Great video; years ago in the Alaskan bush I would always build tarp shelters either using a bowie knife or small hatchet. A long fire heated the entire length of my body and would at times even use this shelter in subzero temperatures. I always stayed warm, but sometimes used a lot of wood. I would cut dead standing trees for firewood, burn them in half, then pull the halves into the fire. This made for less cutting. I think your kukri with its chopping ability would have been better than the bowie or the hatchet. Thanks for sharing a valuable survival video.

Some late comments: Love that Kukri although a little outside of my budget right now. But you "get what you pay for". The Sawyer filters cant be beat for 20 bucks. Filters up to 100K gallons with the included back washing syringe. IMO, best filter for the money and a great bartering item. Really nice knife sheath kit set up. Probably the most compact essentials kit I have seen so far. Keep the great vids coming!
It's great many people underestimate just how dark it gets in woods and fast ive done overnights haveing what you said helps. Sleeping under a tree with no gear is not fun.

Great video. Khukuris/kukri are a great knife/tool. I've used them a lot. From traditional khukuri to tactical kukri and they were some of the first knives i put into survival bags and backpacking packs and used then for landscaping and tiugh yard work. I kind of like this Tops version because if the exaggerated areas that contact during swing into wood or whatever you're chopping but then that inner belly stays sharp and untouched for light delicate or fine work. They make work go by quick since they're big but you can wield them very well very easily. I've got a sole really nice ones and matching pairs so i don't need any more but it's still good fun to watch and good to stay up to date on good ones like this.
Nice chopping tool. Having all your kit in one place is convenient but if you lose one you lose all. Can I suggest that pouch would be ideal for a sharpening stone and a 1st aid kit for the inevitable injury we all risk when using blades! A tough glove would be a very good idea for the other hand. Making a shelter and fire would be extremely difficult one handed after an accident.

I have a kukri from Nepal. I find it has a good deal of heft, weighted towards the far end. I would bet it is a superior chopper. It must be a quarter inch thick at the spine. I can't say for sure since I don't have a Tops to compare it to. Something about them being handmade and carried in combat by the Gurkhas adds something to it for me. Wish I had a sheath like that for it!

Might want to get those leaves cleared away from the fire. That's a good way to get burned up in your sleep. Push them up into your shelter and they'll help insulate your body heat.
Certain forest debris will be full of chiggers and other such bugs, so it's a good idea to smoke your makeshift bedding first to kill them off. It doesn't take long, and if you have cedar around to smoke some pieces of too *(just to then leave around your tent and such), insects hate it and the smoke will pull the scent out very well if it's fresh.
Hi, nicely made video. Couple of things; if it starts to rain get a load of leaves inside for a bed quick before they get wet. Wet leaves aren’t warm. Also, a wooden fire reflector will help block wind but doesn’t really reflect heat. It needs a shiny surface like foil or Mylar. Also, maybe better to keep the whistle and torch on a lanyard, separate from the knife sheath, so you can still signal even if everything else is lost. BUT all of this is kind of beside the point: buying a good knife and the other gear and putting them together is a deliberate, conscious decision to be prepared in case of emergency out in the woods. So why make life harder in that scenario by carrying such minimal gear? It’s not hard to carry a small pack with lightweight camping gear and it’s not hard to keep it close. I reckon we all hear so often that a knife is the primary survival tool that we accept it without thinking, and then our strategy revolves around using the knife: chopping wood, making fire, building shelter, when actually, in real bad weather, it’s not reliable or quick or easy. People get lost because they’re careless or don’t know how to navigate and when to mark their trail. The skills to avoid a survival situation are even more useful than survival skills. Sorry to go on, I do like your videos, but so many channels jump straight into “I’m lost so I have to make camp with just this little kit” without teaching newbies how to avoid that scenario.

