The most amazing thing about this fight scene is that (excluding the part where Bortz quickly show up), everything happens in a single cut until the final attack. The camera moving around and abusing perspective adds emphasis to every moment, making the fight way more interesting to watch. While this is possible to do in 2d Anime, it takes a lot of time and the animator must have a crazy sense of perspective, so it's not worth the budget. I'm glad this anime actually abused the features that could be done _only_ in CG, watching it is an entirely new experience compared to most other anime.
God that impact and shatter at the end is just so painful. Everything has so much weight to it even though there are these crazy gravity-defying jumps.
Khai-The Casual Player actually Bnha is animated by studio Bones (they did also Noragami Kekkan sensei Bungou stray dogs and the first anime of FMA I think )
i love how this scene shows dia wanting, needing to protect the gems (bortz included), after being protected by bortz for a long time. The scene after this also really shows their relationship with bortz; they love bortz a lot, but only treasure it when separated and vice verse with bortz. I cried a lot in both scenes
It's not just about loving each other. Their duo harms them quite a lot. Diamond pushes xemself so hard it breaks xem (both litteraly and figuratively) because xe wants to get to Bort's level to impress xem, and Bort is in return so tyranical because xe suffers from seing Diamond in that state. This kind of grey, aching love, that is the good stuff! At least that's what I think from seing how Diamond's fighting style in this scene echoes that of xer introduction in episode 2.
The bitter relationship is something to behold. Usually it seems that relations are either ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, but this is one that actually needs to be called ‘complicated’. Diamond wants to be accepted as one of the diamond class gems, but feels useless in comparison to the youngest of the 3(4 if I count Green Diamond) who is both not gem quality but is just a better fighter in all aspects in comparison to all of the others. The gem just feels like it’d be better if this newbie just...stopped existing, if it meant that Diamond could be the diamond the gem wants to be. Bort on the other hand, fights for the sake of everyone, but wants everyone to fight as if they were like, well, Bort. But Bort doesn’t quite understand non-Bort things, so the gem chastises things that are not of Bort-quality, without understanding the unintended harm it causes. But the biggest contrast is that Diamond fights even if it hurts, but Bort fights so that no one is harmed.
You know what a badass is? That's someone who loses their leg while fighting a giant, grabs their broken leg and jumps back into the fight, gets knocked against the ceiling and loses their arms, then runs right into the beast, using the ends of their broken arms to shank the overgrown son of a bitch. Guts looks like a wimp next to Diamond.
That's the thing, though. Diamond is a super rock that can be fixed if something happens. She could literally be smashed to bits and still come back just fine. But Guts is just a normal dude, right? If Guts lost both arms and a leg trying to take out one monster he'd just be screwed. That being said... I mean... let's be real. Guts has fought stuff that feels crazier than this, as well. While the Cloud Dog is really strong, it feels pretty comparable to Wyld or Mozgus or something like Zodd, which are all creatures Guts struggled against but eventually managed to overcome. So between using his bombs to distract it and the canon and Dragonslayer to finish it off, I feel like Guts could probably manage this even without the Berserker armor.
@@dracocrusher I was being hyperbolic, but it was entirely possible, from Diamond's perspective, that she could lose the fight and get taken away to who knows where. Gems can't die, but they could get taken and turned into mindless weapons that are turned against their own friends. Which sounds worse than death, really.
@@theproplady Sure, but as long as she takes it out with her there's no real issue, right? The real problem is if you get taken. Because there's no real way to the moon, so if you get taken then that's as close to death as it could be. And knowing what happens after they're taken, let's just say even the Lunerians aren't expecting them to really come back from being taken, either.
while I enjoyed the action scenes in this anime as much as the next guy, what I really love about it is how lively the characters behave in the more peaceful scenes, especially in the background. In a 2D drawn anime, a person standing in the background often is just one picture and won't move at all; in most cg anime, they do move a little, but it looks very artificial, like a gif that repeats every 2 seconds. In Houseki no Kuni, even when characters are just standing in the background, they move and act so natural and lively, it's simply amazing.
It amazes me that almost entire scene was just 1 prolonged shot with advanced POV movment around the action scene. Also the little things like: Diamond leg flying off directly into POV after she hits wall, a closeup on her scared eye when she's about to be hit by monster used as a cut to Bort seeing the monster strike window with full force leaving mark outside. This show should be talked about way more, I almost skipped it and it's one of best animes I've seen so far yet.
This fight made me understand so much about how Diamond fights, who he is and what is his relationship with Bort. I want to see other characters get this kind of quality development too.

