How I clean my fishing reel and do regular maintenance

  • Check out my personal blog: www.everylist.com. It's the text version of my channel.
This is how I clean my fishing reel after I go surf fishing. I first spray it with a light spray from a garden hose. Don't use high pressure water as it tends to push sand or dirt into the reel body. Then I let it set for about 24 hours. After it dries, I open the reel body and remove any dirt or sand.
Opening the reel body up to clean it is only necessary if you have a lot of dirt or sand in the reel. Like after you dunk your reel in saltwater or dropped it in the ocean. When you lubricate the reel, it's best to use grease instead of oil; oil tends to be too runny and has a chance to leak out. Regular reel maintenance is key to prevent rust and corrosion.
Usually, I just stop after I rinse my reel and let it dry.
Penn Reel Grease - really good for preventing rust

*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*

Just want to say thank you. I lost my Penn Fierce 8000 to the ocean waves, but luckily another fisherman pulled in my rod/reel after 20 minutes. Needless to say, the reel was inoperable due to all the sand inside. Followed your video and was able to clean, degrease, grease, and use my reel again. Looks good as new!
For those who are wondering, it was my very first time disassembling and reassembling my reel. You can do it!

Just a tip for making salt reels resist saltwater. Once you are done cleaning your reel, let it dry completely. Spray a small amount of Pledge (yea the furniture polish) on a rag and wipe down the outside of the reel. It will not damage any type of line and it puts a very this layer of wax that will cause salt spray to bead off it will only last a trip or two. I do this after every trip.

I’m a newbie angler but a friend bought me a penn fierce 3 combo for my birthday that I really want to take care of well. I’ve already improperly cleaned it twice by blasting water upwards towards the bottom of the reel with the actual intention of getting water into it not knowing that was bad lol.

Very nice video. Just sharing from my experience, 7:44 AR ( anti reverse) bearing/ (roller clutch bearing) cannot be greased. The grease will prevent the roller pins in the AR from moving freely and it eventually will fail due to the pins get stuck in the disengage position. Very oil can be used. Cheers.

Thank you for sharing this video with us. Nevertheless, next time you should avoid 2 things: 1. Don't put so much grease in your reel. Only a thin layer of grease on the gear is enough. 2. Never grease the AR bearing. It will stop working in cold weather and otherwise. 1 drop of low-viscosity oil in it is enough.
    Good luck! 😊

Twice a year. 6 Penn Clash II, 2 Spinfisher Live Liners, 6 Penn Slammer III, 2 Penn Torque, 8 two speed Squalls ( trolling spread), 4 Fathom two speeds conventional reels and break them down at least twice a year for cleaning and lubrication. Be sure to remove old grease and oils instead of adding new to the old. The viscosity and lubricating qualities of old lubrication products break down over time and loose their viscosity.

    • @jayytee8062
      @jayytee8062 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Do Not use acetone for cleaning- only for stainless steel parts. It's not good for plastics, paint etc.
Shellite/naphtha is alot better. Or Wd40 if you have to, as long as the excess is wiped off before applying new lubricants.

See how that Penn grease is separating in the can? NOT GOOD. Look at the oil coming out of suspension. Wrong tool for the job.

Maybe you need a little more grease in their.😂😂😂 fuck it, just tip the whole container into it. Water will stay out and you’ll get a good workout in the long run. Fuck me that a shitload of grease 🤣
