My thoughts are: I enjoyed the film because I wanted to. I didn't enjoy TLJ because I kept trying to figure out what was going on and for what reasons. This time, I just went in and enjoyed a fast paced space adventure and have zero energy to poke through the obvious holes and leaps in logic. I just enjoyed a Star Wars movie for what it was.

    • @allancarter
      @allancarter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Same here. I feel like I was allowing my adult mind and cynicism to take away what I love about the movies. As a kids I loved star wars because it was a fun space western with some philosophy in it. I too spent time on theory and what not going into the last jedi. This time I went on media black out and enjoyed it like when I Frist saw the original trilogy after renting them from my library as a kids. I walked out of this film with a big grin. It's the final film in the saga is a little fan service really not called for?

When Kylo made the decision to change, Adam Driver was amazing in his portrayal of Kylo no longer being conflicted. I remember seeing his face and it stopped me. I thought "wow, he looks younger and at peace". I'm sure that's partially make up and effects and partially the performance but I believed the transition. The relief he felt. It's seems like they need to watch the movie again. When Leia reached out to Kylo that didn't turn him. It distracted him. I thought this too. After a bit of thinking I felt that his father and their complicated relationship and the healing that happened was important to his redemption. Think about it Ben never met Anakin he worshipped the idea of Vader but only through his legend. If Anakin showed up as a ghost he wouldn't have know Immediately who he was (Wich they could have worked with) Han wasn't a ghost he was just in Ben's thoughts as he struggled. 8:40 They did explain why Kylo was so angry. His parents handed him off to Luke to be trained at a young age. The whole time, Snoke/Palpatine is corrupting his mind, but he has no clue what is going on. All he knows is that Luke was prepared to murder him in his sleep, he felt betrayed, like he couldn't trust anyone. And his parents sent him away for this to happen. Of course the poor guy is going to be ripped to shreds and angry at the world. I think Kylo was one of the only characters that had a clear and deep arc throughout all 3 films. The only character that both directors seemed to be on the same page about.

I think that will always be an issue if and when you bring The Emperor back. No matter how I feel about the movie, The Emperor return would always have an issue with the previous installments, no matter how it is set executed, etc. The people are already complaining about fan service now, those same idiots would have jumped up and walked out if Anakin and Luke appeared at Rey's confrontation. So, J.J. did the right thing (considering how he brought the Emperor back and ended him). As people have problems nowadays with Canon and Legend materials trying into the Films, as now the time ins are referred to as fan sevices.

Leia didn’t redeem Ben when she calls his name. It’s because he felt her dying. This is why he stops what he does and this gives Rey an opening to stab him. It wasn’t until she started healing him that he starts to realize his mistakes. he has lost the ones he loved and was saved by the one he cares about. Wow, Spencer Ackerman. It's truly amazing how we both watched the exact same movie but somehow we came away with completely different takes/feelings on that scene. I'm sorry to tell you, but you have this "The Rise of Skywalker" scene. Completely wrong.
What's really happening in this scene is Kylo Ren/Ben Solo is being redeemed by his mother Princess Leia. Also, Kylo stopped his fight with Rey because of the Force connection that his mother Leia had initiated. Kylo wasn't sensing his mother coming death. What Kylo was sensing was his mother "Princess Leia" trying one last time...A final attempt to bring back her son Ben Solo. Bring him back to the Light-Side of the Force.

Age Mycek yea i agree but hes not redeemed just because she says his name. Its a culmination of what we both said. All i was trying to say is “leia just saying his name redeemed ben”. Thats what the people on the panel are complaining about. Leia resching out to ben, rey saying she would have taken bens hand, and the memory of his father all help him see that hes not truly alone and that people care about him. The fact that leia died made him realize both his parents are now gone and thats part of the reason the han memory is triggered

In a good 5-10 years the ranking of SW films will be as follows with maybe a few minor adjustments:
    1. Empire Strikes Back
    2. New Hope
    3. Return of the Jedi
    4. Revenge of the Sith
    5. Rogue One
    6. Force Awakens
    7. Phantom Menace/Attack of the Clones
    8. The last 2 SW movies (TRoS and Solo) - havent seen them never will
    9. The Last Jedi
Take this as you will. And yes, The Mandalorian in 2 seasons will be better than anything probably below Revenge of the Sith.

