Better then wolves is one of the hardest mods ever made. Adding the 'nightmare' variant too it makes it stupidly hard. This mod slows player progression, enhances mobs, and just makes it for an all around bad time. Its very vanilla friendly in terms of the items it adds or features it changes, but is still TERRIBLE to play.

There’s a dish called prairie oysters in Canada (also known as Rocky Mountain oysters, mountain oysters, calf fries, cowboy oysters, and many more lol) which is… to put it bluntly, deep fried bull balls.
Prairie oysters are most popular in parts of Canada where cattle ranches are Everywhere and castration is a common practice for both veterinary- and husbandry-related reasons. “Creeper Oyster” is a very clear reference to prairie oyster lol
So, the mod creator probably lives in either the Canadian prairies, or a US farming state.

This mod: We're aiming to make things more realistic, instead of punching down trees with your hands, you need to gather bark, make sharp rocks, and slowly work up to basic tools.
Also this mod: If you don't eat two entire animals worth of meat every hour, you'll starve.

I love that the creator only got to a diamond pickaxe and mudflaps not only beat the record and got further, he was worried about making the base look good too haha
Pretty sure that by the time he reached that milestone, others had gotten further. Remember that his actual game time was AT LEAST 500 hours.
But he may very well have been the first person to have beaten both End Dragons due to the fact that by the time he had started farming for Protection Scrolls through his slime farm, only 16 scrolls had ever been found TOTAL. He was geared well above what others would have been thanks to his choice of base and farm locations. Especially, I think, when it came to so many elite arrows.
@@GeneGear yeah definitely, I more so said the creator as a comparison. I was just trying to say that most people playing are only worried about surviving, but mudflaps decided he wanted to make things look good too (until he gave up haha)

You’re joking, an unedited version of this game is probably over 100+ hours of footage, his first attempt took like 200+ hours of footage.
@kindplanet1 I was just expecting it to be a vod style. Probably multiple parts. 4 hours of edited gameplay is a LOT of effort for one single youtube video.

Well, this is pretty sad. I’m only at 2:27:11 in the video so far and I’ve been wondering what happened to the wolves.
However, at the same time, I can justify it in my mind just because this is a really hard game mode and he would probably run out of resources pretty quick if he fed them like he was supposed to.
Doesn’t make me happy tho… in fact quite the opposite.

The "slabs to save energy" thing is so realistic, it really feels like a modpack made for realism and all that, when Im tired of walking on the mountain I make the climb more equal by digging dirt and placing it around, thats much less work than just walking a slight incline
This mod (not modpack) was never made for realism though. It's original designer FlowerChild never did anything to make it more realistic, he made things to make a more rewarding and enjoyable game. He was designing his perfect game for himself and for many in the community it is the perfect game.
There are realistic elements yeah but this does stand out im ngl

@@Wombattuus In almost every game comes a point where you've mastered it so much that it provides no challenge whatsoever anymore. Unless you're a person who can keep themselves endlessly occupied with weird and/or senseless projects, Minecraft is deffinitely one of the easier games to master.
In other words, unless you're totally trash at games or have some severe learning disability, after not too long you will know the game well enough that you get absolutely stacked within a couple hours of gameplay, and nothing feels rewarding anymore. BTW makes the same things way harder to achieve/obtain, thus making even seasoned players feel greatly rewarded for every step of the journey.

@Sergonizer Yeah. It's called "local difficulty" if you want to know more about it it's a unique value per-chunk from 0 to 6.75, it takes 50 hours to reach the maximum value.
@Axodus no I mean I know about local difficulty but I thought it was related to mobs having better armor and weapons, and the group spawning was just a bug.

it's weird how you starve after a single night, but in reality you can go several weeks with zero food. Yet this mod doesn't make you drink, which is 100x more important than eating.
I think the requirements to get an initial bucket to drink water might be a run killer for alm everybody. If you just need to sip on a river nearby it makes an unnecessary concept. Not per say useless just tedious and artificially inflating the difficulty do you agree?
the mods main goal is to just make things difficult. the realism is more an aesthetic or a vessel for the difficulty, not the main point

thirst bar isn't a very good concept given that it's just another hunger bar, and hunger is already enough of a problem in btw. If they were to add it, it should be very different compared to hunger in terms of effects on the player

Uploading this as one video despite the fact that longer videos do worse on the algorithm is so amazing of him. I love that he prioritised his audience and knew we wouldn’t want this as episodes and with cliffhangers
Longer videos no longer do worse on the algorithm. They may even do better then shorter form content. This is why you see youtubers reuploading videos in "movie" form
@ I’m pretty sure there’s a limit. The algorithm still prefers videos 10 min or longer but not over an hour. I don’t know for sure tho so maybe you’re right. In my experience tho, I find im never recommended longer videos, even from people I’m subscribed to, and I often end up going to minecraft TH-camrs channels and find that they’ve uploaded a few long episodes that I’ve never been recommended
@ it’s through a different audience. TH-cam’s algorithm can now detect what videos you prefer on which device at which time of day. Individuals that fall asleep to listening or watching TH-cam videos with auto play on eventually get recommended long form content. Because a sleeping person can’t change the video, they watch long form content with 100% retention. This portion of TH-cam viewers has drastically increased in size. So they end up doing really well on that side of the algorithm

Either way, I still respect him for uploading it all in one video instead of in episodes. He could have easily made this into multiple videos, all over an hour long, but he knows his audience prefers it all in one and no cliffhangers or waiting for the next episode

I stumbled upon your channel thanks to the algorithm, and then spent 2.5 hours watching the first video of this modpack all in one sitting, and then started this one in the same sitting... Even though I have never played this pack, I feel like I have through you just from sitting here for 7-8 hours watching this glued to my screen better than a drama series. Kudos to you man. I hope your pillows are nice and cold and freshly fluffed after the massive grind this was. You deserve it!