Play are a couple differences worth noting. First, the length of the blade does allow for more different types of cutting. Slashing is gonna be more effective with a machete then with an axe. Also it generally handles more like a large knife which for many people is easier. The blade profile is also different. Now with all that said, an axe does offer a ton of functionality especially for major wood processing an axe is a win.
Say Heah Tim, I have a knife that came with a Survival Kit, It's my Fox Bushcraft Parang, It measures 7" + from tip to handle, But I consider it a 6" citting edge. Yeah it's a bulky looking knife, But it's great for some of bush craft fine task's. I go out in any weather and wet seem's to be a norm for me, But All good because it allows me to practice wet fire's and all's well. But the Fox Bushcraft Parang is actually lite, But I can still chop as well as do fine task's and ofcource the survival kit that I attched to the sheath. ,, .
i have 2 kukri knives just like the one you compared to the tops kukri. I only paid 45 dollars for both, I love the kukri its my go to field knife. but I have to say I do like the tops kukri knife sheath more than my original kukri sheath.

Do you think you could use the Kukuri as a prying tool? Maybe even a digging tool if you didn't have a camp shovel and you needed to build a fire hole or something like that?
I designed it to be strong enough to dig in rotted tree stumps for grubs and other stuff. Nobody should ever be using their knife to dig a hole - sharpen a digging stick and use that.

Excellent Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried - Lammywalness Your Dream Guide (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to get a a FREE Edt multitool survival tool minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cooworker at very last got excellent success with it.
I use Arkansas stones. Just gotta rotate it along the blade. To be real not excited about the tops Kukri. It’s just a little short to warrant a Kukri blade. I prefer my kabar Kukri. Also waiting to get a real Tora.

Your fire, starting redundancy means nothing if you cannot harvest and obtain the wood to burn that you could get from a camp ask even a hatchet, but not that tiny little machete that thing is meant to be super sharp and go through green limbs
your khukri looks like it's been made by windlass steelcrafts, which explains the edge. You know what I have done to my khukri to give it an excellent chopping as well as cutting edge is grind the whole bevel into a single edge. you get it ? instead of having a secondary tiny edge on the bevel, I ground the whole bevel in an edge. and that's how khukris are traditionally sharpened. that is how you have an edge to chop trees or heads. and its much easier to maintain and fix.

Kukuri are te best.. Adding this one to what i want. Although consideirng i'm going to live in japan. I don't think I can own one of these there.... kinda hard to find the laws there.. but i'm going to have to get some camping and emergency stuff
I think the 1095 is better than the 1075. The TOPS came sharper, it's smaller but just as effective as a chopper. The sheath - while not Kydex - allows you to carry other gear in it. And I honestly think the TOPS looks cooler. Now - all that said - I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Condor, but I like the TOPS more for my preferences/purposes.

