This is why the first Saw will always be one of my favorite movies. It's like Whannel and Wan said: It's a thriller set in a horror universe. It's not flawless but it's still friggen awesome!
This was a great analysis! I especially liked your point about the victims being the focal point and sympathetic. That seems to be a preferred approach for Leigh Whannell. Not only is that the exact way he chose to make The Invisible Man story feel fresh, you also see this with the victims in Saw III moreso than the later sequels that he wasn't involved with. We don't know much about Troy, but we spend the majority of the first act of the movie with Kerry, learning about her emotional state in the time since the previous movie. Then we see Jeff's game and not only is he written very sympathetically, but the three people he attempts to save are all presented as a lot more human than most throwaway victims in later films, even the drunk driver. We see his feelings of guilt and anguish, which is a pretty stark contrast to Saw IV where the people who die in Rigg's game are a sex trafficer who would rather kill than be arrested, a rapist, an abusive father and husband, and a corrupt lawyer, none of whom are really humanized beyond those traits.
The first saw movie is great because its not just a gore fest, its the phycological horror when the movie (even if it directly tells you what will happen) keeps you thinking "what if?" And the anticipation of things like having Dr.Gordan saw off his own foot (as apose to a violent trap that will kill you in one minieut) gives the first saw movie that horror that is evened out in the end.

In the first their get up is more casual and simple. I've never seen someone so off the mark with the pig masks. They represent the year of the pig in the chinese zodiac, pigs symbolising rebirth of sorts, which is why Johns apprentices wear them- they were 'reborn' in his eyes in order to become an apprentice in the first place, as John was also 'reborn' and realised how fragile life is after his car accident that spurred this whole thing on. We see in one of the movies (can't remember which one) that the first victim of John was actually kidnapped at a festival for the year of the pig, by putting chloroform in the mask and holding it over the victims face, using the massive crowd to his advantage for it to go unnoticed by bystanders. The whole idea of the games in John Kramers eyes is that people must suffer and be reborn from it in order to appreciate their life. Also to add- Amandas trap makes perfect sense. She has a history of self harm which John probably knows about, asking her to hurt herself would be too easy, as she's already doing it, but asking her to hurt someone else in order to live? That's different, she's never had to do that, the only person she's been hurting is herself and because of that, she has to now inflict pain onto others if she doesn't want to die.
How about the old lady and young guy in Saw 6 "Gallows Trap"? They were picked because of contrasts - she was old and sick with a loving family, he was young and healthy but introverted. Or the wife in Saw VII "Brazen Bull" - she didn't even know her husband was lying about surviving a trap, she was just a devoted wife helping the man she loved overcome trauma. Lots of others in the series too. They didn't even do anything WRONG, let alone criminal.
You're only talking about the Jigsaw that was written in Saw IV-onward. In the first three movies, he didn't go after people that were necessarily bad, but instead just regular flawed individuals who (allegedly) did self-inflicting actions.
i think that saw works because first, is not a fantasy tale like the thing or predator, there isnt any superhuman monster or alien, it just a old man with his minions, and all the traps could realistically be made by an engineer with the required equipment, and 2, people are more afraid of suffering than dying, no one wants to die but the idea of suffering pain is horryfying on its own, i think that the inverse bear trap is the most iconic trap for that, you dont want your head to be ripped off because it will kill you, but not instantly.
I have a theory John DID know Amanda was also responsible. He placed the key in a place where Jill was injured. Furthermore Cecil got a pretty easy punishment so the argument he gave her a lite sentence therefore did not know doesn’t stand.
7:14 One thing I always hated about people talking about SAW is as if Jigsaw's logic is supposed to make sense. People think his motives are flawed, thus the movie is flawed, but I dont think you should take the words of a psychopathic murdering engineer seriously.
I get that he’s probably a little unhinged, but his motives and philosophy are actually pretty important parts of the series as a whole. He rambles on about it and people mention it multiple times and the issue isn’t his motives, it’s when pre-established motives are overridden in later movies just because the screenwriters thought they needed cooler, gorier traps
I was so hesitant to watch the first Saw because I expected it to be a total gorefest like the others (I think they were on Saw 3 by the time I finally watched the first one). And I was very surprised! Yes, it is more like Seven!
I really like these video recap things. My three favorite recaps have been: any saw recap, trixie virus, and Alice in borderland (I think that’s the name).
I always felt bad for Adam! I hate how we haven’t got a twist about Adam.. and him being there didn’t make sense. He didn’t seem like he should’ve been punished
I was thinking, the reverse bear trap mask on Amanda was made by John almost in the beginning of his ''game'' so why is it so rusty? He could have used an old bear trap as a base but shouldn't the new parts that form the mechanism be new or at least not covered in rust? I know that it makes it creepier but when one thinks about it doen't make sence, then again maybe they didn't expect to make a sequel.
I was so excited to see Spiral, the new Saw movie. I actually saw it today. I never thought I could be this let down by a movie. I’m not sure if it’s just me. If you feel the same, maybe you should see why it sucked so badly. XD
I could be mistaken but I believe the bathroom segment was written and filmed by two college students and that it was pitched to the publishers and that it was then turned into the first Saw movie and if that’s true, I think that could be another reason as to why it is different than its sequels.
