she was built with steel from the beginning. even nat tried to tell her that going down there is a death sentence, but she already knew and went anyway. despite her staring into death's eyeballs and looking into his soul NUMEROUS times on the way down, she has balls of steel for even making it to the 6th layer, where if you so as jump for joy, exploration failed

The sheer mental strength she has for her age is honestly more than impressive.
I really like the scene were Reg has to stop the venom after Riko got stung,the screams,the voice acting,it felt there. It felt real! I love how well done the scene is. It actually make you sick

One small detail I noticed was the stick fell out of her mouth. Like gezz give Riko a break. She couldn't even bite on the stick that's horrible:(
The transformation gave me the worst feeling of dread. The bleeding out of the eyes and the poison just made me nauseous

One of my favorite things about Made in Abyss is that despite all of the horrible bleakness the characters encounter, they remain so goddamn positive.
They push onward with their heads held high in pursuit of adventure, knowing they can never return. Death and fates worse still around every corner, but they, especially Riko, keep that positive outlook that leads them through it all.
It's something that persists throughout it and it contrasts so well with how incredibly horrible the negative experiences are.
This. This is the reason I kept on watching the series (aside from the gorgeous creature and environment designs). No matter how dangerous or gut-wrenching the situation became, Riko just forges onward
It's a very… *affirmative* show in how it approaches its potential fatalism and nihilism. Like, the endpoint of Riko's journey is death. Even if and when she finds what she's looking for, she's pretty certainly some flavour of completely doomed. And yet she continues to put one foot in front of the other, because she has a goal and she needs to pursue it as far as her body (and her friends) can possibly take her. Even if it's never seen through, if it kills her before it can be completed, she will try and try and try, with the perseverance of a madwoman, and that's what matters. It's honestly inspiring despite its bleakness of concept.

I can't help but wonder what caused Riko to stop bleeding. It seems to have stopped as soon as Reg broke her arm; I feel like getting an injury after ascending wouldn't disrupt the effects of the curse, and Riko didn't seem to loose enough blood to be animic.
Could it be that ascending from the 4th layer isn't necessarily fatal enough to cause actual death from blood loss, or did blood stop coming out because she was laying down?
My first thought was that her blood just clots quickly
I always assumed it's not a fatal side effect necessarily.
In the video game once you stop accending it anything that doesn't deform you wears off after a little while
yeah, ascending from the 4th layer isn't necessarily deadly, it's just painful and risky
u can ascend from the 4th layer to the surface with little to no problem but unless u rise up very very quickly in a matter of secs then it can be fatal but not deadly well sometimes

God this shows story and expositions are so damn dark at times, but that's what makes it special. Not a lot of Anime choose to go down a more gorey path, it's just a breath of fresh air from mostly romantic anime.
That last gore scene really took it to the next level...

So, uh, I recently started getting invested in this show. I haven't even made it past episode 2, and I can already tell that the best part of all this is how the show refuses to pull it's punches. It's downright adorable at times, but those heelturns into horror hit so incredibly hard.

My mum let me watch this when I was 6 or 7- the corpse weeper scene stuck with me a lot, and I finally got to show her it! She thought the art style was super cute so likely thought nothing of it.
I don’t know if that’s a great thing or not that you’ve discovered this one (literal) hell of a masterpiece so early on. But first of all, R.I.P. innocence. That’s why parents should’ve atleast look at the ratings and maybe a sypnosis of a story.

I usually don't react a lot when it comes to some scenes, but made in abyss this show broke me, the entire 10 episode I was at the edge of my seat, and let's not talk about the final episode of the season, I literally did the unthinkable and watched the movie in the same day, guess who was broken from inside that week 😭💀
I was really surprised at just how dark MIA got, and by how quickly, too. Because of the art style, I started out thinking it would be a cutesy little romp, but man -- that didn't last long. (Didn't survive the first episode, TBH.)

Its an Adventure anime, with Dark Sci-Fi vibes. It has a few violent scenes with gore and at least one psychological trauma scene. But most of the time it focuses on adventure.
Not recommended for children, or people who are faint hearted.

Japan has a lot of kid anime which are popular. Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiment Lain, Made in Abyss. to name a few of them. All of them family friendly and it did air as a kids show. Just watch it laid back with your whole family.

This is like Happy Tree Friends! I am shocked and horrified but at the same time still want to continue because why the hell not I want to witness everything since my sanity is already messed up lol, I just think it's interesting and I just have that eagerness to see through it to understand everything.
I used to think anime was just cringe.
Now I realise how terrifying anime can be. This is worse than seeing a live action person tortured and mutilated.
I don't watch anime anymore but I used to binge it when I was younger and yeah, there are a tonne of dark anime, emotional and imagery wise.
Anime make very relatable and loveable characters and then put them through hell, or they have a mix of lighthearted fun then next episode will hit you hard with something dark (Full Metal Alchemist, Elfen Lied and Chrono Crusade did that well). Japan are masters at character building too, and then you'll be made to watch that character go through something traumatic. Yeah it's fictional and animated, but the execution is often brilliant.
God I need to start watching it again.. it was off the wall and unpredictable unlike western stuff.
@@whiskii Elfen Lied didn't age well imo. I tried watching it for the first time as an adult and cringed hard. But I could see how I would've loved it if I was like 14 or something. It's got destruction, death, gore and boobs. The beginning has some Mewtwo strikes back energy lol. If you wanna see a show that's a lot better and has a similar 'Psychic rampage' opener, "Shin Sekai Yori" is one.
It's got a really trippy vibe to it like hitchhikers guide to the galaxy or something and but it can be a little high brow and hard to follow at times tbh. It's adapted from an actual written book.
Basically about a society that takes place a thousand years after the awakening of psychokinetic powers to mankind, which leads to the slow decay of modern day human civilization as tyrants seize power one after another until society was eventually radically reshaped over time around psychic powers instead of technology. This leads to a society where such powers and people are heavily suppressed from a young age due to how dangerous they are, and almost all modern technology is gone and life has reverted to an almost feudalistic Heian-era.
If that sounds interesting to you, then I highly recommend it.
That's because of how cutesy the art style is, it has a much bigger effect normal art styles.
I remember someone recomending me this anime, at first i thought it was gonna be somenthing like tipical anime adventure...

I have such conflicting feelings about this show... On one hand it nails tragedy like no other anime I've ever seen: Mitty and Prushka are two of the most tragic characters I've encountered in TV and I've never felt more emotional over other characters, ever.
But on the other hand sometimes the show does things that are in such BAD TASTE! I'm not talking about gore and stuff that can amplify the atmosphere and raise stakes (The show also has incredible dramatic moments thanks to all the things that go wrong to the cast), I'm talking about what feels (to me) like fanservice: Just go to the video recommendations tab and you'll see a thumbnail of Riko from the second layer (You know what scene I'm talking about), and should I even talk about THAT Marulk scene!?!?!? It just leaves such a bad taste in my mouth and in my opinion the creepy undertones of the show is the reason barely anyone talks about it on mainstream media.
That's Japan for ya... & yeah I absolutely hate it. it's why I'm not into Anime as much as I should be. I really don't get it either... Why tf is that sort of thing so mainstream in Anime/Japan? I don't get it nor do I want to.
Some of it can be tasteless, but honestly it's not nearly as fanservice-y as other anime, plus...its simply realistic and raw, and I at least appreciate that. The abyss doesn't follow regular cultural and societal rules and expectations. Its uncomfortable, but in a way I'm glad it's there and acknowledged. Although I'd still rather it wasn't there, since it's mostly played for humor.