I think the big round belly is actually a design flaw of this knife, Kukris usually don't have as much of a belly like that and a less steep angle as well. He probably gets stuck at the top of the belly before most of the knife even goes through the wood which means just a fraction of the blade is actually chopping. Unfortunately TOPS doesn't really fix the flaws in their knife designs as with the TOPS BOB still having overly aggressive jimping and that shitty firesteel cutout at the pommel. They're cool looking and I love the size of it too, but for the absurd price they ask for I would want absolute perfection in quality as well as design.
He was also using the wrong method. The o ring method is the proper way to chop with a kukri. It used the weight of the blade to chop and doesn't tire you out.
The khukuri (not "kukuri") is from Nepal not India. In case you don't know, that little kink at the bottom is for stopping the blood from dripping on to your hands and making the handle slippery, after you cut off an enemy's head.
Just so you know, this was spelled differently on purpose - it's made in the USA, not in Nepal. When I discussed naming this blade, I originally put down KHUKURI, but the owner of TOPS Knives did not want to spell it that way. So I suggested "Kukri", and he said "No, that is how Lynn Thompson spells it". So I thought about it and said "How about "Kukuri"? Just drop the silent "h" out of the spelling, it sounds the same. So there is the story for you behind the spelling.
I like the video and I like the knife , but $178.00 on Amazon today 12/29/17 , is alot for a kukri, I'll keep my Ontario for $50.00 ,it's also 1/4 in thick , its just a little bit longer at 17 inches . I don't understand Tops , they have some great designs , but the steel is still 1095 , why do they charge so much for it ? Yes, they have a good heat treat , I think that Kbar's is a little better, but I'm not going to pay an extra $75 - $100 for a good heat treat . Its like paying $100 for a folder with 8cr13mov, when you can get a very similar design with the same steel for $20 somewhere else.
Brian Follett tops charges what they charge because they are an American company that sources all of their materials locally as well as most of their processes are don't by hand (i.e. heat treat, stock cutting, handle shaping, fitting, sharpening, and packaging) so you can say that the cost is contributed to amazing quality, really good quality control, and the attention to detail to make sure everything is perfect for the customer. Tops knives are over built to stand the test of time. You don't necessarily ever hear about a tops knife breaking. So for looking at all the processes and work that goes into each and every knife, the price is actually reasonable. It isn't for everyone, but it is work what you pay
I imagine its very similar to the essee knives are the price they are compared to the Ontario knives rat series. You're looking at better heat treatment, better warranties, and yes buying most tools that are made in America cost more than from other countries. No the price isn't for everyone, but they are worth the money. Let's be honest its very easy to see the difference between a bad, a mediocre, a good and a great heat treatment.
If you chopping a stand tree.....then the chops are going to be up and down....and if the wood is laying flat, then you would be chopping left and the right..... that is my point. While it may be great in one direction, it can not be good in the other..., it is more a preference that reality.... sorry.... Still a good knife, if it fits your style and use.... I have used a knife of that style....interesting.
The Tops kukuri loses a lot of its versatility in my opinion by having such an aggressive recurve... there is no point in the knife where there's a straight section of blade. If you notice on the Indian kukuri there is a nice straight section of blade near the grip, massively increasing its utility, and to a lesser extent its sharpenability. Just my 2c but I think my points are valid.
Great video and I would definitely recommend the knife as well. I bought one when it first came out and I love it. Check out the designer of the knifes channel and his method for sharpening it. LVI Bushcraft and survival is the channel. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Say Heah Tim, Yeah, a good video why are top knives that expensive. good job. But I still wish they would use the 1095 CroVan carbon steel instead. But I have a O.K.C. Gen2 SP-53 that I would love to see a face off with tour Tops Kukuri. The SP-53 is one of my Fav. chopper for the $$$. I also teamed my SP-53 with my O.K.C. Ranger T.F.I. Yeah, that would be a good idea for you to show case matching combos for your videos. Like that Good Kukuri with the B.O.B. Knife as a combo. Yeah, show combos that you think would work together. My SP-53 and the Ranger T.F.I. is a set I use a little in colder weather where I know I'll be processing alot of wood to stay warm. In minder weather, I like to go lighter. Like this weekend, I brought my Rodent 5 with my Woidsman Pal Premium. I also got a sgeath that I had by Bark River pancake Sheath that will allow me to carry my vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter as my neck knife. I also brought by new WoW Folding Saw. I also let my friend use my Steel Will 240 Druid and my Druid 230 which is a 9" blade and pretty lite for its length, She likes using it as a clearing tool. I wish it was a little deeper so it would chop better. But she likes the set. Besides she's a great cook, heh heh heh. so the 240 will be used alot for food prep. But I bought that set for my wet conditiin use. It's made out of the 9Cr18MoV which is a little better than the 440b. But my Rident 5 is becoming a Fav. belt knife and I also have the Ratmandu, but the 1;2" longer blade is winning over my Ratmandu. It also has a Lightning Bolt handle shape which is very comfortable. I always liked flatter handles because I think flat blades have better control. Anyhow this is my dissertation on our weekend, heh heh heh.,,.p
Kershaw Camp 10 will blow this away with chopping, has a good handle to absorb impact, and has not so severe a curve so you can use it for other tasks as well and it costs 38$ at Walmart.

Vermont and New Hampshire bushcraft is pretty hard on knives. A few of us are going on a 72 hour bushcraft survival trip in a few weeks in vermont.

What about the Condor K-Tac kukri? More traditional style of kukri with modern modifications. More chopping power.

