It's like someone already said, in the original the characters weren't dumb, they were just cowards. Spineless cowards. The director wanted you to notice the outs, to show that moment of choice where the characters couldn't, or wouldn't, act. The original felt like the director wanted you to leave hating the parents. The audience recognizes the moments they could get out, but the audience literally can't act. The actual characters can, but don't.
I haven’t seen it in a while but I remember really loving it until the characters started doing dumb things such as [SPOILERS!] - going back for the stuffed animal. That was more stupid than cowardly, unless I’m forgetting if there was more of reason than just that for going back. There was some other stuff near the end too that made me a bit disappointed. I’ll have to give it another watch.
Haven’t seen the original but I loved in this one when the couple said “why are you doing this?” And James’ character said “because you let us…?” That made this movie for me. The honest response of “you’re dumb tourists that share too much personal information with strangers” 😆💀
Yeah I think if they cut out like 2-3 moments of the movie (like the first time they left) it would have been more consistent. And I didn’t like the unevenness of the wife willing to stand up and the husband absolutely not. Wished it was more balanced between the two.
James McAvoy is so good at being a sadistic and manipulative bully in this movie. He’s just so intimidating and unsettling to watch in every scene he’s in.
Jeremy said they had so many OUTS to leave. But I always think of another line of dialague from 2011 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, when the killer said " people are more afraid of hurting somone"s feelings than trusting their intuitions to say no thank you" or something like that. That always stuck with me.
The first strike I had against this version was the violence in the trailer. In the Danish original you never see the family defend themselves until it’s already too late, and even then it amounts to nothing more than protestations as their child is literally taken out of their hands. That’s why the insidiousness of the antagonists hits so hard when they’re asked “Why are you doing this?” And the man replies “Because you let me.” Even then you don’t detect much malice-it’s old hat, Tuesday night. The original is probably better. Might catch this on streaming.
Hated the Danish version because absolutely nobody behaves that way. The English version at least has the wife representing the audiences thinking even though her husband is a limp noodle. I also thought the Danish version was hamfisting Aryn Rand politics down our throats. And finally, James McAvoy killed it.
@@jakestroll6518 I totally understand your perspective and I mostly agree with your opinion. It is frustrating to think anyone would be so impotent in these situations. But, I disagree that no one acts that way. There are many documented cases and studies of people who either allow victimization of others or themselves out of a social fear of being othered or cast of the group. If you watch the film Compliance you might have the same reaction “nobody behaves that way”. Because in that film you see multiple people victimize and humiliate a young woman at the behest of an unseen individual speaking over the phone. And you would think that could never happen. Until you learn that the entire thing was adapted from an actual case-along with dozens of similar documented incidents-that really transpired. I still need to see this new adaptation. I believe McAvoy kills it-he’s pretty great in everything. But I’m still not convinced this movie is going to convey the true horror of the original: that polite, modern, civil individuals are weak and vulnerable against real predators.
@@christopher4287The fact that there have been people that acted this way does not mean watching that unfold should make for a good movie viewing experience. Even irl it’s frustrating when people are insanely idiotic decision-makers
@@famousthaneus9810 agreed. I don’t know if I would have cared to see it (the original danish version) if I didn’t have the film mostly spoiled first. Afterward, I was really intrigued to see it. It is a film that maintains tension by making the viewer uncomfortable. That’s not normally a good viewing experience but I think it was really effective in this case.
Only notable thing about the Blumhouse version of Speak no Evil for me was I'd see the trailer for it at *every* movie showtime I've gone to this year.
@@ZealousPawnI don't think it's gender exclusive, since the mother is also a coward. I think it's more a commentary how some people let others step on them to extreme points because they're spineless and can't say no.
@@DrHappy-hk4hl I agree that both parents are cowards, but if you saw the movie I think we can both agree the mother showed quite a bit more courage (not just in the third act, but also throughout the movie pushing back verbally when she was uncomfortable). She kept looking towards her husband to have her back but he usually didn’t
Did not seen the remake. But, in the original had sparked some similar discussions about the validity of main characters actions. Therefore, I guess it sticks pretty close to original’s story. In the original the point was that main characters were wet blankets, dealing with charismatic and evil people. They were polite to the point of being annoying. And, it was a movie about what happens when you don’t listen to your instincts. Also, the psycho couple gives the main pair outs ALL THE TIME, just to test them. The point is they don’t take them, and their are just submissive all the time. Because it is a metaphor y’know, of what happens when good people do nothing.
I'll get roasted for this but... Sort of like letting tons of people into your soft Norwegian country and not protesting anything until they start tossing grenades and doing horrible things to your daughters. Then deciding you don't want to offend anyone so you stick your head in the sand and ignore the problem.
Yes, the movie does explain the lack of cell service. When they first arrive at the house and are almost there, they believe they are lost and have no way to find the home. The husband suggests calling someone but the wife explains that there’s no service. They arrive at the house very shortly after, implying that there’s no service at the house either
