I remember crying and screaming during the sewer chase with that big Alligator, and I wanted to announce that today I'm going to face my traumatic experiences by playing through the remake. really? i remember being admittedly, a few years older than you, about 7 or 8, and playing this game backwards and forwards not being all that scared at all. this coming from a guy that grew up with an older brother in high school/college that loves horror movies and making me watch the chucky movies when i was even younger. i dunno, other than the jump scares that startle you, i didn't find this game scary at all. it's not scary. look up everywhere, jump scares are the cheapest tricks to "horror". having that said, RE2 Remake is a phenomenal game and i'm having a blast playing through it.

They have to reach a satisfying conclusion with a story left in limbo via every portable and side story for almost 10 years. I don't know if they can end on a note that doesn't feel a tad WTF. I'm hoping for it but, why couldn't this come out when I had more free time?! Though I wouldn't have the money to buy it...-_-
The original is a classic, it paved the way and was good for what it was, the Original will always be dear to my heart and I still will replay it from time to time, even knowing every line the characters say that's how much RE2 means to me also I missed you here Jake.
My copy has downloaded and I’m just waiting to play now. It seems like this remake is very special indeed. I’m excited In a way I haven’t been in a long time for a game. It’s the nostalgia. But it’s also the fact this is what resident evil was and it feels like it’s found it’s identity again. This is everything I wanted from the remake. It looks and sound absolutely superb.
I've never gotten into the R.E franchise but have been thinking about picking up the remasters since they look a little more my speed. I remember watching my friend play the OG R.E 2 a long time ago but I guess I never really understood the appeal of it. But this game LOOKS AMAZING! So I'm excited as hell to give it a go when it drops in a few days.
Started off on a claire hardcore run. Zombies are scaring the shit out of me. Kinda reminded me of how i felt playing the start of leons campaign on re6 before it turned into the action garbage. Heres to an re3 and outbreak in this engine!
Please, please, please! Let's get an outbreak series remade like this. That game was ahead of it's time, it would be perfect now with the easy access to the multiplayer.
who cares i agree its harder but you need to learn the new mechanics. I found a little annoying that any hit even from a G monsters baby thing would knock me into danger status. Running from lickers is literal suicide Shooting a zombie in the leg can cause a momentary stun making it easy to run past... this is before you disintegrate the limb I founds clares launchers rounds were weak against the birkin forms compared to shooting the eyes with pistol and machine gun rounds so use the launcher for lickers, G things in the sewer and the plant zombies.
Shot a zombie in the head four times on first play, well that's him dead. Get's back up as i'm just passing him, aahhhh!, ok zombies are harder to kill in this & I need to change my boxers.
As akward as it feels to say something like this about a modern Resident Evil title for me since the series has honestly let me down for a little over a decade I'm just going to go ahead and say it. Resident Evil 2 Remake imo is the best RE game ever made, and the first game to make my top 5 favorite games of all time since Fallout 3. Even though I liked 4, this is the game I was expecting 4 to be. It took them a while to finally get it down for some reason, but this is truly how you modernize the classic gameplay. I hope they continue to make more RE titles using this format because after seeing that they can do it, I refuse to play RE any other way from this point on.

I remember playing it for hours at a time at my friends house when I was a teen. Played the demo earlier today and immediately bought it after. I can't believe how fast 30 min went by.
I played resident evil 2 as a 13 yr old back in a time when gaming was in a golden age! Everything was new & amazing you had two great 32 bit consoles & 1 kick as 64 bit & so much to choose from. Today it's amazing if you get a solid bug free completed game without a 15GB patch or more paid content. Nothing will beat those memories of being young & playing this co-op style with my brother & cousin. Lets face it the #90s kicked @$$! This is a rare occasion of something old becoming new again! I love the remake & played the Claire campaign in a few sittings . If Resident 7 & 4 had a baby its Res 2 Remake. They should do Code Veronica or Nemesis in this format. Capcom well f'in done!!!!
Been waiting for this game since the RE1 remake, 17 years ago. Yeah, I'm old haha. I still thoroughly enjoy playing the original PS1 trilogy but it'll be really nice to have a modern take on one of the best game ever made.

