I bought the 2023 version of this vehicle last week. I wanted its reliability, looks and features. I'm a fisherman/hiker and will use it on 4x4 roads, so I don't need good looking rims, heated seats, etc. I think I'm really going to like this vehicle.
LOL - same! Got my 2023 just 3 weeks ago & I love it! Mine has all of that but the dealer had added running boards which is a nice touch for the base model. I don’t have a need to mod it up but since I too want this vehicle to last AT LEAST as long as our other truck (a ‘05 Silverado still going strong at 245k), I might just do a couple of things like fog lights & a power outlet in the bed. Rims? Meh. They work fine 😎. I did add my own after market tonneau cover too (tri fold) and it keeps bed items 99% dry. It’s 100% actually bc the minimal amount of water that has come in, was from small spaces in the truck itself, in the corners. Far too minor to be concerned with IMHO. Thanks for this video! I’m glad to see others totally happy with this model too! New sub here 😊. Karah
Nice video bro. I have the most basic S trim 2023 Frontier in the exact same color as your taco and honestly dude I love it and don’t care about how basic it is. It’s so similar to your SR it’s scary. All I’ve done is paint my steel wheels matte black, window tint and a Tanneau cover. 24500 miles in one year and going strong. Basic truck gang 💪🏽 lol
You can go to the settings and change “tank average fuel economy” to “average fuel economy” which will show your average fuel economy since it has been reset, which in your case would be the life of the truck. Awesome video man. I just got a 2022 magnetic grey double cab v6 4x4 SR. Same exact truck as you, loving it so far.
All your downsides of the truck are things i love. Less electrical parts = less electrical problems. On a side note im 6'2 and it feels great in the driver seat 😎
Just put a deposit on a 2023 SR to replace my 2009 SR5 that is beginning to show signs of old age. For me, a truck is a utility not a status symbol. I needed 4WD capability with at least a 3.5 litre engine and a bed that could carry at least 4x8 sheets of drywall with the tailgate down. The Tacoma satisfies all those requirements…sold.
This video was a great help. Most videos show off their fancy expensive versions but you showed off how the base model still gets the job done. It has its quirks, but if you want a cheap dependable truck then it's a pretty good option.
Glad you enjoyed it! haha yea that's one of the reasons I made this series of videos. I didn't see people putting very much effort into making videos for base models. I'm lovin it so far
I prefer the 4 cylinder. It's a quieter, more refined driving experience (when not accelerating hard) and gets low 20's miles per gallon fuel economy. Far easier to service yourself and far less costly (no direct injection). Lasts literally a lifetime (1,000,000 miles) with perfect maintenance.
Nah 4 cylinder is garbo. my friends 4 cylinder tacoma sounded like the motor was going to blow just trying to get up to cruising speed on the interstate. Wayyy to freaking slow. That motor does not belong in a truck. It will run until the end of time sure but you will be wishing it would die so you can get something you actually enjoy.
Drive what you like, great video.. One tip for you be sure to engage four-wheel-drive (4hi) at least once a month for a mile or two when you know you’re going to be going in a straight line and not over 55 miles an hour, this way your transfer case gears do not seize up from lack of use.
I love my 2019 Toyota Tacoma SR 4X4 Access Cab Long Bed. To me, it was like a blank canvas. I upgraded the floor mats, upgraded wheels, added fog lights, added 4X4 decals, added bug shield, added foot rails, smoked window visors and TACOMA Badges. I bought my truck new on 5 Jan 2019. Paid $26,000.00 and paid in full at the dealership. This price did not include tax, title and license.
I subscribe to a couple of other Tacoma channels but you seem like a very genuine stand-up guy which is why I subscribed to you. I have a 2017 Tacoma SR four-cylinder Access cab that is the same color truck. It was a former certified pre-owned and with tax title license all in, the truck was about 24K with about 24,000 and change on the odometer (it’s still under 27K miles). I have done a dozen or so mods on the truck and still doing more and even with the mods added, my truck is at least at an SR5 level. Adding the cost of all the mods that I’ve put into it, I am still under an SR5 price not to mention paying a lower premium with my insurance company because it is a base SR model. I was laughing (in a good way) with all your negatives that you were itemizing with your truck because quite honestly, that’s what the mods are for and/or make up for. Now, if you are not the type to get your hands dirty or don’t want to work on your truck, then you may just need to grin and bear with any shortcomings you find with the Tacoma. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great truck but with the base model, yes - there are negatives versus higher trim levels that are available. I def look forward to further content.
Thank you man I appreciate it! Your SR sounds awesome. Crazy that with all the mods it's still under SR5's price. What kinds of mods are they? Since you said they were to fix the negatives I listed I mighttt want to look into some of them 😂 I usually am the type to get my hands dirty, but lately that's been more at the computer and not at all with my truck lol, I think eventually I might want to. But for now I'm just going to grin and bear with the shortcomings loll. And glad you're looking forward to future content! I will be posting some more "tech youtuber" style content in the next few videos but I'm going to try to put more time into the entertaining aspects of the video to be interesting to anyone. Eventually I will make another Tacoma update when I feel like it's the right time, hence why I left the end of this video open ended to me possibly doing some mods.
