This video describes a few techniques you can go by to extend the life of your reel and make it work better.

Took my brand new Battle II 5000 for a spin yesterday for the very first time and I hooked a 20lb yellowtail using a Ugly Stik X2 (medium hard) rod th-cam.com/users/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . This combo was recommended on some website and it did not disappoint me. The reel is smooth, the drag click is pretty cool cause i think it adds to the excitement of fighting the fish, personally the drag is my favorite part. I use braid and 300 yards will fill the entire spool. This combo is my main setup from now on although I have to disclose I am new to fishing.
Thank you for the instruction Sir. My reel was running crunchy and I was about to put it in the circular file. With just a half hour and stuff I already had I have it running as smooth as new.

I'm thinking of getting a new rod after 20 years of using a spincast. I've never cleaned it or done anything to it and it has lasted all this time without any problems (until now). I'm beginning to think I've been very fortunate that it has lasted so long.
I like to take apart the bail system and oil/grease the rotating portion and also the handle I’ve seen both corrode! Ardent grease is all I use now it’s a bit more viscous than most I just think you need less to cover areas I’m not a fan of heavy grease! Great video be careful with that power drill a screwdriver is s great invention!
Looking for extra reals for my spinning reels, any ideas ? I do use the cheaper reels at this time, I will be upgrading to more expensive reels soon, I hope.

Hey ReelCleanServices, I cleaned my reel with water, I got a damp towel and wiped the inside parts (I took the drag cap off) and pulled out the reel and just cleaned out the inside where there was some dirt... I don't know why but my reel doesn't "sing" anymore when I pull the drag... is my reel toast or what??
My cheapie didn't have a gear turning the reciprocating block. Instead it has an arm on the outer gear that moves the block back and forth as you turned the handle. Sort of like a piston rod. Since it fell out when I opened the housing, I had to figure out that the hole in the end of the rod fitted over a protrusion in the reciprocating block (which rode on a shaft that I oiled).
I started watching some videos on TH-cam on how to oil / maintenance spinning reels, and only 1 of the many videos address removing and lubricating the line roller (on the bail). I started to clean my reels and did not intend on doing this extra step; primarily because I didn't think any of my reels had bearings in that area. Come to find out, their are reels that do have bearings in the line roller and some that just use lubricated plastic washers. Anyhow, I ended up removing the line roller on one of my reels, and low and behold, it was rusted beyond belief. After seeing that, I decided to take apart the line roller on the rest of my reels, and the same thing had occurred on every reel. I actually had to use an impact driver on two of the line rollers, just to get the screw out. I could not get them out by hand and did not want to risk stripping the screws. One screw did end up breaking. So that's how stuck it was in there.
The point of this is that, I don't think enough people are addressing maintaining the line roller. This will now be the 1st thing I maintain on my reels before anything else. I am almost certain that the reason this happens, is because the line roller is the one part of the rod that is exposed to the most salt. When you think about it, every time you cast your line out into the water, your line gets coated with salt water. That salt water is then transferred to the line roller, and any residual amount transfers to the bearings (if any) of the line roller. Check your reels for this and I'm pretty sure you'll be surprised at what you find.
This issue creates resistance that can be felt when reeling in smaller fish; and proper maintenance of the line roller will allow your line to roll with the line roller, instead of against it. After I lubricated all of my line rollers, I then took a rubber band, cut it and ran it back and forth across the line roller (in a V shape) to make sure it was properly lubricated.

Do you have a video that makes it a in-depth maintenance? This was kind of in between. When I seen you take the side plate off I figured you were going to remove all the old grease and pack it with new. I'm sure a lot of people have sanding grit inside that old grease.
What type and brand of grease do you use and reccomend?
Man I screwed up pretty bad, I bought two beautiful penn spinning reels, a 720z and 450ss.the handle dropped on 720z and broke, so I took the 450 handle and rigged it to work with my 720 cause I was going on a trip, now I realize these are good reels and I should of went and got a new one to use and sent these in to get fixed right. So to make a long story short, say I sent u a penn 720z and 450ss and neither have handles, and the 450 has a missing bail spring that resets it back to allow u to reel, how much to clean, check to see if anything else needs replacing or servicing and grease and get them ready to fish like u wud if they was urs.. Ballpark price? Is the handles even still available?

