and I look forward to the next video!
Thank you so much, Louis!
Bravo. Bravo! This is indeed the best Mario Kart DS or any Mario Kart video I have ever seen
My man, you just created a MASTERPIECE of a video
I enjoyed every single second of it. One of the biggest treasures in the community
11/10
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Been following the mkds wr scene for years. Didn't expect something like this. Hands down, this was great entertainment and a relict for the gaming scene. Thanks a lot to the producer.
This has also to be the best thing mk related I have seen in a long time keep up the amazing work
Thank you so much Abel!
Everyone: What a great documentary/Wow! He's so good!
Me: **worried about his thumbs**
Mario kart Ds was my first childhood game but until this video I never knew it was so competitive went off topic this video is really good and felt relaxing exciting to watch
It’s really magical to see a video on mkdasher and seeing all of these other huge Mario kart channels in the comments showing their love for this WR champion
the quality of this is pretty outstanding great video mate
This is a certified hood classic
Thanks, Shrek
Thanks, Shrek
Thanks, Shrek
Thanks, Shrek
No, shut up
So DAMN pumped about this!!!
This might be the absolute best mariokart and even Nintendo documentory ever
This video is absolutely incredible, insanely good work from all involved and it almost makes me want to play MKDS again, if not grind harder at my current games, beautiful documentary
I just need the soundtrack man
In the back of my mind i was like "aight touhou's gotta be in here somewhere" then bam 32:35
Edit: thanks so much for actually putting it in the end of the vid
Great documentary. I main mkw currently, but mkds is my first mk and my childhood. Very glad to witness the effort put into these runs. Snake snake snake 🐍
I watched this when it came out but still, idk how it doesn’t have millions of views
This was wonderful way to capture this story by the players who were present competing. If there is a sequel, I am all for it
Thank you for your kind words! There will eventually be a sequel in the future with Taiga's story.
Hope the algo really picks this video up. Amazingly well made!
I am so pleased to hear a legend such as yourself enjoyed it! Hope all is well. :)
Been passively watching him for like 8 years this is surreal, awesome video
This is my new favorite video
Just rewatched this masterpiece... I don't understand why this video has gone so much under the radar, it really needs more appreciation
Man, that was a legit documentary. Beginning to end - great stuff.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Excellent production. Be proud!
as someone who grew up with the MK community and still plays MKWii to this day this is an amazing documentary that highlights everything that is so great about the series--the community, the innovation, the high level of competition, etc. i hope this thing gets the respect it deserves. on a personal level i'm also really happy to hear from NOBUO again. good stuff!
What was your username back then?
@@mkdsabel I went by jxcxb_sxnsxx on the forums. I was like second only to finn in terms of longest average post. I wrote on there A LOT
Thanks so much for watching! I really appreciate it.
Honestly one of the best documentaries I have ever watched in my life. This was my first Mario Kart I owned and as much as I never speedran the game or even call myself a speedrunner, I still find it so incredible how much just one video game can touch so many people. It truly is what gaming is all about.
This is absolutely insane, hopefully this will be for Mario Kart DS what the melee documentary is for that community!
Looks like this will become your most popular video on your channel, you deserve it after all the effort you put in this video.