It’s WORTH it. I have the 2021 SR 2.7L In-line 4 banger 4x4 with the black plastic bumper.. (not a fan of it) and it automatically came with “predator tubes” which is cool. and although it’s a slow truck, not so much torque and HP, I have no worries that it’ll leave me stranded or something weird will happen while I’m driving. Also I needed to build credit and it was the only Tacoma at my closest Toyota dealer that had a 4x4 SR access cab model in stock that wouldn’t cost me a fortune to buy so I went with it. If I wanted a much more decked out Tacoma there was only the SR5, TRD pro and limited and I definitely don’t have the money for it. 45-49k is way to pricey. Only changes I made was I changed the tires and rims (255/70/16) Goodyears, got leather seats in it with heating, now I honestly just want to get a keyless entry. I’m planning on paying off this truck and not have a car note. I learned to appreciate it. Before I wanted something cool and fast but I’m realizing more how dependable this truck will be in the long run. Plus I have no kids, and my dog loves to ride shotgun and he fits safely in the front (I got like a harnessed hammock on the passenger seat that I lift up whenever I put him in. I got a lot of crap from dodge boys and ford fans that’s my Tacoma is slow and weak but I can care less what they think because I’m not having to pay a fortune for maintenance and repair. So there’s that!
yep I feel the same! I trust the reliability a lot. And I feel the credit building... I had to get a cosigner because my credit took a plunge over something so stupid... but going through a credit union was the best choice I ever made (2.2% interest!). 45-49k is 100% too expensive for me. Thats awesome that you added leather heated seats! Same, I might do the keyless entry too. And yea, I originally wanted to buy a 2016 C7 Corvette but came to my senses rather quickly 😂 Those dodge boys and ford fans got nothin on you, Tacomas are the best hands down
My previous truck had a V6 and enjoyed driving it more than my 2.7l 4 cylinder, but like you said maintenance and repair are less and cheaper, especially if you are a DIY'er, I'm glad I chose the engine I did.
2021 SR 2.7L double cab 2WD: Tows 5500lbs with fully loaded bed and tool boxes in the back seat 40miles out and back. No issues with transmission heat or engine heat. 4th gear, 3000rpm 60mph. ECT mode
Definitely worth it. Your using the truck for its original intended purpose and not to impress everyone else. I would have purchased one with the long bed but this suits your needs and that’s great.
I bought a 19 Tacoma SR brand new. V6 4x4 With discounts I paid 28k before the pandemic. I have gotten average 23 mpg for the life of the vehicle. I have the really cheap radio which sucks, but it works. That’s what is great, everything just works
Wow you got an amazing deal! Pandemic messed everything up 😂 and you can always upgrade the radio I feel like and you’ll still be like 10k under what I paid 😂 that’s great gas mileage, mine is 16.5 mpg right now, enjoy it man!
I have the exact truck but mine is white…. And I FINALLY got factory TRD off-road rims , for free btw, and I’m telling ya it will makes you fall in love with your truck all over again.
@@mjjauto keep in mind that the TPMS sensor’s on your stock rims probably won’t fit the new rims you get in the future. They didn’t fit the TRD off-road rims I got which I was pretty pissed about so now I have the stupid light on in my dash. They wanted $420 for new sensors installed
Have an sr5 w the i4 and long bed. I bought a peddle commander, had to install a tow hitch and bought a topper w roof racks. 2021 in magnetic gray, and beautiful.
I'm an old man. 65 years old. Bought a used 2011 TRD Off Road in 2013 with 45K miles for $17K. Traded it yesterday for a used 2022 4WD SR Tacoma yesterday (1000 miles.). They gave me $10K for the 2011 with 249,000 miles. (Never had any problems, everything works, doesn't burn oil... did the proper MAINTENANCE...probably go for another 100k...) I like the new Tacoma, basic, stock, SR, no fancy crap, just a solid work vehicle. Probably drive it for 15 years... unless I kick the bucket...
I have the same exact truck, except it’s a 2016. I’ve upgraded to SR5 rims, added intermittent wipers, keyless entry, and upgraded the stereo. I can’t imagine needed anything else and I saved a ton of money
It is an awesome truck, I think eventually I'll start modding, but at the moment just keeping it stock feels like the right move for me. What kinds of mods have you done so far?
I have a 2016 TRD Sport, and I absolutely love it. It is my 2nd Toyota truck that I have owned, and I would not want any other brand. I have and will only do modest mods, I think it's pretty darn sweet right from the factory.
I was looking into the TRD Sport when I was going to buy one but it was out of my price range. Those things look amazing from the factory. And I agree, best brand for sure!
I have a 2007 Tacoma, crew cab, 4x4, TRD. 155K miles. 4.0 V6, 21 miles city / 24 HW. Use iridium plugs, K&N air filter, clean the Mass Air flow sensor every 6 mths. Clean the Throttle body once a yrs. to include Ox. sensors. Most important, tire pressure. Have carried OVER a ton of rocks, dirt with no problem. (skip loader has no weight scale) end result on purchase slip. This is my third Tacoma in 30 yrs. 1st, 1999 ran it 365K, trade in for, (second truck new off lot) was hit head on but drunk driver. Purchased third USED with 92K miles. Tacoma, in my opinion is the best truck on the planet. don't care about all that new electronic stuff. Tacoma was originally made for work not showing off. You will not be disappointed if you buy one. Buy something 2015 or before if you want a work truck. Anything newer has to much, to much electronic gadgets and they will give you problems and head aches. My friend has a 2023 been in the shop for electrical problems. Just saying.
I have the same SR model truck, except mine is a 2021. Same color, options, etc. It does exactly what I want it to do, and it does those things well. I did, however, install the seat jackers on the driver’s seat. That was a noticeable improvement. I found your video entertaining; very good editing, flow, and content. Good job, and enjoy the truck.
I have a 22 Toyota Tacoma nightshade only mod so far leveled and I love it. Any Tacoma is great just take care of it and the truck will take care of you. Plus resale value is there in case you decide to sell it.
I bought exact same truck 2021 model. I did change the rims and installed the back flip tonneau cover. Other than that I'm leaving it as is, lift kit, no bigger tires. . It's not our primary vehicle so I didn't care about the leather, heated / cooled power seats, fog lights or push button / remote start. People who keep up the maintenance on these have them for 300K+ miles. I dont follow the 10k miles oil change.. I do Every 5K or 6 months... My tacoma hasn't gotten driven much,.. Only has 6K miles and have already had oil changed 3 times.
