What a Brilliant idea for January - books to cheer you up. Here in Chicago we've just had 12" of snow, the daytime temperature is -5C and falling. Time to cosy up indoors and read a funny book. I've read all of the books you mentioned except the Thursday Murder club, which I'm going to request from my library. The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry was recently made into a movie with Jim Broadbent in starring role and Penelope Winton as his wife. Also High Fidelity was made into a movie in 2000. Starring John Cusack, it was set in Chicago but apparently was faithful to the original storyline. Another funny book for your viewers is The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. The life of a lonely bookstore owner is changed when a small girl is left in his bookstore. Very funny observations on small children , a romance and a happy, hopeful ending.
Thanks! Yes, I've only just become aware of the film of Harold Fry - and 2 of our best actors too - I must try and see that! Thanks for the recommendation too!
Hello. New subscriber here. I’ve read and enjoyed all four books in the “The Thursday Murder Club” series. In my opinion, they keep getting better and better!
Oh my goodness, I've loved so many of these myself, I love the fact that so many more older people become bookish protagonists in heartwarming uplifting books, but also clever books. You must read Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn, I think you'll love it! It's about a group of 'air hostesses' who've actually worked for a secret British organisation as spooks (think more along the lines of black ops agents for MI6) who are about to retire when the company decides to throw them a party on a yacht... And that's when things get interesting...
I love your book reviews. You focus on books I actually want to read whereas some reviewers talk about books you should read but don’t. Many thanks for being so relatable. I live in New Zealand so we have very hot weather at the moment and I envy your cooler climate
I saw this video about a month ago. Even though you hadn't read "Eleanor Oliphant" at the time of video, your description of the book made me want to read it. I just finished this book today. It would definitely go in my "Hard to put down" list. So many off the title character's thoughts and remarks are just funny and surprising througout the story. Towards the end I needed tissues closes by. I highly recommend this one. Thanks for introducing the book.
New subscriber. I have always loved to read. Have you ever heard of Ingles fletcher. She writes a series of books about settlers from the british isles settling in the southern us. Sorry about the capitalation and punctuation. This is the first time i have sent a comment too. I enjoy your channel and can see myself sitting with you and a cup of tea for a good chin wag. Cheers.
Eleanor Oliphant hit me really hard. I loved it so much, but there are some parts that are traumatic, particularly if you've ever struggled with depression. People have discussed whether Eleanor is autistic, and I must say I resonate with some of her habits. Others have said that all of her behaviors are a trauma response.
Thanks for this - I hope, though, that ultimately it is uplifting. When I read the description, I wondered about autism. It sounds fascinating - I think books dealing with depression and trauma are extremely important.
Elinor Oliphant is Fine is one of my favorite books ever. It is so good! I had forgotten about High Fidelity. I saw the movie when it first came out and loved it. John Cusack is great. I desperately want to like the Richard Osman series but I didn’t like the characters in the “home.” I’m going to go back and try again. Harold Fry was great. Your descriptions of the books brought a smile to my face!!
Thanks for the terrific list. I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned him, but, as someone who loves Douglas Adams, I wonder if you’ve read any Jasper Fforde. His Thursday Next series begins with The Eyre Affair. Thursday Next is a Special Operative in Literary Detection who investigates the kidnapping of characters from literary fiction. Great fun.
I read the Elinor Olefant book - it's so good! I think you will really enjoy it! I'm very interested in a couple of those that you mentioned - particularly, Thursday Murder Club and The Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I think I may put those on my TBR list! Thanks for a great video!
Yes, cheer me up. Lol. And yes Richard Osman always cheers me up. I have read the first three and loved them all. I’m definitely going to read his last one as well.
The one series of books that are always guaranteed to raise many a chuckle at any time of the year must be Sue Townend's Adrian Mole stories. Every one of them is laugh-out-loud hilarious but for me the very best is "Adrian Mole And The Weapons Of Mass Destruction" which - quite literally - made me fall out of bed with laughter!
Only one of these that hasn't been on my radar is High Fidelity. Watched the film of Harold Fry but would like to read the book. The remainder i have read over the year's and like you it was back in the days of the tv series that i read the HHGTG series. Thanks for recommendations.
I read and enjoyed Eleanor oliphant. Hope you like that one. I saw both films about the man walking and high fidelity but didn't know about the books. ☹️
The lighting and your lovely dog make this a very cozy video. You've piqued my interest regarding High Fidelity, not a book or author I've ever considered reading before. Eleanor Oliphant is a great book but very sad and depressing, definitely something to think about when picking books in January I think. BJD - my favourite film ever. When I read the book I was surprised at how different it was to the film, namely that Mark Darcy comes across as a lot more lovely and even more obviously head over heels for her than he was in the film. A lovely book and film. Great list.
I loved Harold fry for lots of reasons it had a huge emotional impact on me. Ive just started Rachel Joyces perfect she also has a lovely short story collection ideal for winter/Christmas called Snow Angel. Elenour Olyphant was also really good read i wish i hadnt given my copy away now
Thank you for this - good theme! I agree with others on Eleanor Oliphant - I also loved it. Another suggestion I'd add for smiles and laughs is Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary.
If you like the murder club series, you may like The Marlow Murder club. Similar premise. I loved EOIPF. All time favourite book. I haven’t read HHGTG but now I might just pick up a copy! Thanks for the recommendation.
Hi Tilly! So much enjoying your video's in the last month since discovering your chanel. Have read a couple of these. Am putting the others on my list. I actually didn't know High fidelity was a book too : )
Okay! Ill go for smiles, chuckles, laugh out loud! Also, seriously subscribed finally, enjoying your presentations v much! I have Thursday Club, put it higher in the queue. MUST read Guide to Galaxy, sounds right exactly up my alley ( street). Now want to read B J's Diary. I love diaries & i love humor ( currently reading E. M. Delafield's, oh, wonderful😅) ( & i love Mr. Pooter of Diary of Nobody) . I want E. Oliphant! I keep seeing in Thrift shops ( charity shops). I also love that sweater ( jumper?). Subscriber from so. California. We are wintry cold at night but somewhat warmly sunny by day. 🤷♀️
Hi. Im so glad i found your channel. Ive been watching Nicole too and am excited to start glue booking roo. Ive been harvesting but havent started glueing yet. I love the idea of using wrapping paper for backgrounds. Have a great day.
We are having the SAME kind of weather here in the States! (Mi.) Ugh! Just subscribed to your channel. Have watched before. Thanks for this CHEER UP list! I did read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry many yrs. ago. Thoroughly enjoyed it, will re-read again. Wasn't there a sequel?
Current,y reading The People on Platform 5 while I wait for The Thursday Murder Club from the library and will be adding High Fidelity to my list! 🥰🥰 Always love the books you recommend!
I was scratching my head, trying to figure out why the plot of "The People on Platform 5" sounds so familiar, and yet I don't recall reading that title. It turns out that I have read it but the title was changed for North American readers to "Iona Iverson's Rules for Commuting." It seems strange that a perfectly good title would change but there you go.
You've made me want to reread The Hitchhikers books that I've read and continue on with the ones I haven't. I will agree with others that Eleanor Oliphant is a feel good book and a good recommendation for the winter blahs.
I need to read Bridget Jones, I love that movie so much 👏🏻 and you’ve definitely convinced me to read Hitchhiker’s Guide, even not being a sci-fi reader.
I've been reading indigenous trickster stories to get through January. 'Motorcycles and Sweetgrass' has a foolish god starting a feud with some racoons. 'One Good Story, That One' by Thomas King has Coyote playing tricks on the first people...Adam and Eve? Really any Thomas King is fantastic. 'Indians on Vacation' keeps changing when I re-read it.
I absolutely loved Hitch Hiker’s Guide when it was on radio. Laughed out loud over and over. A great experience.

