+Cristian Mattarei I agree, something in the D7100 on this test also seemed softer but we did the test twice. I have the RAW files and try and look at them next week to see if they tell a different story.
+Stephan Strauss Just checked the RAW on ISO1600 and ISO 3200 - you see a very noticeable difference in sharpness as well. If you watched our D5500 review published recently you see the exact same thing - the image on the new cameras is much sharper than the old D7100 - it is something with either the sensor/processor or maybe the implementation of the OPLF (or lack of OPLF). D5500 review: th-cam.com/video/y8nKGtZ_BWc/w-d-xo.html
Looking at your RAW files, to me D7100 looks better at any ISO than D7200. D7200 as slightly but just slightly more details and probably has better jpegs strait out of camera due to newer processor, but since I shoot RAW I'd always choose D7100 over D7200. If you don't shoot video and don't need wifi and bigger buffer, there really is no reason to spend more money on D7200.
You should always keep the plastic cover inserted in your hotshoe's. The camera is not weather resistant without it. It also helps keep the contacts clean allowing the flash to operate without irregularities.
i pretty sure the D7100 jpeg has noise reduction ON which mean reduce image details. Also the D7100 image look flat color and contrast, due to different picture control profile. Next time compare the RAW file instead
who still have like me the D7100 in 2024? It still works fine for me with my sigma 17-55 f2.8 but I still have that concern Werther to get a nikkor 28mm f2.8D or a 28mm AI lens I wonder if I even need it since the sigma have that range at f2.8 also
I have the D7100, and use it very often. I love my camera. I have a Sigma 17 50 mm 2.8 too. I’ve traveled to San Diego two weeks ago and enjoyed using it. However, when i was walking on the street, close to Gaslamp there were times when i felt insecure because of the homeless and addicted to drugs on the streets, and i changed the lens to my 24mm 2.8d, and the camera transformed into a compact and reliable camera. The quality of the image of the 24mm 2.8d its good, especially at F4, and 5.6.
@@fernieto84 Thanks for answering me so a 24 or 28mm f2.8 as a prime lens is better just for the conpactness but doesn't have a better image quality than the Sigma so I will save that money then
In spite of what all the TH-cam hits will tell you, the D7200 has better ISO performance. A world better ? no, but noticeable difference and the AF is slightly better. I own both and I love them equally but the d7200 is a better camera.
The D7200 is a newer camera (than the D810) - we are currently testing it against the D7500 and it is an interesting review (to be published soon). From our testing, the D810 still has better sensitivity in our opinion (not sure how you tested) but the difference isn't huge - the D850 will bring a jump forward according to the info that we have (although it will have another extra 10MP) which is impressive.
Excellent Comparison Lensvid, I have upgraded from D7100 to D7200, and there is a lot of performance and Image quality difference which you have demonstrated and explained beautifully.
I had the D7100 before I plan to buy the d500 this year but for now I plan to buy the D7100 or d7200 im leaning towards the D7100 because more savings on that one
If you talking about the ISO test images than they have been all shot with a Nikon manual 50mm f/1.8 lens (both D7100 and D7200 and yes there is a large size difference in the file).
Hi! Thank you for such a detailed comparison but, it was about JPG quality, how about RAW quality, is there big difference in noise and image quality in general?
People in the comments asked about RAW and we provided some examples in dropbox (it isn't available any more - this was a year ago). The difference is 1+ stops.
i bought a lens eye cup ki and it came with a round one, in fact i got 2 of them cuz i didn't want glue on my camera and i put one on my 750 also. they fit as tight as the ones on my high end stuff.
This video was posted a year ago so we can't really do anything about the sound now - maybe try watching it on a different platform (laptop/desktop with or without earphones - it should work - over 13k people watched it and they seem to do fine).
In a few minutes you will be able to see two folders (18 images total) in this link - I'll keep it up for 24 hours so you can maybe download them if you like - Let me know that it worked: www.dropbox.com/sh/xal1qdt5h2m9k9t/AACGDBur4mKrk2ptS7QToMNUa?dl=0
Thank you for good comparison of these models. in Russian language of such reviews simply no Say please what model it is better to take on 2018 or d7200 of D7100 ?
Good evening !! Thank you to you for an answer. Take off more often than video with such detailed comparison of technique I think for many such video will profit very . Hello to you from Republic of Belarus
I thought I was going crazy here when looking at the image comparisons until I notice the files were JEPGs. Both images both 6000 x 4000 but one is 11.4mb and the other is 16.5mb and guess what? The larger file has more detail! Well I was really shocked by that result. What kind of serious photographer shoots JPEGs anyway?
+Jibon Khan sure thing. If you didn't check the written review it is worth looking at - you can see the ISO test more clearly and there are some video samples and more.
I found the RAW link below: www.dropbox.com/sh/xal1qdt5h2m9k9t I loaded paired shots at ISO 1600 and 6400 into Photoshop ACR to compare them to your descriptions of the corresponding JPEG images in this video. Using the same white balance for all shots, I found the D7100 shots were consistently 0.15 EV brighter than the D7200 shots. After making that correction, the images from both cameras were virtually identical, with just a bit more contrast in each D7100 shot compared to the D7200 shot at the same ISO. Noise levels were also virtually the same. In short: JPEG comparisons, don't waste your time
I own both and can honestly say I prefer the image quality / processing on my older D7100, Maybe because the D7200 uses a Sony sensor (which I didnt know until a couple of weeks ago) wondered why I was getting results like my Sony A6000 (worse noise control) makes it smudgy rather than a fine grain like the older Nikons did in high ISO... Shame
***** It's weird, I just think the images shot at same settings look so much cleaner and sharp outta my D7100 than my D7200, And everyone on forums seems to think it has a Sony built sensor for the D7200 but the D7100 was Toshiba back then for sure, I really dont know... Just dont think its worth the upgrade anyone thinking of going from D7100 to D7200 i wouldnt bother
You guys forgot about the Samsung NX-1 - also APS-C camera, 28mp, BIS, 15 FPS, 4K internally and a LOT more improvements over the Nikon or Canon equivalents. Anyway, thanks for the review. Very interesting.
+gustavo campos We didn't forget. The NX1 is not a DSLR - we talked about the best all around DSLR not the best all around camera. The NX1 is a very interesting camera technologically but has a very limited lens line and quite a few other issues (its also used to be more expensive but that is besides the point).
The ComicExplorer Yeah but you get 8fps plus EXPEED 5 image processor. It's got the same image quality as the d500. It has a faster autofocus. I think it's worth the upgrade. I really don't care about the SD card slots.
You should compare the RAWs, because the compression algorithm of JPEGs might be different. In fact, the JPEGs of the D7100 seem softer than normal.
+Cristian Mattarei I agree, something in the D7100 on this test also seemed softer but we did the test twice. I have the RAW files and try and look at them next week to see if they tell a different story.
+Lensvid Do you have already a result for that ? Kind regards from Zuerich