Yeah, it was confusing, because they established there was no cell service, but they continued to play on their phones and use apps. I guess they were apps that don’t require internet.
The movie is written such that you’re supposed to hate the main character. It’s a critique of excessive kindness and politeness to strangers, which is highly valued in some cultures. It’s kinda saying “here’s what happens if you value politeness too much.”
I became a fan of James McAvoy when I saw him in Split. Fell head over heels with his acting skills. The man is amazing. When I found out he was in this movie, it was an immediate, I must see this.
@@DwanGarcez Ohh yeah, he's suuch a poser for liking this famous actor for then doing bigger acting variety in the massive thing that cinematography already is. grow up buddy and stop the gatekeeping.
I really don't know why Hollywood need to do remakes with the “American version” of everything. The Danish movie is in English, and the Danish and Dutch are used only sometimes. What I saw so far is a frame-by-frame from the original.
I don't see why it's a problem. Needed? No. But no movie is. It's a win-win. If the remake is halfway decent and popular, then the original is likely to get a lot more exposure. Especially from the "just watch the original" crowd. These remakes don't replace the originals. And no one who would have actually watched the original without the remake being made will just watch the remake and call it good. So yeah, it's an "everyone wins" scenario. Keep em coming!
The trailers for the American version clearly show some action with guns that was not in the original. My guess is the final act has been completely redone, and likely much worse. With the original you'll never forget the end, Jeremy barely made any mention of any shocking ending making me think this one isn't that unique.
I remember feeling a rage toward the parents in the Danish version. How it ended, I was so angry, and I wasn't even a mom yet! I feel the Danish version did a good job conveying that they weren't stupid, they were "too nice". It shows the antagonist husband seeing just how far he could go, just how much he could get away with, leading up to the climax. I haven't seen this version yet, but I'll be waiting for streaming.
The anger we had against the danish couple was what made the movie so good to me in the first place. The whole message the director wanted to convey in the first one was how danish and scandinavian politeness can be detrimental. I’m scandinavian and i could see the picture the director painted with the danish couple’s ethics, it made so much sense with how our culture is. I feel like it is taken away in this movie with them changing the nationalities, and the characters dont really click for me. This movie never needed to exist, the scandi is just better in every way.
1:34 folks, I implore you, just stop watching trailers. Director's name, lead actor/actress, studio, synopsis; you don't really need anything more than that.
I stopped watching trailers for most films a long time ago. Only exception is Nolan, Villenueve and Marvel movies. I always know their trailers wont spoil too much. Marvel will typically show things that arent even in the movie to bait the audience which makes watching marvel trailers feel like a huge bonus to the enjoyment.
I’d love to stop watching trailers. If theaters stopped playing then, I’d get to watch my movie 25 minutes earlier and get back home. Or, they could just start playing them earlier. The late start times are only encouraging people to come in late now anyway.
I hope you read this: my wife and I have a movie watching routine now. We don't watch the trailer we go to the movie, we discuss the movie and on the drive home we watch your review. So far between this and trap you have literally repeated sentences that we said. Your reviews have been so spot on. We have kids and we will 100% put their safety before any politeness, toy or even the life of someone else. The decision making was so frustrating during this movie but James McAvoy acted so well that we enjoyed 90% of the movie. We kept over analyzing every decision they made but it is a characteristic of scary movies I guess. Keep up the great job
I felt the exact same way watching the film. I thought I might have been the only one until I saw this review. The husband was weak and beta, like when he goes after the guy with the hammer, and his wife has to save him. Then I saw a picture of the director, and he looks like the musician Moby, so a weak effeminate man creates a weak effeminate husband to be the hero of the family. It really is poor writing to create tension by having characters do stupid things. Good writing will have smart characters be in difficult or impossible situations despite their best efforts. Doing that goes beyond fear and creates terror. That's what the early gothic writers figured out.
@@FewFew77is it bad writing, or is it a commentary on the state of the family when a father is not a man? Perhaps I was more charitable in my interpretation
It'd be interesting if the movie more played off what Stellan Skarsgard was getting at in 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.' Paraphrased as, "People are more scared of being impolite than being hurt." If it struck that chord in people who've had to muscle their way through an uncomfortable situation because they couldn't find an out, this movie wouldn't been super effective. Hearing that the characters in this don't get out not due to this sort of thing, but due to bad writing, is really disappointing.
That makes a lot of sense and is exactly how our society is which I’ve never agreed with. I refuse to continue being uncomfortable because I may come off as disrespectful. I’m gonna check out the other version.
I don't think Jeremy saw the original ;) They aren't DUMB, they are extremely cowardly. That's the whole message in the original - the couple preys on cowards, and they're supposed to infuriate you. It's a very unique flick!
They are EXTREMELY dumb, actually, and cowards. The film succeeded at making them both, resulting in a very dull experience where you don’t care what happens to them. Their actions defied basic human instinct and logic.
@@DeMarcusFountain-sv6fi you don't even need to see the og to understand they're cowards though? the fact that a MOVIE critic such as Jeremy had no idea the difference, just makes me believe he has no clue about movies and understanding basic concepts of movies...