Completed RE HD Remaster on Steam yesterday prior to the release of the game since i've never played any of the RE games, and I really want to jump back into it, but I have to wait until tomorrow to play RE2, since I preordered, really looking forward to it !

It's good. But they could have done a better job on the Dog AI. Deems worse then the original's dogs. And they were scripted and easy to avoid as well.
I am a huge resident evil fan and when I heard they were remaking this I was very happy and knew I was going to play it I pre ordered it got the deluxe edition and was fairly happy because I’m just not as much into games as I used to be and thought it was going to be so hard and I would eventually shut it off without beating but once I got home and downloaded the extra content and turned it on I realized it I didn’t get stuck 3 hours after playing I would of never shut it off the first night and who knew the second time I turned it on I was gonna beat it and say that is the best game I’ve ever played right there with goldeneye 64 if they remake 3 and code Veronica those will also be excellent games

Melty Boys It’s not trash. Your argument is trash and holds no evidence to what you’re saying. The RPD is graphically enhanced, the OTS is a welcomed return to form and the suspense and gore is still there. If you like the original so much then go and play it.
I played the one shot and was hooked and decided to pre-order. I played the original, and was selling it at the store I worked at at the time. The amazing thing about both the Res 1 and then Res 2 was the amount of people that would come in store and start talking and debating all of their problems and experiences with the game. This is what a game should be a thing that can inspire a conversation and get people to open up. This is why I think the idea of narrative and thought provoking game should be out there to inspire new generation of gamer to think and talk to other.
This game is awesome. I was just on time to pick it up in CA at 9pm yesterday. I work as a teacher and a student at the same time- so i can't play until I'm out of my classes for my masters tonight. Or maybe I'll just skip class... I had the same feeling of dread playing this game from when i first played it on my N64 in 1999.
I loved the game and I think this is EXACTLY what RE franchise needed. It’s a great game. However, it does have quite a few flaws. Identical boss battles and Capcom removed too much content from the original. If Remake of the first game did something, it actually ADDED more.
the thing i loved about this amazing remake is that it made me feel like that kid that played re2 for the 1st time again. It makes u fell nostalgic yet its fresh, while playing i never felt safe and always looked over my shoulder specially when Mr.X was around earing his footsteps outside while low on ammo and health items make u feel desperate and unsafe (actual fear heheheheh). Those stickers were commonplace with some games and PSM who regularly put stickers in their magazine for your memory cards. It was the easiest way to know what was on what. Good times. I still have my guide for this from the PS1, I wonder how well it lines up?

reminds me when I was playing the evil within I beated a boss and puzzle were I was stuck for a day then I door an elevator got out and I fell though the floor endlessly I thought It was going to respawn me back outside the elevator but instead my game crashed and my data got corrupt I sold the game the next day

Resident Evil 2 is one of the GREATEST horror game OF ALL TIME it shaped the survival horror or any zombie games in general. RE2 being back in this generation is fucking amazing modern gamers need to taste this! Excited for the full release.
It has always been my favorite resident evil. Even then i liked it more than the first game. This was the first zombie game that made me feel like i was in those oldschool romero movies.
My favorite thing so far is there's like no introduction to any of the enemies. Like Mr. X is just there, at least in Leon's scenario. Birkin just drops in on you for a boss fight. If you've never played any of these games before and you were playing this, you'd be like "wtf?! Who is this big tall monster!? Why is he chasing me!?" It's so great. And then having to lose X so you can go search the rooms you haven't searched yet, but you have to be fast because he will come find you. Edit: I also love how detailed everything is. like in the original RE2, it was hard to tell what room you were in. Or what everything was supposed to look like. And I totally get it was a PS1 game so it didn't have that kind of detail, but it's so fucking cool seeing it now. It's nostalgic. I'm so amped for RE: NEMESIS!!!