I just got the same truck and color but I got the SR5 in September of 2022. It was MSRP for 38 & some change but they added close to 5% above due to the shortage out here in California even though it comes from Baja MX, so it was 44 out the door. I Just got my front windows tinted today but my vehicle don't have four wheel drive, I add running boards and Gator soft cover but I take it to the car wash almost every other day since I have a membership with unlimited car washes and I get a lot of compliments on my truck. My Toyota came with the black rims and it makes a big difference on the truck, I just got some cheap mods like the LED lights for the interior I'll probably get LED headlights and bigger tires but not for a couple years. I like the way your trucks look too because it's got the four wheel drive make sure you use it at least 10 minutes a month to exercise it in the right off-road conditions or down the road it will give you problems at least that's what Scotty Kilmer (mechanic)of TH-cam says . You know what sucks I had some teenage girl just hit my car 2 weeks ago and knock of driver side side mirror give me a couple scratches, which has lead to other problems trying to get it fixed only then led to bigger paint problems that I'm dealing with right now got to take it in to get an estimate or take it back to the paint shop place. Which I really don't want them to touch it since they screwed it up last time by not matching up the paint properly it's a little lighter doesn't have the darker metallic match so I can tell but my wife keeps telling me no it looks like it right...yeah right just be happy you don't have that problem like me...good videos man.
Unlimited car washes sounds like a good idea! I’m not consistent with my washing at all. And thanks for that tip about 10 mins of 4x4 once a month, I’ll make sure to do that. And wow. That’s so annoying I hope that girl paid up! Definitely happy I don’t have to deal with that. But good luck man, praying you don’t have to deal with those issues much longer
Enjoyed the video. You got some good editing skills. I had a 2019 Tacoma SR Access Cab V6 that I loved. It was a real nice truck that met my needs for a truck. The mods I did on the truck were useful. 1. Bet mat 2. Hard bed cover 3. Bed lights 4. Mud flaps 5. Replaced the mirrors with a unit with a built in blind spot mirror 6. Tacoma floor mats 7. Clove box and console organizer 8. Interior led lighting 9. LED back up lights I changed jobs which required me to drive 85 miles round trip, so I did sell it so I could buy a Camry Hybrid. Hopefully in the near future I will get another SR model Tacoma. Note: I actually like the steel wheels on the Tacoma.
Thank you man! Those are all very functional mods, I might pickup a bed mat at some point, very slippery in the back. Blind spot mirror sounds interesting too. And ah, that sucks man, but the decision is well justified. Let me know if you ever pick another one up! Glad at least one person likes the rims 😂 They do have a nice charm to them, industrial look
Just bought my second SR. First one was 2017 4 cyl. Second one is 6cyl, 4x4. I don't need off roading extras. I love my truck. No regrets. I wanted the actual key! The MPG reset thing is annoying though.
I recently purchased a 2020 Access cab 2.7 4x4 in same color. I traded a 2007 Pre runner 4x2 with the v-6 with leather interior. Nice but no 4x4. The 2.7 is fine. I don't tow anything. The gas mileage is 23 around town, I am 6 miles out. I love the tech & old school cruise lever location. simple. I have a solid folding bed cover. The back has no seats, but is not an issue as it's just my wife & I. My only complaint is the pickup sits up high nut still have to duck my head getting in and out. Otherwise is a great reliable pickup.
Just bought a 2022 SR and man I’m excited to start customizing. I am like you in the sense that I don’t need fancy stuff or bells and whistles. This thing will be perfect for what I need and what I’ll be doing. Also, I just subscribed!
I actually got a set of the black spare wheels with all the holes in them because I think that looks even more rugged than the branded steel rims. Just waiting till I need new tires to put them on. Literally the cheapest steel wheels you could possibly get are the ones I think look best. I think I’m doing this opposite of everyone else 😂
subbed because this video was put together immaculately. I am looking for a truck so i had this video on my recommended. This has to be by far the best truck/car review pro con video i’ve ever watched. I usually skip through a video but i genuinely enjoyed everyone minute of the vid.
I really appreciate that man. This made my day. I'm going to be venturing a little away from Tacoma videos into the realm of computers (not too technical, very broad scope), hope you'll enjoy those as well, will be a little more fast paced and story based
@@blacktopbuckets loll nahhhh 😂 I’m workin on a vid rn, something big that I’ve acquired in my personal life. It’s taking a long time to film and edit, hope to have it out in the next 2 weeks. ~ 1 vid a month is the only schedule I can keep if I wanna put out the quality I want. Thanks for checking in tho bro 👊🏽
I have the same truck and I am using it for 6 months without any problem. I spend additional 10K of aftermarket accessories to make the truck a little rugged and I am very happy. Getting this truck for less than 20K compare to TRD pro. I think i had a best buy.
Thank you for this excellent video. I used to buy Ford Rangers, but OMG, I love my Toyota SR Tacoma purchase. The engineers at Toyota set the cab up perfectly for the driver and passengers. I will drive the wheels off this vehicle and then put some more on it. It will last forever.
I've actually bought a 2021 sr and have lifted it and done plenty of things to it. You can install fog lights like factory...where the switch is in the turn signal stalk. Actually very plug and play with no wire cutting or drilling. Hit me up if you wanna know how -SR gang
I had to let my 2004 Tundra Double Cab LTD with 300,000 go, even though all the systems & accessories still worked, because of frame rot even though it was part of the Tundra frame recall campaign because it rotted from the inside-out. At the end if May 2023 I drove home with the Tacoma SR 7514 model, Access Cab, 6' bed, 2.7L 4 cylinder engine, 4×4. At 73 years old, I went from all the bells & whistles to no bells & whistles & I'm totally happy & getting 25.5 mpg. I installed a BAK Revolver X4s hard rollup tonneau cover & that's all I will do regarding mod's. That little engine spins at 1,900 at 70 mph, whereas the Tundra spun at 2,300 rpm. What's not to like?