The Danish version definitely plays more like a fable or realistic grim fairytale warning of the dangers of avoiding confrontation for the sake of politeness and really solidifies it with its super bleak ending that I doubt the remake had the balls to pull off. That tale of caution feel to it does help cushion the blow for some of the decisions characters make, but it’s definitely the way the movie is portrayed in the Danish film that lets it earn the ability to get away with that.
I wonder if the point is to NOT like the characters. If u seen the first one.. everything transpired because they monke it.. they saw bad things but - spoke no evil… heard no evil, saw no evil.. they turned a blind eye what was happening to others and themselves.. I feel this movie is meant to be cynical satire on the “nice guy is actually just a coward”
I mean, yeah, the antagonists literally say it verbatim, think Jeremy may have missed it, but yeah, they, and the other couples before them, were people that let their own problems in life come before there families welfare - and from the antagonistsls' perspective, they're getting revenge for their terrible childhoods by taking children from families they deem bad
I went in to the original of Speak No Evil completely blind so I’m a little dubious about this having the same impact when we already know how it turns out. I’ll still definitely go see it because the original is incredible and the cast for the remake is really impressive!
The original is kind of like that too, full of moments that are like “okay, seriously? You’re really just gonna let that slide and stay?” Culminating in one of the most infuriating endings ever. It’s like a critique of Northern European politeness or timidness rather . I think it just doesn’t land for Americans understandably
In the original, the family actually does catch on quickly but they decide not to act so as to not make assumptions. The original movie is 100% about criticizing Northern European politeness at its core, being a lot more blatant about it to the point where the protagonists are not meant to be liked. They're meant to be SO spinelessly accommodating that they outright let the villain do whatever he wants to them despite them being aware that he's evil and wants to kill them. The problem with this version, however, is that this subtext isn't there so the entire premise of the story falls apart instantly. Rather than making the family overly too polite for their own good, they're instead just made into idiots.
You know, Mr Jahns, I just thought you should know that it’s come to a point where I enjoy your videos so much, that I watch them even if I have no plans to see the movies you’re reviewing. They’re just that good. I might even hit the like button.
I saw the Danish version and the whole 3rd act I was literally screaming at the screen saying "ARE YOU EFFING SERIOUS, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SAY OR DO ANYTHING AT ALL!!!!" The "naive couple" was seriously pissing me off. Great movie though.
The amount of times I've seen this trailer over the summer at the theatre's is mind boggling. So happy it's finally out and will no longer have to see the trailer again😂
I watched the Danish version when it came out and it definitely has the same issue of “dumbest characters ever in a horror movie”. It was so frustrating watching them the entire movie especially with the ending. Also the trailers ABSOLUTELY spoiled this movie. The one most disturbing and plot twist moments is shown off right in the trailers!
I very much enjoyed this movie and noticed the things in the review that were pointed out as flaws. When the main antagonist takes the family’s daughter for a ride on the motorcycle, he’s testing to see if the parents have a spine. They fail the test, and he knows they’re prime targets for his scheme
Honestly don't think it was that calculating. The guy was using the daughter as a way to get close to the family and get to know them then bring them over to his home for the slaughter and steal everything from them. They've been doing this scam for awhile and are serial killers for money.
I think you’re confusing obvious good writing with obvious flaws. Movie like this has huge holes but obviously the intro isn’t usually one because it’s reviewed dozens of times before release.
As soon as I heard they were making an American remake, I immediately rolled my eyes. They put the entire plot in the trailers. If you’ve seen the trailers, you’ve seen the entire movie with the exception of how it ends. I love unhinged James McAvoy, but I’m not gonna waste my time in the theater on this one. I’ll stream it, but probably skip to the end to see if they used a similar ending or if they “Americanized” it with a more positive one.
From Jeremy's review he would have the same issues with the first one, the parents in the 2022 version didnt even fight back n just let it happen, giving the great quote "why are you doing this to us, because you let us"
Yeah, unfortunately it seems like he missed that that was the entire point of the original movie. Him feeling irritated with the character's poor decisions was the entire premise and point of the original. You're SUPPOSED to feel enraged at their cowardice.
@@travistotleI totally agree and haven’t seen the new film but I assumed from the trailers that this version doesn’t help much to get that point across earlier in the film. What I remember of the original version is that it made sense that they were cowardice in certain situations out of being overly polite and this version doesn’t hold the same sensibilities that the original did as far as making it frustrating but understandable
He missed the WHOLE point of the movie. Character decisions, it's literally a premise between the couple that the husband is literally infatuated with the masculinity of the big bad guy, he can't see no wrong being done. And he had problem with people laughing when the director and actors have been clearly saying that they've kept it intentionally uncomfortable yet funny. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LAUGH WHERE THEY WANT YOU TO.
James mcavoy can do no wrong. Ive seen so many movies of his that I haven’t particularly liked but I always enjoy his performances and think to myself ‘well he carried that again’
2:57 that was my biggest complaint about the original, which came out in 2022 btw, just two years ago! And it’s mostly in English too. Hollywood is going next level with remakes lol. Anyways, I haven’t watched this remake yet but you’d think they’d try to at least make it a little more plausible but I guess they wanted to be faithful lmao

