    I must be the only person on the planet who hates performance/gaming grade hardware that is covered with glowing neon lights and pretentious sharp edges.
    So tired of companies who feel like they have to make their products look like futuristic space ships just because they're targeted at gamers...
    I'd rather something that looks sleek, simple, functional and as minimalist as possible. the the performance speak for the product.

    Linus, the synthetic benchmark was extremely laggy and I think it's a poor representation of AMD's hardware. Could you have not found something that would work out more smoothly? Not an AMD fanboy, that is all.

      The bench was running on a 970m. Has nothing to do with the monitor but yeah I'm annoyed it was lagging. It normally doesn't.

    • @tigerd7528

      LinusTechTips Why run it on a 970m since this is a Free sync monitor?

    • @HitMarkersAreFun
      @HitMarkersAreFun 9 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      LinusTechTips Then you should have done the right thing by reshooting those scenes while running the bench on a desktop pc with an AMD grahics card, since this was a presentation of AMD technology.
      This is supposed to be a review of the AMD freesync tech, yet you left stutter on demo running on that very video, that is totally not cool, not cool at all!

      Brolivia Wilde Yup, it definitely leaves a bad impression, even though i know its not the monitor....

      @MarkOwensmaonayze 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Brolivia Wilde I totally agree. It's really misleading, hence the Nvidia fanboys LOLS about the lag and stuttering. I think the freesync tech is a good thing, but at least give AMD a level playing field with which to play on against the green team. I have often heard that Linus was biased towards Nvidia...now I am starting to believe it. I am also dissapointed with LTT for doing this and not mentioning that it was not running on an AMD card as I am sure this would be naturally assumed by everyone.

    • @AidanFryer
      @AidanFryer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Asean12 It might be an error in TH-cam's processing, but I haven't seen it before, as usually increased noise would be an issue in editing or in camera, not in TH-cam's processing. However, really we need Edzel, Taran, or whoever else edited the video to comment, otherwise it is just speculation.

      the good hustler Eh, every editor makes mistakes, and when you are pushing out 1+ videos a day it is bound to happen that occasionally you get a clip wrong and don't have time to re-render, I just haven't seen a instance of high noise like this before for no apparent reason, and it is just something that ***** and Edzel Yago might want to check out to make sure it doesn't occur in another video.

  • @Voidward
    @Voidward 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    4:54 As off the latest Nvidia drivers, the part about Gsync not letting you disable vsync at the max refresh rate is no longer true.
    Not sure why you'd want to do that, it seems like a complete non-feature to me, but sure, you can do that with both vendors now.

    • @RobertPetrucha
      @RobertPetrucha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stan Velijev Higher framerates reduce input lag and increase responsiveness for competitive gaming. I disable gsync on LoL and CS:GO because I play them very seriously while leaving it on for everything else. Gotta say though, at 144hz with gsync it's really close to not mattering, but in the past when I played on 60hz monitors playing CS:S I could feel when the framerate dropped below 200.

    • @Voidward
      @Voidward 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yeeeeah but in those scenarios you'd either want all syncing completely off or you'd want it completely on. There's very little reason why you'd want it on and then disabled past the framerate cap.
      At 144hz you're rendering a frame every 7ms. If you could render at a solid 200 that would be 5, and I guess in ultra competitive scenarios there might be some minuscule benefit to that, but if you're rendering at 200+ then you're always going to be above the 144 cap where you want it disabled, soo... Why not just disable it fully?
      Point is, that specific feature where you disable the vsync above the framerate cap seems almost entirely useless. Seems like something AMD waved around as though it's a legitimate feature when it wasn't, and the Nvidia implemented it just to take AMD's non-feature away from them.

    • @holgerwikingsen713
      @holgerwikingsen713 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stan Velijev I always thought that the whole purpose of g-sync/freesync technology was to turn vsync off to eliminate input lag while at the same time getting rid of tearing (could someone enlight me with this point?). So
      as you say, turning vsync on/off should be a non-feature.

    • @RobertPetrucha
      @RobertPetrucha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heinz Traub vsync gets replaced by gsync when the monitor is in gsync mode, so we say vsync because that is what the option is labelled in the game options

    • @holgerwikingsen713
      @holgerwikingsen713 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      Thank you, I think I understand how it works in-game now. But, what happens then when v-sync is turned off in-game, is g-sync still running in the background? This should allow g-sync to run on games with no support for v-sync.

    I noticed stuttering with FS on vs FS off in your GTA 5 comparison though.... Also at 6:32.... Is that something you noticed and have additional thoughts on? Edit also at 7:38 for example, that looks disgusting... Would rather tear TBH... Also if someone comments that it is only recorded at 30 fps (with frame blending most likely on) I would argue watch Linus himself, he isn't stuttering.

      Lowinator Well He has given parts of it over time on the wan show, and he did the full thing on some other channel. If you want the basics, he started out as the ncix product manager, and then they needed somebody to do videos for them. He decided to/was chosen to do it, so thats how he started ncix tech tips. After awhile, he wanted to make more videos, so he started linustechtips for more casual and quicker to make vidoes. When linustechtips got big, he left ncix, and now is more of a partner than an employee. I think thats about it, though there could be a few small things I missed.

    • @OiHereticX
      @OiHereticX 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Briggs Guy Run Heaven Benchmark and record it with a camera, watch what the recording does. Cameras record at a fixed refresh rate, so while the refresh rate on the pc is changing, the camera can't catch it, so it looks like it's stuttering. Plus, there are a few spots in Heaven that stutter on purpose so you can check for image ghosting and stuff like that.

