American Speaks Fluent Mandarin Shocks Chinese Immigrants in TOKYO: Making Japanese and Chinese Food

  • Mixing China and Japan is a part of daily life for the 770,000 Chinese immigrants in Japan. From food, to language, to friends, we are constantly mixing the two countries and seeing more and more how much they have in common. Today I went to a local Chinese supermarket in Tokyo Japan and spoke Mandarin. It shocked the store owners. I also reviewed some Japanese snacks and cooked dumplings with my roommates... with some difficulty.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

The odds of meeting someone in a foreign city who's from the other side of the world, speaks your native language fluently and has also been to your hometown.
Those two gents should buy a lottery ticket!

That's right. Although... I lived in several cities n China and they all had big populations, so the chances of running into someone from a place I lived is pretty high. lol

My failure at cooking shows that if you don’t put effort into something, you won’t get much out. Hard work is essential to language learning. How bad do you want it? How much time are you willing to put into it? Can you take criticism? Can you make mistakes and not get discouraged and give up? These factors will determine your success with learning a foreign language. -Anming

I really enjoy your videos. I'm bad at cooking and you're right I don't put any effort to learn and my mom is so good at it, I think that, for today, my Japanese lessons can wait and I should go downstairs and help my mom and grandma with the cooking. D:! The last time I overcooked the rice xD

You can try making omelette rice. I think it is easier to make than dumplings. Crack 3 eggs, whisk then cook omelette in butter and some milk. For the fried rice, use chicken strips, scallions, green onions, soy sauce. It's was tough to learn cooking at first but I got interested in doing it after watching Masterchef. A passive recipe (like you just throw everything chopped up in a pot) you can try is chicken soup: whole chicken, ginger, vegetables of your choice, salt and soy sauce. Bring up to boil and turn down to low heat to let it simmer for 50 min.

I too thought I wasn't good at learning but after a while I learnt two things that help. 1. Repetition-no joke. Do it until you go insane. I've listened to the same individual podcast episodes 30x minimum for example. 2. (The most important) It's not about the time it takes to learn, its about just learning. Focus on the 'doing' not the 'have done by'.

Haha yes, that was something I realized too. In my country we don´t talk to a stranger without a reason and for example wouldn´t suddenly start talking about how hard it is to find the store or that´s it´s the first time for me visiting it XD
I like to travel around, so I know it´s a culture thing but I am still always so surprised if people in other countries would suddenly talk to me without any reason at all. Asking a stranger for directions etc. is no problem at all, but making a conversation just for the sake of it is something no one in my country does, at least I never witnessed it.
Watching her just going for it so easily is a strange mix of mesmerizing, motivating and strange for me, haha.
And I have to laugh at the TV-show (drama???) that was playing next to them in the shop XD

Thanks so much! I saw from TH-cam stats that people in HK watching my videos didn't seem very interested lol (short watch time). I guess it would help if I learned Cantonese. I would like to go to HK and make a video, but I don't know Cantonese. I wonder if local people would be a little disappointed if I spoke to them in Mandarin. My instinct tells me that they might not be too happy.

You are most welcome to come to my hometown and I would be more than happy to share my experience about Chinese, Japanese and American culture with you LOL.
I was in States for half a year before when I was under professional training. I also went to stay in different places in Japan for half a month as exchange student before when I studied in University. That may be the reason I enjoy watching your video so much.
No worries about speaking Cantonese. Most of the young in HK could talk with you in Mandarin.
Thanks again for your good work.

You know why I've become a fan of your channel? Unlike other vloggers, you don't spend every episode in a restaurant talking about food. It's far more slice of life. This is how to discuss food, making it with locals. What's going to happen when the quarantine is lifted? I prefer your Japanese content, will that come to an end?

    • @OrientalPearl
      @OrientalPearl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There was a gap in Japanese content because of the coronavirus, but now that restrictions are being lifted worldwide, I feel more freedom to interact with my neighbors and post Japanese videos. I made a new Japanese video and it will be posted very soon.

I thought the title was clickbait, but your Mandarin is legit on point, from pronunciation to vocabulary. Pronunciation is usually the hardest to get right and you've really nailed it. You sound more native than a lot of Chinese-Americans, lol.

The real question is what does カルピス taste of lol. My mum is always fussy about trying new things and was asking what it is when I was going to get her a drink. I couldn't even describe the taste except for "it's refreshing". I guess it's like a flat cream soda but that doesn't even describe it perfectly.