I saw another video that talked about this movie - The whole point of the movie was that the family didn't want to come off as rude, they were so desperate to be polite that the bad guy did horrible things.
Reminds me of an old ep of The Powerpuff Girls where this old gang of crooks comes out of retirement to rob banks again, but Blossom refuses to fight them cause they have to "respect their elders". Girl, when said elders are robbing banks and threatenong people that rule doesn't apply anymore! Same with the rules of politeness. It's good to be polite but when people are attacking you and threating your kids thosr rules do NOT apply anymore!
Having many outs and not using them is intentional to show you how the dad is a coward even when he’s left with the car keys inside. He doesn’t take any initiative, he is always too scared to take an action! All these situations are provoking on purpose!
Well, the audience of the original movie was gasping... Another remake of a movie that didn't need one and was utterly misunderstood. The OG works because of the specific cultural differences and it was flawless and clever. Go watch "Gæsterne" and enjoy!
Think about the scene with Stellan Skarsgard in The girl with the dragon tattoo when he asks why people never go with they’re instinct. He told Mikael that he knew something was wrong but didn’t follow his instinct and the only thing Martin had to was invite him for a drink, “Did I force you? Did I drag you? No! All I had to do was offer you a drink”
Saw the original, when I saw the trailer for this one I was dissapointed that all the mystery is destroyed in the trailer, the original film is an example of the dangers of being too naive and having no malice, the couple was just to forgiving and could not put limits when they had too, both of them weak in their own way, the lesson and the kind of naturalistic aproach to human nature as to why we think we are so civilised when we are in reality animals and how those instincts are of value to us when we need them.
Despite the trailers showing the entire movie, I'm still looking forward to this. McAvoy is a hell of an actor, and--no doubt--will be acting circles around EVERYONE. He plays unhinged sociopaths with such zeal (mile marker 2:12).
Yeah…from what I’m hearing from this review, this movie probably shouldn’t have been remade. From my understanding, the original Danish movie was a satire/critique on Danish culture/social norms of being overly nice and accommodating to strangers, with the protagonist family getting into an increasingly worse predicament because they don’t want to be rude by saying no. Us Americans though don’t really have that issue (at least not to that degree), with us more willing to put our foot down once certain lines have been crossed. So when it’s a pure remake without any narrative changes the protagonist family comes off as being dumb or otherwise unrealistic in how they’re reacting to us. But then of course had they taken more liberties with the plot then that would have its own criticisms, so honestly it probably shouldn’t have been done in the first place.
You cracked me up with your two-finger thumbnails. Yes, my brain went to bad places, and now I feel like a terrible human being. But I still laughed. 😆
I've seen the Danish one. Yeah, the main couple was pretty stupid in that version too lol The moral of the story is don't be a doormat. Don't let people cross personal boundaries. Protect your family. "Because you let me."
The movie does in fact state that they don't have phone service out there. When driving into the estate they get lost and Ben says can't we just call them, Louise explains they have no signal... as for Ben himself, his redemption arc was supposed to the moment he broke down and apologised to Louise and says he should have listened to her. Then later he chooses to jump off the roof to get the ladder so the she and the kids can get down safely, then he takes the shotgun when they think Paddy is coming around the corner and he tells her to go and he'll hold Paddy off and catch up. It wasn't well executed, but the film did indeed give Ben moments when he was to be redeemed and shown to care about his family, not to mention he jumped out of the car to save Ant in the lake and told Louise to take the wheel and go. It wasn't perfect and I was underwhelmed, but not for these reasons
"you are smarter than the characters in this movie. That is a fact" 😭 lets hope, but I sure as hell have often not opened my mouth in the past, too often
The original is supposed to be a satire and social commentary so the ending is the way it is because of that. But even with that I found it ridiculous because okay there are people who feel pressure to stay polite and not make a fuss but when your family is in danger, I'm sorry but you absolutely would do SOMETHING. Being polite and bound by society's pressure doesn't make you a bloody coward. I don't like conflict of any kind but my God if anyone even attempted to hurt my kids I would absolutely square up to them and get my kids the hell out of there. Probably not gonna watch the remake even with McAvoy. I just can't stand stupid characters in any movie.
We are currently living in a time, where people are "traumatized" by being called mean words online and you can even get arrested for such things in certain countries. I think you are severely underestimating the cowardice of the modern human ^^
well the film didn’t try to be realistic that wasn’t the point. the film tried to convey a message of where politeness can lead us to and that we should set boundaries and our well-being before being polite. it was a metaphor, a piece of art, not an actual representation of reality.
This movie is definitely worth a watch. It's different from the OG for sure but James McAvoy does an amazing job of delivering a terrifying performance. To answer the question about the cell phone service, the British family shows how they disable it.
SPOILER***** dude is it just me or did this movie do everything possible to emasculate the dad? He does absolutely nothing at all, he gets kicked around, it’s not about bad choices this guy physically can’t do anything.
@@sebastianortiz9343 that’s a fair point, I guess I’m just looking at it through the lens of the last few years of Hollywood doing everything possible to make male characters helpless.