Great vid and some very good info but I think wd-40 or pb blaster penetrating oil or anything aerosol is to thin and does not last long at all. I use a low weight motor oil and even grease if I have it handy. It lasts much longer and you can be very precise with the amount you use bc it pours very slow. I filled an old visine bottle with motor oil and it dispenses one drop at a time exactly where you want it. Very handy and you can toss it in your fishing bag or in your boat and have it readily available Incase you or aa fishing buddy need it while your on the water
Some parts are supposed to be oiled and some should be greased. Any metal on metal movement should he grease

what grease did you use?
I clean my reels with ballistol same stuff I use to clean my guns. It works.
My grease was old and dirty. I removed the drive gear, cleaned and replaced the grease.
Some good advice in here.
If you keep adding grease into the reel, what about removing the dirty grease that had already been used? You can't keep adding and not removing.

Hi good video talk me into cleaning mine for the first time but on one of mine the bail won't flip back when I turn the handle have to use hand or just hard to flip when handle turn any advice thks

You might say I'm old-fashioned but I have been making a cast and flippin that bail over with my hand for years after breaking one by using the the the handle to flip the bail over. A buddy of mine told me not to do that and I've never broken another reel.
Cool vid but just one thing: at 6:00 you said "it helps if you know what your doing cause you can take the roller apart, clean it and grease the bearing"- in my experience it is absolutely crucial step as this is the bit where most of the reels (especially budget ones) fail if you fish in saltwater.

Also, where are the so called bearings, like when a certain brand says this reel has 5 bearings where another brand says they have 10 bearings? I know that it makes a huge difference in how smooth a reel is, ive just never taken my reels apart and looked for those.

When do you use reel oil ? I see you used grease the whole time.
Also, you opened the side casing to expose the gears. Do you clean inside there at all? What if the salt was exposed to everything in there? Will grease simply do?

My dad recently picked up fishing again and he wanted to refurb his reels but the bail bumper (part number 82215) broke, probably due to the plastic becoming brittle after so much time of not using it...
He hasn't been able to find a replacement part because they don't make them anymore and none of the people making replacement parts ship to Belgium.
I wanted to surprise him for fathers day by using the 3D Laser cutter facilities at my university to fashion a replacement bumper bail part out of plexi (pmma). But for that I'll need the measurements but I can't seem to find any pictures clear enough to figure them out...

Hello, thank you for posting an informative video on Reel Disassembly. I was able to take apart and re-assemble my Penn SG7000. But I have one problem. I also took the shield off of a bail spring compartment and took the spring out. Seemed simple at first. But now that I am re-assembling a few days later, I have no idea how the parts go back into that compartment. I can send a picture if I am not being clear. Could you send a picture or post a video of the internals of a bail spring compartment for a Penn SG reel? Thank you!

question. I have a quantum esaclade thats pretty stiff to turn. could I use a little touch of WD40 instead of the grease?
What kind of grease did you use whats it called
I used "Lucas Red synthetic high speed bearing grease."
I service my reels and container looks like Super Lube which is an excellent choice because it's synthetic and light. I use brake cleaner to degrease the internals. I know sounds awful but It's essentially naptha gas (like used in Coleman stoves) and as such evaporates quickly leaving no residue. Acetone works too but noxious smell is overwhelming. Can't believe he didn't clean the old grease and just added gobs of new grease. Eventually it all globs up slowing down reels. Sad. I use Zero Friction oil (from Pro Shot Products designed for guns) on bearings as it's super light. Likewise Rem Oil also is excellent

I have an ardent c-force spinning reel (freshwater). I actually dropped it in the water today and it got alot of sand in it. Any ideas on how to fix it? Im thinking about just calling ardent and see if they will clean it up for me.
You should be able to take it apart, clean it up and throw it back together as long as you have a schematic and the right tools to help you along the way.

