The MG 4 is the BEST car I've driven all year!

  • This is the all-new MG4! Mat’s got his hands on this family-friendly EV, and he’s about to see if it can compete with class leaders such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and Cupra Born.
For starters, it looks great from the outside! Top-of-the-range models get a smart light bar around the back and a cool roof spoiler. What’s more, they also come with a black roof and blacked-out rear windows. There’s also a super cool front splitter up top, along with some smart daytime running lights. One thing’s for sure, this car looks much more expensive than it actually is!
The good news is, the good looks continue on the inside. There are two large separate infotainment and dial screens, and a smart two-spoke steering wheel. You’ll also find good-quality materials throughout the majority of the cabin. The infotainment system is ok, but it does also come with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay as standard.
There are two choices of batteries, with the range-topper being 61kWh. This then comes with a range of up to 281 miles, along with a 203hp motor. This car, and the entry-level, are both rear-wheel drive.
So what's the price? Well, it starts from just over £26,000! Think it sounds too good to be true? You’ll have to join Mat for this all-new review to see for yourself!

Got it wrong about the phone charging cable. The rubber mat lifts out and there is a slit from each hole to the edge, allowing you to slide the cable into the hole. Under the mat is a larger hole that the connector will pass through.. That way, when you replace the mat, you can still slide the cable to adjust length, but the connector cant drop through.

Like how they are pushing the legacy manufacturers to lower their price. The price of other EVs is crazy! However I'm still not swayed to buy an ev. For a few reasons:
      1. Are they really the future or will they be the betamax of the motoring world.
      2. Far too expensive for what you get and the charging infrastructure isn't there.
      3. Cost of electricity and availability of electricity. The country is talking about blackouts as is Europe. Can we charge all these cars without investment into wind solar and wave power generation systems first!
      4. This relates to MG and China. Can we allow ourselves to buy cheap cars like MG and BYD at the expense of the Chinese workers, the possibility of major control of the world by china and there record on relationships with the USA and Taiwan. They could invade Taiwan like Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2020!!!
      5. Are EVs are eco as they say. What about the slaves digging all the precious metal out of the earth for a pittance and the effect it has on the planet. What about the disposal of all the batteries once depleted or damaged. What about the particulates EVs disperse into the aur from brake and tyres this is greater than an ice vehicle as they are so much heavier! Yes no co2 from an ev at source but other particulates and co2 etc from the power stations!
So many issues but China is a big one for me. Sorry not sorry
      Greg

Fake MG, Shame on any cheap skate buying Chinese Cars! You have no dignity or principles. We are literally at war with China and you are trying to promote their industry. Think further than a quick buck today. Don't you want your kids to live in a free world? Support western leaning nations industry i.e. UK, EU, US, S Korea, Japan etc...
Your future if you buy Chinese brands ( made in china is different, profits go to western nations, western people, and western technology companies )

China is not yet strong enough, there is still a chance for a future where democracy and choice remains dominant. If you make the right decisions now the world still has a chance for a democratic future. You might be silly enough to think you have no choice now. This means you do not really understand what it is like to live under a truly totalitarian regime. In the 1980's women who became pregnant for a second time were dragged by police in to makeshift hospitals and forced abortions were performed. No one could stop the state doing this. That is China yesterday and that is China today. The same single party rules in China. The video below is from only 13 years ago. If they are willing to do this to their own people, what will they do once they have power over you.

@@Clove_Parma Actually, Electricity is about half the cost of petrol or diesel, unless you charge it at a fast charger, when it works out only a little more expensive. But how many times do you actually go more than 350 km in a day? And if you have solar panels, you effectively get your fuel for free.
And next year MG will be launching a 77KwH varian, which will have a range of close to 350 MILES. I recently drove a KIA XCeed whose petrol range was only slightly further than that, and I certainly didn't use all that range in a day.
For most people, the only time you are likely to need anything more than 500km at a single go is when you go on holiday. Maybe that will encourage you not to try to drive too far at a single hit.

Because of many years of UK Motoring media prejudicial brainwashing of UK car consumers' minds, MG Motor of China did not place the UK car consumer high on its list of priority World Markets. That is still the case today. Unlike some Nation I could mention, the Chinese are not mugs. Some really attractive MGs have been available elsewhere but not here in the UK for years. They appear now to be taking the UK consumer market more seriously. Down my street, there are no less than FOUR Chinese MGs. 2 pure EVs and a couple of hybrids. There was five but I sold my Top Spec MG6 petrol 1.8T recently. Sorry to see it go. New owner delighted with it. There again. the MG6 is a far better ordinary production car than for whatever reason, those of UK motoring influence led us all to believe when they first appeared over here. I was really sorry to see that car go so I now have to creep about in another MG, one with a galloping equine V8 under the bonnet.
Nice as the MG4 appears to be, the MG5 EV would better suit my needs, I doubt I'll ever go electric unless forced to do so by all the green meanies with their worst misguided intentions. Pure EVs are far from green. They need their batteries charged frequently and where does the energy come from to do that... answers on a fossilised postcard.

Sounds similar to when I tried an early MG ZSEV. Same issues but the interior was also very cheap feeling which looks like something they have addressed. Only big difference was the charge speed was dire. It was hovering around 40kW most of the time in the sweet spot and even that depended on what mood it was in. I didn't bother in the end - mostly because of the "safety" systems. I was less than impressed when the auto-braking went full on ABS to avoid what I can only presume was the tree on the path around 3ft away from the road on a slight bend. The guy behind me was even less impressed because he was too close and had to swerve to avoid the back.

