Thank you!
Really annoying to have to do that on a brand new 70k car
Yes, I agree. But this instruction is also good if you just need to get under the hood for any reason.
Fantastic video. I hope to never have to charge my FOO 12V battery but thanks for all the steps and details!
Even if you don't have a problem with the 12V battery, it's good to know how to get inside the hood for other reasons.
Thank you, Matt - followed your detailed instructions and installed the lead for the battery charger for the 12v battery.
Thanks! Your videos are very helpful should the day come where I face the same issues. Great job! I really wish Fisker had learned from other EVs and installed leads that are externally available.
Thanks you for sharing this. I hope I don't have to go this. Had FOO over a month now so far so good. Keep fingers crossed.
Thank you for your instructions. I only got to drive my FOO for one week and my wife and I were out of the country for a month. Everything dead. Working now due to your video. Thanks
I’m glad it worked out!
This is absolutely brilliant. It does remind me of working on my 1976 Corvette with routing wires.
This is really smart, but honestly we shouldn't have to do this keep the car running.
Also, when I first saw a video of someone demonstrating how to open the hood, I commented that it was potentially an unnecessary obstruction to doing basic maintenance to the car.
This is a case in point.
My Fisker Ocean Extreme is supposed to be delivered in a few weeks so I decided to attend a Fisker Ocean owner’s meet-up in Southern California over the weekend. There were maybe 20-25 current owners who attended and almost all of them had minor issues but still loved their Oceans. Like any new car company (including Tesla) there are going to be kinks to work out at the beginning but the Fisker should be fine moving forward.
Just follow these simple instructions and in a couple of hours ur car will be running
After about 5 months with it, my parents are considering getting the purchase annulled.
Each time you drive it it's a dice roll what systems will be down, the radar system, the regen braking, blind spot system, parking sensors either not active, or permanently thinking somethings close so it beeps every time you go slow, backup camera not working, keyless not reading etc.
Probably don't help that Fisker has no good answers on just about anything, emergency kit that was ordered is still not delivered, and the winter tires were so slow to be delivered that the car had to be parked for 2 weeks, because it was.. well, winter. Oh and the heating is at best wildly misscalibrated. Drove it to and from the mountains over christmas and had the heat turned up to 30c and it was maybe 15c in the car.
But it drives nice.
Wow, sounds like your parents are having serious issues. I’ve had my Fisker Ocean for about three weeks now and I haven’t had any problems. It sounds like your parents live in a pretty cold climate so maybe that creates more complications. I live in California so we don’t have to deal with harsh weather conditions.
@@peterchang3513 yep, in Norway. It is less fuzzy when it's warm out, and car is not full of salt and road grime, but that is a 30min drive before it's dirty again.
This is a Ocean One, might be more buggy than an extreme, but in theory they should be the same.
Bit of a shame that jumping into my 2011 vw feels almost like a relief because it just works. Nothing special, new or fancy, just everything where you expect it doing what it's supposed to.
thank you
Thanks for the video! Can't wait for my Extreme to arrive. Really wished they have put a plastic or even plexi covering over all these guts less dust/dirt settles in on them.
cool video thanks for that
do you have also a link for European customers?
@@gentlemensworldPurchase link of the items? Sorry, I don't have links for outside North America. But you could search the product names to find similar versions. Also local hardware stores should have these items. Thanks!
@@MTNRanger again thanks a lot going to check that up for sure. Really cool content you doing great skills thanks again
apparently it is advanced rocket science for car manufacturers to make problemfree 12v battery system for EVs. Kia, Hyundai and other OEMs also have major challenges with this
Thanks!
You’re welcome. I appreciate that!
I installed such wire connection to my 12V battery in my Tesla Model 3, so I can leave a phone or a laptop in the frunk to be charged,
because the 12V auxiliary plug inside the car is de-energised when the car is sleeping. Or also I could connect an accessory, such as a tyre air pump.
