      They know this because they know where they aren't. By subtracting where they are from where they aren't, or where they aren't from where they are (whichever is greater), they obtain a difference, or deviation. The Navigators use deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the ship from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is.

    One thing that's interesting about navigator elders is that their "mutations" are pretty uniform. They don't change in unpredictable ways like you normally see with warp exposure, they all tend towards fish-like features, which suggests that it's not mutation at all but rather a fixed feature of their bloodlines.
    It is of course no accident that the way navigator elders are described (enlarged heads, fish-like appearance, limbs changing into flippers...) pretty closely matches their primary inspiration from _Dune..._

    Always kind of wondered how the Navigators aboard Space Marine cruisers were treated. Unlike the TechMarine who has become a battle brother or the librarian who presumably can act as an Astropath, I would assume navigators are still tied to their house and not made into a Space Marine himself. Whatever their origins, the Navigators today are a glorious and esteemed organisation, loyal to the Imperium and stalwart in their faith. The peculiar powers of the Navigators can only be perserved by intermarriage: breeding with mundane Humans eliminates the special abilities. The one part the Imperium tries so very hard to gloss over is the fact that there was a time before the Navigator Houses, when humanity didn't require their aid in traversing the warp. The Dark Age/Golden Age was a time before the Navigators. Perhaps it wasn't necessary. Perhaps machines did the navigating.
    It was, after all, a time when you could travel in the warp and leave the window shields open: there was nothing to harm you other than the feeling of being unsettled by the weird colors outside.
    It's only after the Long Night that Navigators, and shutting the window ports to keep the sight of the warp out became a real thing.
    It all started on Terra. I imagine that as the Imperium reclaimed worlds, if they found 'heretical devices' that would displace Navigators from their prime, lucrative place, that they'd be destroyed. The deal the Emperor made with the Houses would assure that.
    And then the myth that you absolutely required a navigator to travel the now turbulent Warp solidified, and became the ONLY way.

    • @pancakeandwaffle4849
      @pancakeandwaffle4849 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I mean wasn’t the reason traversing through the Warp was possible back then because the chaos gods weren’t as strong? I always assumed that navigators were needed not because you can’t go from point A to point B without them but because you can’t go from point A to point B without being nomed by chaos without them

    • @dobyk5338
      @dobyk5338 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the only thing we know is that Navigators were created during the Dark Age and were widely used when the warp engine was invented. At that time they were an independent faction (essentially a Guild) which was later taken over by various mercenary forces. Later on the Emperor unified them, took them under his protection and began the Great Crusade. But Navigators were absolutely used during the Dark Age.

    • @Kalebfenoir
      @Kalebfenoir 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dobyk5338 they might have been used as one of many ways of traversing the Warp. But they gained their stranglehold on travel after Long Night and after the Emperor unified Terra and Mars.
      Given how many other races seem to traverse the warp in their own ways, Navigators don't necessarily NEED to be a thing. But it's the only thing the Imperium has known for so long, and they're protected under the laws, as well as deliberately crushing any THOUGHT of using other ways.
      If someone suggested making a cogitator to plot through the warp, even in jest, the Navigators would have them killed. Make it look like an accident. End the threat to their monopoly

    • @dobyk5338
      @dobyk5338 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kalebfenoir as I said, Navigators were highly influential during the dark age because they were reliable guides through the warp. But you're also right that they didn't have a monopoly on warp travel: there actually were cogitators out there who could navigate the warp, they just weren't as powerful as a navigator (you can't get as far). I think theoretically an AI could perform this duty but then you get into the issues of how an AI can even begin to understand something as crazy as the warp.

    This was a fun video! I've been a fan of 40k for about 20 years, but my ability to actually PLAY the table top minis game in that time has been spotty, at best, which has left me to appreciate other elements, like the lore, and RPG games. My favorite among those was FFG's Rogue Trader, and one of my favorite things in that line was the Navigators. I love Rogue Traders because they flip the setting on its head. They are "only human", same as any Guardsman, but gain access to all the best things the Imperium can still muster. They can show what the upper limits of human achievement might look like. Navigators are similar in that, too me, being different, but being excused, and wielding resources, and some authority, that few others ever will. That they can also catch you in the gaze of their third eye, and kill you, is fun extra.😊 If somebody else was already running the Rogue Trader, i could always fall back on playing a Navigator. The first character idea I wrote up for RT was a Navigator, and her story was central to the future of herself, her family, and the Rogue Trader dynasty her House served among, so getting more fun lore dumps is great!

    Relationship between Emperor and Navigators is quite similar to that you see represented in dune universe as it is in warhammer. Although in warhammer, there is a more finally balance relationship of mutual benefit and necessity tying them together and creating a good working relationship that serves both their interests and end goals.

      Navigators were created during the Dark Age of Technology and we're originally owned by trade and industrial cartels. At some point they became an independent faction and somehow survived the Age of Strife. Truly a remarkable subspecies.

Whatever their origins, the Navigators today are a glorious and esteemed organisation, loyal to the Imperium and stalwart in their faith. The peculiar powers of the Navigators can only be preserved by intermarriage: breeding with mundane Humans eliminates the special abilities. The factor had led to the development of the closely-related Navigator families and the Navis Nobilite as a whole." -- Preface, Hostoria Et Structura Re Navis Nobilite