LiFeP is rather more robust than the Li-ion, you can charge to 100% as you like, and the battery should last as long as the car. So unless you really need that longer range, I think the smaller battery version should appeal. Pity no true one-pedal motoring, one of things on my Leaf that I really appreciate.

Please educate yourself before regurgitating silly lines from the advertising people.
The wholesale price per kWh of batteries is on the net for all to see - as are the costings for motors, controllers and so on - and so far there is no EV that should cost more than its ice counterpart.
I did the workings out for a Zoe vs a Clio a few years back (can be found on some ev forums even now - all checkable info and all there with links) and the Clio at the time was around £12k, the Zoe around £24k. When you look at all the costs involved and with the same profit per car - so a higher margin - the Zoe should have been comfortably under £10k.
Yes every EV so far has been a rip off and yes they make (lots of) money on each one they sell.

Interesting review of an important car. Good to view Matt's opinions forming in real time. I like the vehicle to load option as we have a lot of power outages and we could run our refrigeration, computers lights and phones during blackouts. For those who worry about Chinese made cars remember that the Teslas we purchase in Australia are made in China, and to my eye they are at least as well made as those from Fremont Ca.

    • @bbbf09
      @bbbf09 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

It's not he fact that Teslas (and others) are franchised out and made in China. (Even though it should be noted - this is not the same as having quality control and design & R&D being Chinese). This is a *totally* Chinese car brand though. Very different. Even if the technical specs are of the highest and quality control sorted - which Chinese are capable of - the likelihood is that psycho Russia's best-friend-for-life is not going to be our friend in west for perhaps to much longer (If it ever was).
Certainly if starts to support Russia - or starts its own invasion of Taiwan - (or even Australia ?)- as it is gearing up for - then economic sanctions, separation and potentially all out war is possible. In that situation even obtaining ongoing serviciing and parts might be an 'issue' for this car - to say the least. And thats assuming the car doesnt have some hidden remote off switch in it soft/firmware controlled straight out of Beijing. Or perhaps a simple over-the-air update that means it can be bricked. Personally I wouldn't be surpised if even now, all the telematics from this car - even driving videos - arent already being beamed to Beijing for storage already (like TikTok).

The MG5 is exactly the same, in that they haven't catered for a frunk.
However, removing the plastic cladding under the bonnet of the MG4 reveals a fairly deep (but slightly narrow) area which, with a little ingenuity, could have a plastic-lidded box of some nature secured in place - MG5 owners have been doing the exact same thing on their cars...!

    • @benrgrogan

Apparently the reason for the lack of front boot is that it was going to be fairly small anyway, so they moved HVAC and other systems out of the cabin and into the boot to make the cabin larger. I just test drove one this week. The car amazed and disappointed in some ways. Here is my tldr, coming from driving a run down 2008 Golf 6 with the sad entry level engine and manual transmission
+ motor response and power delivery feels like going a century into the future coming from my old car. Daily drivers don't need more than this
+ good suspension setup regarding lateral forces. Felt sporty, precise and much better than expected
+ clean looks and intuitive ish controls all around
+ Luxuriously good ACC that makes traffic jams half as infuriating to deal with. Brakes to full stop (sometimes a bit late and harsh) and then accellerates super smoothly
+ In sports mode the steering is awesome and its great they allow you to mix sport steering with eco motor control
    - handles bumps worse than my old near broken car with 210000km on it (noisy over potholes, tends to bounce and shake you around)
    - squishy soft seats bound to wear out soon and for a tall person the bolstering meant for the neck or something is annoying around the shoulder
    - no onboard nav. If android auto craps out like on our test drive you are screwed. No fancy charge stop route planning like VW and Tesla or Mercedes have either.
    - The Lane keep assist is a proper menace on tight roads. If you get close to a lane marking it steers you on it and glues itself to it for a second before letting you drive again, or goes left and right like a ping pong ball on its own.
    - If you make the car twice as good by disabling the lane keep assist and put the motor into eco to reach the claimed range and the steering in sport mode... your settings return to default when you enter your car next time.

The MG4 is most definitely a 'disrupter' model...
Once iD.3 / Cupra Born / Megane E-Tech sales plummet, manufacturers will have no choice but to re-price their models accordingly....
All to the benefit of the consumer, of course...
    Roll-on 'market-forces'...! 😉

@@abu269 same position as me! I've been borrowing a family member's car but want an electric car as my work commute is increasing and whilst I'd like Kia EV6 or a more premium electric car, this seems to tick almost every box other than having a ncie brand name.

Have you taken the plunge or are you still using your petrol car? I’m putting down a deposit for the MG4 tomorrow - I need a small electric car for the commute and we’ve decided that maybe in a year we’ll sell our main family car and go for a large electric and abandon ICE altogether!

I saw this thing a year plus ago and was excited not only about the style, RWD sensation, power, technology it brings, but also a part of British elements and accents it has, because since I can't fulfill my UK life time visit, must well have this by my side everyday.....and thanks god, MG has it CKD in Indonesia right now at a very affordable price. FYI i studied for Cambridge Examination during my younger age, and that made me somehow connected to British type of culture and living. I❤UK

The std range has a LFP (LiFePO4) Battery so 100% charge is advised as the Long range is NCM battery and advised standard charge 80% ( like a lot of others).
The standard range is probably better for "Normal" motorists. Longer life, easier charging and at 100% vs 80% not much difference in range. Oh and if you are worried LFP is much safer technology!! Enjoy whatever you choose!