I like both the classic kukri and the tops kukri but if I had to pick one it would be the classic.

Do you think you could use the Kukuri as a prying tool? Maybe even a digging tool if you didn't have a camp shovel and you needed to build a fire hole or something like that?
You could. I'd be careful using it to pry, but it is a very strong tool.
I designed it to be strong enough to dig in rotted tree stumps for grubs and other stuff. Nobody should ever be using their knife to dig a hole - sharpen a digging stick and use that.

If you do get one of my knives, also get a TOPS "Backup" as a small skinner/utility knife to go with it.

I use a sharpening rod - that's the simplest way I find.
Thanks, I just bought a fine grade Lansky sharpening rod! You know, I ended up buying this knife and it came Kydex sheathed instead of nylon, has TOPS changed their spec, no more nylon sheaths?

Excellent Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you ever tried - Lammywalness Your Dream Guide (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to get a a FREE Edt multitool survival tool minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cooworker at very last got excellent success with it.

I use Arkansas stones. Just gotta rotate it along the blade. To be real not excited about the tops Kukri. It’s just a little short to warrant a Kukri blade. I prefer my kabar Kukri. Also waiting to get a real Tora.

A nice tool but harder to sharpen than a standard shaped knife 8/10 for the Kukuri.. A great video..Cheers..

It's a preference thing but I prefer this over an axe.
Your fire, starting redundancy means nothing if you cannot harvest and obtain the wood to burn that you could get from a camp ask even a hatchet, but not that tiny little machete that thing is meant to be super sharp and go through green limbs

your khukri looks like it's been made by windlass steelcrafts, which explains the edge. You know what I have done to my khukri to give it an excellent chopping as well as cutting edge is grind the whole bevel into a single edge. you get it ? instead of having a secondary tiny edge on the bevel, I ground the whole bevel in an edge. and that's how khukris are traditionally sharpened. that is how you have an edge to chop trees or heads. and its much easier to maintain and fix.

I think the 1095 is better than the 1075. The TOPS came sharper, it's smaller but just as effective as a chopper. The sheath - while not Kydex - allows you to carry other gear in it. And I honestly think the TOPS looks cooler. Now - all that said - I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Condor, but I like the TOPS more for my preferences/purposes.

Kinda looks like your somehow missing that giant sweet spot on some of those swings. Maybe not. I just imagined it would chop way easier than it did.
I think the big round belly is actually a design flaw of this knife, Kukris usually don't have as much of a belly like that and a less steep angle as well.
He probably gets stuck at the top of the belly before most of the knife even goes through the wood which means just a fraction of the blade is actually chopping.
Unfortunately TOPS doesn't really fix the flaws in their knife designs as with the TOPS BOB still having overly aggressive jimping and that shitty firesteel cutout at the pommel.
They're cool looking and I love the size of it too, but for the absurd price they ask for I would want absolute perfection in quality as well as design.
He was also using the wrong method. The o ring method is the proper way to chop with a kukri. It used the weight of the blade to chop and doesn't tire you out.

The khukuri (not "kukuri") is from Nepal not India. In case you don't know, that little kink at the bottom is for stopping the blood from dripping on to your hands and making the handle slippery, after you cut off an enemy's head.
Just so you know, this was spelled differently on purpose - it's made in the USA, not in Nepal. When I discussed naming this blade, I originally put down KHUKURI, but the owner of TOPS Knives did not want to spell it that way. So I suggested "Kukri", and he said "No, that is how Lynn Thompson spells it". So I thought about it and said "How about "Kukuri"? Just drop the silent "h" out of the spelling, it sounds the same. So there is the story for you behind the spelling.