I think it's really charming how Bort called Dia "Ni-chan". From my limited understanding of Japanese, this means Big brother. For those who don't know, the gems most commonly use masculine pronouns (Despite their more feminine appearances in the anime). Bort calling Dia Ni-chan shows that Bort looks up to Dia. Dia was always saying that it was Bort that was leaving her behind. This implied that Bort was a level above Diamond (which he is). But in this, it shows that Bort looks up to her. Bort uses a title of high respect for Diamond in the most tense moment. And this got lost in the translation it would seem, as the subtitles just say "Diamond!" For that part.

(see ch. 88) Even screaming out " _YOU CALL THAT PATHETIC NOISE CHEERING?! YOU MORONS!_ ", yes, he brought his lunarian fans along. " *You've changed, brother.* " - Bortz After that line, both gems lie destroyed on the grass, with Dia breaking a smile, finally succeeded his little brother. This shit was heartbreaking.
Every frame of this scene, every shot, every twitch of animation, is fucking perfect and brings a tear to my eye every time i see it. HNK is way too underrated
Diamond is unbreakable... if said diamond was only a tiny little gemstone that you can pick up with two fingers. In Dia's case though, since her whole body is an elongated mass of diamond, vibrations from impacts can travel and break in in random points across her body.
minus the fact that Dia became more independent from Bortz in this scene, i love it because it also shows the strength of Diamond, both as a fighter and a gem. He doesnt shatter into shards, just in large chunks, im assuming on the weaker points and he uses his hardness to fight, knowing damn well his shattered limbs are strong enough and sharp enough
This scene is so well done. They really made use of what they could do with computer animation. Especially with camera angles. It's beautiful. And I love Diamond. They just,,,, they really astounded me with this fight.
This goes in the list of top 5 scenes from HnK This was a character defining scene, a pivotal point in Dia's arc, and it looked fucking amazing too! I am so happy for Dia and cannot wait to see episode 12
This episode is what sealed this anime as best of the season for me. The camera shots were amazing. I completely forgot it was cgi, even though that was 1) what made it possible and amazing, and 2) what initially made me skeptical about the show.
obsidian swords have a hardness of 5, simply so they do not chip/hurt the gems. phos is also one of 2 field gems who could hurt themselves with the sword, making the self harm ideation in episode 7 hard to watch in hindsight
Dia is the literal definition of Glass Cannon. Strong but fragile. Also can we talk about how she used her severed arm as a blade? She reminds me of that one species of frog. Hairy frog was it? That rips their arm out and uses the exposed bone as a blade.
TH-cam put this in my recommendation just to hurt me again sheeeshhhh. It’s been 2 year and i still can’t get over Bortz and Dia relationship. Their problem is connect with so many aspect in the HnK world building. Starting from character development and the shift downward of relationship. I saw a lot of people saying they are uncomfortable with the now manga Dia and tbh, same. It’s hurt to see the kind dedicate Dia who used to soft spoke with phos and even risk herself in danger just to put phos back from the snail event ; now turn into a quite self center and aggorant to the others. But do keep in mind, all the gems, just like human, have their own selfishness. The reason they were all soft and kind is because they have to fight and work everyday without the opportunity to show who they truly are. Such gems like Red Beryl have the chances to show their talent in fashion and making clothing because it is needed in the battle while gems like Bortz with the interest in raising jellyfish, couldn’t do it until lunarians stop attacking. Same with Dia, I think they originally is quite the social butterfly type. To be like by everyone and to be the attention of everyone ( Dia is usually the model of red beryl in testing clothes because their knack of being an idol). But being with Bortz make them feel small about themself because Bortz skill for fighting is what all the gems care and need more in the battle area. I have read a post theory that said Dia is quite suicidal- through the episode where dia first appear, it has demonstrate clearly how Dia isn’t afraid to risk themselves. There might be a slight idea where they think it would have been better where they are taken to the moon and everyone mourn their lost (finally be importance and remember by everyone like other gems that has been captured) and now through this one, it can be understand Dia would self harm for the attention they need. Dia loved Bortz, they really do. But because of lack communication, the rivalry between them turn toxic. In the manga, despite being partner, other gems said “Bortz is here so everything is fine” and that really hurt Dia. They felt casted out and can easily be replace (Bortz keep on changing partners, but really just in other to make gems with potential stronger to protect everyone else). After going to the moon, Dia of course got what they need. Becoming an idol is just the perfect job for them, they are one of a kind there. It’s understandable that they refuse to fight with Phos again because not much people want face their past. A side note here since Ichikawa art style is quite more simple and doesn’t do much of expression exaggeration, the manga seems always very calm and peaceful. Therefore, it might be hard to understand how traumatize it was for Dia on earth. Constantly have to bottle up their feelings, their wants and put on a smile for the others sake. Dia cooped with this by forcing themselves to think nice and positive (episode where Dia lecture Phos about how Bortz really is). Despite living for a long time and understand on how situation is. There is something inside Dia still feel unease. Knowing the truth yet find it hard to accept. So when they get the chance to become themselves and live how they truly are, they would go all out and enjoy it, cover for the decades they had to suffer. A thing i always keep in mind is that the gems we like aren’t much of what they truly are but just a mask they have to put on in other to fit the situation and the others standard .
The camera movement adds so much to this scene and the series as a whole. It boggles my mind with how bad 3DCG shows are just 2D anime with 3D assets. Why not take advantage of the freedom of 3D cameras???
Episode 10 seemingly has the least cuts in the entire series, and yet features more extensive sakuga sequences in that same episode than most anime have in their entire run. Orange, you goddamn geniuses.