I have almost the same SR, just a slightly lighter color, and V4 non 4wd. I like it. I did exchange the steel rims for black aftermarket rims. It's almost shocking how much nicer it looks just from changing the rims out, completely changed it from an old man truck to something that looks pretty cool, even to my son, no need for other mods to alter the appearance. The steel wheels make it look like a truck from the 90s. I changed the interior bulbs to LEDs, which improves visibility, and someday I plan to install fog lights, because they make driving on rainy nights easier.
Super fun video! '22 SR5 I4 4WD Access cab long bed here. I consider most of your "cons" as "neutrals". But then I'm also comfortable with technical mods as I've done plenty on motorcycles and refurbished several cars, so those LED bar light screws would have gone into my parts bins, not the trash🤪 I agree with you about the look of our trucks; Clean stock lines (no fake scoops or extreme bumpers, etc.) and just the right ground clearance. I particularly enjoy the SR5 rims which match the body color on mine. As a used purchase I really snagged a rare gem with low milage. Never letting go of it. As for you rims I'd say "own that with pride", but if you got color-matched spray primer/paint rattle cans and did a proper job cleaning them you can upgrade the look for modest money. Black or chrome would also look slick. Keep the videos coming, you're very good at this.
Great review! During Covid, I had a 2022 Tacoma TRD off road premium with leather and sunroof on order for 6 months. It never came in due to chip shortages so I cancelled it. Ended up finding a 2023 Tacoma SR double cab v6 4x4 in stock for 33k and bought it. Drove that truck for 2000 miles and loved it but it had a few odd issues that Toyota couldn't fix so they had to buy it back. Don't worry, this was very unusual. While my new truck was staying at Toyota trying to diagnose the issues, they put me in a 2022 TRD Sport 4x4 with cloth interior. When they finally realized, they couldn't fix my SR, they offered to trade me up. A 2023 TRD Sport 4x4 premium came in. I drove to the dealership in the loaner 2022 TRD Sport with cloth and my wife and I neither one liked how hard the leather seats were. The sunroof was small and really cut down on headroom so we decided we didn't want that truck. I have to say the loaner TRD sport with cloth was definitely the most comfortable seats between all the ones I drove. Only big negative was the TRD Sport rode so much worse that the SR. Even on a smooth road, it always felt bouncy where the SR ride was just so smooth. I'm sure this has to do with the bilstein shocks on all TRDs where the SR, SR5 and limited don't have them. Cost wasn't my biggest concern but when it came time to order the replacement, I ended up ordering another 2023 Tacoma SR doublecab 4x4 V6. I considered the SR5 for the few extra features but at the end of the day, the SR just does everything we need. I have spent about $2000 in accessories(TRD off road wheel & tire takeoffs,TRD pro grill, hard bed cover, black out emblems, off road step bars, tinted windows and oem bed mat) and it looks in my opinion very close to the more expensive ones and i'm all in for 35k. May not be for everyone but my plan is to give this truck to my almost 12 year old to drive when he turns 16 and hopefully, he can drive it through high school and college. It's a Toyota so I don't believe that should be a problem.
Love the wheels! I have the same and they have grown on me. No need to like everyone else. I had step bars factory installed and I added a cheap bed cover. eBay had some cool hitch covers. Keep on truckin! I have a Barcelona red SR and love it.
For off road specific cons: -Thin frame / subframe , weak spindle and weak coil over mounts (they can bend easy). They make a lot of aftermarket weld on reinforcements for these issues. -power steering rack. Big time fail point. With bigger tires and off road abuse it will fail. Need to upgrade to a tundra or land cruiser steering rack ($$) -the cab mount needs to be cut off the frame rails and re welded further back in order to clear bigger tires Rear axes , good. Engine/ trans ok for off road abuse.
You should have been the one to make this video 😂 the information is much appreciated for me and others reading through these comments, thank you! I do plan on doing some off roading, there are some nice places to go in southern Virginia (~2-4 hours from me)
I just found your channel. Great review! Very honest and true review. I just bought a 2023 Tacoma SR 4x2 4 cyl Access Cab today! It will be here next week. I used to sell new Toyota’s years ago, and even back then, the Tacoma’s were very popular, mostly the base model with the 4 cyl, so I knew what I wanted already. I don’t haul big stuff or a lot of stuff, but it will definitely come in handy if I do. I had a 2000 Ford Explorer XLT and I loved it! It did everything I needed it to do and I had a 5x8 utility Trailer I pulled with it for those times I needed to haul something. It only had 147k miles on it, but unfortunately, something broke inside the motor, I still don’t know what it was, or why it broke since I take very good care of my vehicles, but the price for a new motor was too expensive for me to put in a 23 year old vehicle and I didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a new fully loaded truck with an outrageous payment, so the Tacoma was perfect! It’s reliability and Toyota’s warranty and finance options made this truck perfect for my needs and budget!
Dude, not sure why your channel is not bigger than it is but you should post more. You got good vibes and good edits. Btw - thanks for being real and honest on your experience. Truly helps.
I bought mine is the exact same model but I use it for work I put In about 6k miles I'm a month and a half honestly with how hard I use it and carrying corrosive chemicals I'm the back (I own a pool cleaning company) the resilience that it has also including a bed liner it's been amazing for me I can get easy 35mpg on the highway with the radar cruise control for a work truck that's actually making me the money back I feel like it was a great investment anything fancier would get trashed and the other choice I wanted was a Ford maverick for fuel economy but it was impossible to find at msrp Great video 📹
I purchased a 23 SR5 memorial day. traded in my honda accord 23 hybrid sport that I had for 2 months. Wifey Going hiking every morning with our new Husky/shepherd that we got 2weeks after the accord wasnt working out. 3rd Yota ,and love it for the most part minus the info screen operation comparison to the light year advancement in the Honda😢 101 miles and counting
I'm old and I plan to keep my 2022 TRD Sport for 20 years so I baby the crap out of it. That said, it makes a tear come to my eye when I see all the scratches you have (inside and out) on a $37k trunk after only 4 months. I'm assuming with you being young its the party vehicle for you and your friends.