Kind of agree with your take perfectly: the mixture of absurd tension and absurd charisma was just beautiful to watch and the actors all brought their A game (Mcavoy is a goddam legend), but Jesus, the decision making was literally on the level of that "Let's in the barn with all the chainsaws" Geico commercial. Dont think you were supposed to empathize with the lead male though, I think him being pathetic and unlikeable was the whole point, and his journey in the film is overcoming that and becoming a better father and husband
You should watch the original one, even if you know the plot its still pure nightmare fuel. Also the trailers were trash, as always. They even spoiled one of the final twists of the movie... They think they will sell more tickets with these long ass trailers giving away everything? I don't get it. I would prefer a short 30 sec trailers just giving a hint of what it's about. Feels like I said the same 10 years ago.... Stupid af. In the original movie the point of it is to show how "political correctness" and never daring to step anyone on the toe, has gone too far in the west, to the point we basically are ready to get murdered only to keep up the facade.
Saw the original, my partner and I were screaming at the screen in frustration at the couple. It was just so infuriating watching them get deeper into the mess in stupid ways. Saw this coming out and thought “oh good! Hopefully they make it a bit more interesting and give reason to their stupidity!” Sounds like it doesn’t….how frustrating. EDIT: watched it and it’s WAY less frustrating. It made more sense in their decision making and added guns! Like how did no one have any form of weapons in the original other than rocks and scissors.
I never had a more visceral reaction to a film than when I first watched the original, it's even more gutwrenching because I've witnessed "men" allow this to happen and not defend or fight because they don't want to upset the status quo or are fearful of confrontation...
As everyone has echoed here..watch the original. You sadly can not go in not knowing the twist at this point but it’s so, so good. I went in, not knowing anything about it and goddamn was it brutal. The dumbness of the main couple is explained using social “norms,” and it makes things much easier to understand. Please let us know if you watch it