D5500 review:
th-cam.com/video/y8nKGtZ_BWc/w-d-xo.html
They are comparing apples and oranges here, you cant compare 11MB versus 16MB Jpegs here its just silly
As mentioned above - we also tested the RAW we took (we shot both - just shown the JPEG in the video), same results.
Looking at your RAW files, to me D7100 looks better at any ISO than D7200. D7200 as slightly but just slightly more details and probably has better jpegs strait out of camera due to newer processor, but since I shoot RAW I'd always choose D7100 over D7200. Gordon Draskic agree the reason why went with D7100, cheaper then 7200 and no significant advantages over 7100 if you are shooting RAW...
A very helpful and informative video covering some of the other tweaks not mentioned in other reviews. Thank you.
You should always keep the plastic cover inserted in your hotshoe's. The camera is not weather resistant without it. It also helps keep the contacts clean allowing the flash to operate without irregularities.
Please check the Focus on the D7100. The lens is back focusing.
i pretty sure the D7100 jpeg has noise reduction ON which mean reduce image details. Also the D7100 image look flat color and contrast, due to different picture control profile. Next time compare the RAW file instead
We did test raw as well - you just don't see this in the video - below you we were even asked for the RAW files.
from @15:35 i see Jpeg file,
You see Jpeg in the video - we shot JPEG and RAW.
but you show the jpeg file comparison, where is the RAW part in this clip ?
we didn't show it on the clip. but we always shoot RAW & JPEG and I looked at the files - it is the same thing.

I think it was either the aperture priority or the iso on liveview mode on the D7100 did they fixed that on the D7200
I am not sure what you are asking - can you clarify?
When in liveview mode the D7100 could not change the iso in video I want to know if the d7200 has the same problem
I am holding the D7100 in my hand in LV and changing the ISO...
Maybe it was the aperture in liveview mode while recording video either or you could not change during video recording in liveview mode
I had the D7100 before I plan to buy the d500 this year but for now I plan to buy the D7100 or d7200 im leaning towards the D7100 because more savings on that one
Eye cap ring, same problem on the D750. Replacement at B & H has a better design than the original
You tested images quality by shooting with manual focus?
This review was done almost a decade ago so it's really hard to remember but generally yes we always test IQ with MF.
very well done and detailed. i'm convinced
are pics taken at same focal lenght? There are mayor differences in file size-
If you talking about the ISO test images than they have been all shot with a Nikon manual 50mm f/1.8 lens (both D7100 and D7200 and yes there is a large size difference in the file).

can't listen to what you are saying, if you could increase the volume or speak louder it would help.
This video was posted a year ago so we can't really do anything about the sound now - maybe try watching it on a different platform (laptop/desktop with or without earphones - it should work - over 13k people watched it and they seem to do fine).
+Lensvid They didn't do so well, I can barely hear you
The only suggestion that I have for you is to try on a different platform (try your smartphone or laptop or desktop with speakers) - should work well.
could you upload the RAW files for people to do the comparison themselves?
m... this review was almost a year ago. If more people will ask here or on the site I'll do an upload (RAW are large files and it is a bit complex).
I agree. im trying to figure which one to buy but id like to pixel peep on my own. so this is more of a personal request. could you help me with that?
Let me check.

The D7100 is now pretty much obsolete - the D7200 is our recommended mid-range DSLR.

Best Review video ever
Some remarks in comparison to D7000 would be useful as well
+Stephan Strauss We don't have one to compare and it is a very old camera by now...
comparing iso performance based on incamera jpegs? boy, youre probably soo good at tech bruh
lol
Already answered this - see our answer to Cristian Mattarei below.
Thanks master, luckily i havent bought d7000 and d7100....7500 too expensive...so...7200 is ok

ffs video not loud enough
try a different computer / device - on every computer/device that we have tested it sounds perfect.
Erm .... Try turning your volume UP !
SPOILER: JPEG comparisons, don't waste your time

great! i'm now sure to buy the D7100

Depends on the memory card and the exact settings.
I'm getting the d7500.

as you can see on the-ehh