Hey there. I have a problem with my spinning reel. Every time I reel in, it makes a sound. Do you have any tips to fix it? By the way nice video.
By the way it doesn't make any sound if it is at reverse mode. The only noise it makes is when it has it drag on.
Can you do a tutorial for a rear drag reel? I have a Pflueger rear drag that needs cleaned BADLY!!!

I would recommend you do a basic external cleaning and minor lubrication at least every five uses for saltwater. Of course, the extent of use, level of wear, age and quality of reel, and many other factors will contribute toward the need to clean and lubricate.
For fresh water reels, cleaning will be much less often, but it's the same concept.

Seems like maybe the drag knob is stripped out or broken somehow. Without seeing it, it's hard to make a determination.

You service reels yeah right ,I'd try watching some service videos before making your own ...adding grease on old grease for one ! Good luck

A friend I know uses dawn soap to clean then he steams all the oil & grease off. Blow drys it on low settings then he starts from scratch & oil/grease on areas that needs it. Wish I had that luxury.

As a matter of fact, in starting my channel back up, I've been told a few times that a lock-up salvage video would be a great kick-start. I will definitely look into it! Thanks.
Generally if a reel is locked up it's a sign of shot bearings. A complete break down runs around 35. Depending on the types of replacement bearings the price can range from 10-25 on average. If you're ever in Rodanthe on Hatteras Island NC stop by Hatteras Jacks . we are very well versed with all kinds of reels and the damage caused to them by saltwater .
I always do my own Reels with 3 in 1 oil and it cleans it good by taken it all apart and last for a long time i never ever use WD40 becoz of the grit in side the can it last for a long time and never give's me any problem's but people have their own ways of cleaning there fishing gear

For gears, bearings, moving parts, etc., I use Penn Precision grease. It is dark green/blue in color and can be found at many tackle shops, online, and walmart. For a water coating to prevent moisture from contacting the reel, I use super lube general purpose. It's clearish white and is cheap.

Without hearing the noise or getting some info on where it's coming from, I wouldn't be able to tell you if it's normal. Though, I will say that no reel has to be completely silent. If the noise is minimal and doesn't sound like it's hurting anything, it probably isn't. BUT I would still recommend that you get someone to check it out if there's any concern. It could be as simple as the reel needs lubrication.
How often do you disassemble the reel to clean it?
At the beginning of every fishing season.
I did ours once a year in the off season (Minnesota) Total of 6 spinning reels and two bait casting reels.
My friends dad gave me an old penn Silverado inshore 7ft rod. It's not a spinning rod it's some kind of conventional reel or bait caster rod. Would you know which reel went on it?
If it's a conventional rod then almost any smaller conventional reel should fit it. Go to your locally-owned tackle shop and bring the rod with you!
I use small Shimano reels for harbor fishing. I try to buy them when they are on sale. I go through them fast and just figure its just another fishing expense. I will try this and see if they last a bit longer. it's funny how people blow money on sigs or beer and hold on to a cheep reel for years. If you just save 1 buck a day its easy to buy a couple new reels every year.. just my 2cents.. love the video tho..
+ Will Jones. You could apply that to a car. Even an idiot knows a car that has been serviced on a regular basis is going to be a competely vehicle than your car that has never had an oil change or any other kind of maintenance. And now it's ready for the breakers yard like your reels. Using one of your non maintained reels
would feel like stirring stew. A reel is just a tool and i guess you're the guy who uses a blunt axe or a saw with broken teeth. A well maintained tool is a pleasure to use compared to something you have to persevere
with. Stop being lazy or afraid. Lubing reels isn't hard.
A serious angler doesn't neglect his tackle so it can fail when you have a record breaker on the hook.