Agreed. My wife and I watched it on the weekend and ended up shouting at the TV due to the parents being so clueless. It was just too much and there's no way it would ever go that far.
I am dying.... I saw both trailers of this movie and when I got the screener invitation I literally chose not to watch it because I felt like the trailers told me everything I needed to know, and then Jeremy's review confirmed it. Sigh... glad I passed. Thanks for the review.
@JeremyJahns the point of the beggining of the film was that this couple seeks out potential marks and then proceeds to push and test theboundries right away (the vespa scene), to gauge how passive the marks were. The point being the couple were chosen exactly because they would go so far to avoid confrontation to let their daughter ride a moped with a stranger, without a helmet, thus making them perfect marks for this entire scheme.
I’m always concerned when I see a movie that’s a remake because it wasn’t in English originally. Let the Right One In is an example of the original being so good, and the remake not so much. There’s something missed. A cultural and location difference, but it makes the story work.
Let the Right One In is one of my favourite Scandinavian movies!! The remake was not a patch on the original. I don't get Hollywood's compulsion to try and remake great movies, they rarely touch the greatness of the originals.
While driving there the Mom mentions that they have no cell phone coverage, and haven’t had coverage in a while. This is before they ever get there, and then I don’t think it’s mentioned again.

that's the whole point, they aren't idiots, they are cowards. that's how the OG European movie was
Fully cowards
Jeremy said they had so many OUTS to leave. But I always think of another line of dialague from 2011 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, when the killer said " people are more afraid of hurting somone"s feelings than trusting their intuitions to say no thank you" or something like that. That always stuck with me.
@@arthur17718That’s such a great line. And it’s true, as it’s one of the things con artists rely on when they pull certain scams.
No, they are idiots
I see this remake went the way of the original. I’ll pass it, the coward parents made me so angry the first time.
Everybody imagines themselves to be John McClane, but people who act like action heroes irl are outliers
Lol so real