The pickle is that the gems are cannonically genderless, and English doesn't have a gender-neutral word for Dia and Bort's relationship except the clunky "sibling." Because of this, rendering "niichan" as either "older bro" or "older sis" creates a conflict between translation and characterization. The Japanese meanwhile, seem to be more flexible as to the usage of gendered words, so "niichan" would make sense regardless of the gender (or lack thereof) of the speaker

They're actually all canonly genderless, there's no concept of gender among them, which is really cool! In Japanese most "masculine" pronouns can be used in a neutral way too, and like most languages Japanese doesn't have enough gender neutral words for them to express themselves in a perfectly neutral way, hence the "Niichan" etc.
Titilayo Aderemi-Williams I don't think that's the reason why, bc if it was the case they would all be using the same pronouns. they use boku, ore, and watashi It's just difficult in a language to render genderless characters bc of the lack of neutral terms, but well they're rocks, so of course they're not male or female

I love this series, it's got some of the best looking CG and fight choreography in anime.
Probably right along side Guilty Gear Xrd in terms of graphics.

minus the fact that Dia became more independent from Bortz in this scene, i love it because it also shows the strength of Diamond, both as a fighter and a gem. He doesnt shatter into shards, just in large chunks, im assuming on the weaker points and he uses his hardness to fight, knowing damn well his shattered limbs are strong enough and sharp enough

This scene is so well done. They really made use of what they could do with computer animation. Especially with camera angles. It's beautiful. And I love Diamond. They just,,,, they really astounded me with this fight.

This was a character defining scene, a pivotal point in Dia's arc, and it looked fucking amazing too! I am so happy for Dia and cannot wait to see episode 12
This episode is what sealed this anime as best of the season for me. The camera shots were amazing. I completely forgot it was cgi, even though that was 1) what made it possible and amazing, and 2) what initially made me skeptical about the show.

phos is also one of 2 field gems who could hurt themselves with the sword, making the self harm ideation in episode 7 hard to watch in hindsight

Dia is the literal definition of Glass Cannon. Strong but fragile. Also can we talk about how she used her severed arm as a blade? She reminds me of that one species of frog. Hairy frog was it? That rips their arm out and uses the exposed bone as a blade.