1:35 I believe this is the most unrealistic one. Its in theiddle of the day and there are hundreds of people just watching and there is no way not a single person doesn't directly try to help
The editing style of the Saw films is not merely for show. It’s meant to convey the emotional state of the characters. The editing in the Saw films is used in tandem with its stellar musical direction and sound design to help emphasize the characters emotions. It always has been. I’ve seen far too many people only praise the first film and completely write off the sequels as inferior just because they’re not like the first film. Of course they’re not like the first film. Trying to make the sequels like the original wouldn’t work, so the filmmakers have to try another angle. The sequels are all good in their own right. Sure, some are better than others, but none of them are truly bad like so many people dismiss them as. I went into this hoping you’d be able to recognize this, but you’re no different from the rest. You’ve disappointed me.

That's different, she's never had to do that, the only person she's been hurting is herself and because of that, she has to now inflict pain onto others if she doesn't want to die.
Appreciate the video and stay blessed and have a damn good day
These movies had some serious weapons-grade philosophical insight.
I used to be afraid of jigsaw until I realized he only catches criminals...
I am not a criminal 😰
he once caught a victim just for calling in sick to work.... you aren’t safe either bud no one is
How about the old lady and young guy in Saw 6 "Gallows Trap"?
I think the pig masks are just references to Johns first killing he used a pig mask to blend in and capture his first ever victim. (Cecil)
Your Chanel is amazing!!
Damn are gonna be The Act Man of horror? This video was great man, very entertaining.
A perfect example of a great concept being milked too much
This movie was legendary
facts🤷🏾♂️hope this vid blows up
Something else to add with the pig squeals are that many say those squeals can resemble a human scream, which is certainly unsettling!
Spiral’s lighting looks fantastic, I prefer it.
Can you do a series on how expensive the traps were in saw your estimate how rich Jigsaw was?
Hell yeah man keep up the good work with the reviews
i think that saw works because first, is not a fantasy tale like the thing or predator, there isnt any superhuman monster or alien, it just a old man with his minions, and all the traps could realistically be made by an engineer with the required equipment, and 2, people are more afraid of suffering than dying, no one wants to die but the idea of suffering pain is horryfying on its own, i think that the inverse bear trap is the most iconic trap for that, you dont want your head to be ripped off because it will kill you, but not instantly.
I have a theory John DID know Amanda was also responsible. He placed the key in a place where Jill was injured. Furthermore Cecil got a pretty easy punishment so the argument he gave her a lite sentence therefore did not know doesn’t stand.
I'm pretty sure that we all came here rushing from the title alone
7:14 One thing I always hated about people talking about SAW is as if Jigsaw's logic is supposed to make sense. People think his motives are flawed, thus the movie is flawed, but I dont think you should take the words of a psychopathic murdering engineer seriously.
I get that he’s probably a little unhinged, but his motives and philosophy are actually pretty important parts of the series as a whole. He rambles on about it and people mention it multiple times and the issue isn’t his motives, it’s when pre-established motives are overridden in later movies just because the screenwriters thought they needed cooler, gorier traps
I´ve gotta say, this was a really good video, great pace, very thorough overall fun.
Have a comment for the allmighty algorythm
I was so hesitant to watch the first Saw because I expected it to be a total gorefest like the others (I think they were on Saw 3 by the time I finally watched the first one). And I was very surprised! Yes, it is more like Seven!
I really like these video recap things. My three favorite recaps have been: any saw recap, trixie virus, and Alice in borderland (I think that’s the name).
Saw is a masterpiece
I always felt bad for Adam! I hate how we haven’t got a twist about Adam.. and him being there didn’t make sense. He didn’t seem like he should’ve been punished
Waiting for you to do a video on spiral
because they weren't planning on making 20000 sequels by that time, that's why it's good.
Just when you thought he was done with Saw
I was thinking, the reverse bear trap mask on Amanda was made by John almost in the beginning of his ''game'' so why is it so rusty? He could have used an old bear trap as a base but shouldn't the new parts that form the mechanism be new or at least not covered in rust? I know that it makes it creepier but when one thinks about it doen't make sence, then again maybe they didn't expect to make a sequel.
Did anyone else think Zepp was the killer their first time watching Saw?
can you pls show how to beat SAW SPIRAL
It really is true what they say, the most creative things come from the biggest limitations
Saw is becoming a masterpiece
I was so excited to see Spiral, the new Saw movie. I actually saw it today. I never thought I could be this let down by a movie. I’m not sure if it’s just me. If you feel the same, maybe you should see why it sucked so badly. XD
The only thing good about "Spiral" was the traps.
I think we can all agree that the part that Billy talks to Amanda is the creepiest and scariest end of a game of all the saga tbh😂😂😂
7:47 .....So I see you've never heard of Technoblade......
R u able to make this a series with either the other SAWs or other films (like Scream or IT 2017)
I could be mistaken but I believe the bathroom segment was written and filmed by two college students and that it was pitched to the publishers and that it was then turned into the first Saw movie and if that’s true, I think that could be another reason as to why it is different than its sequels.
1:35 I believe this is the most unrealistic one. Its in theiddle of the day and there are hundreds of people just watching and there is no way not a single person doesn't directly try to help
Literally the best Saw analysis video on TH-cam! But I noticed you really doubled-down on the censorship this time, why is that?
I love it when you upload
Dude I would’ve listened to the other 98% of what you had to say
i dont like gore. i loved saw. the story and such behind everything had me hooked
YAY MORE SAW!!!!
(I just binged the trap explanation videos xD)
are you going to make a how t beat every trap in sprial?
When are u gonna do "how to beat spiral traps?"
Excuse me mate, can we get a how to beat every spiral trap?
Jigsaw “I don’t kill people I give them chances “ him literally killing a police officer in 1
