When my husband and I were stationed on Whidbey Island NAS, in Washington State , we picked wild blackberries and salmon berries.

I’m excited for this trail but I hope that the trains of the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad will not only continue to operate but thrive. They’ve been and continue to be a huge boon for the region, primarily the towns of Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach, as well as Wheeler. OCSR currently leases the tracks from the Tillamook Air Station to just east of Enright.
The Salmonberry Trail is working with OCSR to plan the coastal segment between Wheeler and Tillamook as rail with trail, as they are from Wheeler east along the Nehalem River to Salmonberry, at the west end of the Salmonberry Canyon.
Salmonberry itself could make a great transfer point between the rails and trail, allowing trail riders to ride up from Wheeler and continue east, or allow those coming from Banks to catch the train and rest their legs down to the coast. OCSR could potentially retrofit their baggage car with bike racks to provide that service, similar to what some other tourist railroads have done.

You notice they didn't say hunting. Last i heard they were going to close the area to hunting 1 mile as the crow flys both sides of the trail. Hopefully they keep the tunnels and stuff. Problem is now everyone knows about it. It won't be the same anymore.

Once it is a trail, there will be access for hunters along the right of way. Currently, carrying a firearm along the railroad right of way is a federal offense.

The railroad is still owned by the Port of Tillamook Bay and is leased to the Salmonberry Trail Foundation for 99 years. The right of way is about 25 feet wide in most places, up to a maximum of 100 feet wide. There is *no way* the foundation or the port would have the jurisdiction to ban activities like hunting for a 1-mile margin on either side of the trail. That is quite the wild rumor.
It won't be "the same," but you're talking about an area that's been in a state of constant change since before the railroad went in. The Salmonberry canyon is one of the most geologically active places on the north coast. It changed pretty drastically after both the '97 and '07 storms. It's continued to change as the vegetation has grown in over the last 17 years since the wash-outs. It will change again as the trail is built, sure, but there will be much _less_ change, especially in the portions that run through the Coast Range, than there would be if they did the kind of work required to restore rail service.

We really should be restoring the railroad and bringing the industry back to our coast

The company that owns the railroad disagreed. That line wasn't profitable, even before it was destroyed by storm damage. The port received millions to restore the line after the 1996 storm and still wasn't able to afford to pay for their portion of the repairs (25%). When they got money from the feds again, after the 2007 storm, they chose to invest that money elsewhere as they saw that maintaining that line was a logistical nightmare.
Also, rails are indeed more efficient at moving logs out of forests, which means getting the train up and running again would displace dozens if not hundreds of log truck drivers jobs. So many other processes in modern logging have been heavily automated, material handling is one of the few big jobs left in the industry.

@@OddsandEnds Having this trail is amazing but I agreed, USA is amazing and we are great but I wouldn't say we are the best in the world. At least economically we are not. Oregon is so much better than most of the states I been to and was lucky enough to live there and experienced the outdoors and nature and am happy to see and experience that again.