I’ve read the Osman trilogies and absolutely enjoyed for pure entertainment value…a perfect gloomy, wintery read.
Bridget Jones is such a comfort, both the books and films! ☺
Great topic. I recommend The Rosie Project if no-one has read it; made me laugh out loud.
Hello. New subscriber here. I’ve read and enjoyed all four books in the “The Thursday Murder Club” series. In my opinion, they keep getting better and better!
Loved Eleanor Oliphant!
I read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry!! It was a sweet story.. that I remember.. I read it a while ago.. ❤ hugs from Eileen in the USA..

Nice to hear another Kiwi loving the cooler weather.. I do too...although enjoy it here in Melbourne
What a sweet idea for a focus! I recently started Pratchett's Discworld which has been bringing the smiles in spades.
I swear I'm going to start reading Pratchett soon! Don't know why I haven't yet.
@@booksfrommybookshelf I started with the witch part of the series (Equal Rites), highly recommend
Just writing to say that I so enjoy cozying up to your videos! I’ve been adding your recommendations to my reading list on a regular basis. Thank you!

I can't believe I will be 68 this month and have worked in 5 libraries and have never read The Hitchhiker's Guide. You look very cozy

Oh yes - of course! I don't have any copies, but I do remember reading them. Very funny! Thanks for mentioning these.
Yes ! Adore this series always makes me howl with laughter I love Adrian but also all the supporting characters like pandora ect ❤
Are we not going to mention Rosamunde's fantastic jumper! Love it

I’ve read most of them and I totally agree with you! We sure need « funny » in January! 😂 A huge snow storm is coming our way in Quebec City! 🥶
The mega-snowfall has already begun here in Eastern Ontario. Bundle up and make sure you have enough books to get you through it.😄
Yikes! Stay warm 🙂

I love The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry!! I read it a couple years ago!! ❤

I think there are a series of books with the same characters - but there not exactly sequels.
Current,y reading The People on Platform 5 while I wait for The Thursday Murder Club from the library and will be adding High Fidelity to my list! 🥰🥰 Always love the books you recommend!

Show covers of books, please
❤📚📚❤️
Hold book 2 up so we can write down, high fidelity, didnt show book at all.
Sorry - I was sure that I did! Perhaps it wasn't long enough 🙂