Dude in the USC hat is the first person online to acknowledge that Luke's arc actually started at the end of The Last Jedi. The whole part about him tapping back into the force then projecting himself on Crait is exactly inline with him catching the light saber in The Rise of Skywalker. Everyone seems to think it was a jab at Rian, but that arc was completed by Rian. JJ Abrams was an EP on The Last Jedi so he gave his blessings to the stuff that was in that movie, so he was okay with it's directionBottom line: Did stuff happen or not happen that I didn't agree with...sure it did. I didn't write it, I went to the movie to have someone tell me a story and got that. I enjoyed and loved the movie and can honestly say there were some missed opportunities as well. It's okay to like it and disagree with it at the same time. You can do both. You don't have to be one side or the other. The lady in this video represents the people going into this trilogy with hate. Hate that Disney bought Star Wars, fearing they would "Disney" it up", hate that The Force Awakens was too much like the original, hate that The Last Jedi was too much of a diversion and hate that The Rise of Skywalker was too much fan service. Basically you can't win with people like that because that way of thinking contradicts the other thinking. I am not an Avengers fan, or any comic book movie fan for that matter, so I was in the minority that I didn't pick up the similarities in Endgame because I didn't see it. For that, I enjoyed myself.

Kinda makes you wonder why he wasn’t taught force heal though. Like his whole reason for turning to the dark side was to learn the ability to save people from dying because he was tortured by visions of padme dying in child birth. (Little did he know that she was gonna die because of his actions) And sidious used that to tempt him with power. But if he had been taught the force heal ability he would have no motivation to turn since he’d already have that security over padme’s life. Anakin is definitely powerful enough to do it and yoda should know this ability too. Seems like they just pulled this out of their ass to do something new. Just thoughts I have on this ability.

Khalil Hines yes but they’ve always struggled with those points (outside of the original trilogy perhaps, particularly empire, which has things people have picked apart as well). None of these films are perfect and my point is, marvel movies have very similar audiences and they are both big popcorn action movies, made for kids - yet they still get treated differently in terms of expectations. I get that Star Wars is supposed to be different - perhaps more sophisticated, but are they really? They are high fantasy movies, with characters with incredible magical powers, with massive production budgets made for massive wide audiences. In the end, they are not THAT different, yet SW gets a different standard. I see plot holes and plot armor issues and Mary Sue’s all day every day and still people are like, 100% rotten tomatoes!

The reason the Mandalorian feels so different from TROS is simple - Mandalorian is being made by people who LOVE Star Wars, it's being made by people who are dedicated to telling new stories and expanding a universe rather than just rehashing what's already been told. TROS is a fun experience to look at and initially experience, but beyond heart-wrenching nostalgia, it has very little to offer emotionally. Mandalorian makes you feel, spending time to hash out characters and relationships. Hopefully going forward they put people at the helm of Star Wars that genuinely care about creating new content and new stories. Very excited about the future of Mandalorian and especially the Obi-Wan series, considering Chow is at the helm. Maybe Star Wars TV shows are the future of the franchise?

Of course the ST has similarities to the OT but it is much more original than The Mandalorian.