I should be more like you... and tbh, no I don't really have a lot of people in my car all the time 😂 I'm sorry for causing your tears man! I'll do better at maintaining going forwards because I also want to keep it for a long time. But I'm mostly interested in preserving the engine and transmission, scratches here and there don't bother me very much
Since your Taco is a 4WD, once a month Engage your 4WD for about 3 or so miles. If you don’t, your 4WD system can “gum” up and not work correctly. During our very snowy winter months my Taco is in 4WD most of the time. We live in a very mountainous area of north central Washington state and 5 miles from town, so once a month other than the winter, I engage the 4WD system just to keep everything moving smoothly.
I have the exact SR same colour and rims, but mine is a 2021 and I do have heated seats and dual climate control. I think I'm a Canadian version of you I'm simple and not flashy and the SR does everything I need. Basically, it's my daily driver, and it can do more when I need it. Thanks.
I have the same truck but silver. That is awesome!! Same as you. Your touch screen should show you your MPG stats. Also has to be in park, you change settings for your front display. Can can give Ave speed to all other sorts of driving stats.
The difference between 4hi and 4low is important to know if you ever plan on using them. 4hi is for lighter terrain and allows for speeds generally up to 45 mph. If you can go 35, you probably don't need to be in 4hi. Snowy roads, rough gravel road 4Low is for when your vehicle is stuck or about to go through very heavy terrain. It is very speed limited and geared for more torque. Most vehicles aren't intended to be in 4 low for prolonged periods of driving. You should never be in either on a clean road. It can break the 4wd system. You need to make sure there's something for the wheels to have to "go through" so to speak.
@@mig4868 Depends on how rough the terrain is. I would start in 4 hi if it's a dry trail. If you know it's going to be very muddy, you might start in 4 low just to be safe. I try not to be in 4 low for a long time as it puts a strain on a lot of the components of the vehicle and makes turning difficult.
Since you have the V6 (and yes I’ve done the same mods to my 23 TRD Off Road double cab V6), Install a K&N cold air intake (or at least a K&N air filter), FlowMaster FlowFX exhaust and an Overland Tailor Tune. These 3 mods will set you back about $2500-$3K, maybe. These 3 mod’s will Increase your horsepower, torque (range) and your mpg. They will Not void your warranty. The OTT, will STOP your transmission from “hunting” for the right gear. I’ve already reached out to Katzkin and they’re making me TRD Re Leather seat covers with black trim and stitching. After they remove my factory Black leather and replace them with the TRD Red Leather, my buddy (who also has a 23 TRD) has bought my black leather and will have it installed in his Taco, since he has gray cloth seats. After that is complete I’m having my White Tacoma 2 toned in Barcelona Red metallic following the body lines of my truck. I’ll also have it pinstriped. I have installed some interior trim pieces in TRD Red. The final mod will be choosing the right wheels for my Taco. I know that you said you can’t afford to put any mods into your Taco, but the fist 3 will pay for themselves in the long run. Enjoy your Tacoma. It’s my opinion that the 3rd Generation is the best
I didn't know either tbh, and yea thats basically what it is just without keyless entry, push start, automatic seats, and a power rear window. Technically a "work truck"
Let’s put it this way: the truck I’ve been driving since 1991 is a 1967 F100. It has hand crank windows, no power steering, no power brakes, a bench seat that slides forward and back, no storage compartments, a cigarette lighter, no A/C, a heater that’s on or off, and will pass nearly anything but a gas station. The SR I just bought is positively luxurious. I still have the Ford, BTW. She’s just getting a restoration.
Keep the original rims. When you get new tires. Then get a little more of an aggressive tread with a little taller sidewall and it will look beastly. Rims are a waste of good money that could go into a lot of tasteful subtle mods to set your ride off. That truck will last you for years if taken care of.
Just bought a '23 SR. Mine has the TSS offroad black package which changed the wheels/tires and added a step rail and a few other accent pieces. So far the only thing I wish it had was fog lights, but because I *am* going to do some modifications to mine this isnt a big deal and a couple lights are an easy remedy. Glad I have all those empty switch locations to add what I need later. Well made video though
I have a ‘23 SR, but it’s the TSS off-road, which is only available in certain states I think. It just has better wheels & tires basically. I love it so far, but I was shocked how bad the MPG is.
Miles per gallon. Reset the trip mileage to 0 at fill up. Next time you get gas, divide the miles driven, off the trip meter, by how many gallons you put in. Example, 250 miles driven, divided ➗️ by 15 gallons= 16.6 mpg. Easy day. The mpg on you dash is usually optimistic anyway.
Ah, I honestly never thought of doing that manually 😂 I've gotten in the habit of not doing math outside of work. But thank you! I'll give it a try next time I get gas
I have a 2022 TRD Off-Road, and tbh, most of the blank buttons don't get much use. I really think I personally would be better off with an SR or SR5 for most people, they really make you reach to get things like a locking rear diff and a power adjustable (and power height adjustable) drivers seat. Mine still doesn't have GPS, but it does have cool rims at least :)
I just bought a 17 off rd edition 6 ft bed with access cab with 28k miles. I love it. Came with a leer hard bed top and I put on a new grill, bull bar and sliders. It's a great truck I use it for my landscaping buisness.
By the way, 4Hi is for driving in situations where you have more traction. For example: driving through a field in the country. 4Lo is for driving in situations where you have less traction. For example: in mud, or in the sand.
Not sure where you’re at but you can get a 2023 trd off road for $42 or less.( In NY) You get soooooo much more and now more than ever as they are trying to make room for the 2024 4L turbos !