So true. I feel like I have already seen this movie from the trailers that I have seen a million times.
I can only listen to Cotton Eye Joe so many times.
This one and the one where the Dad is a serial killer that took his daughter to a concert.
i found myself thinking: that man doesn't deserve that woman.
They’re not stupid. They’re cowards. Especially the father.
I thought this may have even been a social commentary about what happens with the father is not a real man.
That's because the social engineering is to show man are coward and pathetic, while women are brave and INDEPENDENT. :)
@@ZealousPawn Yep, the movie is very much on the feminist side.
I think this explanation. Especially your last sentence.
Great summary
This!
"Why are you doing this?", and the psycho replies, "Because you let me."
I'll get roasted for this but... Sort of like letting tons of people into your soft Norwegian country and not protesting anything until they start tossing grenades and doing horrible things to your daughters. Then deciding you don't want to offend anyone so you stick your head in the sand and ignore the problem.
Biggest red flag was their "son" only had one t shirt the whole movie
Yes, the movie does explain the lack of cell service. When they first arrive at the house and are almost there, they believe they are lost and have no way to find the home. The husband suggests calling someone but the wife explains that there’s no service. They arrive at the house very shortly after, implying that there’s no service at the house either

Was going to comment this myself. I think the movie does a good job of subtly inserting things like this without beating you over the head with it
glasses guy rescuing his baby in the "hills have eyes" remake is everything the main character here should have at least attempted to be.
I adore that insanely dark and depressing movie! Thanks for the reminder :) Oh, and agree!
"Glasses Guy" is Pyro from the X-Men films lol most recently DP&W
He was a great lead in that film. A great protagonist
The movie is written such that you’re supposed to hate the main character. It’s a critique of excessive kindness and politeness to strangers, which is highly valued in some cultures. It’s kinda saying “here’s what happens if you value politeness too much.”
Banger of a movie
I became a fan of James McAvoy when I saw him in Split. Fell head over heels with his acting skills. The man is amazing. When I found out he was in this movie, it was an immediate, I must see this.

I really don't know why Hollywood need to do remakes with the “American version” of everything. The Danish movie is in English, and the Danish and Dutch are used only sometimes. What I saw so far is a frame-by-frame from the original.
Danish and Dutch
Exactly! The original is a few years old and it's in English, I don't just need to see James McAvoy do it. I have no interest in seeing this version.
With the original you'll never forget the end, Jeremy barely made any mention of any shocking ending making me think this one isn't that unique.
if you can't watch James his one of the greatest actors to pull this type off
I remember feeling a rage toward the parents in the Danish version.
Similar themes. I haven’t seen the original but I liked this one
Seriously. Don't watch trailers to movies you don't want spoiled.
@@KellyKels23 Exactly. If there’s a movie I’m already determined to watch, if a trailer comes up, I look away.
Hard to do if you watch movies on the regular. This trailer was impossible to escape
Exactly.
The original was exactly that
THIS WAS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE FUCKING ORIGINAL!!!!!
That makes a lot of sense and is exactly how our society is which I’ve never agreed with. I refuse to continue being uncomfortable because I may come off as disrespectful. I’m gonna check out the other version.
Guess I'd be safe then, I'm never afraid to be impolite, especially when people are being foolish or hateful.
I don't think Jeremy saw the original ;) They aren't DUMB, they are extremely cowardly. That's the whole message in the original - the couple preys on cowards, and they're supposed to infuriate you. It's a very unique flick!
I’ve only “seen” the Danish version through think pieces and reviews but the one line everyone points out is “Because you let us.”
Jeremy literally says in this review he didn't see the Danish version
The ORIGINAL
the question is whether or not that same point gets across in THIS version

Danish ending was unrealistic. Don't care if they lose, but they didn't even put up a fight
I love your honesty! Only person I watch for movie reviews

Yeah, it sounds like this is a case in which (re)casting Americans as the leads might have sunk a story that was a precise cultural critique.
I like how JM goes from mild mannered Nerd to a hulking Maniac that looks like he gains 20 lbs of muscle when he switches to stalker mode.
such a neat detail to notice too. IDK if he/the director planned it or it was just a coincidence.

The amount of times I've seen this trailer over the summer at the theatre's is mind boggling.
So happy it's finally out and will no longer have to see the trailer again😂
…and because of that, I’ll never watch the movie, either. Having to see it 1-4 times a week for the last several months has been unnerving.
It's 💩
Movie was so ass
@@Sebasmia0228 ok
Maybe it just isn't as clear in the remake version
He missed the WHOLE point of the movie. Character decisions, it's literally a premise between the couple that the husband is literally infatuated with the masculinity of the big bad guy, he can't see no wrong being done. And he had problem with people laughing when the director and actors have been clearly saying that they've kept it intentionally uncomfortable yet funny. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LAUGH WHERE THEY WANT YOU TO.

I gave this video a like 👍 simply for that smooth sponsor transition.
The original was mostly in English I do not understand why this needed a remake
It didn't. When Michael Haneke remade Funny Games shot for shot in English, that made sense. This is just ridiculous.
I see McAvoy, I press play or buy the ticket. He's one of this generation's best actors.
Mr Jahns, your hair is perfect.
They were being dumb because they were too polite. The wife had more balls than the husband( he was acting like a wussy)
That cutscene was hilarious. That very sweet of you to say 🤣🤣🤣
They clearly didn’t get what the original was about. And it only makes sense in Scandinavia. Because of how we act towards one another

the kid should get a Oscar nom for that close up at the end of the movie.
I’ll take something like this, over a Disney movie.
I’ll take diarrhea over anything Rodent House.
I’m glad this remake sounds different from the original, the original was great but it was a miserable experience
Ending sucked
We are currently living in a time, where people are "traumatized" by being called mean words online and you can even get arrested for such things in certain countries.

