It is the same bodyshell and interior design but absolutly everything else is different. It's like sayng a M3 has a 316i body. Meanwhile I guess Scotty says his sporty celica has actually the same suspension, steering column, engine as the Corolla. Look for exemple my RS has a incredibly precise steering, move it a quarter of an inch and the car reacts, try that in a normal diesel version and you can steer left right and the car has no idea. Take the clutch, in regular ones you can start them only from the clutch, in the sport ones you press the clutch just a bit and the throttle a bit more, it conencts way faster. And then it's the way they take corners, in the top sport versions you can take corners at 110 mph while the cheap ones don't have that even as top speed. They are very different cars. Would I buy something like this if I was american, no, I'd probably have something like a Camaro Z28, but here we have taxes that make pretty much impossible to afford cars with medium sized engines by american standards.

I live in Georgetown, Ky, where the Camry's have been made since 1989. They have the very first Camry ever built sitting in the Visitors Center. It has less than 100 miles on it. The only time it ever leaves the Plant is when they take it to the Kentucky State Fair and even then, they have it brought in on a flat bed. They treat that thing like Gold.
They also make the Solara, Avalon, The Rav4 and the Lexus ES300. They also have the first one of each of those sitting in the Vistors Center along with the 1 millionth Camry made. Also used to make the Venza but they discontinued it.

Each went for over 200K, which is amazing considering how he treated them. He liked them better than the Subarus of that era. They couldn't have been that unreliable.

There was a class-action lawsuit over the oil sludging issue. It happens to the 1MZ-FE V6 engine, which was used in late 90s/early 2000s Camry/Lexus ES, Lexus RX, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander. I believe the later models with the VVT-i system are less prone to it. Still, it's very important to change the oil exactly on time, and use synthetic oil in these engines. A friend of mine got burned by a 1999 Sienna. They can last a long time, but beware buying a used one without oil change records. A few other brands had the same issue around the same years..Chrysler, VW, Audi, Saab.

Blew the timing belt at 200,000, put in a new one with a $100 kit, and still going to this day. Gotta freaking love that, blow the timing belt and nothing breaks. Toyota not a sports car company?..hmmm Toyota MR2, Celica GT4, Supra say otherwise...then of course Lexus RC, LC and LFA. I'd also argue that the 86 is much more than just a rebadged Subaru, that was a true collaborative effort with Subaru and has been a commercial success & is a very pure ports car as well as a good reliable car. Even the new Supra. I'm as disappointed as anyone about the BMW engine and transmission, but Toyota has has significant input into the development of that car, it's not JUST a rebadged BMW..although I wish they just used the Lexus 3.6 V6 twin turbo and their 8 or 10 speed auto.

The 81 moved to Alaska where the salty roads rusted out the engine mounts and then they had to get rid of it. Then my brother and I bought an 85 and 88. My brother got 350K on his until he finally put the wrong oil filter on it and it leaked and the engine blew up. I think I sold my 88 with about 180K. The people who bought my Tercel drove it for several more years after paying me only $1000 for it. Everybody got their money's worth out of that little car. Mine was the only one of the three with carb issues. We bought them because they were all we could afford at the time. I remember paying $6500 for my new 88 Tercel. The moral of the story is that all car brands have problems. It's bound to happen with all the engineering that goes into them. You really need to research the exact make/model/year before buying, and get a used car inspected. Very good maintenance can minimize the effects of engineering problems, but that doesn't mean those problems don't exist.

Scotty, I think you left one car off the list. In 1967, my mother bought a brand new Toyota Corona and it was a lemon. She started having all kinds of problems with it 6 months after she bought it. My dad always had Datsuns back then and they always ran good. My first new car was a 1977 Datsun B210 Honey Bee that was a great first car. I do love Toyotas. I have a 99 Tacoma and a 2003 Camry that still run great.

So, they invented a new brand, targeted the marketing to younger people, and sold basic affordable cars with at least a little bit of character.