It's a miracle it become the monster it did because the writing, direction, and scripts of the original trilogy were OK, if not sometimes kinda terrible. Everyone shits on Rey being a Mary Sue, but watch A New Hope. Luke is piloting an X-Wing like a pro and using the force in no time flat. Empire is a different story. Empire is an awesome movie in and of itself, but otherwise Star Wars is pretty effing flimsy. People are honestly expecting too much at this point with this franchise. I am a life-long STAR WARS fan. I saw "A NEW HOPE" when I was 3 years old. STAR WARS has always been a part of my life. I don't believe that there is a more passionate fan like a STAR WARS fan. I really don't think that there could be a new entry of the saga without fan division. STAR WARS is like a family member....during a get together that family member brings a new girlfriend (a new film of the saga)..we all hate the new girlfriend at first until we get to know her....then we all realize she's not too bad. These films have the advantage of LEGACY. I endured the prequels...was gut punched by "THE PHANTOM MENACE"..."ATTACK OF THE CLONES" gives me a migraine....Really loved "REVENGE OF THE SITH." Now in 2019...at age 45 I have really come to accept and enjoy the Prequels. I think these new chapters of the saga will one day take advantage of this. The Skywalker saga has been going on for 40 years. I am glad the Skywalker saga has come to a close. It's time to close out this story. I think the one thing that has proven detrimental is that there was no plan for this new trilogy. And I really find it hard to forgive Disney for it.

I don't know why people are so mad about Disney Star Wars. I've liked all the Star Wars movies.
I think this is like people saying Fuller House sucks. The truth is, like everything, YOU'VE changed. Fuller House is exactly like Full House but you're a different person. A lot of the episodes are straight re-makes from Full House episodes. Think about when you re-watched a movie as adult that you watched as a kid. A lot of the time, it wasn't as funny as you remember it, or as good as you remember it, that's because your younger self was in a different mindset.
Kind of like music. No one ever thinks their favorite genre of music is done justice compared to when they were younger. i.e 80s and 90s rap was miles better then the shit we have today. Ask someone about rock that grew up during the "classic rock" era.
OG Star Wars is cheesy, outlandish, and not at all original. The difference is that, you're a different person and the sequel trilogy has something to be compared to. OG Star Wars didn't have anything to compare it to. This is why everyone is loving The Mandalorian, there's nothing to compare it to, but they're doing a lot the exact same things the sequel trilogy is doing. It always surprises me why people don't know this, don't understand it, or just conveniently ignore it.
I enjoyed Rise of Skywalker, my daughters love Rey and having something to share with them is the biggest reward for me.

    • @floex831
      @floex831 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Sui I am not attacking anyone's opinion, it's an observation hence, the examples of music and tv shows. My observation is that the story lines didn’t change for the sequel trilogy. It was all but identical, first time I saw The Force Awakens for instance, it immediately felt like A New Hope in terms of story. If the story is similar or the same, then by default, and some logic, you like the new one. But some hate it in this “updated” version? That’s a logical observation and question, not an attack. If anyone is making absolute assumptions or ad hominem attacks, it’s you.
"Everyone is loving The Mandalorian, there's NOTHING to COMPARE it to, but they're doing a lot [of] the EXACT SAME THINGS the sequel trilogy is doing?" - ANSWER: Yes, The Mandalorian uses A LOT of the same plot points and story lines of OG Star Wars. Bounty Hunter is hired to retrieve a target, he grows sympathy and runs off with target. Meets new people on the way that help him. Not without running into some old questionable characters from his past. Then comes back to seemingly defeat the bad guy. Strong female characters, which I love btw, are included. On top of that, the Jedi are shown in the prequel trilogy to be the defenders of the Galaxy and now on The Mandalorian, they are somehow never heard of, and are mysterious. Yet no one is complaining about this retcon but they complain about the retcons in TROS. Now that's the definition of contradiction.
“OG Star Wars is not at all original, yet it also has nothing to be compared to?” ANSWER: Yes, Science fiction, or science fantasy in the case of Star Wars was not very prevalent or popular at that time, especially in an adventure form. However, the story lines are not original. Lucas based it on the old Buck Rogers, and Flash Gordon serials. The whole Luke Skywalker journey is based on The Hero with a Thousand Faces. The droids are basically Tahei and Matashichi in robot form from The Hidden Fortress. Obi-Wan Kenobi was also based on a character from The Hidden Fortress. I can go on, but my point is that although not original, there also wasn’t any sci-fi that was done in this form, hence, nothing to compare it to at that time.
“You contradict yourself a lot. And you really need to lighten up. These are Sci-Fi Fantasy movies which are not that deep, and someone's like or dislike of them are not indictive of any positive or negative character traits.” ANSWER: I’m not mad. An observation is usually a question supported by examples, as I’ve done and you haven’t. I don’t know where I contradict myself but I will give you the benefit of the doubt and explain. Furthermore, I don’t know where I am going after anyone’s character, maybe you’re taking it that way.
I am not "guilting" anyone into anything as my examples support a legitimatized exploration of the human psyche. In this case, why we see and experience 2 separate things which are arguably the same in every or many ways, so differently. Moreover, what specifics cause an individual to dislike/like one character and/or prefer/like another when their journeys have been expressed in a VERY similar manner. The biggest difference between Luke and Rey are that fact that they are of the opposite gender. Yet their stories are very much the same.
The rest of your comment expressed concerns which are either comments or reiterate other parts of your comment. Hope this answers your inquiries.

