  • In this episode, we'll take a look at the new Nikon D7100. The top of the line for DX size sensors, this is quite a machine. Low light performance, sharpness and video are certainly highlights. Join me as we take a closer look at this wonderful camera.

    As an 'old' retired guy who once dabbled in 35mm film photography with a rudimentary yet fully capable darkroom ... I chose the D7100 a year or two ago with which to enter the realm of digital photography. Absolutely no regrets and I enjoy shooting with this camera every time I take it afield. This l'il beast is *SO* capable it blows my mind and I'm never at a loss to use it. I get others feel the same about their camera(s) of choice which is precisely the point. LUV the D7100, learning as I go, and thoroughly enjoying the experience(s). Cheers for a great review and will very much enjoy learning experientially as well as via tutelage such as is available here. Cheers!

      Great review. I have had the fine D7000 since new. In looking at 7200/7500/5600 models, this D7100 is my pick. Support for legacy lenses is a huge deal for me. There are some fine fast lenses out there, why not use them?? Maybe a D500 would be a second cam, but for now, this is great.

    There is no physical possibility for D7100 to change the aperture during video recording. It's dictated by the way camera is constructed. Whenever the mirror is lifted and the sensor is exposed, aperture locks mechanically. To change it, mirror must flip back and you are losing live view. Same for D600. Other than that, a great review.

    • @rlwings
      @rlwings 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really? Then why can the D750 do it? ... Answer: Nikon purposely dumming down their lower models in order to create purchasing motivation toward more expensive models... They could fix it in minutes by updating the firmware if they really wanted to... How do you know that it's "physically impossible" - Are you a mechanical Engineer? ... Most likely the mechanics are exactly the same between models. It's all about money.

    Great Review! Not quite a year ago life's circumstances afforded me an opportunity to dip my toe into digital photography after leaving the film/darkroom world in my rear view mirror many, many, years ago. The camera I opted for was a D7100. I continue to use this camera and as of this writing, 4/24/17, it has never let me down. I am enchanted by the results I can attain with such a modestly priced body. Yes, it's 'just' a DX camera yet I find the achievable results, when I do my part, sublime.
    Thanks for such a thorough and sincere review of 'my' camera. ;)
    All the Best

    No, it does NOT replace the D7000, Nikon was very clear about that. Both cameras are still in current production a year and a half after the introduction of the D7100 Also he calls it APC, but it is APS-C. I assume he is nervous or in quite a hurry!

    Very good point. Also, when you are actually taking a photo outside of live view, the aperture doesn't change until you take the photo. You change the setting and then the aperture will close to that setting just as the photo is being taken. That's why you need a preview button to see the effect through the viewfinder.

    I agree with the tone of most of the posts before mine. Ted, your strength is the "art" and "philosophy" of photography. I believe that is the reason most of us tune in. There are many, many, many reviews of current cameras as they hit the market. PLease do yourself and all of us a favor and stay with your core strengths and beliefs (i.e., the art and philosophy), that is what makes you unique in the interweb world of cameras.

  • @winedemonium
    @winedemonium 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure you are in two minds about this Ted. You have worked so hard to promote the ART of photography and I dare say that is why the vast majority of your CURRENT viewers are with you. But I will wager this: this will be one of your most-viewed videos, and you will gain a new audience, some of whom will stay on for more of your art-oriented films. That is good for them and good for you. In the meantime you have delivered a fine review, and you won't lose viewers over the occasional review.

    Hi Ted,
    I find that your videos are by far the best videos on photography that I know of. Because of that I fully support this video the same as all the others. Somebody who puts over 130 FREE videos with GREAT content on TH-cam, from which many profitize, should have the right to do a little commercial work as well. In fact, I wouldn't mind if one out of five or ten videos would be of such nature, as long as the others keep the high quality standards that we are used to.
    Best,
    Marko

    if you dont have lots invested in expensive lenses then dont bother with the D600 because you wont notice much difference in quality but theprice is much higher, it has also had a lot of issues since its release. The D700 was awesome but for me the new video frame reates, new autofocus system, and better low light performance is plenty enough reason for me to upgrade.

    Nice video. one of my favorite features on the D7100 is the Spot White balance. Very easy and convenient. Auto distortion is good but slows down the FPS, plus it only works on Nikkor lenses. I was going to go with the D600 but couldn't justify the extra $800.

    I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my d7100. I can't help but smile a little when people talk about noise at higher ISO settings. In film days, ISO400 (ASA, then), was fast. It will be interesting to compare the 7100 at high ISO settings vs. some of my old Ektachrome 400 transparencies that were push-processed to 1600. I'm thinking that when I need the speed, the noise isn't going to be as bad as the old days of graininess...

    For videos, I recommend the 35mm f/1.8G. The lens is cheap and great for various uses. However, if you have a high budget, and you're looking for lenses better than your kit lens, then I would recommend the 17-55mm f/2.8. It cost $1.3K, but has amazing performance.

