    This was my first (official) brutality event and I had a great time running my kit through the stages! Having a mono tube with one eye dark-adjusted was really helpful, there wasn't much ambient light but there was generally enough to help with reloads or other close-range tasks like crawling through the tunnel. Thank you to InRange, Forgotten Weapons and all of the squad moms and ROs that helped make this match possible! (And props to whoever designed the patches, they look SICK!)

    7:55 Yes agreed, that smoke issue calls for a silencer.
    This would be maybe the first time that silencers are genuinely useful in a *sport shooting* environment. (obs. quite useful in war/self defense too)
    NODS + IR combo is begging for a silencer to be used :)

    Good review of the stage Karl. The way you talked about the LED versus laser with photonic barriers all makes sense to me now. I’m surprised how well the clarity of digital night vision has came to. Everyone always talks about analog night vision being the way to go because it’s what are military uses but the digital game looks even better now than what it was 5 years ago

    Seeing the original version of the shoothouse was cool. Man I wish it stayed standing. I had a lot of the same problems, just with white light. In some cases, I didn't have enough throw (especially for the long range stuff and the kasarda drill), and I was constantly having smoke problems. Still did better than I thought I would, had a lot of fun and learned a whole lot real quick.

    Suppressor as noise reduction are great, but they are really the best flash hider. It'd be nice to have ammo with low flash and loadings set up to minimize excess burn for the barrel length but reality is the tube takes care of most of that.
    I think one thing that needing supplemental IR light (or white light) for that matter highlights is target identification. It is a 100% valid thing to train passive aiming, it's an invaluable skill set especially in an environment where use of any light gives away your position. However, telling who or what you are looking at is a distinct challenge especially in low/no light even with the best tubes. Very easy to see that even while passive is taking the front seat in NV training most everyone still runs laser, IR and white lights.

    I've been a working dog for quite a while now that recently made the jump to competition. Midnight Brutality got me seriously thinking about establishing a new no/low light dog trial. Something I don't have the financial or institutional support to pull off (you need judges and COs who are willing to work under NODs and can provide their own) but it's still my main ambition for the sport now.
    I've also thought about a 2 Gun style event with K9 components but there're a lot of safety and logistical concerns that need solving first.

    I'd never heard people say the carbon fiber tube wouldn't hold zero. Not sure why they'd think that. But to the point about carbon fiber breaking, the thing I don't like is if it does break, you now risk getting carbon fiber splinters which can just be nasty. Not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it is something to watch out for. Aluminum tends to still be pretty usable when bent.

    • @reidhampton6799
      @reidhampton6799 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @conlex @mybearhands the issue could be uneven heat distribution, thermal bending or “warping” occurs with one side/part expands due to heat while the other side is at lower temp, less heat, does not expand. This is easily seen in warped 3D prints where the heated build plate does this. The hot chamber area of the barrel could cause problems if the thermal expansion of the carbon fiber is uneven. If the carbon fiber is cooler to the touch, the the temp difference (outer edge to area touching chamber) would be greater, making thermal bending more probable.

  • @Sightbain.
    @Sightbain. ปีที่แล้ว +5

    A mawl would have been perfect, the issue is the price but seeing Garand Thumb demonstrate it I can see why its so expensive vs these cheaper options. I also just watched a segment on the trex arms channel about these and it would be interesting to see if the manufacturer could do a dual nod system that basically interlaces frames so you can get a higher frame rate at better resolutions.

    Fascinating, even if all this is way outside anything I could do.
    I am wondering if an easy workaround for the overspill from the lights would be a grid - I use them for photographic lights but I think they're used on scopes to stop reflections/glare from the front element. A series of small diameter tubes stuck together that severely limits spread of light off-axis. I've seen it called a kill-flash? Ideal would be a broad-focus laser as you suggest, or a frensel lens to focus the beam to a sharp spot.

    look up the ENVG-B next gen or what ever long acronym they ended up giving it, but its essentially a gen 4+ nvg tube with a third digital thermal tube in the middle, it overlays the thermal image onto the nvgs like an ecoti, but it also has all the digital features like an opsin. battery life of analog nvgs if you just use the nvgs, thermals, and network + gps functionality and im sure a price tag to match.
    and for bonus points it makes you look like sam fisher.

    Having suppressor on NGSW makes even more sense now if it really helps with the optic cloud bounce back effect. wonder if possible to have emitter farther from cloud would reduce bounce effect but probably be ungainly to have an IR spotlight on an extended arm(like 3-5 feet ) beyond the 'smoke' cloud

    Hey Karl, I’ve watched some of your videos on this new OPSIN night vision device, I’ve been saving up and doing my research on nods and I was looking at a white phosphorus PVS 14 monocular but I’m honestly considering this new device. If you like respawned and didn’t have any of your gear but had your knowledge you do now would you honestly consider this over a PVS14?

    • @InrangeTv
      @InrangeTv  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly would, and have, yes - but I am not saying that's for everyone. The other features and the ability to move through light and no light without concern, along with the "tuning" ability for the settings means this is a great choice, IMO. That said, you may want to opt for the slightly greater light amplification provided by a Gen3 tube, but, as with all things, it's really based on your needs and wants.

    How much difficulty moving was due to the processing lag of the digital nv as opposed to depth perception and peripheral vision? Navigating by camera only can be incredibly disorienting because of the inherent delay between what the sensor sees and what it shows you in real time, even though the recording won't show the delay because it is not rendering the sensor data in real time.

    The commentary on getting your settings right for your night vision device sounds like a cop out for the difficulties of using digital. Analog really only has focus and gain. Gain also doesn’t even have to be perfect on modern auto gating tubes or even with older ABC tubes. Maxing out gain will give a perfectly usable image in almost all conditions, also plenty of modern tubes have auto gain making it even less important.

    • @trioptimum9027
      @trioptimum9027 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The power requirements would be rather higher, and the safety issues for lasers would be... serious. UV lasers would be a very serious danger to any eyes in the vicinity. Also if you've ever seen blacklights in action, you'd know that a LOT of things light up in UV illumination. You don't need special gear to know if somebody's pointing a blacklight at you, just a cotton t-shirt or some badly-washed hotel sheets. (Going deeper into the UV spectrum might alleviate that problem somewhat, I'm not sure, but it would make the power and safety issues much more serious.)

    Would it give you depth perception?

    • @trioptimum9027
      @trioptimum9027 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eh. Two-eye NVGs exist for pilots and such, and apparently they help, but... Depth perception past 5-10 feet isn't mostly about binocular vision, it's mostly about your brain doing a lot of processing on things like color, shadows, focal distance, and how things move as you move your head around. NVGs blow that to hell: color is weird at best, shadows are off, focal distance is completely blown because your eyes are focused on a screen right in front of your head instead of focusing on objects at different distances, and even parallax is going to be a little off from what your brain is expecting (you're moving your head oddly, and the perspective is changing from a point several inches in front of your eye, not from the eye).
      Now, if you're trying to use night vision to pick up the right screwdriver from your workbench, binocular vision would be HUGE. But out past arm's length, it doesn't matter much.

    Will an echo binary trigger install in a KE 15 lower? Will you make a video on it? Will the echo trigger work with a cmmg echo 22LR concersion bolt in this reciever? How easy is the installation of echo trigger in WWSD lower? Thanks big pockets for gear testing.