But everything important in them was covered in the original trilogy: Anakin Skywalker was already a great pilot when Obi-Wan met him, then he became a Jedi and fought in the Clone Wars before betraying the Jedi and falling to the Dark Side, becoming more machine than man. That's it. That's what was important over those three films.

Anyone can have their opinion, but the prequels are my favorite Star Wars story. It goes a lot deeper than just rehashing plot points from the originals. So much lore and story added not only to the films, but to Star Wars overall from these three films.

    • @MarkHogan994
      @MarkHogan994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@Bad_Wolf_Media Except that with the originals you have no idea whatsoever why Anakin turned to the dark side. You just have to accept it, just like you have to accept Kylo's turn to the dark. The prequels actually tell you how it happened, and flesh it out. Furthermore, the OT is about a rebellion against an Empire, yet we have no understanding whatsoever of the context. The prequels flesh out the rise of the Empire and add a lot of depth to the OT and to the stakes.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+ next year has so much potential to bring Star Wars back to its former greatness. They don't have to make the timeline between Episode 3 to 4. They can actually start it before Episode 1 to before Episode 3. Give him an interesting origin story that can also deal with flashbacks when he was a young child. Let us get to know his family and such.
They can bring the majority of the cast from the prequels except for Jake Lloyd. Liam, Natalie, Samuel, Ian, and Hayden can all return. Yoda, Artoo and Chewie are forever characters. Frank Oz can die and they can always find someone to voice Yoda. Kenny Baker and Peter Mayhew have already died but SW can always bring back Artoo and Chewie no matter what.
They can even bring back Ahmed Best but obviously that's not a good idea and he's actually linked to Jake Lloyd since TPM is the first time Qui Gonn and Obi-Wan meets Jar-Jar. I know Episode 1 & 2 were trash, but their cast might be the only one that can still save this franchise considering the OG characters are all dead and the Reylo trilogy botched their final send-off completely.
As of right now, Disney churned out 5 SW films and majority of them pretty much sucked. Three straight bad ones starting from TLJ to Solo to TROS. This is not a great time to be a SW fan. Desperate times. Obi-Wan might even have a love child we don't know about considering Yoda got his freak on with Yaddle and Palpatine had a family of his own. Everyone seems to be hooking up in SW that nobody knows about it.
You know one of the most BADASS moments I have ever seen from Star Wars lasted like 20 seconds. It was in ROTS when Obi-Wan and Yoda were fighting Clone Troopers outside the Jedi Temple. You see Yoda throw a lightsaber into a torso of a Clone Trooper. I want to see more of that! And the origin story of Obi-Wan will be more interesting than say Han because he did become a Jedi.
Ewan, Liam, Samuel, Hayden, and Natalie haven't really aged after 20 years. And they still have the de-aging CGI stuff in case they do age really badly. I want to see Obi-Wan, Qui Gonn, Yoda, Mace, and padawan Anakin kicking more ass!
Top 5 Favorite Star Wars Characters
    1. Darth Vader
    2. Yoda
    3. Han Solo
    4. Obi-Wan Kenobi
    5. Princess Leia
I was never really a Luke fan but I love Mark Hamill and I was furious what Rian did to Mark's character in TLJ. Ok, so the prequels pretty much ruined Vader's origin story. Ruined some of his mystique only to recover some of it back in Rogue One. Episode 7 killed off Han. Episode 8 killed off Luke. Episode 9 killed off Leia when she should've died in 8.
So who's left among my Top 5? Obi-Wan and Yoda. But Yoda can't carry an entire TV series even though his baby son is doing it right now. Obi-Wan can carry his own TV series and his own stand-alone film. Yoda lived 900-years-old. Yoda, 230-year-old Chewbacca, and Artoo, all three of them are going to be around forever. You can insert them in anything Star Wars. There's no human element here like there was for Leia because Carrie died.
Obi-Wan's origin stories and past adventures is going to save this once great franchise. We're getting a perspective from someone who isn't a Skywalker and during the Jedi heyday. I think The Mandalorian is just an appetizer but the Obi-Wan series is the one that's really going to take off. 🚀
    Give us more of this!!

