I really enjoyed this video. I'm 62 years old, recently retired, and had never had a rye in my life! Since watching this video I've tried the Old Forester, the Rare Breed, the Sagamore and the Bullet. I've been missing out. These ryes are great. 🙂
I appreciate your attitude of "Whatever you like to drink, however you like to drink it." So here's one for you: My favorite rye drink, so far, is Bullet; mixed half-and-half with Diet Dr. Pepper, on the rocks. :-) I'd love to see the look on Trenton's face when you tell him about that one! :-) Keep up the good work!

I got some Pikesville awhile ago based on your recommendation and it really is a winner.
Back in the '80s there were only two or three ryes generally available--Old Overholt, Wild Turkey, and Beam. Rye just wasn't a thing back then, but it's really exploded in popularity in the past few years.

First time trying rye, Old Forester then Bulleit. I was expecting OF to be the better, but Bulleit was hands down the winner for me. On a block of ice with just a couple of teaspoons of water it mellowed perfectly. With just two drops, (literally,) of bitters and one half teaspoon of Cinzano, the Bulleit released the most pleasant orange peel and bakery spice flavors with great aroma.
The Bulleit was the best Manhattan ever for me, the Old Forester, meh, not so much. Really, I was surprised at the difference. Your videos led me to try rye for the first time, love it, thanks. I really enjoy your shows.

They're very nice and helpful but their selection is small which is why I watched your video before I went. The lady from Bulleit was there so I picked up the Bulleit rye, and I got a free t-shirt too. I tried a little as soon as I got home and it was very nice. A very strong list. I was definitely surprised the the Dickel, especially since you omitted the Knob Creek Rye which has excellent bang for the buck. I could see the Sagamore, because I got the straight rye and was surprised by how tasty and smooth it was (even if it doesn't have a lot of oomph flavorwise). I'd think some Whistle Pig would get honorable mention. The 10 year private barrel, barrel select (Total Wine) is excellent (and much better than the ordinary 10 yr small batch)...although it's gone up in price and is now tickling $100. The Whistle Pig Piggyback 6 yr is an affordable option. The James E. Pepper 1776 straight rye 100 proof rye is a great, affordable, MGP option.

Hey Kurt, love the video! I do love me some rye. I did see you missed my Great-Grandma's 100% cereal rye recipe, which is known as Sextro Rye. We are a small batch rye distillery that veterans owned and made the way whiskey was made in the 1920s. She was a true American that used whiskey to save our family's farm. Her legacy is part of the Templeton bootleggers who were known to have sold rye whiskey to Al Capone during prohibition. I can guarantee you have never had a rye like this, so lets take trip back into history with Sextro Rye. Cheers!!

I have seen you have Willet in past episodes and based on that, I picked up a few at the distillery at my first visit last month (can't find in MI). As usual, great video, and one that I've been looking forward too. I've has most of these but not all of them. I love the Pikesville, OF and New Riff. Been wanting to try the Sangamore and the Wild Turkey. A few others that I would add to the list of great Rye Whiskey's for the money that I really like are Rossville Union, (I have a Binny's store pick that is just fantastic $54.99), Blaum Bros. (Galena, IL distillery $49.99) and Russell's Reserve Single Barrel Rye ($65.99). Would love to see you guy's do a blind rye tasting with these too.

I prefer ryes, myself. About half of those aren’t available in our area. The others I have had. Of those, the Sazerac didn’t move me. Plus, it is about $10 more than the price you quoted. One I enjoy that you didn’t mention is Jack Daniels Select, both regular and barrel strength. May have to pick up a Pikesville this week.

@DavidColgan, finally someone mentions Jack Daniels Rye. I just saw it at the Staters Brothers Grocery today $19.99 I was so tempted to grab it but I chickened out, not really knowing which ones are worth the money. I had a shot of Deadwood with my nephew at the bar. I told him I thought it had like a Butter Rum flavor. He said, "Yes! That's it!"
I basically stuck to beer for the past 20 or 30 years. But I'm 64 now and think I might be old enough to handle some whiskey.😅

Happy to see Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye on the list. Was making a trip from kentucky to Indianapolis a couple weeks ago and stopped over at the Hard Truth distillery. I tried basically every whiskey they had and to me the standout for the price was the sweet mash rye barrel strength uncut and unfiltered. Had to pick it up, especially since they don't have it at my liquor store in maryland. Also got the toasted coconut rum.

    Great lineup of Ryes.
Dickel Rye is a fair suggestion. I realize some dislike any Dickel. But where Dickel Rye is spectacular is in an Old Fashioned. Especially during the Fall/Winter. You may want to give that a try. But give it a taste before you add any garnish like citrus or orange so you can really appreciate how unique this rye is. Then add your garnish. It surprised me. Dickel rye stands out fantastically in this drink 👍
Bonus - Eagle Rare has that same effect for me in an old fashioned. I know it’s hard to find in some areas - but exceptional in an old fashioned. Thanks for all your great reviews 🥃

Great video as I love rye whiskey. I'm not a whiskey snob as I can't afford to be but I still have a problem with all the hoopla around whiskeys that tout "recipes handed down from generations...only to find out it's an MGP product..like Bulleitt, Dickel, Three Chord, Coppercraft, on and on. Great rye to try Eastern Kille Straight Rye out of Grand Rapids, Michigan ($40 a fifth in Meijer) and Dorothy Arzner rye from Francis Ford Coppola in California (about $50 in California). Hard to find, maybe not available in most areas but at least they're not MGP products and very tasty