Oh man, downloading it now, can't wait to play it. I still remember playing it back in the days so many times that I could run the entire game with eyes closed. My favorite is still Code Veronica, I hope they eventually do a remake of that.
Can’t wait to play it but personally still a teensy bit disappointed that they did go in the direction like they did in the re1 REmake where they kept the fixed camera angles and gameplay but added a plethora of new mechanics, areas, puzzles, enemies, story bits, etc
I got to agree with you that as this remake has done and has cleaned up a lot. There are those little pieces that have ecos of the past game. They really did flesh out the interactions with Leon and Clair and the others. I remember when the original came out and I bought it and yeah now that I am in my 40's its great seeing a really well done remake of it. Capcom seems to have pulled this off and done things right. So few Dev's have put this much effort into things like this remake.
I’m not normally great with horror games as I tend to start them and chicken out (sorry outlast 2). But last year I played resi 7 and alien isolation and actually completed them. I loved the gameplay of resi 7 so I can’t wait to start playing this remake. Still a bit of a newcomer to the series as it’s my 2nd resi game. Love your work here and on gameranx Jake!

Was a bit hesitant of this "overhaul" of one of my favourite games of all time. This is RE2 with the same game mechanics as RE4 (which is great IMO). It just works and this is how you make a remake, thumbs up!

I love Resident Evil, RE2 was my first. I recently had a discussion with my cousin about RE2 he had asked if I bought the game and I said yes, he then told me I heard the game is only 7-8 hours, I told him play time doesn't matter to me replayability does and for me Resident Evil has it, and that I will always play them until it has nothing left to offer.
I didn't really like the Mr. X constant threat mechanic. It just frustrated the hell out of me in the end, I started the game on Standard difficulty but when Mr. X showed up I found myself dying so often that the game started to ask me if I wanted to lower the difficulty and I eventually caved. I was constantly running from one side of the station to the other only to find he'd be showing up what felt like maybe a minute later at the most. It also had me so preoccupied trying to out run him that I kept stumbling into Zombies and lickers.
MrX was amazing, when i was doing Claire B i run into the armory to try to circle him around there but he gto in, did not see me, and went away. i could her him opening the ofice door and checking inside for me. eventualy i noticed he does not hear u if u walk, so u can lure him to one side of the building, then walk back and he stays there looking for u, this gives u more time to go do the puzzles and pickup stuff without he chasing me like in my Leon A which i though was a permanent persuit
"Leon and Claire interact more than once" Are you sure? Because I remember in the classic they spoke in police car, RPD hallway, STARS room, other times via walky talky, Umbrella lab when Claire asks leon to get Sherry. Now, they speak at the car, fire escape, and the lab where they say "Woah! you're here too?? Escape without me!".. I think they ruined their interactions.
Now if Capcom can implement a 1st camera since it's based on RE7 Engine and some how work a fixed camera as well then this would be the ultimate experience. If only.
Just finished my first playthrough with Leon this game is the resident evil I've been waiting for since 4. The way you feel on edge having so little resources with Mr.x behind you making you feel like you need to figure things out now or you're dead. I had no ammo left when I fought William in the final fight I ended up literally killing him with a knife and I felt like such a badass.. amazing ass game.
As someone who never played the original, I fucking love this. I bought it the day it released, and it consumed me until I beat the first playthrough of Leon. I'm saving my Claire run until I've beaten a few other games on my list because I want it to stay new and not let the tension die down. But it was absolutely amazing. Resident Evil is a series that I play when I want to feel, basically, frustrated for fun. My friends and I jokingly call it Anxiety Simulator 3. Lol. Alien Isolation being Anxiety Simulator and RE7 being Anxiety Simulator 2. RE2 is an amazing looking game, and you're very right, you do feel more and more fucked as you play. You play for those moments where you're low on health and ammo, you cannot find any herbs, and you round a new corner hoping to find a safe room or some heals...just to find 2 lickers. Those are the best moments, ESPECIALLY when you actually make it through and you feel this relief rush over you. It's not cheesy at all like the old games were, but this is a good thing. It's done in such a smart way. Also, even as someone who never played the original 3 RE games, I still know a lot about them and was able to see so many ways this paid homage to them. Honestly, this game felt like the new RE4. RE4 was perfect, it was flawless from start to finish. I thought another survival horror game would never live up to those standards, but RE2 does. It's another Leon adventure, who is my favorite character, and it's even more terrifying than RE4 was. In RE4 there were these quiet moments that showed us a bit of beauty and peace in the area. A nice sunset, some soft music, a few items littered about. RE2 doesn't have these, and as a die hard tension fan, it is better for it. Everywhere looks disgusting. Even the safe areas feel dangerous, you know there are enemies waiting for you just outside of it, and while the music is calm, it is nowhere near inviting. It's twisted in a way. Absolute 10/10, look forward to playing again.
I just keep thinking this game is a masterpiece and I can’t find a better word. It’s everything we grew up with in survival horror.... that wonderful game play loop of key, map, shoot, key, save, puzzle, etc .... but more well done than basically any game we’ve seen like it. I think it stands shoulder to shoulder with the best in the genre. What it really makes you long for is the unrealized Silent Hills game by Kojima because graphically... we don’t get a lot of survival horror games this AAA and this pure. It’s AMAZING that this game exists in the ultra high quality state that it does. Capcom rocks.
As unlikely as it may be I really hope by some miracle Konami takes note of the success of this remake and somehow manages to make a quality remake of Silent Hill 2