I have a 2012 Tacoma Sport and it is a good truck, but I prefer a stick and I have a problem with the 5ft. box, bought it used with low miles. It has a 4.0 in it.
Subscribing because you’re chill and stuff. I have a TRD off road, and only didn’t go lower because I wanted the locker. I’ve done a lot of modifications, but I’ve attempted to make sure none of them change the look except the rock sliders.
Your overall MPG should be on your touch screen, if you go to the trip information screen, there is a button that says "History," that will be your total average MPG since the last time it was reset. As for the point of your video, mine is a 4x2 Access Cab SR, so even more base model than yours, and I love it. Most of your cons to me are pros, I don't need all that stuff. Totally worth it for me, I'm so glad i went with the SR.
First off I would have sworn your subscriber count would have been 50k plus with the quality of the video! I really enjoyed it! Second, I recently purchased the 22 sr5 which is currently my second Tacoma I still own (first being an 06 trd off-road with 315k on the dash) and third tacoma all together and I think it’s a huge step up from the sr in my opinion and fixes a lot of your complaints with the sr and I absolutely love mine! It’s an awesome truck man and I hope you have many many years of enjoyment and welcome to the Tacoma family 😁
Thank you man! It took a while to make my last 2 videos but I’m much more proud of the quality and am gonna continue posting ~ 1 vid a month and keep the quality up. Wow, 3 tacomas! I would love to have a higher trim, maybe one day. But I do love my SR and want to keep it forever! Thank you again man, hope you enjoy yours too!
@@mjjauto man I love my tacos! That first one is what made me a true fan. They are such a well built truck! That sr will last you however long you feel like driving it! Just change the oil every 5k miles and your set!
and about the sr or the other trims id say getting the sr was a great decision because all the other trims really have, are different suspension types. the fogs suck, the outlet in the bed sucks because its only 400 watts which isn't enough juice to power my garage door opener. all of those blank switches you can add, like you can add better fogs and use the blank to add a switch that looks stock for it, this truck is pretty much starts from scratch and you get to add your own personality to it. it's an expensive hobby but fun one once you start going off roading or camping, for the outlet just get a 1000-watt power inverter and now you have an outlet with more watts than the stock Tacoma has. the offroad and the trd Tacoma's suspensions aren't all that to brag about, with a couple grand you can get a better one, pretty much all the money you saved getting a sr and not a pro you can use to upgrade this truck to something better
lolll well I don't feel bad about not having the bed outlet anymore 😂 and interesting, I didn't know I could add to it. You mightve just convinced me to start doing some mods...
I know I'm late to conversation. Hats off to you for being a SR purist. However, consider at least a Bilstein suspension upgrade. I have TRD OR shock and spring take offs. Worlds of difference in daily driving and limits suspension fatigue. I have the SR5. Upgraded parts don't make us a TRD wannabe. The TRD line is well made. Our trucks are modular from the factory and honestly we just bought a cheaper model. So TRD parts are complimentary to your truck.
I had a 2015 SR5 4x4. It was great and I really miss the 6ft bed. Have since moved to a TRD Sport and and trading in for a TRD Off Road…. I do like the extra features but definitely don’t really need half of them. If you are deciding to keep your current truck, do the mods you want and nothing else. The only things that I’ve added have been storage stuff ( I’m always outdoors) and am looking in to getting a Decked system
That’s good advice. Still haven’t added any mods besides what was in this video. I’m thinking about adding keyless entry though, if I do I’ll be sure to make a video about it. Thanks!
I love the simplicity of it. I prefer key in the ignition, I want manual sliding glass, and I want an AWD V6 access cab. The rims will be changed, probably gonna get bigger wheels. And that will be it. I love it
Wow! You are hard on your truck! lol All the chips, scratches, damage to the interior is the kind of things I don't see after 10 years of ownership. But it's okay, it's your truck and I'm not bashing you, was just surprised at how much after just 4 months. 😁 I just picked up a 2023 SR double cab 4x4 Taco myself. Got the Ice Cap (white) paint that most likely will be recalled as it's so bad. But hoping Toyota paints it right when it's time.
Yea I'm going to be looking in to the settings of the averaging because mine still changes a lot, someone mentioned the steps to fix my problem in another comment
I have the sr5 with basically everything but the 4x4. Power seats, power black window, side steps visors, v6, bed cover, etc but I don’t have the 4x4 option lol I got mine brand new out the dealer for 38000 and some change.
I bought the 2023 version of this vehicle last week. I wanted its reliability, looks and features. I'm a fisherman/hiker and will use it on 4x4 roads, so I don't need good looking rims, heated seats, etc. I think I'm really going to like this vehicle.
I think you will too bro, congrats!
You will love it
Karah
Same here. Got a 2023 SR 4x4 v6 last week. Truck is great. Fits my needs!
@@JournalofaWarriorsJourney what kind of tonneau cover did you buy? How much versus the Toyota one?
Thank you so much bro 😂 It annoys me so much when I go to get gas. Thanks man! and no way thats crazy 😂 amazing truck, are you planning any mods?
@@mjjautoYou take care of that vehicle you can have it for a long time I clean all my vehicles every weekend
All your downsides of the truck are things i love. Less electrical parts = less electrical problems.
On a side note im 6'2 and it feels great in the driver seat 😎
The editing and production is HIGH quality for such a small channel! Keep this up man!
Thank you man! Going to try my best!
Ah that’s a good point. I just wanted the V6 because of snow/ice in the winters and being able to take it off roading in the future

Listen to this guy! If you never use your 4hi and the gears seize, it can be an expensive fix!
Am I supposed to shift into 4WD 4hi when it’s already in drive or is it safe to do when in park?
@@ashleypayne6711 you can shift while driving (shift on the fly)
Do it on a straight td and not over 50 mph for a minute or two
This is literally what I would get. The base model so really appreciate you uploading this bro ! I just was a cool reliable truck
Glad you appreciate it! The SR model has it's downsides, but still an amazing truck and needs to be recognized just like the SR5 and above
Awesome mods man, and a great price! glad you're enjoying it
I subscribe to a couple of other Tacoma channels but you seem like a very genuine stand-up guy which is why I subscribed to you.