    Not that i mind, but when showcasing products to your customers i would suggest the following ;
    1- Quickly clean the monitor of dust so it looks its best.
    (You can still point out that dust will be easily visible.)
    2- Make sure to run a benchmark that wont stutter do the monitor can look its best.
    (Simply lower the quality of the render or use better hardware)
    I'm only saying that because if i had a product i wanted showcased, i would want it done so it look good and that the consumer feel impressed by the image quality, not the stuttering that make the monitor look bad. Especially a Free-Sync monitor.
    Love you NCIX. Bought a lot of stuff on your website while building 3 gaming rigs for my friends and i was never disappointed. :)

    I want to know how Benq is going to handle the strobe issues this time?
    They already required people to send the screens back just to fix the AMA bug with freesync.
    They need to fix the strobe issues and at LEAST Get 100hz strobing working, if not the missing 'single strobe' option, then give a way for people to self-update, even if it required Linux /Ubuntu (there was a third party Linux flasher for the older Z series monitors that flashed through i2c communication).

Lets compare the 290, 2year old card about now. 970 brand new card released 8months ago. So what's your point, gpu technology in general has been slow. It's not about competition, truth is even if there was none there are plenty of potential buyers who want the best of the best. Amd vs Nvidia, saying either is better is fruitless. Depends on the circumstances. Amd is going to be the best deal, because of older tech and simpler processes of making the gpus. If you read this far, well your either mad or somehow interested.

      ***** I agree, I feel lately they don't communicate properly. When done watching i don't know what's good and what's bad. They say one thing but then another thing then I don't know. Linus must wake up cause the ROG swft is not that good. It's pretty bad actually.

    • @SamBorgman
      @SamBorgman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      DiceAir Yeah often they are pretty confusing. Being sponsored and getting paid to review are having limitations on what they can say. Or they knowingly say something confusing to be in the middle ground. This is what's known as "selling out". Feel like that is exactly what happened to this channel.

    • @DiceAir
      @DiceAir 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Well after this video seems like neither G-sync and Freesync is as good as it meant to be. Looks like both have downsides and i don't know why but for now my Qnix qx2710 will have to do until they can fix the issues. With all the issues with the ROG swift and this monitor/freesync I will stay away from freesync/G-sync for a little while. Regarding the issues with ROG swift, I thought ASUS was so great but no they not. Their QC testing is a joke from what I've heard lately from friends etc and that's not to mention the return policy.

Most of the time when I'm done watching I was like ok so the verdict is it good or bad? I don't know. Other reviewers will say what is good and what is bad and then you can decide what you want.

    Bought it just 2 weeks ago, awesome performance, still tweaking the ICC settings, monitor settings and nvidia settings, quite a hassle to get rid of the color banding and ghosting. You really have to choose what 1/3 portion of the screen is going to get bad ghosting, I choose the top most portion of the screen, but in games its hardly noticeable. However I couldn't be happier playing at 2k 144hz (from a gtx970).

    Just a tip: When you record a monitor's quality, shouldn't you use a video recording software on the computer rather than a high end video camera? No matter how good the camera is, it'll still throws off the colors. Changing slightly. Keep up the good work though! Enjoy the videos. :)

  • @blacksteel25

    I'd like to point out the Motion Blur problem is now fixed with this monitor.. PCper covered it in a video.. The First version of this had that problem.. and Benq fixed it with a Version 2..Buying one now should be all Version 2 or greater..

    NVIDIA plus side :
    implemented the possibility to disable V-sync in G-sync mode when the frame rate exceeds the refresh rate in the control panel shortly after AMD showed this feature.
    G-sync can do 30 hz-144 hz. Below 30 fps, the panel multiplies the refresh rate to always be above 30 hz. If the frame rate goes as low as 10 fps, the panel will triple the refresh rate, and so on.
    G-sync now works in windowed mode, on the desktop and other applications too.

    AMD plus side :
    cheaper

    probably getting this one in a few weeks.i currently have an nvidia card, but i'm not paying for gsync, and it's also one of the cheapest 144hz 1440p monitors in general. depending on how amd's new cards do i'll get one of those, there's a 0.0001% chance that nvidia stop being assholes about Gsync, otherwise i'm fine without VRR. 570 bucks is an ok price for what you get.

    I was under the impression that the recent Nvdia driver update allowed users to set the behaviour of the panel once the VRR (G-Sync limit) is exceeded to either V-Syncing OR tearing as per the users' preference - essentially bringing Freesync's upper-end versatility to G-Sync users.
    Someone correct me if I'm wrong/mistaken here.

    Just got one of these off eBay for £220.. except I didn't. Turns out there's an identical looking "Zowie" XL2735 without freesync. Bit of a pisstake really, looking online it SHOULD support freesync too so literally is just a firmware thing. Also it has a different logo on the back.
    Won't lose any sleep cos it's still a great price on a really nice monitor, and might be able to hack the firmware anyway, but kinda annoying releasing an updated model then removing features.

    Thanks for the review. I have a question about this monitor (maybe stupid but seems reasonable to ask in my opinion). So I know you did a review on the Acer XB280HK last year so my question is, if I'm using Nvidia graphics cards/card, is the Benq still a worthwhile pickup? My last monitor was from Benq a 2-3 years ago and had G-sync on it (I think) so I know they make really good monitors. Or, should I go with the Acer? Thanks.

    I bought this screen last month. It's good, I don't regret it, but I found these little issues: the viewing angles are not so great, and if I set the contrast on more than the default 50 setting, white text screens (browser, word processor) are overly bright and some thin text or light gray shades may not be visible.