As akward as it feels to say something like this about a modern Resident Evil title for me since the series has honestly let me down for a little over a decade I'm just going to go ahead and say it.
Resident Evil 2 Remake imo is the best RE game ever made, and the first game to make my top 5 favorite games of all time since Fallout 3. Even though I liked 4, this is the game I was expecting 4 to be. It took them a while to finally get it down for some reason, but this is truly how you modernize the classic gameplay. I hope they continue to make more RE titles using this format because after seeing that they can do it, I refuse to play RE any other way from this point on.
So when I turned the lights on in the dark room and the old safe room music played I had my first true nerdgasm in years.
Who's ready for them to announce a REmake of Nemesis?

I remember playing it for hours at a time at my friends house when I was a teen. Played the demo earlier today and immediately bought it after. I can't believe how fast 30 min went by.
I played resident evil 2 as a 13 yr old back in a time when gaming was in a golden age! Everything was new & amazing you had two great 32 bit consoles & 1 kick as 64 bit & so much to choose from. Today it's amazing if you get a solid bug free completed game without a 15GB patch or more paid content. Nothing will beat those memories of being young & playing this co-op style with my brother & cousin. Lets face it the #90s kicked @$$!
This is a rare occasion of something old becoming new again! I love the remake & played the Claire campaign in a few sittings . If Resident 7 & 4 had a baby its Res 2 Remake. They should do Code Veronica or Nemesis in this format. Capcom well f'in done!!!!
Been waiting for this game since the RE1 remake, 17 years ago. Yeah, I'm old haha. I still thoroughly enjoy playing the original PS1 trilogy but it'll be really nice to have a modern take on one of the best game ever made.

Completed RE HD Remaster on Steam yesterday prior to the release of the game since i've never played any of the RE games, and I really want to jump back into it, but I have to wait until tomorrow to play RE2, since I preordered, really looking forward to it !
If they remake 3, it would be a decent trilogy: REmaster, 2 remake, and 3 remake.

@@jimemmonstein847 I don't think they forget about it, I just think that some people didn't like it that much, I guess when you look at it, it came out at a time where, people might've had enough with the formula of the games, the game had it's fair share of good and bad aspects but ultimately I don't think it's a bad game.

This resident evil game is insanely good
It's good. But they could have done a better job on the Dog AI. Deems worse then the original's dogs. And they were scripted and easy to avoid as well.
I am a huge resident evil fan and when I heard they were remaking this I was very happy and knew I was going to play it I pre ordered it got the deluxe edition and was fairly happy because I’m just not as much into games as I used to be and thought it was going to be so hard and I would eventually shut it off without beating but once I got home and downloaded the extra content and turned it on I realized it I didn’t get stuck 3 hours after playing I would of never shut it off the first night and who knew the second time I turned it on I was gonna beat it and say that is the best game I’ve ever played right there with goldeneye 64 if they remake 3 and code Veronica those will also be excellent games

I played the one shot and was hooked and decided to pre-order. I played the original, and was selling it at the store I worked at at the time. The amazing thing about both the Res 1 and then Res 2 was the amount of people that would come in store and start talking and debating all of their problems and experiences with the game. This is what a game should be a thing that can inspire a conversation and get people to open up. This is why I think the idea of narrative and thought provoking game should be out there to inspire new generation of gamer to think and talk to other.

