I don't have a "pond -pond" like you have, I use a 110 gal stock tank
with a storage tote for my filter system (outside) the pond & to be
honest I break mine all down cause we live in Indiana & not too
sure if my filter system would survive the winter season so to be
on the safe side I take my goldfish indoors for the winter.

How can the waterfall keep going if you took the pump out?

At one point I decided to leave my pump in during the winter. Problem was ice built up around the waterfall and started diverting water around the liner.
I shut my pump off after that so it wouldn't run dry. Now I shut my waterfall off as soon as the snow starts to fly.

Once your fish start slowing down they don't need to eat. I have heard that if you feed your fish when its cold, their metabolism is so slow that the food will actually rot inside them. No one wants that!

Wrong feed fish, cut back the amount and change over to a wheatgerm with garlic in them, no keep pump running, keep filter running you will kill all that matured bacteria in the filter