OP: neither can I. If I can't buy into the actions of the characters I'm supposed to care about, it's not gonna be a good movie for me.
@@arsenelupin9697 You are making a serious generalization
well the film didn’t try to be realistic that wasn’t the point.

@@lauren8922 worse I’m guessing? I think I’ll pass. I honestly only watched this because of McAvoy, the movie itself wasn’t the best. I live in a small town and there was only 4 other people in the theater and we were all laughing and pointing out the frustrations to each other.
Hopefully they make it a bit more interesting and give reason to their stupidity!”
Sounds like it doesn’t….how frustrating.
EDIT: watched it and it’s WAY less frustrating. It made more sense in their decision making and added guns! Like how did no one have any form of weapons in the original other than rocks and scissors.
I suggest giving the original a try. I liked it. Much more of a slow burn.
Did you watch the original one?
And this new one wasnt? 40 minutes out of the 2 hours was anything worth mentioning.
Thanks for the honest reviews. Another movie I know I would never make it through without hurling a chair through the screen.
I never had a more visceral reaction to a film than when I first watched the original, it's even more gutwrenching because I've witnessed "men" allow this to happen and not defend or fight because they don't want to upset the status quo or are fearful of confrontation...
men... in real life?
As everyone has echoed here..watch the original. You sadly can not go in not knowing the twist at this point but it’s so, so good. I went in, not knowing anything about it and goddamn was it brutal.
The dumbness of the main couple is explained using social “norms,” and it makes things much easier to understand.
Please let us know if you watch it
I'd have pissed myself laughing if this was a tie-in to that awful Kane horror movie from like 2006.
That did eventually get a sequel....
Glad I'm not the only one who thought of that film (even if my familiarity only stems from an old movie magazine review I read in middle school lol).
1000% right about trailers. It's exactly what i'm doing - making an effort to miss trailers as they went into cracked mode lately. The movie is absolutely amazing
I understand your point but the origonal was very much lile this.. the whole point was that the couple allowed it to happen, thats whu they were chosen..
The final line in the origonal was 'because you let us'
you absolutely should’ve done the tongue in the thumbnail 😂
and as far as the movie goes- i definitely enjoyed it. I was only there to see Mcavoy in the first place and he delivered as always so it was a win for me. but if he was not in the movie … yeah i don’t know if i would’ve enjoyed it. the cast did fantastic though
I already have seen the original. But this remake gave away the entire plot in the trailers anyway
Did it? Because reviews have already said there are surprises that aren't in the trailer

3:13 here you go almost getting me to laugh out loud in my cubicle Mr. Jahns 😂😂😂
The Original one pissed me off. The parents are even worse.
Ya 100% push over that is reason why everything went to 💩 vs be a man/parent.
I was hoping this one would go a different direction. Apparently it didn’t, so I’ll pass.
Agreed. My wife and I watched it on the weekend and ended up shouting at the TV due to the parents being so clueless. It was just too much and there's no way it would ever go that far.
I would’ve went to war in the original
@@Gooch_cruiser spoiler alert:
It does.
I am dying.... I saw both trailers of this movie and when I got the screener invitation I literally chose not to watch it because I felt like the trailers told me everything I needed to know, and then Jeremy's review confirmed it. Sigh... glad I passed. Thanks for the review.
I looked into it. The original and the point of the movie is about how being cowardly and polite leads to their horrible fate. That was the point!!
I get it. I'm a total doormat. More afraid of the high likelihood of creating an awkward situation that the very low likelihood of being murdered.
Growing up in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, my friends and I used to make sure we were there to watch the trailers.
Lmaooooo Jeremy is fkn hilarious man I'm genuinely convinced with his timing that he could do stand up 😂😂😂
3/5 no alc req
While driving there the Mom mentions that they have no cell phone coverage, and haven’t had coverage in a while. This is before they ever get there, and then I don’t think it’s mentioned again.