This game is awesome. I was just on time to pick it up in CA at 9pm yesterday. I work as a teacher and a student at the same time- so i can't play until I'm out of my classes for my masters tonight. Or maybe I'll just skip class...
I had the same feeling of dread playing this game from when i first played it on my N64 in 1999.
I loved the game and I think this is EXACTLY what RE franchise needed. It’s a great game. However, it does have quite a few flaws. Identical boss battles and Capcom removed too much content from the original. If Remake of the first game did something, it actually ADDED more.
the thing i loved about this amazing remake is that it made me feel like that kid that played re2 for the 1st time again. It makes u fell nostalgic yet its fresh, while playing i never felt safe and always looked over my shoulder specially when Mr.X was around earing his footsteps outside while low on ammo and health items make u feel desperate and unsafe (actual fear heheheheh). Those stickers were commonplace with some games and PSM who regularly put stickers in their magazine for your memory cards. It was the easiest way to know what was on what. Good times. I still have my guide for this from the PS1, I wonder how well it lines up?

reminds me when I was playing the evil within I beated a boss and puzzle were I was stuck for a day then I door an elevator got out and I fell though the floor endlessly I thought It was going to respawn me back outside the elevator but instead my game crashed and my data got corrupt I sold the game the next day

Resident Evil 2 is one of the GREATEST horror game OF ALL TIME it shaped the survival horror or any zombie games in general. RE2 being back in this generation is fucking amazing modern gamers need to taste this! Excited for the full release.

It has always been my favorite resident evil. Even then i liked it more than the first game. This was the first zombie game that made me feel like i was in those oldschool romero movies.

My favorite thing so far is there's like no introduction to any of the enemies. Like Mr. X is just there, at least in Leon's scenario. Birkin just drops in on you for a boss fight. If you've never played any of these games before and you were playing this, you'd be like "wtf?! Who is this big tall monster!? Why is he chasing me!?" It's so great. And then having to lose X so you can go search the rooms you haven't searched yet, but you have to be fast because he will come find you.
Edit: I also love how detailed everything is. like in the original RE2, it was hard to tell what room you were in. Or what everything was supposed to look like. And I totally get it was a PS1 game so it didn't have that kind of detail, but it's so fucking cool seeing it now. It's nostalgic. I'm so amped for RE: NEMESIS!!!

Oh man, downloading it now, can't wait to play it. I still remember playing it back in the days so many times that I could run the entire game with eyes closed. My favorite is still Code Veronica, I hope they eventually do a remake of that.
Can’t wait to play it but personally still a teensy bit disappointed that they did go in the direction like they did in the re1 REmake where they kept the fixed camera angles and gameplay but added a plethora of new mechanics, areas, puzzles, enemies, story bits, etc

I got to agree with you that as this remake has done and has cleaned up a lot. There are those little pieces that have ecos of the past game. They really did flesh out the interactions with Leon and Clair and the others. I remember when the original came out and I bought it and yeah now that I am in my 40's its great seeing a really well done remake of it. Capcom seems to have pulled this off and done things right. So few Dev's have put this much effort into things like this remake.
Honestly, it’s good to hear a true fan commend a remake. It is more of a recommendation than a lot of other reviews.
I’m not normally great with horror games as I tend to start them and chicken out (sorry outlast 2). But last year I played resi 7 and alien isolation and actually completed them. I loved the gameplay of resi 7 so I can’t wait to start playing this remake. Still a bit of a newcomer to the series as it’s my 2nd resi game. Love your work here and on gameranx Jake!

Masterful my ass, I use to beat the original Resident Evil 2 Two or three times a day it was so much fun...This shitty attempt to remake it was a total failure. It lost everything the original was amazing for.
Was a bit hesitant of this "overhaul" of one of my favourite games of all time. This is RE2 with the same game mechanics as RE4 (which is great IMO). It just works and this is how you make a remake, thumbs up!
By the way...i have been noticing many ignorants complaining about the lack of fixed camera.....i mean...RIDICULUOS...no need 4 an explanation4 it...coz again.....its RIDICULOUS .