Note: But recently, the ODBC2 plug is providing a constant 12V even when the car is sleeping, so I don't need to access the battery any more.
Yes, I was one of the people that worked on the OBD2 software with Scan My Tesla.
Great service video yet again. THANKS. Maybe a suggestion for something that might be somewhat critical. I see you identify 3 coolant reservoirs. I have seen where 2 Ocean owners have had coolant pumps fail and their Oceans go into limp mode. Maybe a video on the coolant pump location. Not sure if you want to experiment with removing and reinstalling your good pump but maybe a location and an idea of doing it. Another obstacle is getting a replacement pump when needed. In fact I think I will do research in getting one JUST IN CASE.
As owners may be responsible for their own service and maintenance, this will be important. At this point, I’m not removing and/or messing with anything that is currently working!
@@MTNRanger absolutely understandable. Can you believe that this is the current situation. Unbelievable, actually I take that back. It’s 2024 and between greed, incompetence, and unacceptability I actually do believe it
Nice job. The other option would be to connect one end of a charger extension lead to the car 12v, leaving the other end accessable from outside, then connect another extension to the car, so you can keep the mains and charger in a garage and just run 12v charger extension to the car. I did this fir a 2020 MG ZS EV, where I could fish out the connector to the battery through the fake grill at the front.
Yes, you can connect an extension cord to the lead. I did leave the end of the cord by the wiper blade just outside the hood so you can attach an extension to it.
Matt, how long have you found you have to leave the battery tender connected (I have the 3 amp version) in order for it to show your battery is fully charged?
I only charged the 12V battery twice. One time for four hours and a second time for six hours. Ever since fixing the negative terminal, I have not had to charge the 12V battery nor have warnings anymore.
You should first have use a 12V battery monitor with a bluetooth connection to check using a smartphone App the charging status of the 12V battery.
This would help you to determine how often and for how long the DC/DC inverter is charging the 12V battery.
Typically, for my Tesla Model 3, when not driving, the DC/DC inverter runs every 3 days for 2 hours,
and the High voltage battery consumption is about 3% a month. So using a battery charger is basically useless is you can plug your EV.
However, I use a battery charger for an ICE car and charge the 12V battery for one hour every night using a timer. I used a 12V battery monitor
to determine how long and how often the battery charger was needed. The battery charger has a charging limiter but I noticed that the
charger was running longer than necessary and was constantly charging to the max and stopping for a short time and charging again all the day long,
and I don't think thois was good for the battery. My strong advice is to get a 12V battery monitor with a bluetooth connection.
In part three I will cover the battery monitor. Yes, you are right about checking the voltage. I have received three low battery warnings in the past six days. So the HV battery is not correctly charging the 12V. It’s a known issue that Fisker is working on. I started tracking it tonight and will gather a few days of data for the next video.
Thanks so much for this. Two questions: Is it necessary to remove the clips from the leads only if you intend to close the hood while it charges? What are those specific work gloves?
If you just need a quick attachment, use the clips. The ring connectors offer a solid connection to the terminal. It will work either way. The inexpensive work gloves are from Harbor Freight or Home Depot.
@@MTNRanger Perfect. Thanks for the quick reply!
Hi, just circling back on this. Did any of the software updates resolve the 12v issue of not being charged? Which version? Lastly, do you still have this connection attached to the vehicle? Thanks.
Update 2.0 improved the 12V battery charging. I have an update here: th-cam.com/video/trsJT_rK2vo/w-d-xo.html
does your state not require you to install a front license plate? I think here in CA, it's required.
Luckily I live in one of the 19 states that don't have a front license plate.
Did you put the bolt on the positive terminal back on?
Yes, check out 9:55
Hi what is that green module / clip with yellow tag? Thank you for the video
That's the emergency cut off for the 12V and high voltage battery pack AKA fireman's safety. You definitely don't want to mess with that unless it's an emergency.