I like the video and I like the knife , but $178.00 on Amazon today 12/29/17 , is alot for a kukri, I'll keep my Ontario for $50.00 ,it's also 1/4 in thick , its just a little bit longer at 17 inches . I don't understand Tops , they have some great designs , but the steel is still 1095 , why do they charge so much for it ? Yes, they have a good heat treat , I think that Kbar's is a little better, but I'm not going to pay an extra $75 - $100 for a good heat treat . Its like paying $100 for a folder with 8cr13mov, when you can get a very similar design with the same steel for $20 somewhere else.
Brian Follett tops charges what they charge because they are an American company that sources all of their materials locally as well as most of their processes are don't by hand (i.e. heat treat, stock cutting, handle shaping, fitting, sharpening, and packaging) so you can say that the cost is contributed to amazing quality, really good quality control, and the attention to detail to make sure everything is perfect for the customer. Tops knives are over built to stand the test of time. You don't necessarily ever hear about a tops knife breaking. So for looking at all the processes and work that goes into each and every knife, the price is actually reasonable. It isn't for everyone, but it is work what you pay
I imagine its very similar to the essee knives are the price they are compared to the Ontario knives rat series. You're looking at better heat treatment, better warranties, and yes buying most tools that are made in America cost more than from other countries. No the price isn't for everyone, but they are worth the money. Let's be honest its very easy to see the difference between a bad, a mediocre, a good and a great heat treatment.

Most of us chop in more that in direction....... Interesting knife..... but saying ti chops better because of it's design, not a good point !
Yeah - the ergonomics work that way at most angles.
If you chopping a stand tree.....then the chops are going to be up and down....and if the wood is laying flat, then you would be chopping left and the right..... that is my point. While it may be great in one direction, it can not be good in the other..., it is more a preference that reality.... sorry.... Still a good knife, if it fits your style and use....

The Tops kukuri loses a lot of its versatility in my opinion by having such an aggressive recurve... there is no point in the knife where there's a straight section of blade. If you notice on the Indian kukuri there is a nice straight section of blade near the grip, massively increasing its utility, and to a lesser extent its sharpenability. Just my 2c but I think my points are valid.

not if you have rods. It's super easy with either rods or a 1x30 belt sander.

Haven't used the BK9 much but I really REALLY liked the TOPS Kukuri.
what about SXB vs Kukuri ?
I find this more balanced. Not a huge fan of the SXB after initially holding it, but I'll check it out in the future perhaps.
Great video and I would definitely recommend the knife as well. I bought one when it first came out and I love it. Check out the designer of the knifes channel and his method for sharpening it. LVI Bushcraft and survival is the channel. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Say Heah Tim, Yeah, a good video why are top knives that expensive. good job. But I still wish they would use the 1095 CroVan carbon steel instead. But I have a O.K.C. Gen2 SP-53 that I would love to see a face off with tour Tops Kukuri. The SP-53 is one of my Fav. chopper for the $$$. I also teamed my SP-53 with my O.K.C. Ranger T.F.I. Yeah, that would be a good idea for you to show case matching combos for your videos. Like that Good Kukuri with the B.O.B. Knife as a combo. Yeah, show combos that you think would work together. My SP-53 and the Ranger T.F.I. is a set I use a little in colder weather where I know I'll be processing alot of wood to stay warm. In minder weather, I like to go lighter. Like this weekend, I brought my Rodent 5 with my Woidsman Pal Premium. I also got a sgeath that I had by Bark River pancake Sheath that will allow me to carry my vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter as my neck knife. I also brought by new WoW Folding Saw. I also let my friend use my Steel Will 240 Druid and my Druid 230 which is a 9" blade and pretty lite for its length, She likes using it as a clearing tool. I wish it was a little deeper so it would chop better. But she likes the set. Besides she's a great cook, heh heh heh. so the 240 will be used alot for food prep. But I bought that set for my wet conditiin use. It's made out of the 9Cr18MoV which is a little better than the 440b. But my Rident 5 is becoming a Fav. belt knife and I also have the Ratmandu, but the 1;2" longer blade is winning over my Ratmandu. It also has a Lightning Bolt handle shape which is very comfortable. I always liked flatter handles because I think flat blades have better control. Anyhow this is my dissertation on our weekend, heh heh heh.,,.p
Kershaw Camp 10 will blow this away with chopping, has a good handle to absorb impact, and has not so severe a curve so you can use it for other tasks as well and it costs 38$ at Walmart.