I love Resident Evil, RE2 was my first. I recently had a discussion with my cousin about RE2 he had asked if I bought the game and I said yes, he then told me I heard the game is only 7-8 hours, I told him play time doesn't matter to me replayability does and for me Resident Evil has it, and that I will always play them until it has nothing left to offer.
I am so hyped for this game. Just finished the original for the (lost count...) time... you just added more hype to my hyped level 🙏🏽💪👻
I didn't really like the Mr. X constant threat mechanic. It just frustrated the hell out of me in the end, I started the game on Standard difficulty but when Mr. X showed up I found myself dying so often that the game started to ask me if I wanted to lower the difficulty and I eventually caved. I was constantly running from one side of the station to the other only to find he'd be showing up what felt like maybe a minute later at the most. It also had me so preoccupied trying to out run him that I kept stumbling into Zombies and lickers.

MrX was amazing, when i was doing Claire B i run into the armory to try to circle him around there but he gto in, did not see me, and went away. i could her him opening the ofice door and checking inside for me.
eventualy i noticed he does not hear u if u walk, so u can lure him to one side of the building, then walk back and he stays there looking for u, this gives u more time to go do the puzzles and pickup stuff without he chasing me like in my Leon A which i though was a permanent persuit
All I know is the 40 minutes I played earlier I absolutely loved. Such a faithful yet kind of new remake. I’m impressed so far.

"Leon and Claire interact more than once" Are you sure? Because I remember in the classic they spoke in police car, RPD hallway, STARS room, other times via walky talky, Umbrella lab when Claire asks leon to get Sherry. Now, they speak at the car, fire escape, and the lab where they say "Woah! you're here too?? Escape without me!".. I think they ruined their interactions.

Just finished my first playthrough with Leon this game is the resident evil I've been waiting for since 4. The way you feel on edge having so little resources with Mr.x behind you making you feel like you need to figure things out now or you're dead. I had no ammo left when I fought William in the final fight I ended up literally killing him with a knife and I felt like such a badass.. amazing ass game.

Never played the original but always heard it was amazing, once I heard about this remake I immediately pre-ordered a copy
As someone who never played the original, I fucking love this. I bought it the day it released, and it consumed me until I beat the first playthrough of Leon. I'm saving my Claire run until I've beaten a few other games on my list because I want it to stay new and not let the tension die down. But it was absolutely amazing. Resident Evil is a series that I play when I want to feel, basically, frustrated for fun. My friends and I jokingly call it Anxiety Simulator 3. Lol. Alien Isolation being Anxiety Simulator and RE7 being Anxiety Simulator 2.
RE2 is an amazing looking game, and you're very right, you do feel more and more fucked as you play. You play for those moments where you're low on health and ammo, you cannot find any herbs, and you round a new corner hoping to find a safe room or some heals...just to find 2 lickers. Those are the best moments, ESPECIALLY when you actually make it through and you feel this relief rush over you. It's not cheesy at all like the old games were, but this is a good thing. It's done in such a smart way.
Also, even as someone who never played the original 3 RE games, I still know a lot about them and was able to see so many ways this paid homage to them. Honestly, this game felt like the new RE4. RE4 was perfect, it was flawless from start to finish. I thought another survival horror game would never live up to those standards, but RE2 does. It's another Leon adventure, who is my favorite character, and it's even more terrifying than RE4 was. In RE4 there were these quiet moments that showed us a bit of beauty and peace in the area. A nice sunset, some soft music, a few items littered about. RE2 doesn't have these, and as a die hard tension fan, it is better for it. Everywhere looks disgusting. Even the safe areas feel dangerous, you know there are enemies waiting for you just outside of it, and while the music is calm, it is nowhere near inviting. It's twisted in a way.
Absolute 10/10, look forward to playing again.

I just keep thinking this game is a masterpiece and I can’t find a better word. It’s everything we grew up with in survival horror.... that wonderful game play loop of key, map, shoot, key, save, puzzle, etc .... but more well done than basically any game we’ve seen like it. I think it stands shoulder to shoulder with the best in the genre. What it really makes you long for is the unrealized Silent Hills game by Kojima because graphically... we don’t get a lot of survival horror games this AAA and this pure. It’s AMAZING that this game exists in the ultra high quality state that it does. Capcom rocks.