Great choice, no BS, just do what you need it for. And I can see you pretty enjoying your life out there.
It was a good choice for sure, and yes I am, hope you are too!
I bought a Pro earlier this year. Yes, they're way too pricey. also, it's really stupid that they only come in short beds.
yep I feel the same!
The #1 issue with the truck is the automatic transmission and that is the sole reason I did not keep mine.
2021 SR 2.7L double cab 2WD:
Tows 5500lbs with fully loaded bed and tool boxes in the back seat 40miles out and back. No issues with transmission heat or engine heat. 4th gear, 3000rpm 60mph. ECT mode
Wow you’re working that truck! Awesome to hear! These trucks are the best
Definitely worth it. Your using the truck for its original intended purpose and not to impress everyone else. I would have purchased one with the long bed but this suits your needs and that’s great.
100%, and for me the short bed has worked perfectly since I have straps for holding things down, and the back seats have been super nice to have
FYI on 6ft bed. Double cab and SR kills your chance of finding 6ft bed. I tried for a year!
I’ve had my Barcelona red SR for 3 months and love it. I don’t plan on doing much to it. The SR stands alone as is
That's definitely one of my favorite red colors on a car, not to bright, but still pops. I feel you there. Enjoy!
You don't need to mod it just enjoy it the way it is we never used to mod our original Toyota puckup back in 1976 in California when I was growing up
I bought a 19 Tacoma SR brand new.
I'm waiting a little while to upgrade them, once I get tired of the stock rims I'll upgrade
Magnetic grey is the best!
I didn't realize you can add keyless entry, how much does that cost to add?
@@mjjauto I want to say it was about $200, maybe a little less
I have the 2019 SR. Beauty of buying a stock truck is customizing and modding everything to your liking. Its an awesome truck.
It is an awesome truck, I think eventually I'll start modding, but at the moment just keeping it stock feels like the right move for me. What kinds of mods have you done so far?
Got mine April 1st. I already have 13k miles. It’s the little 4cyl, I haul my MTB everywhere in it. I love it
Danggg you drive a lot, I’m still under 5k. Glad you’re enjoying it!
The quality of this video so much better than some of the bigger content creators. Keep up the good work.
SR is a smart choice. Smart color… wears well easy to color match if needed.. good luck
I do
Every 5K or 6 months...
You got ripped man I picked up the same truck in October for 33,283 including license and fees.
still have no regrets lol congrats tho! that is a great price
Enjoyed the video. You got some good editing skills. I had a 2019 Tacoma SR Access Cab V6 that I loved. It was a real nice truck that met my needs for a truck. The mods I did on the truck were useful.
1. Bet mat
2. Hard bed cover
3. Bed lights
4. Mud flaps
5. Replaced the mirrors with a unit with a built in blind spot mirror
6. Tacoma floor mats
7. Clove box and console organizer
8. Interior led lighting
9. LED back up lights
I changed jobs which required me to drive 85 miles round trip, so I did sell it so I could buy a Camry Hybrid.
I feel the same! and I figured out how to turn off the resetting in the settings
I have this exact same spec. 22 SR, 4x4, V6, metallic grey, it’s beautiful
Hell yeaaa, it is beautiful, enjoy it!
I own a 2022 Frontier and I still watched your whole video, you made a very interesting “real life” review!
Thank you man! I appreciate it 🙌
These trucks are borderline indestructible obviously when taken care of. My dad has a 2007 Tacoma with 320000 miles and it still drives real well.
Yes definitely when taken care of. That’s how long I want mine! Road to 1,000,000 miles!
I love the truck just how it is. I love the rims too. People just don’t get it and that’s ok. Keep it up bro
Same! and thank you I'll try my best bro 👊
Steely rims just look right on a pickup!
I am looking for a truck so i had this video on my
recommended. This has to be by far the best truck/car review pro con video i’ve ever watched. I usually skip through a video but i genuinely enjoyed everyone minute of the vid.
I really appreciate that man. This made my day. I'm going to be venturing a little away from Tacoma videos into the realm of computers (not too technical, very broad scope), hope you'll enjoy those as well, will be a little more fast paced and story based
@@dickg6312 very stimky videos for sure, I’ll take your advice 🚶🏽♂️
@@mjjauto I noticed you haven't made any videos since, I hope it wasn't actually cause of this clown. (I doubt it was) but nah this video was great.
I bought a new 2020 Sr 4x4 2.7 for 27500 out the door . No complaints as you said . I get 22/26 for gas mileage. I drive slow
I got a 2022 sr last week love it for work so far.
Awesome man, great truck for sure
I have the same truck and I am using it for 6 months without any problem. I spend additional 10K of aftermarket accessories to make the truck a little rugged and I am very happy. Getting this truck for less than 20K compare to TRD pro. I think i had a best buy.
Glad you’re enjoying it! 10K of accessories is a lot, I bet it looks like a beast. Definitely a steal compared to the TRD pro
Thank you for watching man! Toyota does make great trucks. And same I’m planning on doing the same!
I just ordered the 23 SR and Yes I’m kinda like you I don’t need a bunch of features, just a truck to work in and be able to haul stuff if I need too
Thanks for the shout out.. video took time but was great 👍
lollll ofc man thanks for commenting! keep pointing out my stupidity and I'll most likely shout you out again 😂
I've actually bought a 2021 sr and have lifted it and done plenty of things to it. You can install fog lights like factory...where the switch is in the turn signal stalk. Actually very plug and play with no wire cutting or drilling. Hit me up if you wanna know how
-SR gang
Thanks for the tip man! I’ll let you know! I have been thinking about fog lights cause I don’t like how there’s a cut out but no lights
What's not to like?
all you need is a nice looking set of black wheels and some chunky A/T tires and it would look so much better
I'm getting a 2023 Limited in 2 mo ths. Can't wait for it to arrive.
ayeeeee, the limited is so sexy, congrats!
