I like the part in the Dark Imperium books where Guilliman was just overruling stuff in the Codex and his sons were just going along with it right there, despite more than a few of them being historically rather conservative.
Well do you disagree with your “father” or just roll with it as the same guy that created the holy codex telling you certain parts don’t work the in current situation?
Guilliman created the Codex and he has every right to revise his own work. I mean, Guilliman's main trait is organization and efficiency, when he sees something that works better, he copies it, dissects it, improves upon it and deploys it to make something better and before his untimely death he had every intention of revising the Codex Astartes, it just took him 10000 years more than he anticipated.
Yeah I liked how Guilliman was written in the Dark Imperium trilogy. Makes him more relatable and shows his acknowledgment of his failings. Portions of the Codex being one of them.
He did not anticipate the Imperium degrading so much, since he wrote the Codex at a time when things were dire, but the Imperial Truth still held sway. Sadly, he has had to edit much to fit in with the current state of the Imperium.
I just finished an RP with a great GM, and it lasted almost 11 months with 2-4 hour campaigns once a week. We used as many great Space Marine characters as we could find to keep expanding the scope of the game we were doing... and yet, there was always an even *better* person we wanted to introduce, as both player and game master! I love how marines are written, even as much as I wish the IG was given more love. This setting deserves better than its current masters...

Only a madman knows no fear. A warrior knows what fear is, he feels it in his stomach, he understands fear better than any other mortal can. What makes us strong is that we have conquered fear, overcome it not once but many times, over and over again, until the process has become instinctive. but no matter how many battles you fight and how many victories you win, your fear will never completely leave you. Learn to live with that fear. Learn to master your fear. But never forget that there are things in this universe that even you cannot face and live, abominations so terrible that their very appearance will sear the flesh from your face and shrivel your eyes. Such things cannot be fought, and to confront them would be nothing but a futile waste of life. In those situations remember your vows to serve the Emperor, and remember also that you serve him best alive and not sacrificed upon the altar of vain glory. -Memorum Libris de Petronius Caligarus, Ultramarines Captain

Love this franchise, hate it, or everything in between... Gotta admit it's pretty cool an badass when even the Librarians and I'm assuming the bookkeepers and even Chapter Janitors are trained and expected to be able to thoroughly and seriously kick serious ass. The 2 erasures was probably the original Traitorous Legions. As if they was merely wiped out in battles an conflicts the records of their existence and services woulda been at least preserved
@@tonywebb1403 I mean, technically some of the chapter librarians, do in fact keep watch over artifacts and relics, some of which are books of history or lore on their chapter.
The Adeptus Astartes are a double-edged sword. On the one hand, they're a reliable super-soldier branch of the Imperium's military, the tip of the spear. On the other hand, each chapter does whatever it wants and follows the Imperial agenda on its own terms, and they can just as easily fall to Chaos and join the enemy, bringing all that technology and equipment over to the enemy side.
They also vary heavily between noble heroes with the purest of souls (Salamanders, Lamentes) and complete bloodthirsting sociopaths with zero regard for human life (Marines Malevolent, Flesh Tearers) more often than not somewhere in the middle.

Few points: Chapter Serfs are not indentured servants in all cases. In many they are failed aspirants but want to be there. Use of the Codex Astartes is entirely voluntary (at the chapter level) It also was not created along side the Astartes but after by one of the Primarchs (Generals) to help limit the power of a single Chapter. Prior to that a Chapter, then called Legion was 100,000+ strong and would be a much larger threat if one turned renegade. There are a number of chapters that do not adhere to the codex or only in some fashion. It is less "diverged" and just never accepted it.
1) He mentioned that the Codex was created by Guilleman after the Horus Heresy, literally stated it in the video. Near the end when he covered the Heresy, which suggests you did not make it that far..... 2) And no, the Codex Astartes is not entirely voluntary, Chapters are supposed to, by law, follow the Codex to at least an extent. This is EXACTLY why the Space Wolves and Black Templars spend so much time hiding their true numbers for example, to avoid censure for straying too far from the Codex. A Certain amount of leeway is permitted, but BOTH those Chapters have gone well beyond their allowed numbers and would, if it could be proven by the Inquisition, face censure and penance at best, and possible extermination at worst..... Of course, what the Chapters are supposed to do and what they actually do often diverge, but if breaking the Codex by a considerable margin Chapters DO try to hide that fact, and that right there indicates beyond all doubt that it is NOT in fact voluntary....
@@alganhar1 Cite where by law they are supposed to? The entire Space Wolves chapter... is just the legion. It isn't hidden. Space Wolves and Black Templars are examples of this. Chapters that don't follow it can be viewed with suspicion or disdain but they cannot be sanctioned for not being compliant. 1. Many chapters are not compliant outside of total members 2. Numbers are also not something that receives sanctions. Cite an example where this has happened and not been related to actual warfare actions (like actual heretical behavior) @ point 1.... I never said he didn't. My point is at the start of the video he says it was created alongside the astartes, which is incorrect.
Games Workshop has very cleverly added just enough noble bright to the grim dark of 40K to convincingly explain how the Imperium can survive the current travails of the setting. As terrible as the grim darkness of the far future is, the emergence of the Primaris Marines and the return of the Avenging Son ensures that hope for the future of humanity yet endures. People like to mock Guilliman, but among the Primarchs he is actually the best suited to oversee the regeneration of the Imperium and the restoration of its rule across the galaxy. The time of the Era Indomitus calls not only for a superlative warrior, leader, and strategist without peer, but also for a figure with the logistical, administrative and political skills of a nation builder, one with the ability and vision to reforge the Imperium into a more functional and efficient society. The architect of the governmental systems of Macragge and the 500 worlds is extremely well suited for those challenges.
@@grisharotov9735 Pretty much. The Classical era Roman and Greek influences on the iconography of the Ultramarines and the architecture and societal structure of Macragge and the Five Hundred Worlds is no coincidence after all.

The Black Templars never accepted or followed Girlyman's Codex. Oh wait... GW retconned them into the virtual opposite of what they were. Now the are The Deep Dark Purple Templars who are just like Codex Marines except with an odd Troop choice, but otherwise field Scout and Devastator squads they never had before. Insane autistics that now worship Empy and whine about why Empy took their witches away. Instead of the only loyalists who still followed the Emperor's Nikea Decree honoring him as their ancestor.
The most amusing thing... Both the original and retconned versions of the Black Templars would have unequivocally rejected Primaris Marines.

It is like Jesus coming back to us telling us not to follow certain bible BS texts

Ah, yes! Our favorite warriors of humanity are under the spotlight once more!
Few points:
Chapter Serfs are not indentured servants in all cases.
1. Many chapters are not compliant outside of total members
2. Numbers are also not something that receives sanctions. Cite an example where this has happened and not been related to actual warfare actions (like actual heretical behavior)
@ point 1.... I never said he didn't. My point is at the start of the video he says it was created alongside the astartes, which is incorrect.
Wounded gaurdsman -"The emperor protects!!"