Early on you questioned if there were more mobs after a couple in game days - yes there are, and that's actually a vanilla mechanic called local difficulty. The more time you stay in an area, the harder it gets
Actually, local difficulty was added in Minecraft 1.6.1, but BTW runs on version 1.5.2. So if it does exist in this game, it must have been re-added by the mod.

I love how a lot of things about early survival in this mod are more realistic than vanilla Minecraft, but at the same time there's also things like how absurdly fast you start to starve, and how you need to rip apart tree trunks for sticks instead of finding branches. It's just harder in every possible way.
The farther you get the more absurd it seems. Like concrete being sand, gravel, and the souls of the damned. For no reason either lol

My least favorite stuff is some (not all) of the changes that seemingly just equate "difficulty" to "seeing how patient you are"/"creating a time sink"
Like adding extra frustrations and complexities to food and farming feels like it has an actual point to it, because it in turn adds depth and challenge to managing your time and resources, and incentivizes you to progress towards stuff that'll make it easier for you.
But when it gets to a point where your "challenges" pretty much mandate making an afk farm and sitting around waiting forever, in turn testing pretty much nothing past initial setup and requiring the player to repeatedly put all the actual fun and intrigue on hold, to me you're taking things too far.

@the_potatolord6213 2 years ago me and my buddy went through a destiny 2 phase. We were still low level with sucky weapons and gear but tackled the hardest dungeon for whatever reason. After trying it for 6 hours straight and being in a rhythm we finally went to bed and all I could think about is the game and which step was next and where to go next. Dreamed it too. Next morning I had the same pattern stuck in my head for hours. Ik I could google it but what's this phenomenon called?

Fun fact: this mod was made because creator didn't like wolves that Notch added, thinking it was a waste of time and made this mod to remind Notch what Minecraft could be without wolves.

@@Phantomist_it was called “better than wolves” because the creator of the mod wanted to make a point that the updates were insignificant and boring, like the “wolf update” was beta 1.4, it only added wolves and cookies to the game, which seems like a very small update
The mod pack is built for 1.6.4 as it’s been updated since it originally came out, that’s why wolves are in the game
all the insane difficulty stuff wasn't added until flowerchild refused to update to the horse update (1.6) iirc

@ I’m hoping the devs come up with a sort of arsenal to craft guns. Not as overpowered as the ones from the dragon egg. Requiring ammo and using durability while dealing less damage but having far range.
@@DigitYT I'm not an expert by any means and I'm honestly too cowardly and lazy to try this mod, but I would kind of just prefer it to not be in the game at all, even if it were more fleshed out and logical.
Like I'm aware it's a nitpick but I would at LEAST rather they like, work exactly the same but be changed to a magic dragon bow and magic dragon staff so theres actual thematic consistency and it isn't so weird and silly.

Saw a short about how this mod starts off, and I immediately understood, "This has to span the entire game. It is going to be amazing to watch someone suffering trying beat this." And lo and behold, 4 and a half hour video.
Mud Flaps: talks up the end fight for an hour of the video, prepares three sets of the most powerful armor, and grinds for hundreds of hours to take on the dragon.
Also MudFlaps after defeating the dragon in 3 min: “that was so easy!”

This is legit an amazing video. Despite being so long, I was personally SUPER entertained and managed to watch everything in one sitting.
And it was very relaxing not having to hear TDLMC scream, be super obnoxious and play unnecessarily risky every 5 seconds lol.

I just found ur channel like 3 days ago and became OBSESSED, finished your first better than wolves video to see you literally posted a 2nd one. Waited until today to watch it when I'd have the full time. I've never watched a longer TH-cam video, not even close. This was a truly amazing watch, and there were a few moments that actually freaked me out a little, like the end crystals appearing in the overworld, I would've deleted the game and broken my computer lmfao. Congratulations, this was incredible and I wish you could get a real prize. But hey- you'll go down as one of (if not THE) best minecrafter there is, so maybe that's enough :)

I mean, when you think about it, this means you can technically die as much as you want. Dying in better than wolves spawns you thousands of blocks away usually.

Being able to set your spawn point is actually insane, it turns it from essentially hardcore to survival, which is kind of a perfect way to end the playthrough, since now your basically just playing minecraft
He said it sets your spawnpoint, not that it let's you respawn

@@luisleongaming1776 It shows in the first minute and a half him showing off the nightmare mode features, in which 'Respawn nearby' pops onto screen soon after he dies. You can also read what 'Hardcore Survival' entails at 1:47 if that isn't convincing enough.
@TheGrimbler Huh, true. Why did it seem like he creates a new world every time he dies in the beginning (you can see him naming the worlds) and never had that compass that's supposed to show him the way to spawn?

It's interesting to me how this mod combines mechanics that are so "minecraf," like floating trees and other things, with the realistic aspects like the tool requirements for most blocks. Very unique

My main sticking point with better than wolves is that while it certainly makes things more challenging, it doesn’t really seem like the HARDEST mod, just the most grindy and time consuming one. Or ur just so good u make it look easy.
