You should use a paint from Humbrol called polished steel metalcote. Then wipe the replica gently with a blanket, it will wipe out in convex places and it will look like a worn parkerization or anodization coating, because it contains metal filings.

I scuffed up the surface with sandpaper and just primed over it.
I have a question, do you have to take off the black paint before puting the primer or just paint it straight forward with the primer ?
