    The klymit pads design is a feature. The gaps allow cooling and air flow in the warmer seasons. In the cold, it allows your bags insulation to to loft and fill in the gaps imcreasing the effectiveness of the insulation in your bag.

    I can completely back up what you’re saying about insulated static V pads being waaaaay below their rating.
    I do a lot of deep winter backpacking in the northeastern US (Adirondacks, White Mountains) where the average overnight temp on my trips is -10 Fahrenheit or lower and those pads are horrible.
    I could instantly tell the 4.4R value was incorrect the first night I used one. I now have a cheap Thermarest Neoair with an R Value of 3.1 and it’s significantly warmer.

    I unfortunately own two static V insulated pads; however I don’t do real winter camping, so it really doesn’t effect me - expect they falsely advertise the pad. My klymit static v came today. I found it difficult to inflate and deflate, I laid on it and it squeaked like a dog toy, it felt so flimsy and small. I quickly realised that there was no way I’m taking this out on a camping trip to risk a bad night sleep on it. It didn’t even come with a repair kit like most pads come with. I was disappointed the moment I took it out the bag to be honest.

    I have a similar problem with manufacturers describing tents as 4 season or 3 season tbh.
    People end up thinking "I need to spend a grand on a Hilleberg to go camping in winter".
    Should really be more "static load limit (as from snow) = X, dynamic load limit (as from wind)".
    Because , and let's be honest, 4th season in Yorkshire is fairly different from 4th season in Canada for example. 😂

      No, you dont need hilleberg to camp in generic "winter". Like in backyard "winter" or fishing trip "winter", or even nearby forest "winter". But i more often meet people that are zombified with UL trends, than overengineering, like hillebergs, and go on Khibiny tour with copper spur hv ul, and it ends rather ugly, both for them and their equipment.

    Must say (repeatedly on this channel), even with pad with R7.1 (by Exped) I prefer to use additional 5mm foam pad when sleeping on the snow in sleeping bags' limit temperatures. This thin foam pad gives me additional 5-7°C on the backside, and feels so good. Anyway, having a real winter sleeping pad, i.e. in this video the R6.9 T-a-R Neoair Xtherm, is absolutely great, and very recommended to all of you guys. ....Now I am curiously waiting for some product updates from Klymit (with real winter rated R).

Only later I found the package says "R 4.4 (1.9 ASTM F3340-18)" and even then I thought the number in parentheses is some revision number, so it was ok, it says R 4.4 by the ASTM standard revision 1.9 F3340-18. And then I see this. Why don't they just list the actual ASTM R value instead of some arbitrary number? Holy hell, what a nasty marketing scam this is!

    For me, the Klymit was "okay" to 34. So, probably a 2+ season pad. I would definitely not call it anything above an R-value of 2. It is comfortable though & is a good warm-weather pad. The Gear Doctor, for me, very underinflated (I prefer that) left me cold at 51 degrees, but it is very warm when fully inflated. I have that same experience when using Thermarest neoairs also & they are my preferred cold-weather pad, fully inflated of course. Your very good information on pads will help a lot of people to not freeze.

    Great video, lots of good info. I didn’t know they updated their rating. I first had the green klymit pad (I believe somewhere around an R value of 1, so they claim) and shivered through the night in 1-7 degree Celsius nights. I hope if did the F to C conversion correctly:) However, I bought their R 4.4 rated pad just two weeks ago and it was the sweet spot for that temp. It also has a completely different valve system than the green pad of theirs, and this one is brick red. Is this an updated version? Maybe, or I just haven’t tried it in 5 degrees fahrenheit…..🥶

    It’s about safety. The kit has to meet the claims of how to manage the worst conditions you find yourself in. In the wrong situation it can be dangerous. I was literally about to buy one. I’d rather spend the mistake money on a better high end pad. I’m going for the Thermarest. Buy good quality gear once and look after it, is probably the wisest advice I’ve received. Thank you, I always trust your honest reviews.

    As soon as this came out I knew that there was no way the r value on them could be that high. Just from the design I would have been surprised if it was half that never even considered buying a static v just from the design.

    Ho acquistato un Klymit con R-value 4.4 per un viaggio in Islanda e l'ho testato in montagna ad una temperatura notturna di circa 3°C. Ho avuto freddo,sono totalmente deluso.

    Jeremy, where were you over a year ago when I was spending money on Klymit pads? My insulated Static V is crap. Uncomfortable and I will swear it makes me colder. I'll use it above 60F, but that's it. The Double V was great for me and the girlfriend around 25F, but combined body heat was the thing, not the pad! You are doing a great service with this video, please know that. I'll use my Klymits til they die, but I'd buy One Tigris sh*t before I went Klymit again. Just kidding, I'll never buy Onetigris either.

    I just sent your review to Klymit Europe since I’m arguing with them since some days. They’re trying to convince me that their tech is working (the loft of the sleeping bag should sink into the channels) It’s not for me - sleeping cold in a cumulus xlite 400, a 2 degree down bag, at 7C… Going to buy a Nemo Tensor Insulated

      Klymit is a company of stories and fairy tales. They have false advertising issues and have been caught telling lies to customers. Proof is in the video

  • @dominicbell4912
    @dominicbell4912 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They don't have the ASTM R value stated anymore _ just the original R value from before (4.4)
    And then in the FAQ they have the blurb implying that this is the ASTM value now..
    '' In an effort to conform to the new ASTM industry standard while not confusing the current Klymit customer base, Klymit is listing both historical R-values and ASTM R-values on our website and packaging. ASTM R-values will be listed once the pad has been tested ''.
    Bit annoying as they're the only company with a hammock designed pad...

    • @dominicbell4912
      @dominicbell4912 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Edit: Actually that seems to be the case with just the hammock version and a few others..Looks like they're updating to the new ASMT metric..
      Still means it will be too cold for my hammock though in the autumn which is a shame.
      Thanks for the vid, i would've probably been convinced to buy one without it

    Well, my static v luxe sl felt about same as 3r value thermarest pad, and considering they rated normal static v luxe at 2.4, that's about right. i use thin 3mm reflective foam mat as a footprint and puncture protection and started feeling cchill at -10c. But considering 100% of my travels, even shoulder season mountain ones rarely bypass even -10c, im fine with klymit. That's all given my sleeping bags are extreme overkill, as my summer one rated for -5c comfort, and my winter for -20c.
    Disclaimer - no i dont think the situation is normal, and i wont buy klymit again when my static v eventually wears out. But it works for me.

    I have the Static V Kings Camo and only used it less than 10x, now it's useless. The valve leaks, and seam on the sides as well as the inside leaks. I have no plan on using the lifetime warranty since I live in the Philippines and the shipping cost to send it back to them is expensive. I truly regret buying Klymit. I should have bought a closed cell foam pad instead.
