      You're right, being able to strike up a conversation is fun and rewarding. Very worth it. The thing I would caution is to be psychologically strong enough to handle rejection. I think that unless you're prepared to deal with it, at least initially, there's real pain associated with rejection, and you must prepare to take a hit on your self-esteem w/o letting it damage you. You certainly seem to have succeeded in that aspect!

      You should learn Esperanto! I thought I was bad at learning languages until I learned Esperanto, and now I'm almost fluent. Even if you don't care about becoming fluent, it can help you prepare to learn other languages more easily. Think of it as a recorder; you know, the instrument that´s often taught to children. It helps them understand basic underlying concepts of music theory and how to interact with music, right? The same can be said for Esperanto and language. Plus, it's based on mostly Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages, which means I can understand a large amount of vocabulary from those sources without having to learn them all from scratch. It's been amazing.

My advice is just like yours exactly! Don’t be shy or afraid to communicate at all. Every time I walk into any store I try my best to speak their language even with just a hello, thank you & goodbye. Practice makes progress. Anming, if I may, I have a suggestion for you. You know how you mentioned that TH-cam videos are longer than TikTok videos. Well if you have free time, like 15 more minutes a day, could you kindly extend your videos even more. Not for bloopers, but for reading out each conversation you had and breaking it down for us. Like sounding out the conversations word per word if you don’t mind. Explaining what it means. It would really help us practice and learn what we hear. This will make all your videos a combination of entertainment and educational language learning. Anming aka “A”dvanced “N”orturing M”otivational “I”nstructor “N”arrating “G”enerosity 💝

    • @OrientalPearl
      @OrientalPearl  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would like to, but I tried doing 15 minute videos and the audience simply would not watch more than 5-6 minutes. TH-camrs want to keep audience retention around 50% ideally. If I make a 10 minute video, people watch 5 minutes. If I make a 15 minute video, people still watch 5 minutes. It hurts the video's performance.

    Thank you so much for your videos. You have no idea how much they mean to me. I came from an extremely rural background in the US where my family and I were the only ones to speak a different language. My dad had traveled a lot when he was young and was really good at picking up languages. I found a fascination in languages as a child but found it hard to express. I took French in College and was very passionate in learning it but I lacked the self-esteem to practice it in public when I had the chance. In my small hometown, there is a small population that has been growing of African French speakers and Latino Spanish speakers. Over the years I’ve gotten better and my speaking skills in French and Spanish have increased beyond belief just by speaking in brief conversations. Seeing people light up when you converse to them in their language is one of the best feelings. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to share how much your videos impact my views and confidence in speaking languages. (I’m learning Japanese now. Hopefully I can practice in public when I get the opportunity.)

    Wow! Just...WOW!!! Both Chinese and Japanese???!!!
    You seem to be equally proficient in both, so much so, that you can help Japanese people with learning Chinese and able to help Chinese people with learning Japanese as second languages! I hope you pursue a career in education, obviously in language instruction! You've already have inspired me to perfect my Spanish and to go on to learn German next!
    You've learned the best kept "secret" of language learning; don't be afraid of making mistakes and cast aside your timidity. When I first met my wife (who is from Ecuador) she spoke no English. NONE! I knew just the raw basics of Spanish but I needed badly to improve. Well, we both seeking to learn, so I attempted to teach her English. Her pronunciation was so bad, I swore that she'd NEVER learn. Turns out, I had no patience and I was just a terrible teacher!
    She began practicing (actually SPEAKING) every day. Fending off smirks and laughter at her mistakes, but advancing until 2 and 1/2 years later she had virtually no problems making herself understood anywhere. :)
    A common trait among her detractors was that they only spoke ONE language and that one poorly!
    Meanwhile, she continues to improve her English while the English proficiency of those insensitive clowns who smirked at her, remain STAGNANT! It's all because she doesn't have any fear!
    It only took myself about 30 years to learn Spanish because of my timidity and fear of making mistakes. Most of my advances came because my wife broke-down complicated Spanish into simplified Spanish for me.
    You're 100% correct about abandoning one's apprehensions about making errors when learning another language. LOSE YOUR FEAR!
    ¡PIERDE TU MEIDO!

    It's funny, I have the same mentality as you: what's the worst that can happen, ignore you? My native language is Spanish, grew up learning English in elementary school, and then took Italian in high school. Then I studied German on my own. I used my Italian in Italy every single time I traveled there. No one knew I wasn't Italian lol. They are always so excited and at first, they ask where I am from. When they hear that I speak Spanish just from studying they get even more excited, just like the Chinese people in your videos. Typically, they tell me how cute it is. They always use that word "cute"/"lindo". Hahaha. People usually just really appreciate that a foreigner to their language and culture has an interest. You. Are. Awesome!!! When I left Japan, the number one thing I told people who were interested in the language was to make mistakes and not be afraid!! It took me several months before I could really say anything when I was in Japan because I was so afraid of insulting someone or embarrassing myself. Thank you so much for being such an incredible example of that!! The people in my class who really made it were like that too! They just loved using the language no matter how well they did and they quickly got over mistakes. I was so much more cautious. I haven't finished this video yet (had to stop and comment), but I wonder if you will share any tips on how you got to the point where you just did care if you made a mistake? How did you overcome the fear of rejection and the awkwardness of saying things wrong? I think we find this to be true in our native language too!!

    As you would know, Japanese don't generally strike up conversations with strangers, they very much keep to themselves - as opposed to being in China, or even Australia where I'm from where it's a rather common thing to talk to anyone. Your videos have me wondering, do you ever get "rejected" (for a lack of a better word), ignored, cold stares, WTF looks, "what are you trying to sell me?" etc. when you approach people? The willingness of the Chinese ppl doesn't surprise me at all, but surely the Japanese ppl must be taken aback? In fact, I'm generally very wary of the motives behind strangers approaches and if I didn't know who you were I would most likely say "no thanks" and walk away. I wonder if the camera makes them even more hesitant, or does that somehow actually make some people let their guard down ?

    • @OrientalPearl
      @OrientalPearl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1