It’s been 2 year and i still can’t get over Bortz and Dia relationship. Their problem is connect with so many aspect in the HnK world building. Starting from character development and the shift downward of relationship.
I saw a lot of people saying they are uncomfortable with the now manga Dia and tbh, same. It’s hurt to see the kind dedicate Dia who used to soft spoke with phos and even risk herself in danger just to put phos back from the snail event ; now turn into a quite self center and aggorant to the others. But do keep in mind, all the gems, just like human, have their own selfishness. The reason they were all soft and kind is because they have to fight and work everyday without the opportunity to show who they truly are. Such gems like Red Beryl have the chances to show their talent in fashion and making clothing because it is needed in the battle while gems like Bortz with the interest in raising jellyfish, couldn’t do it until lunarians stop attacking. Same with Dia, I think they originally is quite the social butterfly type. To be like by everyone and to be the attention of everyone ( Dia is usually the model of red beryl in testing clothes because their knack of being an idol). But being with Bortz make them feel small about themself because Bortz skill for fighting is what all the gems care and need more in the battle area.
I have read a post theory that said Dia is quite suicidal- through the episode where dia first appear, it has demonstrate clearly how Dia isn’t afraid to risk themselves. There might be a slight idea where they think it would have been better where they are taken to the moon and everyone mourn their lost (finally be importance and remember by everyone like other gems that has been captured) and now through this one, it can be understand Dia would self harm for the attention they need.
Dia loved Bortz, they really do. But because of lack communication, the rivalry between them turn toxic. In the manga, despite being partner, other gems said “Bortz is here so everything is fine” and that really hurt Dia. They felt casted out and can easily be replace (Bortz keep on changing partners, but really just in other to make gems with potential stronger to protect everyone else).
After going to the moon, Dia of course got what they need. Becoming an idol is just the perfect job for them, they are one of a kind there. It’s understandable that they refuse to fight with Phos again because not much people want face their past. A side note here since Ichikawa art style is quite more simple and doesn’t do much of expression exaggeration, the manga seems always very calm and peaceful. Therefore, it might be hard to understand how traumatize it was for Dia on earth. Constantly have to bottle up their feelings, their wants and put on a smile for the others sake. Dia cooped with this by forcing themselves to think nice and positive (episode where Dia lecture Phos about how Bortz really is).
Despite living for a long time and understand on how situation is. There is something inside Dia still feel unease. Knowing the truth yet find it hard to accept. So when they get the chance to become themselves and live how they truly are, they would go all out and enjoy it, cover for the decades they had to suffer.
A thing i always keep in mind is that the gems we like aren’t much of what they truly are but just a mask they have to put on in other to fit the situation and the others standard .
What an underrated anime. I love this anime. Ever since I watched it.
The camera movement adds so much to this scene and the series as a whole. It boggles my mind with how bad 3DCG shows are just 2D anime with 3D assets. Why not take advantage of the freedom of 3D cameras???

The pickle is that the gems are cannonically genderless, and English doesn't have a gender-neutral word for Dia and Bort's relationship except the clunky "sibling." Because of this, rendering "niichan" as either "older bro" or "older sis" creates a conflict between translation and characterization. The Japanese meanwhile, seem to be more flexible as to the usage of gendered words, so "niichan" would make sense regardless of the gender (or lack thereof) of the speaker

What Bort shout is actually not Diamond but "Nijian" meaning elder brother.

Yimin Tong yeah, the subs like to keep it gender neutral to avoid offending people, but in reality they use male pronouns
They're actually all canonly genderless, there's no concept of gender among them, which is really cool! In Japanese most "masculine" pronouns can be used in a neutral way too, and like most languages Japanese doesn't have enough gender neutral words for them to express themselves in a perfectly neutral way, hence the "Niichan" etc.
