Getting into pc gaming in 99 was awesome, we were getting the new wave of tech and the graphics for games started to come into their own. The music and overall attitude of everything was pretty on par to our liking. Everyone was still anxious and dreaming about what could be in the near future. Im glad i was just becoming a teenager in 99.
I think this era truly encapsulates and embodies the organic and creative growth of the internet and gaming. It was a time of discovery and enthusiasm. I used to bring this game to school on a flash drive and share it among other kids. we'd sometimes have 16 player matches in the computer lab. this was 2012-2014 my junior and senior years... good times.
The old good days right. It's crazy to me that 2014 was 10 years ago. Completely insane. Thanks for sharing that memory. Please subscribe, there's others dnB mixes on the channel! 👾
I used to play World of Warcraft with Michiel Van Den Bos, producer of Foregone Destruction. I kind of knew what he did for a living, but didn't really think much of it when he said that he wrote music for games, thinking the stuff he wrote was for small indie games, that no one had ever heard of. During the time we played, we discovered we had a mutual love of LTJ Bukem, and general mid 90's electronic music (Underworld, etc), and during raids would discuss what albums we'd have playing in the background saying "Now playing: Logical Progression Vol. 2", have long conversations about what we liked about the "intelligent DnB" sound, and he intro'd me to a whole bunch of other DnB mix albums that I'd not heard of before (names escape me now, but I'll post them back here now if I remember of find them on my CD shelves). We had a guild meet up one weekend out in the Netherlands back in ~2005 ish, and we were having a conversation about how we got into DnB. I said to him "ahh yea, well this game Unreal Tournament that I played when I first started working back in 97 or 98. There was this one track played on the Facing Worlds map that I just fell in love with. It was so chilled and relaxed for DnB, which is sort of the sound I was looking for, but hadn't found for ages. Then I discovered Bukem after a few years when I stumbled on the game again, and reignited my search for the chilled out DnB sound." He says (with a grin on his face): "That was one of my tracks... All the DnB sounding ones on UT were mine, and Alex did the more rocky sounding ones... I took loads of inspiration from Bukem during the making of those tracks... Thats so awesome that a track I wrote got you into DnB because I know how much you love it". Alex, being Alexander Brandon. He was telling me about writing the music for Deus Ex, some other games music he was working on at the time, some remixes of Underworld tracks he'd won some competitions with. The rest of the weekend was very much of a blur due to heavy drinking pretty much the whole time 😂
Wow, what a fantastic story! Thank you so much for sharing that experience with us. No doubt, its soundtrack is legendary and has secured its place in history. What stands out to me most about that period is the creativity and inventiveness of DJs and sound nerds who mixed and drew influence in such an organic, almost handcrafted way. Everything was new, sometimes you'd hear a track once and never find it again. The recording methods were different, making each creation truly unique. I think everything good, nostalgic, and sophisticated in DnB was captured by Van Den Bos!
Facing Worlds will forever be a map that is cemented in my mind because of how many times i played that map and enjoyed every second of the music. Nothing brings me back to the good old days quite like seeing that map and the song that accompanied it. ❤

anemoia - n. nostalgia for a time you’ve never known Imagine stepping through the frame into a sepia-tinted haze, where you could sit on the side of the road and watch the locals passing by. Who lived and died before any of us arrived here, who sleep in some of the same houses we do, who look up at the same moon, who breathe the same air, feel the same blood in their veins-and live in a completely different world.

@@BootlegTerminatorhey i hope you have a good happy life..i used to feel quite lost, it helps a lot just to do even small things we love, and when we meet good people spend real time with them, then the good memories will come.. be kind to yourself! and i hope u find lots of cool things you love to do
@@CastleHassall Thanks. I guess I could say my situation is a bit better since I'm talking more to my friends and exams are stopping for now, but yeah, I'm still kinda lost at the moment. Sitting on my room all day not doing anything really special like playing games and watching YT vids, I did try getting into drawing, but I'm honestly thinking in quitting that
Crazy, I've listened to Foregone Destruction for 25 years and haven't noticed until now that the cymbal sound that start at 0:22 moves from the left to the right and back in a constant manner. I guess you can only notice it with headphones on.
100%. I believe to fully enjoy DnB, you gotta listen with headphones, no doubt. The quality and technical effort of these artists deserve that! Check my latest mix here as well: th-cam.com/video/u_Ld-SqUot0/w-d-xo.html
Sadly, today, everything boils down to profit, microtransactions, and the next release. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. This was my latest DnB mix, I think you'll dig it: th-cam.com/video/fY3DivnZ-LU/w-d-xo.html
Then I discovered Bukem after a few years when I stumbled on the game again, and reignited my search for the chilled out DnB sound."
He says (with a grin on his face): "That was one of my tracks...
I think the same thing, it's something eternal. Thanks for sharing this, I have other mixes on the channel too: th-cam.com/video/Uyu_KS7gKOI/w-d-xo.html

UT2k4 was my favorite. The custom maps and modifications was a game changer and the community was strongly connected as a result of that.
The single player/story mode was also ahead of its time.