@@MTNRangeroh boy! I need your help.
why did you attach to the positive terminal at the front and not the back one which has a "hatch" where your cable comes out??
You can use either one. It fit easier on the front one.
Hello MTNRanger
Hello MTNRanger, I’m curious to know if you are able to help owners of Fisker Ocean Ones to install the 12V battery charger if some of them are not as experienced with having to open the hood of the car and play with the terminals
I would be glad to help anyone out in my metro area of Raleigh (30-40 owners) or even within the state of NC. Farther away would be difficult to do.
Hi, Matt - update: took my FOO in for service at the Fisker Service facility in Huntington Beach to address a number of open items, one of which being unable to get the car to do a “deep sleep” reset (charge point light kept blinking blue for over 30 minutes, after doing the protocol steps). Their tech told me that the battery charger lead I had installed (to use the trickle charger on the 12volt battery) was bypassing the 12v battery sensor, preventing it from going into deep sleep. They removed the lead, charged the 12 volt battery to full, re-calibrated the windows, and took care of the other service items. Don’t know if it made a difference, but I had connected to the positive terminal on the opposite end of the cover from what you showed in the video. Just an FYI..
Thanks for the comment. I hope everything is working better now. I have not had any issues with the battery monitor. My car goes to sleep easily and does the deep sleep reset.
Hey you mind telling me what street or address that HB location is please?🙏🏼
Fisker HB was at 14422 Astronautics Ln.
Huntington Beach CA 92647, but I have heard this location is closed. I was last there on 3/11/24.
So I gather you are leavingthe charger cables wired to the + & - terminals for future issues? Are you expecting to have to charge it again?
Yes, just in case. Once the 12V battery OTA update comes out and the warnings go away, I will remove it. Until then, I'm using a battery monitor to keep track of activity. That's coming up in part 3.
Matt, so you have both the BT battery monitor and the tender charger leads attached to the 12v + and - battery terminals as shown here, or has this changed since you got the full 2.0 install?
How long does it need to be to have the quick connection outside the hood? 20" or 6 feet seem to be the choices.
Never mind Matt, I just watched your video again and saw that you had mentioned the length...
Why didn't you install it on the accessible positive terminal that is fused?
The other terminal was harder to connect to. Feel free to use that one if you prefer. Thanks for letting me know it is fused.
When I installed the leads for the battery tender, I did connect to the + terminal closer to the windshield, but was told later by the Fisker techs that doing so was bypassing the charging sensor for the 12v battery, which was preventing my car from going into deep sleep. Planning on installing a BT charging sensor, using the positive (+) terminal Matt shows in this video.
Did you have the Fisker on or was it in deep sleep? How did you do it ?
When opening the hood, it doesn't matter if it is on or in deep sleep. The car is always using the 12V, even when "sleeping".
@@MTNRanger I thought maybe the alarm system is going on. When I open it in deep sleep and charge it or something like that
Honestly I don't get how he said they would save money by not having a hood meant for the user to open, but it seems like there's just as much complexity in the service only hood
I don’t get it either. But the hinge assembly is much less robust than expected if it were a regularly opened hood.
The Fisker service folks did caution me to make sure to re-tighten the bolts to factory specs, or you run the risk of the hood opening while you are driving.
Thank you.
Most everyone who owns an ocean just loves it. I worry about their stock right now. I just love the ocean. Do you feel they will pull through and exist in still 10 years?
Sure, I think they can survive. But that will require full dedication to customer service and warranty service. I look at stock for the long term when I invest. While low stock price may affect their ability to get more funding in the future, it really is not as important now that they are getting revenue this quarter to offset expenses.
I can’t see them surviving, a video to take a brand new car apart is telling
@@01RobbiegI had plenty of issues the first year of my Model 3. This is no different. A software OTA is coming.
👎There is no way for Fisker staying in business even for a year. The design (mechanical, electrical, cooling) we have seen under the hood in this video is so pure... The best for Fisker is to sell this business to Magna or whoever wants to take it over.
