Top tip for drilling straight holes: use an over size washer on the drill bit, it spins as you start to drill, if it moves towards the work piece you are too high, towards the drill you are too low, keep it in the middle and you are level, and now you just concentrate on the left or right level.
From what I know of my brothers cows it won't take them long to figure out the bump mechanism. They already know to nudge the gates to see if they haven't been chained and either push through or bounce it off the post and swing the gate open. Happy cow days.
I like the irony of 1st step is throwing the instruction out, then calling the manufaturer. :) I too have had to dig deap into a bin for the instructions, whilst leaving my pride in said bin. Neat gate, I've seen these years ago, but nevedr knew how the delayed close could work. Stupid simple once setup.
Bump gates have been used in the Texas sheep country for many years. The gates I have seen are much heavier built. The pivot pipe is usually 6-8 inch diameter. Many of the ranches run cattle as well. I have never heard of cattle going through them, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened
Unlucky if a frisky animal gives it a solid push though. I think this product solves a problem I didn't know I had. It's good to see new products though.
I honestly don’t think that gate would be that good if you had cattle in the paddock coz if they go to rub on it it would just open but I think it would be great in different scenarios

I was always trying to think up self opening gates fencing as a lad. Never thought of this type though, would have worked well for sheep maybe but not cattle surely. Love the idea.
Another great video from you Tim, showcasing another potential tool for farms. But i have to chip in and say Bump gates arent new to the market, we had one on my childhood property over 30 years ago! Warning!!! You can have issues with cattle using the bumpers as head scratchers!!!!!
A lot of work just so you don't have to get out of your car. Checked out the system & for the exorbanent cost I can buy 4 electric gate openers with remotes for opening & closing a gate.
This was installed in a cattle paddock. We will see. We left the catch posts higher to avoid injury for stock and them getting lost in long grass and damaged by slashers etc. The gate requires very specific angles to work. If the posts can be thrown out of alignment then this would cause problems. The gate also needs to be offset from the corner by about a foot to allow the gate to travel 110 degrees to the catch post. Advantages include no batteries, no wires and no switches to break.
Far better than undoing gate and pushing it open fast with the brumby Ute while racing the 4 sheep who think they're dogs and just want to play silly buggers dancing around the vehicle :D Although the bump part looks perfect for rubbing that itchy spot between horns, especially for goats, I'd love to test how that goes.
Had one of these for 15 years. Great idea most of the time. Main problem was the ladies hitting it way too hard and bending everything. If you smash into them, they bounce off the catch hook and slam into the car. That was somehow always my fault. Also, seasonally, the ground moves and throws the alignment out too. Horse floats and trailers can catch as it closes and tear the whole thing out of alignment. NO ONE READS THE "IF IN DOUBT OPEN BY HAND " sign. First thing to break is the locking pin at the hole drilled through it. Make some spares first. The pivot points on the "bump" arm are weak and need reinforcement from time to time also.
Very fiddly by the looks and I see issues arising when yarding cattle running them down the fence line - potential for them to bump it and lose them into the next paddock.
I remember the good old days in the CSG industry when I had 10 gates to open to get to a well head or storage pond……due to the GPS/telemetry monitoring systems in the vehicle, each gate required hand opening and every time the car was moving the seatbelt must be engaged for safety or it was instant dismissal!
@@FarmLearningTim I have a small property (5 acres) and this would be very handy. However, with the setup involved, and only using it once every week or two, maybe i should look for a smaller, simpler solution. Or just push the damn gate! I liked the video, though.
