This is one of the greatest songs you ever wrote. People who weren't there will never know how much you nailed the feeling of the 90s recession and subsequent "jobless recovery" with these lyrics. It's key to really understanding the grunge generation.

This song is zen. The art of not caring. I think it shaped my world view more than I care to admit. A few more states left to go but I believe I've covered singing this at most public transportation facilities from Virginia to Portland so far.

I was Beck's (and his wife plus four other people) server at a restaurant I worked at in NYC back in 2013.I wasn't going to intrude on his dinner by telling him I was a longtime fan but at the end of the meal I mentioned I was going to the concert (he was playing with Modest Mouse at a small festival the next day) and wished him a good show when I dropped the check. His wife smiled and asked me a couple questions while Beck just stared at his half eaten dessert. She noticed he was spaced out and nudged him and then told him I would be at the show. He looked me in the eyes for 5 seconds or so and then looked off to the middle distance. It was so weird but also kinda cool. His wife looked at me an gave me an "I'm sorry" look. I got the feeling that happened a lot in that relationship.Anyways, it was cool getting to recommend a wine to Beck and all that.

For those of wondering what the demonic-sounding backwards slow speech at the beginning of this video is (which is not present on the album version of this song), thanks to the audio processing magic of Audacity 2.1.1, all it is, is of a young man saying:
"He also said that he didn't believe in God or miracles, until Lynn came in."

+Theepicr RotMG not entirely true about it having no meaning. Beck said it was his first attempt at a protest song about corporations greed and signing contracts. hence the bits about "shopping malls coming out of the walls" and just got signed

For those who've watched the classic TV show "In Search Of...", you will notice that the volcanic eruptions and the policeman running into the station all came from the episode "Dangerous Volcanoes". Also, the scenes with diamonds came from another episode called "The Diamond Curse". Search them up on TH-cam to find it.

Did you know that inserting beck's mellow gold cd while playing monster rancher 2 gets you the most powerful monster in the entire franchise?
