I respect the comprehensive guide, I remember how overwhelming rimworld was when I first started. I learnt a lot from just watching your 100 days series.
Same here, I'm ashamed to say I didn't know I could unforbid every item with one button (I double click each type usually) and how to set everyones priority at once, oops =D. Though I'm surprised veequeue didn't mention the worst debuff in the [rim]world, eating without a table.
@@AngryAnt0there’s an option in the architect tab that lets you allow and forbid by drag clicking which is useful for when you land in basic scenarios ( I’m using a modified crash landed scenario)
I know there’s people in these comments with hundreds and thousands of hours, but I just got Rimworld and man… I’m addicted. This guide has been super helpful, thank you!
One thing about Phoebe Chillax. Since you get raided less, you subsequently get less "Raid Loot" in the form of weapons and armour. What this can mean, potentially, is you could fall behind the weapons/armour curve if you are not careful. You could suddenly find yourself with a large / advanced raid heading your way, when you don't really have much in the way of armour and weapons to defend yourself. Something to bare in mind when playing on her difficulty.
Found this out when I first played. Cassandra may raid more often. But it also means your base is regularly “stress tested” with gradually increasing threats. Phoebe it is really easy to go up multiple wealth levels between threats and not realize your defenses are insufficient for the new dangers.
I never ran into this, but I really don't fight much until sappers and other special raids become common. I always start in a semi-mountainous area and wall in my base, with a trapped entrance made out of wood (so I can burn it if necessary). By the time really dangerous raids show up I'm already making my own high-grade weapons.
One of the most important tips is to organize your colony around your workshop. Anytime your pawns produce something, they have to physically pick it up and move it to the relvenat workstation, so you want to store all of your raw resources in a warehouse right next to all your workstations with additional shelves right next to them at higher priority to store said resources and their products. Your fridge, diningroom, and sleeping areas, temples, etc. can all but put to one side as your colonists won't be spending much productive time there. So much of the game is just learning to set this stuff up properly and in good time.
One thing you missed with the freezer: DOUBLE WALLS! Double walls insulate better ( Beyond that, no effect ). Which is especially important in extreme environments. Keeping colonist areas warm in arctic climates or keeping freezers cold in extreme deserts, for instance. Saves on how many heaters/coolers you need and thus less power.
You shouldn't always follow this advice. Two air conditioners are enough to cool the entire room; you can also create two doors so that air from the street does not get inside. Personally, I always need two air conditioners and don’t need anything else.
I bought Rimworld about a month ago and got 50 hours already (a lot for me personally). I always loved simulation games of every type but this one is special but i dont know how to find the proper words for it that describe it. From the start i knew this would be a blast and there i was on a 8 hour bender on my first startup of the game just to get all my colonists killed the next day after loadup haha. I just laughed for a good bit while creating another colony.
I was just going to watch this to give you the retention and like but with over 2000 hours in this game I have only now just learned that you can right click the allow key to unforbid all items on the map. This guide is not just for beginners, but for fools like me as well.
Hey VEEQUEUE. Biggest reason why I love your videos is the editing format. Thanks for the guide! Though I almost have 1.5k hours and won't really need it haha
Probably the best basic newbie intro guide Ive seen. I hope you do a part 2 and continue on, even if its abridged. I always get paralyzed by indecision when I play rimworld. There are so many choices I have no idea what to prioritize or strive for (besides the starship)
Thank you for this guide! I've just gotten into the game a few days ago and learned alot of subtle tricks like holding shift to queue items and assigning medkits, very helpful!
This game is so overwhelming at the start and i started playing yesterday and loving it! Lost my entire camp to a heatwave, they all had a heatstroke in unison because I didn’t realise the construction level needed to be 4 in order to build a lot of essential things xD
@@StuddlyMuddly95I just got it and it’s fun yet quite difficult to learn, all the menus seem overwhelming but the thing is some of the menus are only useful for specific use cases, and all the main menu stuff are at the bottom of the screen which I find very helpful rather than hotkeys. It’s as if cities skylines, infection free zone and civ 6 (factorio too?) all got mashed up into one big chunk called rimworld
@@StuddlyMuddly95 I recommend watching amphibious amphibian's first games of this before he became a master of it. It made sense when I watched him play when he was a noob so I started playing it too. And then I go to tutorials like this if I want to know more.
With your dedication to themed playthroughs of Rimworld and knowledge of the game's mechanics almost inside and out, I think it would be awesome to see you try out Amazing Cultivation Simulator and give us your take on it and potentially more cool videos will come as a result
Excellent crash course that optimized some things I was doing poorly (e.g. simple meal cooking, harvesting/planting, etc.) or didn't know about (e.g. organ mining). Thanks!
Cassandra classic is maybe predictable but i figured the situations would at least vary, my first winter on my current playthrough i basically fed my colonists off of animals that had gone mad because they were too busy healing from animal attacks in the summer months to harvest crops and build up a food stockpile
When it comes to stone cutting, I always set up a stone chunk stockpile outside the door to the base (also acts as cover!) and a stockpile for blocks right in front of the bench, and set all the bills to drop on floor, that way pawns spend the minimum time hauling. Also always try to get pawns with a work speed bonus to cut stone, because it uses work speed not crafting skill.
Quick tip: you need double wall around your "refrigerator" zone to get the maximum insulation. Double wall is even good for the part in contact with your other rooms so it wont mess with their temperature
I always create a pet zone "Safe in Doors" and i leave those pets inside! (You can build an outside area so long as its walled in) Also useful for non combatants, injured or crippled colonists or VIPs
It's really interesting how similar I do things to your tutorial yet how different we are at some points. I've got about 1000 hrs of playtime and yet there's still stuff I learned (and also some stuff I'd rather still do my way XD)
Man I’ve only sunken in 30 mins into the game but it only felt like I played for 5 mins! This must be what it feels like to fall down the Rimworld rabbit hole lol

This is the best beginner's guide. Despite your obvious expertise of the game you have not forgot how overwhelming this is for beginners. Very well done, sir.
Not sure how effective it is in the long run. But found if I make a type of "Air lock," usually with 2 or 3 tiles between doors, for freezers. Alot less cold air is lost. The trade off is it takes a bit longer for pawns to bring stuff into the freezer because of this.
One thing I always get tripped up on is how to optimally choose where rooms will be, especially with mods there is an endless number of different room types you can set out to construct. Obviously, there is no one perfect set up. However, I like to have my main room of non refrigerated items next to my workshops- my barracks next to my workshop and inventory stockpile. But of course, your dining room and recreation room can't be too far away because pawns are going to need easy access to those rooms as well. But wait, my growers can't just be running a marathon to get to the fertilized growing zone across the map... hmm? And I need a room to store batteries or generators- and of course space to set up renewable forms of electrical generation. And of course, my refrigerator can't be too far from the dining room, barracks, laboratory, prison, hospital, nursery, school room... like there are just so many rooms it's hard to figure out what is the most space efficient way. And of course it all needs to be connected because if it isn't you will be in a rough spot during a toxic fallout event or nuclear winter. The one thing I usually don't take into account in base placement and planning is hunting and mining. But everything else pretty much needs to be fairly close together. I hate watching pawns waste hours of a day just trying to get from one place to another. It reduces efficiency and production.
