I was living in Hollywood during 87 and was part of the fan club they mentioned. We watched rare U2 videos, but also worked for Amnesty International and other political activism. They were serious and fun meetings. Am still an activists today. They are my second favorite band of all time.
If I had told them back then, that 10 years down the road (1997) they'd be dressed like the Village People and prancing around to a song called "Disco", they'd have beat the sh%$ outta me. :D
At 1:29 in, we see a band that knew what they were doing all along, and especially during this interview. It would be another three years coming, but Zoo TV is clearly on the horizon.
in the last lines of this interview, Bono talks about the "air being hard" and mentions "H2O, how complicated can you get?"... H2O is water, not air haha. But Bono's points are great nevertheless along with the rest of the band.
What Bono fails to explain or articulate clearly is that they're actually just exploring a musical/pop "genre" : The "folk" song, the "protest" anthem, country western, R&B, Soul...And thats what the band is, a "genre" band, more than a "cover" band... a genre band.