I really enjoyed all three sequel trilogy films, (and obviously I’m a little biased, but) I think I’m the “younger generation” that these movies are supposed to be impacting. I just wanted to say that I think Dennis’ comments on my generation- and the prequel generation- were a little misguided. I know some people don’t get the same enjoyment out of the original trilogy as they did back in 1977-83 but I just don’t think that’s how the kids who grew up on prequels or sequels view the saga. The kids who grew up on the prequels see the series as a 6 film saga, and I see it as a 9 film saga, and I have love for every movie in the franchise because I grew up on every movie in the franchise. I just wanted to give my take from the perspective of my demographic :)

The conversation about Kylo turning to the light because his mother spoke to him is simplifying that scene to the point of ridiculousness, and none of you mentioned it. You have to look closer at what was going on at the moment Leia sacrifices herself to understand. Rey was throwing his weakness and conflict in his face even more violently than she battled him with her lightsaber. Using his agony over his decision to murder his own father hardened him, and turned his rage into a murderous fury, because he believed he had done something for which he could never be forgiven, only to have his mother call to him at that exact moment. By calling him Ben, and reaching out to him with love and forgiveness rather than disappointment and accusation, he realized he could be forgiven. He just had to forgive himself first. It was a powerful moment, and to hear you reduce it to "he comes back to the light because his mommy spoke to him" is just plain wrong.

Also Dorina: “ this is not the Star Wars I grew up with”

I overall enjoyed the film, but at the same time completely get what everyone is saying here on both sides. And I can't get over it, Dorina is a dream boat, "I don wanna do it." lol

Excellent analysis and viewpoints. I love that each of you had a different viewpoint. I personally like Rise Of Skywalker better than The Last Jedi I do believe JJ purposely went down a very different path than Rian, thank goodness. If JJ was the writer/director for E9 it would have been a much better trilogy and most of the controversial things Rian introduced that divided the fans would not exist. Rian, like other quasi-fans, doesn’t see SW as an established religion, but as a group of fun, slightly related sci-fi movies.

I enjoyed listening to this review, a lot of good back and forth about what worked and didn't work. It's also helpful to know I can instantly skip any future Collider video with Dorina's negativity.

Dislike is one thing, it is fun to hear back and forth opinions, but the constant condescending tone and the non-stop complaining is too much.

She’s not negative about everything though. I wouldn’t base her whole personality on what she thinks about one movie or movie series.

Rian almost captured that magic in The Last Jedi, the force was mythical and cool again, the wisdom from Yoda in both Last Jedi and Empire were amazing.
I really dislike that they didn't lean in to that in this movie, it was all about legacy and family. They had a chancd to make something new but didn't.
I really hope Rian gets his trilogy to write star wars into the future.
