  • PLEASE SUBSCRIBE :) August 6, 2021. This is going to be one of many videos coming out on this machine! In this video, my friend Mike (UnitCrane514 on TH-cam) and I get the crane on a trailer and bring it home! Sorry for the abrupt ending to the video, but there will be more content to follow! It's been a busy year and I will have more time to upload during the winter.

My dad welded a piece of tube across the top of the swing lever to make it easier to push and pull. Those things had a tendency to swing when you were walking them and I saw what you did tying it down. Made lots of mods to it including Koehring tracks and bigger bucket plus an international engine, then a 4v71 which made us change the gears to slow it down a bit.

As a kid, I would watch those old timers run these things cleaning ditches and river in our irrigation district. They made it look so easy. I eventually got into the excavating business when I grew up.
Congrats on your acquisition. She’s a real dandy.

My dad was a dragline operator all his life
He bought a Sargent Dragline from Iowa Machine works back in the 40s
    Wore it out several times
It was a 1/4 yard machine
    D318 cat with pony motor
I never got to learn how to run it
Cuz he was ready to retire and the draglines were being replaced with track hoes
Sure do miss watching him operate it

That brings back memories for me. Right after high school, I was an "Oiler" on an old NW#6, dragline, for a couple months. The company was from Iron Mountain UP MI. The old operator was "Tony". He was sort of an old strong headed man, but could really throw the "Muck". Those old NW's were dubbed, "Man Killers".

The old boys made it look so easy ! But they were used to hard work . In my early 20’s I ran a Aden’s whirlybird or WWII crane for export timber, it operated on the same principle as the dragline but used a 10 ton spreader bar and 16’ diameter grapples that opened & closed using clutches and loading up the whip line . A main load line with a 12 part line would hoist the load and. Slowly lowering the grapples while gently letting of the clutch break . Get it in the wrong order and you could have a mess at multiple levels … mainly in your shorts and greasing was a all day job ! Finds memories and a few terrifying one looking back nearly 40 yrs now.
I like watching these guys younger it must be something form a lost civilization or archeological find relative to today’s equipment

When I was in high school a neighbor used his dragline to dig a pond deeper that was on my family's farm. This past summer I drove one of the trucks on a dredging project that had two large draglines moving material and loading trucks. Be careful around those cables. The cranes on that job this summer had a cable brake failure once and one cable snap. The operator inside said he thought he was a goner when numerous feet of cable came falling down within feet of where he sits

One of these machines that looks an awful lot like yours, just ended up off of the edge of the road and in a field in Silverwood, MI this year. I saw a couple of fellas working on it a few weeks ago and as last week, it didn't appear to be moved. I don't know anything about this machine, and that is why I did an Internet search and found your video. If I see it being worked on again, I will stop to learn more about it.

    New subscriber.
From watching a chanel with a guy rebuilding starting engines, aka pony motor, he said to turn the fuel off to shut the motor down so gasoline doesn't drain past the float needle with all of the bouncing of the machine. The gas would got into the crankcase, thin the oil and drastically decrease the life of the motor.

I’m happy your reviving the old girl. It’s mechanical. Slow. Decades before hydraulics. The country moved slower then so the 25 didn’t seem as slow as it did its work.
Don’t create false hopes of performance.... draglines did not make it to the moon. They were decades old when Armstrong was lucky enough to get to the moon and back, long after machines like yours paved the way for him to do so...

    • @BrewstersAuto
      @BrewstersAuto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is slow in some aspects but I'll put up any of our 20 northwest draglines against a comparable or even larger excavator doing cycle work and I know the dragline will put up more material than the newest excavator. There are very few machines capable of digging material out from under the water table as quick as a dragline. That's why gravel pits still use them and crane companies still make em. Long reach excavators are slow and have so small of a bucket it's like using a garden hand shovel to mine coal. A dredge depending on what type have lots of flaws especially the suction pump style, it doesn't pick up any stone or larger rock.

I ran one just about like that when I was 14 years old I'm now 72. once you get brakes and clutches adjusted there not to bad to operate not like hydraulic though there's a turret lock on there somewhere. We dug some pretty good sized lake with owers, bucket with holes works best and if possible pump pond dry first. They came reach and dump dirt much further than hyd , machines and capable of moving enormous amount of dirt just try not to turn dirt into soup! Good luck to you.

You say miserable to run ..,,
It’s because your ignorant of the appropriate maintenance and operation of the machine. You on your way to learning. Whiners are the ones that get attention when the rest of the men are working.
Study up. Fix the miss in the motor. Adjust the main clutch.
Then get in with the hands on learning the machine will give you.
It’s tougher and... smarter than you cause those who made it are 2x ahead of you.
Get on with it and be appreciative your not digging it by hand.

I was the guy operating it. He was well out of the way of the draw works and there was no load on the lines. Unfortunately there was no other option but to have Nate ride on the fairlead, he was steering the machine with a pipewrench as it had steering issues at the time. Machine has been repaired since then and there is no reason to stand in the danger zone now.