Have this exact truck, I put a topper on mine, gonna get rims next.
Awesome bro! Rims have been on my mind lately too…
I have almost the same SR, just a slightly lighter color, and V4 non 4wd.
For off road specific cons:
-Thin frame / subframe , weak spindle and weak coil over mounts (they can bend easy). They make a lot of aftermarket weld on reinforcements for these issues.
-power steering rack. Big time fail point. With bigger tires and off road abuse it will fail. Need to upgrade to a tundra or land cruiser steering rack ($$)
-the cab mount needs to be cut off the frame rails and re welded further back in order to clear bigger tires
Rear axes , good.
Sounds like you're using up every inch of the truck! That's awesome man! and thank you I appreciate it 👍
I put some 80 dollar rim hiders off eBay and it was the best decision ever!!
Have the exact same same truck. Just in black and it came with the unessessary side steps
But I'm mostly interested in preserving the engine and transmission, scratches here and there don't bother me very much
@@mjjautoscratches are fine. It’s a truck. Just make sure to repair paint damage so that cosmetic flaws don’t turn into functional damage (rust).
Ayeeeee, hypeee! I did figure out how to change the MPG stats in settings, thanks for the tips bro!
The difference between 4hi and 4low is important to know if you ever plan on using them.
4hi is for lighter terrain and allows for speeds generally up to 45 mph. If you can go 35, you probably don't need to be in 4hi. Snowy roads, rough gravel road
4Low is for when your vehicle is stuck or about to go through very heavy terrain. It is very speed limited and geared for more torque. Most vehicles aren't intended to be in 4 low for prolonged periods of driving.
You should never be in either on a clean road. It can break the 4wd system. You need to make sure there's something for the wheels to have to "go through" so to speak.
Thanks for the info! I'm hoping to use them soon if there's snow and ice. Going to make sure I use them in the correct setting. Appreciate it!
Which one would you use for trails?
@@mig4868 Depends on how rough the terrain is. I would start in 4 hi if it's a dry trail. If you know it's going to be very muddy, you might start in 4 low just to be safe. I try not to be in 4 low for a long time as it puts a strain on a lot of the components of the vehicle and makes turning difficult.
Since you have the V6 (and yes I’ve done the same mods to my 23 TRD Off Road double cab V6),
Install a K&N cold air intake (or at least a K&N air filter), FlowMaster FlowFX exhaust and an Overland Tailor Tune.
Didn't know this configuration was available in the SR. This truck can easily pass as an SR5 with new wheels.
She’s just getting a restoration.
yea compared to the previous truck I drove this SR is very luxurious, great truck! Enjoy it!
@@mjjauto Yeah, 3 weeks later, I’m still loving it. I’m with you, too, I love the steel wheels. I’m keeping them on👍
Keep the original rims. When you get new tires. Then get a little more of an aggressive tread with a little taller sidewall and it will look beastly. Rims are a waste of good money that could go into a lot of tasteful subtle mods to set your ride off. That truck will last you for years if taken care of.
That’s a great idea, and I plan on keeping it forever so I’m definitely going to take care of it. First oil change soon! Thanks for the tips!
Appreciate it..I'm new to the Toyota Tacoma truck stuff..I just bought a2023 2wd
I have a ‘23 SR, but it’s the TSS off-road, which is only available in certain states I think. It just has better wheels & tires basically. I love it so far, but I was shocked how bad the MPG is.
Good video. I've had my 2021 SR Access cab V6 for a year now and still love it. I've hauled some heavy loads and it's done great.
Thanks Prepper! Yea the V6 does the job, awesome trucks
@@mjjauto use your calculator on your phone.
@@grayghost1423 that is something I could do
I have a 2022 TRD Off-Road, and tbh, most of the blank buttons don't get much use. I really think I personally would be better off with an SR or SR5 for most people, they really make you reach to get things like a locking rear diff and a power adjustable (and power height adjustable) drivers seat. Mine still doesn't have GPS, but it does have cool rims at least :)
TRD Off-road is an awesome trim, GPS isn't really needed since we have our phones for that lol, enjoy those nice rims bro 😂
Ah so I did use it correctly, thank you! and what would 4Low be for?
Hey thanks for your honesty I was looking at buying a SR V6 4x4. I'll just start looking for TRD Pro.
The ECT power button is basically a tow/haul mode for the Tacoma
Great video! Just bought the 2023 version!
Very helpful review from a reasonably affordable trim of pick-up
Thank you! And yes, reasonably affordable is a good way of putting it
Not sure where you’re at but you can get a 2023 trd off road for $42 or less.( In NY) You get soooooo much more and now more than ever as they are trying to make room for the 2024 4L turbos !
I have a 2012 Tacoma Sport and it is a good truck, but I prefer a stick and I have a problem with the 5ft. box, bought it used with low miles. It has a 4.0 in it.
Yep I’m like you! I don’t need the bells & whistles, just a reliable 4x4! 14:19
I love it
No off road vehicle should have bigger wheels than 17 inches unless it’s a heavy duty diesel.
By the end of your tank it tells you what you have been averaging. I would imagine it gets to a point the number doesn’t change as much
Yea I'm going to be looking in to the settings of the averaging because mine still changes a lot, someone mentioned the steps to fix my problem in another comment
An honest review. Well done!
thank you brotha!
I have the sr5 with basically everything but the 4x4. Power seats, power black window, side steps visors, v6, bed cover, etc but I don’t have the 4x4 option lol I got mine brand new out the dealer for 38000 and some change.
Definitely nice to have power seats and window along with side steps and a v6! I didn't know there was an option to have the v6 without 4x4