Regarding to the subject - discharged 12V battery.
1. To have SW update you need to have the battery already charged! So it is not so easy, and required manual intervention as minimum for one time.
2. It is shame on Fisker! Before delivery to customer they MUST to charge the 12V battery!
@@Michael-uy7bzAll startups have their issues. Even my Tesla was a mess the first six months. The upcoming software update is to optimize the 12V battery charging. It already charges, just not as good as it should. See this video for why some 12V are dying: th-cam.com/video/GDy0SkZ6Np0/w-d-xo.html
Nice video. Don't really like that they made the hood that way. I would understand if they only wanted Fisker techs working on the car, but those are going to be hard to find. Sometimes you need to do some minor work.
Yes, I totally agree.
The 12 volt battery issue is not new, this would be disappointing from Fisker.
What genius thought it was a good idea to make a hood that requires a trim removal tool to open? that would get old really quick if I was stuck in a dark cold place with a dead 12v battery.
I agree, it was not a good decision.
What a fk'd up design lmaooooooo
Wow there are lots of space in the front! I can't wrap my head around why Fisker didn't spent a couple of hundreds more man hours to engineer rearrangement of some of the electronics, fit a small frunk for dirty charge cables/ tire kit/smelly dirty things (20Liters would be fine) and add a latch for the hood!? this is so stupid. can't even check up on brake/cooling fluids yourself without a lot of hassle!
I agree, that it they should have designed the hood to be more consumer/service friendly. However, after opening it twice now, I can do it under a couple minutes. Frunk storage seems to be highly dependent on the company's goals. A small frunk area would have been nice. I test drove the EV6 and the tiny storage spot just seems like a waste of time. I have removed the trunk tub in my Model 3 and it looks like they could have made it even larger, but they want to give clearance around the coolant system and other things just to be safe.
Interesting. Under the hood, we can tell Tesla is using alien tech compared to other car manufacturers.
How better is the Fisker is compared to a Tesla? Why do people like them so much?
You did not show if this charging solved low battery error message.
Sorry, it was late when I was working on it. Yes, it does solve the low voltage problem, at least temporarily. I'd rather hook it up once a week than have the chance of a dead battery. I'm working on part 3, the battery monitor.
Many people wants to stand out and doesn't like Teslas design. I would still choose this over any Tesla, but the CCS network in Europe is also just as good as Tesla!
hood is made of aluminium so...very light
See my magnet test video. The hood is steel.
so, any ill intentioned individual can open the hood, and tamper with the motor/electronics of the car ... or, the washer fluid!
Just this is enough for me to give up on this car, that I actually had an interest for
Nobody other than the owner is going to know this for such a limited production vehicle. Especially for the hood, which requires special tools that most people will not have. Ne'er-do-wells could also make your tires to flat with the exposed tire valves or steal my Tesla aero covers. There are more serious issues with Fisker and these are not a concern to me.
@@MTNRanger now I know it, and everybody watching these kind of videos. Besides, professionals already know it right away, for sure. It concerns me, though
CAR IS JUNK
Mine’s awesome.
Horrible approah from fisker, worse than my smart eq
Yes, the hood opening requirements were a bad idea.
@MTNRanger at least my smart has straps to keep it from being dropped 😆. Really like these and reservation holder but I need the product to be worth it.
@@nosoupforyou425The hood is held in place with a latch on the driver's side support. In Fisker's defense, the hood area is not supposed to be accessed by the owner. Similar to Mercedes Benz and other car makers with locked hoods on their EVs.
I am not a handyman nor mechanic; not savvy w this sort of thing at all, but where did you get the little plastic pry bars ? My Fisker's battery seems to work fine but I just started driving it & so any standard tips or pre-maintenance advice is welcome
Thanks for watching. All the items are listed in the video description. Here is one link for the plastic pry bars: amzn.to/3tWB9F5

Wow, I really appreciate that!
