Giant hogweed can grow to almost 6m in ideal climates (19ft) but is more commonly seen in the UK standing at around 4m (13ft) It has a thick hollow bright green stem with dark red or purple spots/streaks and coarse spiny hairs which are more prominent at the leaf sheaths. The leaves are broad, deeply lobed and serrated, and can reach a massive 1.5m (5ft) in width.
Large umbrella shaped heads of flowers appear in late spring to mid summer and can grow up to 1m across, with up to 50 clusters of tiny white, 5 petalled flowers.

Been telling people this for years. It always surprises me that councils allow it to grow around areas where children, families and dog walkers inhabit. One would think they would have a special task force in each council to tackle this plant.

@@jessicasinclair323 I’ve worked with specialist teams that eradicate giant hog weed unfortunately as with most councils I don’t think they prioritise the eradication because as usual it’s cost luckily I don’t think they are very prolific I’ve not seen one for years

@@mattgoodchild8215 good to know that there are specialist teams at work on it. Unfortunately here in Staffordshire it is rife. There are literally thousands of them blocking walking trails through many greenspaces making it virtually impossible to enjoy for half the year. Sadly, I think it'll take the horrific injuries sustained from this plant on someone's child for anything to be done about them

Contact your local council too, they're technically supposed to remove it for safety reasons, but even just putting up warning signs or taping it off can help stop people and pets getting hurt

Giant Hogweedcontains a high concentration of several potent linear furanocoumarins, including psoralen, bergapten, and xanthotoxin. These compounds are responsible for the plant's severe phototoxic reactions, leading to intense skin burns, blisters, and long term sensitivity to sunlight - in some cases this can last for many years!
Furanocoumarins are produced by many plants in the Apiacea (carrot family) as a defense mechanism against predators such as insects and mammals, but the severity of reactions to Giant hogweed sap is primarily due to the high levels and potency of the linear furanocoumarins, which cause more damage compared to other plants that might contain lower concentrations / less potent types of furanocoumarins.