You didn't understand what i said.. Yes i drop mine off and even service them myself.. I think that reels are constantly getting better and past problems are getting worked out on newer reels. Cars are much more expensive and i prefer older cars.fishing reels are around 2-1200$ so every year of two buying new reels with better gears,drag and ergonomics.. thank you wendy..
I'm starting to think this may be the way to go if I continue to be into mackerel fishing/ jigging for them. & Got that right about money, no one close to me has any time or money for fun activities any more yet never hear anyone not being able to afford food or unable to make it to a wedding xD (part of the reason I need to get away & fish in the first place lol, getting away from modern intellect/people)

What is your opinion of Okuma reels ?
I think that they do make a few good models, but I think that everyone has such different standards by which they judge a reel, my specific criticisms wouldn’t necessarily apply to you. My advice is pick a reel frame (or series/line of reels) or model line, and research reviews on that line of reels and see what people think about them. For me to give a full opinion, I’d have to post a full video on the details of why I like/dislike certain parts of the reel. And I could do that! But there are so many types of reels out there… hard market of videos to get involved in.
I know i am late to the party, but I would swap my wd-40 for balistol if i were you. It is a little more money, but it does not thicken and collect dust like wd-40 will. And also all metal parts should get degreased with a degreaser, soap and water or alcohol based instrument cleaner. Before being reoiled or regreased, this will make sure that any old grime will be removes. Also if you encounter any metal parts with a light rust you can degrease and then brush the rust with a stiff toothbrush or some 0000 steel wool with some balistol on it. This has worked wonder on my reels and my guns.
How about the rain ? Is it ok for reel to get rain on it ?
Sorry for the late reply! In case you're still wondering, most reels and modern fishing equipment is being made to a (fairly) good standard of weather resistence. Obviously, the less the better, but normal rain on the fishing trip and even salt spray from the boat is ok, keeping in mind that this is all considered "normal wear-and-tear". So it's always a good idea to have your equipment serviced at least once a year, and do your part to keep it clean after each trip out. The more you care about your equipment and take prudent steps to maintain it, the more life you'll get out of it.
Once last point, and this one should be obvious but it must be reiterated, you get what you pay for! Do your research and put some money into your reels, rods, etc if you plan on using it for a long time.

You"re absolutely right. In my hast of making the video I showed some practices that shouldn't be exercised at home. I was mainly trying to get the visual content across to the audience, that mostly being the disassembly/assembly process of the reel, along with cleaning info. Thanks!

What kind of grease can I use for the gears?
I use different kinds for different reels. For most, I like Penn's Precision reel grease. The small jar (2 oz.) is about 5 dollars and lasts significantly longer than you would think. But there are others. Super Lube's General Purpose Grease is a good one. It's clear (white looking in the jar) and is a little more slimy. It works better for heavily worn gears where tolerances are larger.

Yup, this will help me a lot. Just used the video to open up a cheap-o spinning reel I have because it fell on salt water and I knew I would have to clean it and re-lube the insides or risk getting it all rusted up. Glad I stumbled across your video.
Why dont you put out the main gear, clean the old grease a re-grease everything with new one ?
Why would they not put a grease fitting at the bottom of the real or somewhere so that you can just put a grease gun on there and push out the old grease with new. (Rhetorical question)
Using WD-40 on fishing reels? All my fishing reels just staged a protest in horror.
I just recently greased my gears and it won't reel consistently it'll reel then stop after a few reels. Didn't do that until I went in there to grease up. What could I have possibly done?
Weird for sure. Maybe there is sand in the grease or some particulate the is getting stuck? Maybe the side plate is too tight and is rubbing against the drive gear? There are many things that can interfere with reel movement.
Did u get urs fixed? I'm having similar issue. This is before I even tried cleaning. It hasn't helped..

I use baby wipes for the outside of my reels and rods.
Haven't heard that one but sounds like a good idea. Idk what chemicals are in the wipes or how they would affect the equipment materials, but sounds like you've had no issues. Thanks for the tip!
