I rode a 1939 Otis this past Saturday. It’s been converted to automatic but the lever and call panel are still inside it. It rides the same as when it was lever controlled. ( I got to run the lever when I was in junior high just to take it down. It was described to me as a 30 speed Otis.) it runs about 470 something feet and is Art Deco.

Amazing historic manually controlled and amazing historic automatic one like the one with the spring loaded gate that's closes automatically when you push the same button and thank you for sharing this with me Andrew

The 20 Year-Old Train Station Elevator in my neighborhood has also just 1 Button for up and 1 button for down, but it's not as nice as this beautiful old one.It also has a relay controller. Nice Vid😁

Unlike other building staff, you can hear it in his attitude and tone of voice that he loves his antique Haughtons

These manual elevators should be around everywhere today so that they don’t break lmao

While I’ve seen 1 call on some older elevators, NEVER have I seen only 1 floor button in the car in the U.S. I’ve seen 1 floor button in the U.K, but those were on modern elevators. You can tell it was designed for 1 more button though. I’ve also seen both that crank & those buttons once before.

I have never seen an elevator with a single button for up and down before either. Probably a relay controller which integrates with the upper and lower limit switches, and the phase reversing relay.

Fast as the elevator traveled up and down has to be a gear-less traction machine with 1:1 roping Wow 200 amps is a huge power surge if the elevator was not slowed down, yes could blow all 3 60 amp fuses while unspecified if this was the secondary disconnect in the machine room which I presume it was, and the primary disconnect in the electrical panel room.

FAST old elevator!! :D I LOVE how it goes so fast and only takes a second to slow down!!! Most of these older elevators I have seen take a few seconds to come to a stop, manual ones in particular. I however cant say a whole lot cause I have only operated one manual, and it was an OTIS. Would you happen to know if there are any other manual Haughton's like this one in Rochester, Buffalo, or Upstate New York??!!?? I would LOVE to get a video of one of these sometime!!! GREAT video. :)

The gates on the newer one are noisy as the doors on one at my local hospital (1990s Otis)

It is weird how pressing the same button inside the second elevator can actually make it to go UP or DOWN, rather than having two separated buttons.