    I meant the video live view ofcourse :)
    About the compesation in photo live view - live view only raises the mirror but does NOT close the aperture - that's why You don't see any change. In analogy it does close the aperture in video live view, that's why You can't change it while in that view.
    The photo live view closes the aperture either when the "depth of field preview" button is pressed (you can assign it in the menu) or when You take a picture.
    Cheers from Poland :)

  • @PetrKulda
    @PetrKulda 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    sure, you can turn camera in LiveView mode and the mirror goes up. in this mode you can shoot, but focusing is contrast based

  • @randomgeocacher
    @randomgeocacher 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    For manual focus you probably want to change focus screen, modern autofocus screens are pretty hard to focus bellow F/4. You'll experience great improvements with a focus screen designed for precision manual focus. Regarding the camera, Nikon offerings have been amazing lately, while Canon have failed to impress me. However the amount of vintage lenses adaptable to Canon is mind blowing, and Sony NEX even more so, due to shorter lens mounts. And Nikon lenses expensive compared to m42 etc

  • @JohnAldred
    @JohnAldred 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    D200, D300, D300s also have multiple exposures up to 9 or 10 frames. The D7100 is still coming short in a few areas for me. I certainly don't consider it "top of the line". It has its advantages, but it does nothing for me that I can't get out of a D300s. I'll wait for those extras when they finally get around to releasing a D400. Sorry Ted, decent review, but you can tell you don't have much experience with Nikon dslrs. :)

  • @PetrKulda
    @PetrKulda 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    well, i dont if it is problem, its the way it works. DLSR main focusing system is phase based - measuring phase difference it can determine how much to move optical elements in lens to get right focus. Its the like, get distance, compute, send command to lens, and you have focus. Contrast based focusing is looking for contrast in picture. There is none when you dont have focus. So it is trying to move lens elements back and forward - sometimes called "focus hunting".

    Lot of features you're saying "they added" that Nikon dslrs have had for years. My D200 had the same AF dot in the viewfinder for MF lenses, and it'll work with pretty much any lens, not just ai/ai-s., and the D200 & D300s both have higher bracketing options.

The 7100 is on another level entirely - comparable to a BMW. They've since come out with the 7200 but the 7100 is still being sold and it's a great camera and $300 less.

    Not going to get into the full technical details here, but no firmware update can fix the aperture live view "issue". Its like that by design..and the hardware that would require that functionality just isnt in the camera. (sorry if this was already mentioned). A quick google search should yield you a long exhausting elaboration on this.

    If you like low light shooting, why not going for full frame and get the D600 which is far superior in low light shooting?

    i just watched another video of you the other day and it looked as if you colored your hair (grey) maybe you need to check your white balance or change camera brands, wait i just took a picture of me with a new fuji and it made my hair look grey also. Maybe I will buy a D7100 so I can look young and macho like you do in this video. 🥰

    2 SD Cards. They can be used to do 1 Raw and 1 JPEG, Movie to one card, stills to the other, over flow mode.

    Great video! ... Well, its been two years now and Nikon still hasn't fixed the aperture in live view issue yet. In fact, the new D7200 still has the same issue! ... Nikon had a chance to fix this issue at a hardware level and decided not to...Thanks. :(

    Nikon D7100 is still the best value available in the Nikon lineup... even today 3 years later.

    The aperture problem in live view isn't going to get fixed. This was a huge complaint with the D7000 that everyone prayed for a firmware update for, and it never happened. If they didn't update it in the D7100, they're probably not planning on it.

    Firmware has fixed the exposure in live view for stills, when updating the aperture it will no reflect this on the screen, however this is for stills live view only! Firmware c1.01

    Actually, maybe not a bad idea to have separate titles called "The Tech of Photography" Can be kept on the same channel though.

    At the moment a used Canon 5D mark ll has the same price as Nikon D7100. Which one is better in terms of image and video quality? Do you recommend Nikon D600 over 5D mark ll? I do architectural photography.

    Hi Ted,
    I've heard that they have fixed changing aperture during video in D600 already, and in my D800 if you will press "ok" button during "stills live view", it switches between exposition preview on and off, so I believe it may be the same with D7100, give it a try...

    thanks for prompt reply...but, considering I'm Italian, I dont understand well 'focusing is contrast based'
    what kind of problem we have with liveview?

    hello ted, love your review, great job.
    on live view for stills in my opinion its great. its good for low light situation, without need to change higher iso and lower f/..I use that live view , its cool. when i need exposure live view , i just go to video mode live view.. that's what i did on my D800E and D7100.
    sorry for my bad english, i hope u understand what i mean

    Nice Review, I own both the D7000 & the D7100, please explain how you configured the (Fn) button to select your non-CPU lens, I have been unable to accomplish this. Thanks
