The scene where Phos is crying in the window is the equivalent of a stab to the heart.... It just goes to show that "Change" she wen't through to become powerful truly came at a serious price. Unlike her old self, she now is "Strong", and is extremely efficient, but at the cost of her personality, and that feeling of safety when you have friends. These wide, negative space shots whisper in how lonely everyone is. They may live on the same island, sleep in the same house, follow the same man, and fight the same enemies they are alone. I’ve noticed that most of the gems don’t actually care for eachother, only the work that they do. At the beginning, Phos was their sister, but she was useless, so everyone brushed her off. The other gems only started really talking to her after she got her new legs. Then, she was fast enough to be useful. The gems don’t ask eachother about how they’re doing, what’s new, do you want to hang out sometime. People could’ve talked to Cinnabar, but she couldn’t do any work, so they made the excuse of staying away from her poison to never see her again. What makes Phos so different is her empathy, that she CARES about the other gems. She talks to Cinnabar and promises her a new job. She can hear the snail people, and she returned them to their home. She joined Antarc on his winter watch even though she didn’t have to, she just figured that Antarc was lonely. That’s where her powers come from. She can be mended with anything, because she is able to feel for that person, put her self in their shoes, care about them as they are. Pap has almost the same ability, but he lacks a large part of empathy needed to truly bond with anything, so he can only briefly wake up. This however is much farther that any other gems go. No one else cares for eachother, so they are alone. TLDR: The empty feelings of the shots emphasizes just how alone everyone is.
this is an excellent comment but i want to correct you on the pronouns of the gems as they are not humans and don't have actual gender compared to characters like kongo (he/him) and ventricosus (she/her, but I'm not sure about this one) so its better to use they/them to refer to all gems instead of using gendered pronouns for them. All of the gems use masculine terms for themselves and each other (boku is a masculine way to say "I" and they call each other brothers instead of sisters) bc Japanese don't have a gender neutral term ^^
I truly never realized this! I guess it is hinted at when Phos was getting taken away after helping the Admirables when they say "now how can I hate you when you say that" or something along that line.
0:57 this is my favorite shot in the entire anime. The way the gold parts to look like a flower blooming, followed by the enraged look on phos’ face ... 10/10
This show was such a gem. It's not only super rare to see so much care put into shot composition in TV anime, but also in how they made full use of 3DCG. I have no idea what this anime is about, but with the brilliant choice of music combined with images such as 0:28 makes me feel lonely desolation with feeling so small compared to the giant environment. Is this an impression of feeling hopeless at 0:28?
Late reply, but it's connected to the shot before. The man in the middle had some kind of "vision" with the other figures which are actually the enemies in the show, and it kind of tries to show the confusion of why he (leader of the protagonists ) would see a vision of the enemies. He seemed to be a bit confused or concerned about it himself.

I feel as though these shots that the show portrays is somewhat double-edged. On the one hand, as another comment mentioned, the greater shots of the ambiance of negative space emphasizes loneliness. But I'd like to think that the greater shots of the landscapes and the minimal size of the gems in these moments falls more into the story's greater philosophy of existence: self-worth in a larger world. Ironic, where, in a world where humanity doesn't exist, we have gems that live like human beings. Ironic because these gems, in human terms are valuable stones that embellish jewellery and all the material things. gems and gold are often associated with materialism and how these precious minerals are part of the physical world we cannot take with us when we die. But Hoseki no kuni's gems are humanoid creatures who have lives, thoughts and feelings. These living gems do not have a permanent death, but easily break and mend. But even as these gems with souls live and breath like people, their existence are no more than specks against the greater sublime of nature and to an extent, the universe. A lot of Buddhism is heavily applied to this story, and one the many lessons of Buddhism is the question of suffering and self-worth. Phos's story, especially. How do you define yourself when the world will find many ways to break you? These gems see worth in themselves because their master loves them. But what are they, outside of their master's love? How do they define themselves outside of the scope of their innate battle prowess or their intelligence, beauty and perseverance? The many negative spaces throughout the entire series not only speak of the gems' loneliness. These spaces speak of the harshest and most cruel realities in life: that they are no more than a spec against the greater frame of the larger, empty world. It is only in their joys, their triumphs, their suffering and loss that make them a valuable existence in this empty world.
